Line Through Desktop Background

Recently a horizontal line has developed through my desktop background. If I switch backgrounds, it goes away for a while, but then reforms. It begins on the left-hand side of the screen, and then progresses horizontally across with time. It always occurs at about the middle of my screen. It DOES NOT cross through any window I have open. It is only in the desktop pattern. Is this a software or a video card problem?
Thank you in advance for your help!

I don't have the right cable to hook up an external monitor, but that would be a great idea.
The only tool I have to test with is Tech Tool Deluxe which said the Video Ram was OK, as well as everything else it checked.
I noticed that I now have a line up at the top of the screen. Time to contact Apple Support.
Thanks!

  • Thin white lines on desktop background

After having my computer on for a while, one or two thin horizontal white lines will appear on the screen. They are around a few inches long, and never appear in the same place twice. They only affect my desktop background, not any windows or screen saver at all.
Reloading the desktop background or restarting the computer makes the lines go away, but I'm wondering what is causing them, and if it's a sign of some underlying problem.

    Insert your MacOSX DVD
    reboot while pressing ALT key
when icons appear on the screen select Apple Hardware Test and run extended test.
Perhaps a video memory problem. If yes motherboard is dead !

  • Mac Mini (10.5.8) won't stop cycling through "Nature" desktop backgrounds.

My Mac mini is changing its desktop background by itself about every 30 seconds, strictly from the "Nature" folder of backgrounds. Tried switching to a different folder with a different desktop, but it will revert back to the nature folder after holding it for about a minute. I don't have it set to change the image. Using an LG monitor.

This is just the settings for Desktop & Screen Saver, let me know if you need screenshots of any other settings.

  • Line through a circle symbol, can't find a way around it! Help please!

On start up of my MDD G4 I am getting a no entry symbol, a circle with a line through it.
To give the full background of events, 2 evenings ago the Mac froze up for no reason, at the point I think where the screensaver would’ve activated due to inactivity. There was only mail and firefox running at the time, no videos or anything – this error, or at least the freezing of the Mac (no movement even from the mouse) repeated itself later on that night and yesterday evening as well, although the next evening the Mac wasn’t on long enough for the screensaver to start up. On those occasions the Mac restarted fine. Last night however I got the circle symbol but was able to hold down option key and select my previous drive to start up with, I ran Diskwarrior and it found a few faults with my main larger drive and repaired them and the Mac restarted with the larger drive as it’s startup drive absolutely fine. I put the Mac to sleep last thing at night, however this morning it failed to wake – note that the power lights on the Mac and Apple Monitor were glowing and fading fine as they should.
When I restarted the Mac via the power button on the Mac it started up fine, I had the Mac symbol with the spinning icon (not sure how you describe it!) as normal, however the fans then slowed down as did the hard drive noise and that’s when the circle with the line through symbol appeared.
So far I have tried disconnecting all peripherals from the Mac, resetting the PRAM, resetting the CUDA switch on the motherboard, starting up holding X and starting up from my Diskwarrior CD – unfortunately even the startup using the Diskwarrior CD fails to bring up a desktop of any sort and instead brings up the circle with a line through it.
Can anyone shed anymore light on potential problems or more importantly solutions as I’m tearing my hair out on this one!!
As further info, there are 2 other additional hard drives in my G4, one of which was my main startup drive for around the last year (a 500Gb drive connected via PCI card), which has worked flawlessly until now. I have tried starting up with this drive disconnected but to no avail.
One more piece of information which may help is that if I hold down the option key at startup the Mac does see both OSX system on my original and additional hard drives (and Diskwarrior CD if inserted) – however no matter which one I select it goes no further than the line through a circle symbol.
Many virtual drinks for anyone who can solve this!!!!!!!

One of the Level 4's, the Hatter (I hope he stops by personally) gave me the following insight:
    The hatter wrote:
A really badly corrupt directory can prevent booting from any drive or media, because they all look to see what other boot volumes are out there.
With G4/5's the best way to clear corrupt nvram was to boot into Open Firmware and reset nvram and a good idea to do when swapping drives, memory, PCI cards.
Try booting after removing or unplugging the hard drive. May need to pull it and put in FW case to recover anything.
So what could have happened when you crashed is that there was disk damage, probably to the disk directory. If that happened say to a single HD, then according to the Hatter, you won't be able to boot from any drive since there's a kind of checking to see what other drives are boot volumes out. That check could be failing in your case because of the directory corruption.
You have two HDs in your MDD, so either one or both could have suffered directory corruption.
If I understood one of your posts, you disconnected the SATA drive, and still saw problems. If so, perhaps your old HD suffered corruption.
So you might try disconnecting the old drive -- be sure to disconnect the data cable because your Mac will can cause fits if the data cable is connected to an unpowered HD. Then try to boot from the Install CD or even Diskwarrior. I'm pretty sure you can boot from the optical drive even if there aren't any HDs.
If you can boot from CD with no HDs, then we've got it narrowed down to directory corruption. Thereafter, you might see if you attach only the SATA if you can boot to diagnose the just that drive. If you can, that's great because it would mean your backup HD suffered the damage and not your main drive.
As indicated by the Hatter, if you've got damage to the SATA, it may mean your best chance is to connect it externally. That way you can boot, thereafter connect and diagnose.

  • How to change desktop background in AppleScript in 10.7?

I'm just now upgrading from 10.6 to 10.7, and I'm having trouble with a script that I wrote that worked fine under 10.6.  In part, it executes the following command:
osascript -e "tell application \"Finder\" to set destop picture to POSIX file \"<path>\""
to change the desktop background image to one of two different files based on other conditions.
In 10.7, this command completes with no error code, but it only changes the background of one of my four desktops.  Is there a way to programmatically change the background image of all of my desktops simultaneously?  Failing that, is there a way to a) find out how many desktops I have and b) loop through them, setting each of their backgrounds in turn?
I did search the web and found the following suggestion:
osascript -e "tell application \"System Events\" to set picture of every desktop to \"<path>\""
Unfortunately, that also changes only the current desktop's picture.
The larger script is in Perl, so I'd prefer a technology that works well with that language, but if I have to change to a different scripting language, that's not the end of the world.
    Thanks much for any suggestions!
    Richard

Actually, “repeat with k from 18 to (18 + N - 1)” was not a good idea, since it works only with N < 5, as I discovered after posting the script.
So here's an improved version of the previous script that should work with any number of desktops:
set theFile to POSIX file "/Library/Desktop Pictures/Isles.jpg" -- just an example
-- Find out how many desktops you have:
    tell application "System Preferences"
reveal anchor "shortcutsTab" of pane id "com.apple.preference.keyboard"
tell application "System Events" to tell window "Keyboard" of process "System Preferences"
set N to count (UI elements of rows of outline 1 of scroll area 2 of splitter group 1 of tab group 1 whose name begins with "Switch to Desktop")
        end tell
        quit
    end tell
-- Loop through the desktops, setting each of their backgrounds in turn:
tell application "System Events" to key code 18 using {control down} -- Desktop 1
tell application "Finder" to set desktop picture to theFile
    repeat (N - 1) times
        delay 1
tell application "System Events" to key code 124 using {control down} -- ⌘→
        delay 1
tell application "Finder" to set desktop picture to theFile
    end repeat

  • How to block changes of desktop background image

I manage a 30-computer Mac lab in a public high school and I would like to prevent users from changing the desktop background image.
As far as I know, there are two ways to change the desktop background image: through System Preferences and by right-clicking an image and selecting Set Desktop Picture.
Blocking System Preferences is easily done through Parental Controls.
But how do I prevent the right-click, Set Desktop Picture method of changing the desktop image?
You can imagine the kinds of images that end up as desktop backgrounds in a high school computer lab.

You might try going to System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts. In the left pane select Services, then uncheck the item "Set Desktop Picture" under Pictures in the right pane. Once that's done, block that prefs pane.

  • 8800, battery symbol with red line through it. Won't boot. Please help!!!

I recently bought a 8800 and when I inserted a battery, all I got was a battery symbol with a red line through it on a dim screen.  I changed batteries, tried to charge it via USB and from a wall outlet to no avail.  I tried cleaning the contacts and tried uploading t a new  OS, but it wont recognize the phone being connected when it actually is.    I am at the end of my rope with this phone and can't figure out what else to do.  Is it just gone? Please help me
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Leave the device to charge 2-3 hours, and then, still connected to the USB cable, remove the the battery from the device a few seconds and reinsert it. If it boots--leave it to charge to 100% (check Options > Status for the percentage).
If it doesn't boot--try using a wall outlet charger if you are not. If you are connected via USB to the PC, make certain that you have Desktop Manager (or the USB device drivers) installed, which you can download below.

Hello cor-el, thanks for your reply. I changed my settings for downloads to desktop and it has appeared on there. When I double click I am asked which program I want to open file. I click firefox and another box "opening install" says I have chosen to open the file which is an application and do I want to save it. This is the only real option so I press save file. I get a box saying this is an executable file which may contain viruses - do you want to run. I press ok and the final box showing C drive file name and desktop appears stating application not found.
This happens the same whenever I try to install.
To my untrained eye the application is not being recognised as an application and I cannot work out how to get it to do that.
My plugin is still showing as out of date.
Is there anything you could suggest. Thanks for your time.

  • Can't move files - white circle with white line through it?

    OsX 10:4:10
Suddenly I cannot move files from one drive to another, or from drive to desktop. Recently updated everything.
White circle with white line through it appears.
Network awaiting news footage. I'm stuck. What might this be?
Any help would be most appreciated,
    Ben

    Hi megagram & dreed2,
Thanks for staying with me on this.
USB drive and errant file both have 'read and write' clicked. There is no 'ownership' choice in the info pop-up.
Nor is there 'Ignore ownership on this volume' choice for the USB drive.
I'm using an administrator account. I created a 'root' account, but it didn't seem to have any effect - didn't fix the problem. (I don't like messing around with 'root' account stuff.)
I'm not running as a 'client in a Mac OSX Server environment'. Just as an 'admin' with the one tower and a rotating bunch of external drives (projects).
I did a work-around for now ... shipped the 'unmoveable' file out to an ftp site (it would allow me to do this), and I haven't heard if the downloaded file is causing any problems on the other end (yet).
If I come across a solution I'll post. It may have something weird to do with that funky drive (now returned to its owner), and me creating this particular file that same day as the funky drive was giving me problems. (Though the file was not ON the drive.)
And the (almost new) computer did go down for a day last week ... would not reboot ... took it to the shop, nothing wrong with it, brought it home, it's been working fine ever since. Go figure.
Thank you kindly for all your suggestions...

  • Is there an ARD command or Unix command that I can send to reset the desktop background image to default?

I was forced to create a local user with an automatic login on all of the machines in the building. I listed off many various issues that could come arise by doing this but was tuned out. Now people are changing all of the desktop backgrounds to some pretty inappropriate images. I forewarned the person ordering this that this may be one of the many issues that would arise when doing away with our server based logins, and now I am charged with fixing every desktop every time someone changes it to something inappropriate.
Is that an Apple Remote Desktop command or a Unix command that I can send through ARD v3.5.3 to the machines to reset the desktop background image to the default Aqua Blue jpeg image located in the /MacintoshHD/Library/Desktop\ Pictures/Aqua\ Blue.jpg.
The machines that I am dealing with have OS X 10.4.11, OS X 10.5.8, OS X 10.6.8, and OS X 10.7.4 installed on them, but the OS X 10.4.11 machines are the ones that are creating the biggest issue so I would like to deal with those first.

Ya, I'd love to have the computers connected to the Xserver, unfortunately against my heeding, I was ordered to take them off of the Xserver, so they only have a local account that automatically logs in on startup, and even though I have Parental Controls set, I can not stop them from going to Safari, selecting an inappropriate image and setting it as the background, so now I’ve been ordered to fix all of the backgrounds that people are messing with.
My Xserver is running OS X 10.4.11 Server Edition. Yes, I would love a new server, but that’s not happening due to budget cuts.
So what I am hoping for is a command that I can put into Apple Remote Desktop v3.5.3 and push out to all of the computers via its Unix commands and reset all the desktops to their default image.

  • Desktop background doesn't show up

I have a new Mini with 2GHz Core 2 Due, 2G RAM, and 320G HD. I use it as a headless (no keyboard, mouse, or monitor) music server running iTunes. I control it through VNC client (I tried both JollysFastVNC and Chicken of the VNC). Screen resolution is set at 1024x768. The problem is that the Desktop background picture never showed in the VNC client window, no matter what picture I chose. More importantly, Cover Flow in iTunes doesn't show either; the top half of the Cover Flow window is always blank but the bottom half works fine. List and Grid view work without problem, however.
I really don't know what is the right forum to post this so I just start here. Does anyone have any idea on the cause and how to fix it?
Thanks in advance for all the helps.

Hmm, dunno what to tell you then. I've got an older Mini running headless and have controlled it with Chicken of the VNC and with Leopard's screen sharing. Both work fine (though I've never tried iTunes' cover flow with it... it's not a media server, it's being run as a calendar and FileMaker server). So I suspect you may have some odd, subtle system problem.

  • When viewing some websites my desktop background image shows as the page background...why...and how do I fix this?

It seems that the current version of Firefox does not understand how to process style sheets. Instead of the stylesheet background color or image, I am now seeing my PC's desktop background image. This does not happen with IE or Chrome. When checking the error console, I get "Warning: Unknown property 'zoom'. Declaration dropped. Source File: http://trustserve.net/themes/ModernBlue/templates_cached/EN/global.css Line: 4"
I am not trying to zoom.
Any ideas on how to fix this. I can't use Firefox with these problems and I really liked it prior to these problems.

I thought I had it disabled. I enabled aero and then disabled to be sure, and still have the problem, but that was a very good idea. Thanks.
The problem started shortly after I installed two new programs, a graphics program, and an anti-virus. I just removed both programs and restarted the computer and that seems to have solved the problem. Your idea about Aero gave me the idea that one, or both of these programs changed some of my system settings. I am now going to install them, one at a time, and see if the transparency problem returns. I'll post my findings.
