Line Tool: dashed lines

Can I make a dashed line using the line tool? if not, does Photoshop allow one to make/get a dashed line? How, please.
Thanks.

>you can set your brush spacing in the brushes palette and stroke a line (or path) created with the line tool. that's how you do dotted/dashed lines in photoshop.
And you can change the Angle Jitter to "direction" so the dashes follow the direction of the path. Works well with curved lines.
STILL... best is to use Illustrator.

  • Showing grid lines as dashed lines

    Dear All,
i am using a waveform chart to plot my data .. i want to insert grid inside my chart .
There are 3 different options for inserting grids in d chart .
is dere any way i can change the style of lines of grids ?? i want to see them as dashed lines rather than a continous line ...
    Thanks
    Ritesh

    Hi,
the solution to it was a bit complicated .. i had to search for examples to get my data on the wavefrom graph...
thing is like dis. i have to store the data of different channels on different clusters and join the clustes using Build Array ...
Now dat i am able to show the data on graph(atleast) its not showing it continously .. the graph is plotting all d data at the starting point, i.e 0 and not moving forward ..
I am posting the Block Diagram as well as the Output that i am getting ..
Regarding Block Diargram - I am reading a text file containing the waveform data.. it has N number of rows.. each row has 4 columns containing data of 4 different channels .
i read the file "line by line" and store the data in 4 diff arrays(b,c,d,e). then i cluster these 4 arrays separately and build array using dese 4 clusters .. and d output of the array is plotted on the graph den..
Pl. have a look at it and see if dere's any solution to it ..
    Thanks

  • Line Tool- Other Arrows, Dashed Lines

    CS3 PC:
Using the line tool in my tools pallet yields an arrow. Are there other arrow typesbesides the default? I would like a double ended arrow for indicating measurements on a technical drawing.
Also, using the Pencil tool, I'd like to be able to draw in dashed or dotted lines.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
BTW, u8sing the word "line" in the search function yielded zero responses. Not sure how this could be. Must be doing something wrong there too.

Suggest you try Adobe Illustrator, alone, or together with Ps.
In Ai there are similar line ends (arrows etc.) AND easy dashed lines AND perfect dashed line ends and corners if desired.
All better for a "technical" drawing.
Often even better, with dimensioning, is Visio.
    They all "play" well together.

  • Dashed line tool not working

When I try to apply a dashed line onto my line in CS4, it creates a dashed line...but not entirely. Where there are gaps, there appears a really really thin black line instead of just space. I'm setting my weight at .25, my miter limit at 4, and my dashed line at 12 pt.

Take the Fill off the line and it should go away.

  • Can Flash create dashed line with blunt not rounded dashes ?

    Hi,
    using Flash8
I can select line tool and dashed line in properties and draw a dashed line and get a line of sausages. How do I get a line of dashes without rounded ends to each dash ?
Line option has end caps option with None (gives straight or blunt tip to line, round gives rounded tip .
Draw a line with None and its got blunt ends, select it and choose dashed line option and it gets round ends to the dashes, the end cap option is greyed out !
Are dashed lines with blunt dashes now possible again with CS4, a forum poster also found that CS3 no longer gave blunt dashes ?
    Why do I ask:-
I am trying to bring a map into Flash8 from Illustrator (Illus version 10 as it allows blunt tip lines to remain blunt it was said on the forum)... which has blunt ends to roads and has blunt type dashed lines. The roads remain blunt..GOOD !..but the dashed lines become what looks like a solid line. BAD !
I do a right click - break apart,  then double click one of those now solid lines that should be dashed, and I am able to select a portion of the line, it is no longer a continual line as drawn in Illustrator. Properties shows it as solid line. Flash8 obviously having a problem with supporting Illustrator 10 dashed line then !
Select dashed in properties box and I get a portion of the line as sausage dashes, but working my way along the line doing each bit sees a far from correct dashed line result as sausages dont start stop evenly as each line is a separate entity and ignores the previous line.
Looks like I shall have to try and draw the line as one long line again in flash but unless I can give it blunt dashes when done, there is no point even trying that method, hence my question.
Would the latest Illustrator and Flash versions (CS4) allow blunt type dashed lines to appear in Flash ?
This is crucial for bringing maps into Flash.

I noticed one problem with my solution.
If you look, very carefully, at the end of the stream, it's flat. Not rounded like it should be. After a bit of trial and error, I tried a different brush:
Note that, in addition to the rounded rectangle (done with the new corner controls in the latest version of Illustrator CC that just came out) and the three circles, there is also a rectangle, with no stroke and no fill, to provide a space at the end of the three dots. Here is the result:

  • Dashed lines in windows

I am occasionally getting odd display artifacts in the application windows. The artifacts typically show up as pink dashed lines. I can scroll the lines out of the displayed pane but they are still there when I scroll back.
Any ideas? Are they an indication of impending failure? My G5 iMac is a Rev. 2 (Ambient Light Sensor) that falls into the last set of serial numbers listed under the extended warranty for the logic board/power supply issues.
    Thanks

I ran the TechTool Deluxe application that came with my Apple Care. The RAM test failed. Everything else passed including the video RAM. The Tool then provided a troubleshooting check list I will perform tonight. I will have to boot off of another disc and run the tests again. If I dig out the restore disc for this process, I can also check out the hardware diagnostics.
At least I have my Home directory backed up. It only took a couple of tries. The iMac locked up overnight because the OS crashed. The fans were on full blast and the power light was on steadily. I was able to shut the computer down with the power button since the computer was not responding to the keyboard or mouse.
In any case, the artifacts are still there. And, one fan is starting to sound like a model airplane buzzing around. Oh joy.

  • Dashed line / dotted line coupon effect? FCPX

Seeing if anyone has any tips or tricks on how to create a dashed line type of effect around an object in a video, making it look like a coupon or like it was cut out of paper?
The line doesn't necessarily progress around the object in the video -- it can be a static layer. Though, if anyone DOES have tips on animating the lines, that could be cool, too!
    Thanks in advance.

    Familiar with Motion?
Draw a short horizontal line. Select the Anchor point tool and drag the center to the right end of the line you drew. Replicate the line. Change the Arrangement to Outline.  In the Cell Controls section, check the Align Angle option.
You will now have a dashed outline rectangle. You can publish the Size parameter and change the size of the rectangle with the Width and Height parameters from Size. You can increase the number of line segments with the Points parameter and you can animate the outline with the Offset parameter (but there's a catch.)
When animating the offset, you will have line segments extend "outside" the base rectangle shape briefly (since they are aligned to the side they are attached to, then snap to another side when the anchor point changes over from one side to the next.)
To get around that, you need to create another rectangle that is 100 by 100 and link the Scale X and Scale Y parameters (separately) to the Width and Height of the Replicator (in the Link behavior, set the Scale to 10 for both.) Drag the rectangle onto the Replicator in the Layers List and hold until you get the popup menu -- select Add Mask to Object. [PS -- you should center the Replicator AND the rectangle before adding the rectangle as a mask!] [You can create a square rectangle then select the Shape > Geometry tab and type in the exact points: (-50, 50); (50, 50); (50, -50); (-50, -50) to create the exact size you need.]
If the mask is perfectly aligned, you can now animate the dashed line and it won't look weird. You can change the width and height of the replicator and the mask will change in perfect synchronization.
You can also make the dashes longer or shorter by manipulating the Scale X parameter in the Cell Controls of the Replicator. If you made the original line white, you can colorize from the Cell Controls as well.
After that, you'll need to figure out if you want a solid color background; a drop zone or effect source/title background; what kind of text you want inside the dashed outline (or you can manually place a Basic Title in FCPX if you like); etc...
Hope this helps...  If  you need further help with this, let me know.

  • Dash lines causing weird PDF

Hi, I have this FREEHAND MX file which uses the font DAX
(converted to paths). There is a dashed line in the layout.
After exporting the file as MACINTOSH EPS, I have distilled
    it on ADOBE DISTILLER 6.0.
In the PDF file all the "I" and "L" letters became dashed.
Most weird of all, if I use different patterns of dash for that
line, the "I" and "L" letters immitate it.
The same MACINTOSH EPS can be rasterized in PHOTOSHOP. In
    that case, with normal results.
I can send JPEGs illustrating the effect, if anyone wants it.
    Thank you for any ideas.

I looked at your files. That has to be one of the strangest
    thing I've ever
seen in FH. The same thing happens here when printing to
    Postscript file and
Distilling. It looks like a striped fill rather than a dashed
    stroke is
being applied, but as you say, it picks up the size of the
    dashes in the
    stroke.
I'm glad the AI CS2 route works for you. I had saved the FH
    file back to
FH9, opened that in Illustrator 10 and saved as PDF. The same
    striped
letters were present in the PDF!
A few things corrected the error -- making each line of
    lettering into a
composite path, or changing the dashed stroke to a solid
    stroke, or changing
the fill of the lettering to a different color, or distorting
    the shape of
    the letters.
Because the letters affected are perfect rectangles which, in
    the font
creation software, may have been drawn with a rectangle tool,
    they may have
some kind code attached that conflicts with FH's Postscript
    code for dashes.
Does this happen every time you use this font?
Have you seen this happen with any other font?
It would be interesting to contact the font designer and let
    him know what's
    happening.

  • Dashed line in muse?

When will I be able to create a dashed line in muse?

Thanks. That did it. I didn't know about the "line formatting" button (or the other two formatting buttons, for that matter). I knew about the pattern palette, but thought it only applied to area fills. I also discovered that I could apply a dashed attribute to an existing line by clicking on the "line formatting" button, selecting a line, and then using the pattern palette.
Maybe it's always been this way, but I find that I now always have one of the three lower-left "formatting buttons" selected. Is there a way to arrange for all three to be deselected, or shouldn't I worry about it?

  • Dashed line in Motion

Hi I'm tryin create an animated dashed line in motion.
I've done a lot of searches on the forum and people keep refering to this url: http://www.motionsmarts.com/tutorials/drawinglines/drawinglines1.html
However the site is closed so can't seem to find any good info.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

What you want can be done by using shape styles with either the line (shape) tool or paint brush and applying the write-on behavior. (A couple of the shape styles are dashes.)
I think that at least one of Mark Spencer's Mac Break Studio episodes is on paint brushes and/or shapes. Do a search.
There is a very good Motion discussion group in these forums. There is also a good one at Creative Cow (at which Mark Spencer is a frequent contributor).
