Lines appearing on screen...

When I'm watching videos, playing games, or even scrolling on Firefox, I get these faint horizontal lines on my screen.  It doesn't look like tearing...Just faint lines.
I have a Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS video card with 512MB RAM and I'm using the proprietary Nvidia drivers.  I've tried everything I could suggested in the wiki and previous threads...But nothing seems to fix it.  My WM is Awesome and I have mplayer configured to use VDPAU.
Here's my xorg.conf is it helps...

I'm having the same issue. Looks like this, but at a slight angle and different RGB colors (almost like JPG artifacting).
Started this evening after a cold boot. I just put my X800 XT Mac G5 edition in 2 weeks ago. No real heavy use either, as I've been gone for a week.
Looks to me like bad VRAM (according to TechTool Deluxe). I'm running the AHT now and will hopefully come to a final conclusion soon. I did test my 20" Apple monitor (DVI) with my laptop and there was no problem...so it is definitely the video card. Not sure if the aforementioned ATI ROM extender will fix it or not.
Much luck to all of us who are having this problem.

  • Pink vertical lines appearing on screen

I have a G5 about 2 years old. Recently a pale pink vertical line appeared down the screen, another about 2 weeks later and today a third line appeared. They do not affect the screen's visibility, but I wander if anyone else has found a resolution to this minor problem (without having to go out and purchase a replacement.

    Hi Ocean swimmer-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards.
Makes sure to check the cable connections at both ends.
Which monitor do you have? If you take a screen shot do the lines still show up in the same place?
    Luck-

  • Thin vertical lines appearing on screen, since wakeup from sleep mode.

My Mac G5, 2GHz, DVD-R, 1GB DDR RAM, OSX 10.4.10, ATI RADEON X800 XT has recently developed a display issue. On start-up the screen shows vertical lines across the entire screen. The colors of theses lines is varying from green to black, depending of the background color. The lines are appearing from the grey loading screen and when a profile is logged in.
Shutting down and restarting doesn't cure the problem, nor does staring in safe mode nor starting up from an install CD. I also tried re-installing the operating system, but I get the same result. I tried another monitor but I also get the lines on screen. I verified all the cables and that the graphic card is well in place in the pci slot.
If I change the resolution, I also get thoses lines but they change place on screen. Also, if I set the colors level to 256 colors, I get very little single lines but If I set the color level to the highest (36,7 Millions), the lines appears in group of 5+ and are all over the screen.
I tried taking a screenshot using the shortcut cmd-shift-3 and I can see the line in the pictures. Also, if I take a screenshot of a window that is behind the window in the front ( using cmd-shift-4-space ), I dont see the line on the screen shot.
I started to have this problem when my mac was woke up from sleep mode and the problem has persisted since then.
I guess my problem is the graphic card but I would like an external opinion before I got buy another one.
    Thanks

  • Vertical Grey lines appearing on screen

Smudgy type grey lines appearing on right hand side of my imac screen , they run from top to bottom with varing degrees. Can someone advise as what to do.

Run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode, if you get a error code then take it to your local Apple Store or AASP for a repair estimate. Chances are it's your graphics card failing. If you would like some additional information please read LCD displays common problems.

  • White line appears on screen in Indesign

Using networked PC XP Pro, ID CS3 3 MB RAM, Core2 1.82 Ghz
I am getting fine white lines running horizonatally on the left side of my monitor-- always on left side and about 3 inches long from left edge) but it appears only in Indesign. They are just on the screen and they move as a I scroll, so it is not pixels missing.
Have changed video card to one with bigger memory and it did not solve it. Also swapped out monitors with no change.
It appears to be an issue with ID or perhaps Adobe suite.
My coworker also gets the same thing on his home computer (PC CS2 in Indesign only as well)
Anyone have any suggestions or heard of this?

    > so this is an in fact an issue with Indesign?
Yes, and it seems to not be particular about the type of monitor. I've seen it on LCD and CRT.

  • My Z2 tablet has yellow lines appearing on screen edges. Advice please?

My tablet developed a yellow line down the left hand side of the screen fairly early on. This was shortly followed by another line along the bottom, and now one on the right. Advice please?

Definitely a hardware fault, you should have no problem getting the tablet replaced, or repaired otherwise.

  • Small Pink Line Appeared on Screen

Just a few days ago, a thin pink line came up on my computer screen.
I did the hard drive test and it said that I had an error
    4SNS/1/40000001:"VDOR"
I tried to look up what this meant but I got several different answers. Please help me out, I hope that my computer is okay.

    Hello eg:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I suggest you take your computer to either an Apple store or to an Apple certified technician for diagnosis. The message indicates (to me) that you have a hardware problem that cannot be diagnosed here.

  • Colour lines appear across screen of iPad

    No accidents, or misshaps.
Just appeared and won't go away with any attempt to reset.
    Heard $410 to repair.
    has anyone found a solution
    Appreciatively,  harbourlights.

If they are like little streaks across the screen, they are probably dead pixels. Have you had this iPad for a long time? Usually this happens with older devices. I don't know of a way to fix this but if you heard that there is a way to repair is, and you think you want to do this, go ahead. But typically I would suggest that if this is an important thing, you should get a new iPad...
    Sorry that I couldn't help.

  • Appear flashing line on the screen during work

I bought Macbook Air since 1st July 14. I found the flash line appear on screen during work but it's just shot line at the first and It appears just few secs. So I thought it's not too serious to me. Till now the line is seem more longer and appear frequently. Then I decide to take it to Service centre. They said my screen is not in its position. It's just a bit, If you don't look at it exactly, you won't notice it. I don't know what happen. It's usually as it was on fist day I bought it, never be fallen it. It's still in the good condition.  They fixed my problem by re-fit my screen but after I use it again I still found that flash line. what should I do? Now my air got the scratch on the screen edge from re-fitted it.  I really disappoint.

I'm assuming by "flash line" you mean there's a horizontal or vertical line randomly appearing on your screen? If that's the case I've seen that on laptops before. If its an intermittent issue try to move the screen forwards and backwards on its hinge to see if you can find one spot where that line almost always appears. You should have an issue with the cable connection to the main logic board, or the cable itself could be malfunctioning.
Also what exactly did they do when they "re-fit" your screen? Did they simple check the connectors, or actually dissemble the computer and resemble it? Either way if a cable is bad then it wouldn't have made a difference. You may be looking at a warranty replacement solution on this one.

  • My iPod Touch has had random lines appearing on the screen at certain times (videos, typing)

My iPod 5 (32gig) has recently started to do this thing where it will show random lines on the screen when either typing quickly or watching certain videos. They are close to the thickness of your fingernails and occasionally vary in color. I've had this iPod for around a year and a half now and it hasn't suffered any significant trauma. When it happens on the keyboard, the lines only appear on the keyboard. When it happens during a video it only happens where the video is playing (ie. if not on full screen, it only happens on the rectangle where the video is, not the empty space). And it also only happens on certain videos. It happened earlier on a news segment clip on the Fox website, but not on a music video I watched on YouTube three minutes later. For videos, it can be up to three of these lines at once. It first started happening to my keyboard and has since furthered itself to the videos. The screen has two small scratches but other than that it's fine. I'd also like to add even though it may not be relevant that my apps have been crashing more recently as well.
What do you recommend I do? Why is this happening? Thank you in advance!

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • How long should a reasonable person expect their computer screen to last before a pixel drop out line appears? I have been asked to pay for a repair after 1 year and 19 days!!

A thin coloured line appeared on my i-Mac screen and I have been asked to pay £139 to have it repaired. This was reduced by the manager of the Sheffield store from c£300!!
The computer is 1 year and 19 days old but the warranty period is 1 year. I was uanable to bring the machine in earlier but the problem was there 2 weeks ago within the warranty period. Still no joy from the store as I had not reported it before the 12 months!!
What with Time Capsule back-up issues I an beginning to lose faith in Apple.
Surely a reasonable person could expect the machine to be repaired FOC as a goodwill gesture?

Not after the warranty has expired.  Apple has no obligation to do so.

  • White line appearing at top of screen on SD and some HD

I've noticed a white line appearing atop my broadcast watching SD and some HD channels.
I know this line is part of the broadcast signal which is responsible for closed captioning or some other technical aspects. From what I've researched, a TV's overscan should crop out that part of the broadcast, unfortunately mine is not.
    Here's my set up:
Vizio VL320M 32" 1080P HDTV (receiving signal via HDMI from receiver)
Sony STR-DH700 Receiver  (receivers HDMI switch outputting signal to Vizio TV)
Motorola QIP6416-2 DVR STB (connected via HDMI to receiver HDMI switch)
I can crop out the white line by setting my Vizio to Zoom1 or Stretch, though this distorts the image and is a pain to reset for channels which do not experience this problem.
I can also adjust the TV's vertical posistion up a few to get rid of the line, BUT when I switch HDMI ports to goto my xbox 360, then switch back to the HDMI port my cable is on, it appears that the STB resets my signal position and the line comes back.
I haven't tried component, and really do not want to switch from HDMI to component as some sort of work around.
If anyone has any suggestion to resolve this problem, please post. Thanks for any suggestions.

I think I may have narrowed down the problem. I believe it's a handshake issue occurring between my Sony receiver and my TV, though I could be wrong. Maybe some of you A/V experts can see otherwise.
I've come to this conclusion because of the vertical setting being returned to its default position upon switching ports on my Sony's HDMI switch. Keep in mind my STB is connected to a port on my Receiver's HDMI switch and my receivers HDMI output is connected to my TV.
I can crop out the white broadcast line by simply adjusting the vertical position of my screen up of few pixels. HOWEVER, when I switch HDMI ports on my receiver, then come back to the port my STB is on, the vertical position resets itself to the default position, even though my TV's vertical setting never changed.
Here's another possible confirmation. If I press the menu button on my Vizio's remote, immediately upon the TV's menu appearing the vertical position goes to the position that's set in the TV. Strange, but that's what leads me to believe there's a conflict occurring somewhere between my receiver and TV.
I have confirmed this behavior does not occur when I connect my STB directly to my TV. I can switch my TV's HDMI ports and the vertical position holds.
I contacted Sony support, and they want me to take my receiver to a service center. I doubt that there's a problem with my receiver that can be fixed, so I'm just gonna use a workaround by activating my TV's menu so the handshake can complete after switching HDMI ports.
Since I have a universal remote that's capable of macro layering, it's just a matter of programming a layered macro to goto my STB port then activate the TV menu to initiate the vertical setting.  Maybe at some other point in time I'll lug my receiver in, though unless I'm positive it can be fixed, I really don't feel like pulling apart my home theatre and explaining this to techs if I'm not even sure it can be fixed.
If anyone else knows of a better workaround please feel free to post it. Thanks.

  • Vertical line appearing on my screen

today I started having a vertical line appear on my screen. It flickered on and off for a while and then came on for good. I can't seem to get this to go away.
By doing a simple search I've found that this is a cable defect in the product and that Apple is not addressing the issue claming this is from overuse and the cable just deteriorated - Surprise you get to pay $700 to have this fixed. This is crazy!!! These computers are supposed to be the Mercedes of the computer world! Not the Yugo that falls apart after you drive over a large bump! I've only had the computer for a year and half!
I'm posting this here to see when Apple plans to address this growing problem.
