Lines Going Across Monitor of iMac?

Hello,
I bought my iMac 3 Years Ago - iMac (24-inch Early 2008) - but within the last year I have begum to notice "lines" or "tears" going horizontally across parts of the screen. They show the colour of the screen, but can still be seen. They are seen most easily on Colours.
I've Attached some pictures, with a green box showing the lines.
Obviously my computer is way out of warenty (i didnt get Applecare) - is it worth going to an Apple Store and Asking about this? It is simply a Display fault or can it be fixed another way? I've had to have a few hardrives replaced in my machine by apple so They might give a free repair due to the previous history of the machine needing repairs.
Any Suggestions?

In the US, Apple computers are guaranteed for one year -- Applecare adds additional 2 years plus free telephone support.
I would assume the warranty in the UK would be equivalent or better.

  • Weird horizontal white lines going across the screen

I've had my nano 4g for around six months. When I first bought it, there was a single white line going across the top of the screen. It never really got in the way, so I didn't bother exchanging the ipod. Recently, another white line of pixels appeared lower on the screen. This line is there even while I reset it.
Besides replacing the screen or exchanging the iPod, is there anything that I can do to fix this?

It may (likely) be a video card issue. There is a "known issue" with certain iMacs made in a certain timeframe (2011-12 I think), and one of the telltale symptoms is vertical lines showing up on your display. Go to Apple's website (https://getsupport.apple.com/) to find out how to get support, then either call their service line (they usually pick right up) or take it into your nearest store's Genius Bar. They'll first check if your iMac's serial number is on the list of vulnerable machines, and then they'll have to do a diagnostic to prove that's the problem -- if your serial number's on the list and it fails the diagnostic, they'll replace the video card for free, even if you're not covered by AppleCare (and if you are, it's free regardless).
My iMac just had this problem, there were lines sometimes and just weird display issues other times. Eventually it just grayed out altogether and I couldn't use it. So it's likely your display problems will worsen if you don't get it looked at.
It took them about a week to ship the new video card over, install it, and return the iMac to me.
    Good luck!

  • Fine white lines going across screen Horz.

I was working a iDVD project lastnight and left it working on it as I was sleeping. When I checked on it this morning my DVD had burnt fine. However I noticed that my display had 2 fine white lines going across the screen Horz. down about 2 inches from the top of the screen. I did a shutdown and then powered on again and the machine started up fine but the lines are still there.
Anyone have any suggestions on what I can try to trouble shoot this problem before I call Apple, the machine is still covered by AppleCare.

Vertical Lines on My iMac ;-( Doesn't look so pretty with them.
Apple has a service program for (now at least) earlier iMac G5's within a specific Serial # range. Here is a link to see if yours qualifies....
    http://www.apple.com/uk/support/exchange_repair/imac.html
Otherwise, I suggest a call into Apple and make a formal complaint and get a case #. Yours isn't an isolated case, if this particular issue is reported enough times then Apple would be foolish not to extend the service program to cover all iMacs that are faulty or defective.
Asking customers to pay for expensive repairs to faulty parts just a little time out of the standard warranty is not good for their business. They need to step up and sort this out.

To be honest I don't need a lot of people commenting on this.  I need Apple to comment ...
This is a user-to-user forum. Apple does not respond to posts here. You can give Apple your feedback on the Feedback page:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback
They don't respond directly there, either. And once you post something here, people will comment as they see fit, regardless of what you originally hoped for. That's just the way it is with a public forum.
Try Groove for iPad. People seem to think it's a great replacement to the previous music app.

    - See if placing the iPod in Recovery mode will allow a restore.. It bypasses the passcode (and erases the iPod)
    - Next try DFU mode

  • My G5 screen has faint lines going across it??

My G5 screen has faint diaginal lines going across it, but when I am on the internet it is crisp and none of the lines show up??? Has anyone else ran into this?

Could be the first signs of either a failing video card, or a failing screen.  Try running the Apple Hardware Test that came with your install discs.

  • My ipad 1st gen has loads of coloured lines going across the screen so I can't see any ideas ?

My ipad first gen has loads of coloured lines going across the screen so I can't see any ideas ??

Try a reset: Press and hold both Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until the Apple logo appears.
If that didn't fix things, do a restore:

If that still didn't fix the issue, then there is probably a hardware problem.

Did you already try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again? You will not lose data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches after installing new software or apps.
If this does not work, set it up as new device, explained here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137
If still no luck, get it serviced by Apple or visit an Authorized Apple Service Provider next to your place and let them have a look at your device.

  • Help! I've got a white line going across the top to my I pod

I have a 80gb classic ipod and I've got a white line going across the top. it is extreamly annoying and nothing can fix it not even restoring my ipod what can i do

That sounds possibly like there are dead pixels on the screen. I am not too sure about what type of screen is in the new iPods, but on my Sony PSP there are white spots in places, which I was informed were dead pixels. Sony mentions it in their literature regarding the PSP.
You should be able to take it back to your Apple store, and they should be able to take a look at it for you.

  • My mac screen comes out with white fuzzy lines going across the screen, it used to just go back to normal and out of no where it freezes and the white fuzzy lines go across the screen. Now it is frozen at the opening screen. what do i do?

My mac screen is frozen with white fuzzy lines going across the screen. I shut it off and turn it back on but it still remains white fish lines on the start up screen. I've tried revolting it, it works sometimes but now its stuck at the starting screen. I have been at this for 2 hours to try and fix it but nothing has changed about the screen. What do I do, if I break this computer I'm screwed.

I would post a picture of the screen but I do not know how to do that

I do not really know but try a Reset  [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release].

  • Line going across screen

The other morning when I first picked up my phone I noticed there was a small line going across the tip of my screen. And since then it has grown, and shrinked and it does this several times throughout the day. I hadn't updated my phone so I went ahead and did that, yet I still have the line. I've tried doing a restart on it and the line still shows up. Has anyone else had this problem and have anyway of fixing it?

hey.. did you manage to get rid of those growing gray lines? I have a 2g and facing the same issue, they seem to be growing every day and I have about six lines now.. really annoying..
