Lines in Gradients

Hello Everyone,
I am creating a menu in Indesign cs5. When I try to print the file, be it as an indesign file or as a pdf from acrobat x I get random vertical lines in letters where I used gradients. Any Ideas on how best to remedy this? I've seen some info online suggesting that flattening the image can fix postscript issues but I am not really sure how to do that or if it would even help. If it is of any help I am printing on xerox 700 digital press using creo rip software.

  • Mysterious lines and gradient when printing from Illustrator or pdf on PC and MAC

First of all I have to admit I'm not a big computer brainiac but this issue keeps on reoccurring no matter what computer I use. When creating files/layouts in Illustrator and either saving them to pdf and then printing or printing directly from Illustrator either from a PC or from Mac (I use both) the print outs come out with mysterious lines and gradient not matter what colour is used. The lines occur on solid colour prints, when gradient or transparency are not used and when they are used as well. Any ideas suggestions how to make them go away?

    Monica,
Here's an image of a print out that was meant to be a solid black colour. This happens with other colours as well not just with black.

  • Draw line with Gradient

    Hi,
I am trying to implement drawing on canvas with two colors, red and blue.
For example, to draw with the mouse "with two colors".
I do not need a filled rectangle.
I am looking into gradient but without any success.
Is there a better way to draw a line with two colors?
I also tried to use BasicStroke, but the line had an inner/outer strokes.
    Please help with suggestions.

    Log Message:
Line bug fixes when using gradient strokes
SDK-21272 - Lines with gradient (LinearGradientStroke) draw as solid color if perfectly vertical / horizontal
StrokedElement was not taking the stroke weight into account when passing the bounds to the stroke. The gradient strokes rely on the bounds to help them transform the gradient to fit the shape of the stroke.
SDK-21274 - Line with gradient stroke does not draw properly
This bug occurs when the Line has a non-zero x and/or y values and is sharing a DisplayObject. StrokedElement was passing the stroke the measuredX and measuredY position as part of the bounds. Instead, I've changed it to pass in drawX + measuredX and drawY + measuredY which accounts for the drawing offset position.

This bug figures out also when creating a custom spark ComboBox, then trying to programatically update the userProposedSelectedIndex property. The proposed selected index is selected, but does not apply the same skin as when mouse is on rollover or item is selected due to up and down keys.
The issue seems like updating the status of the item renderer to rollover or selected to get the same skin applied.

  • How do I copy and paste a gradient color from one document and then use the gradient on another document?

I am making business cards. On the back of the cards there are two lines with gradients. Below is a card with a magenta gradient. I want to select both lines and change the magenta gradient to the orange gradient from the file below. How do I do this? (I do not want to copy a paste the orange lines and then move them over the magenta ones.) I just want to select the magenta lines and change their color to the orange gradient. This will insure absolute alignment. I want to do repeat the process with several other gradients too. Thank you.

    David,
As I (mis)understand it, you may:
    1) Copy one orange gradient path to the magenta gradient path document;
    2) Select the two magenta gradient paths and change the Fill to None;
    3) Select the orange gradient path;
    4) Select the two magenta gradient paths and change the Fill to Gradient.
That should give you the desired replacement. For multiple use of the same gradient, you may consider a gradient swatch.

  • Sneak Peek #3 about the future of Photoshop: dashed and dotted lines

Zorana Gee shared another Photoshop Sneak Peek, this time about dashed and dotted lines:
Could it be useful in your workflow?

I think dotted and dashed lines with gradients sounds useful. I won't have to go to Illustrator and back to get those functions.
    BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY
I would like to see some other upgrades to the pen tool and vector masks:
    • All too often I can't really see the pen tool line when I am making a vector selection – it gets lost in the clutter. Could there be an option to assign a color to the path? Hot green or magenta?
    • I would like to be able to change the size that vector points display. If I could make the points appear slightly larger it would often make editing easier.
    • I would like to be able to select two points very close to one another and JOIN them like in AI. I don't understand why the pen tool doesn't share more of the functions of the pen tool in Illustrator such as CUT. It sometimes seems like the vector tools in Photoshop and Illustrator were developed completetly independent of one another.
Attached (I hope) are images demonstrating how hard it can be to see paths. Can you see the paths? In the first image the path is there, not selected. In the second the path is selected. This makes my work very irritating sometimes.

  • Why my gradient mask at home renders smooth, but is clipped at work?

I created a number of gradient masks applied to images with a basic 100 to 0 black gradient, on my Mac at home. They look smooth in Illustrator, and rendered smooth both as a PDF and exported to a PNG.
Gradient Mask from my Mac at home:
But when I open the same illustrator document on my Mac at work the gradation of the mask is clipping. So instead of a smooth transition there's now a hard line.
Gradient Mask on my Mac at work:
This is the same file, opened on different Macs. Both identical versions of Illustrator CS6, identical color settings, identical color profiles.
The main differences are my Mac at home is a 2009 MacPro running OS 10.9, and my Mac at work is a 2008 MacPro running OS 10.8.
I've created and recreated gradient masks over and over again, and I cannot get a smooth transparency gradient mask at all on my Mac at work.
This presented a problem, as the client had to have last minute revisions when I was at work, and could not produce a smooth image, I was forced to deliver the final graphic with clipped gradient masks.

So deleting preferences didn't fix it. I even rasterized the gradient to see if an image mask would work better, that didn't work. Then I toggled "invert mask." I was suprised to see that once I inverted the mask (which reversed the gradient), the transparency was smooth from 0 to 100.
So I've figured out a work around for the problem, but it's still not resolved.
    Invert gradient mask
    Rotate gradient mask 180°
Adjust gradient mask break points to accomidate reversal
    Here's the result:
Now if someone can explain to me why a gradient mask doesn't work in one direction, but it does when it's inverted.

  • Gradients complecated in Illustrator: best way to do them?

Please could you advise as the best way to create the gradients in the file here:
    http://www.graphics3d.plus.com/silverman2.jpg
I have the task to make it capable of being printed 2 foot tall so at 300 dpi that would be 7000 pixels high by 12000 pixels wide. I do have an 8gb memory on my workstation but I would imagine it would be better to create this image in a vector format that would easily scale and keep its crispness. Please could you give some advice as to how to get these fairly complecated gradients done in illustrator? Or should I just airbrush them in Photoshop and import?
    Thanks for any advice?

I haven't tried the trace features in Illustrator but you might look into
    that.
I believe I'd use a combination of expanded lines and gradient meshes to
draw this. If you make expanded lines you can adjust the thinness and
thickness of the line a very specific points.

  • Layout box from end to end of the screen

The caprice is simple: I want to create 100px tall line (vertical gradient) from end to end of the screen at the top of it, independently of screen's size.
I have already set up the header which is 80px tall and appears 5px from the top (so there is a space where background gradient should continue to appear). The sites main content (header included) is 930px wide-positioned at the center (once again - so the background gradient should appear at the both sides of main content field (crossing the wraper) and at scattered instances - at the gaps too.)
I understand how to create gradient itself (1 pixel wide jpg or png which repeats over and over), but how and where to define layout box for current needs?
    Any suggestions?

If you look at my website, there are several gradient background images used on the page that flow from top gradient to bottom solid color fills.

  • Arch on external hd

I have arch installed on my 40gb exterbal hard drive. The 'root'  filesystem is defined as /dev/sda1 in /etc/fstab.
The problem is that depending on a pcs config, this changes. For example if another pen drive is plugged in it may be ./dev/sda1 instead and boot will fail. The same happens if a SATA hard drive is installed - they register as /dev/sdx.
I get dumped to a command line where i have to remunt / rwx, edit fstab and reboot. This gets annoying, how do live cds, and other distros that boot from pen drives get around this?
Also on a differnet note i cant get  a working xorg.conf, Xorg -config creates a file but when i use it all i get is a black screen with the default X cursor. I can run Xorg without xorg.conf but at the moment its not displaying enough colours- i  can see lines on gradients.
I run Xfce4 and previously the problem went away when i uinstalled xorg-video-drivers, but after a comlete reinstall the problem persists.
Again how to pen drive based distros and live cds get around this?
    Any ideas?

Hi I have a problem on boot how did you solved it? (description of my problem is here http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=19434)

  • PNG fix for background images?

I am putting together an artsy-fartsy design with lots of
stylish wavy lines, fine gradients and dropdown shadow effects and
was wondering if there was a PNG fix for background images. Most
out there seem only to apply to images included in the html.
Otherwise I can use JPEGs with a bit of the background included
behind them (I hate doing this)...

    Hi,
Hmmm. I think you have a great point there. In my opinion, I
think that there is no png fix for background images. Use jpegs
with background. I do the same.

  • Gradient white lines in .eps file

    Hi there,
I designed a vector in Adobe Illustrator CS6, but when saved as an .eps file, white vertical lines appear in my gradient.
What is happening? I've tried rasterizing the vector at 300 PPI with anti-aliasing, but the edges look jagged (but I really want to keep it as a vector anyway)
Does anyone have any idea what I could do?
I don't know whether it's relevant, but I'm using process colours (but that's only because I couldn't get spot colours to work properly).
    Thanks

    AlvinKeegan wrote:
The lines appear if I place the file in Adobe Photoshop. If I open the EPS file in Adobe Illustrator though, the gradient is as smooth as a baby's behind.
of course it is. When you open this EPS in Illustrator, you don't really open an EPS, but the AI part Illustrator embedded into the EPS file in the first place.
Photoshop is not a suitable tool for "checking" an EPS file
EPS ist not suitable for most modern workflows either. In case you really need this for transferring your logo to Photoshop (or any other Creative Suite app), simply save an AI file (with PDF compatibility).
In case you need the EPS for exchange with other software, please tell us which options you chose on saving the EPS.

  • Gradient lines showing on imported photoshop images

I am using photoshop for the background of my captivate
videos - I can see the gradient lines when I play the video as (
next 5 slides ) I have tried increasing jpeg quality to 100
    percent.
I am using png files ( save as png from photoshop) should i
save as to jpeg or well, there are lots of options to save in
photoshop - which is best for captivate -
Also - i use the standard 72 res - is that right ! I also
have fireworks but photoshop is much better so would prefer to use
    that.

    72dpi should be fine.
I save Photoshop images as 24 or 16bit (RGB) BMP files then
    import those
into Captivate. It seems to retain the quality a lot better
    than a
pre-compressed format like JPEG or PNG.

  • Gradient to transparent have thin line when stroke is 0 pt

I have a simple rectangle with a gradient that fades to white and has an effect of multiply and opacity set to 85%. Where it fades to white the background image meets the gradient so in effect the rectangle color fades to transparent.
However, even as I have no stroke, 0pt, and 0 opacity on stroke in the effects box there is still a thin line around the box, no matter what I do I can't seem to affect it.
My text is in a separate text frame in a layer on top of this gradient rectangle. This gives me solid color on the text.
How can I get rid of this line around the rectangle? What can give a thin line besides stroke?

No, "Stitching" was not it. Exporting to later pdf-versions didn't help.
When I revisited this problem as I resized the affected text box and the problem reappeared, I decided to cut out the text and delete the old box. Then I made a new empty text box and pasted the text into that. Problem gone!
I still don't know what the problem was as I could find no stroke nor any effects related to this box. I'm going to open the original file later and delete everything but the affected box just to see if there is some setting somewhere not so obvious.

  • Vignette in lightroom 5 results in gradient lines

When using the post crop vignette all my images have bad lines/gradient marks.
I was using the same camera on my previous laptop and had no problem.
My camera is a Pentax K5 ii shooting in RAW(DNG) sRGB at full 16mp.
My Laptop is an ASUS N550JK i7, with 2gb dedicated graphics card and 16GB RAM.
I can't understand what is going wrong but saving a RAW photos with vignette results in a 7mb photo that may aswel be a 600kb one.
    please help.

I see very little banding in either of the DNGs and even less when I apply my own adjustments. I believe there are a couple of issues at work here.
The Asus N550JK laptop appears to use an LG LP156Wf4 panel:
    Asus N550JK-CN109H Notebook Review - NotebookCheck.net Reviews
Issue 1: This panel is only 6bits/color (262,144 colors) as described on Page 4 of the below datasheet. Even with a standard sRGB gamut gradient banding is going to be more visible.
    http://www.datadisplay-group.com/fileadmin/pdf/produkte/Displays/LG/LP156WF4-SLBA_Datashee t.PDF
Issue 2: The OP's Basic panel settings used are exacerbating the banding because the Highlights slider is set positive (+38), which is incorrect usage of the Highlights control for this image. In addition the 'As Shot' White Balance setting is incorrect (7350, +45).
Here are the settings I used. Try these settings and see if it helps to reduce the banding.
On my display there is ZERO banding visible with the above settings and Post-Crop Vignette of -100 Amount. BTW- My HP 2509m display is also a 6bit/color panel, but it uses Frame Rate Control (FRC) to achieve 8bit/color depth (16.7M colors). "Each pixel is divided into Red, Green and Blue sub-pixels or dots which are arranged in vertical stripes. Gray scale or the brightness of the sub-pixel color is determined with a 8-bit gray scale signal for each dot, thus, presenting a palette of more than 16,7M colors with Advanced-FRC (Frame Rate Control)."
It appears the LG LP156Wf4 panel in your Asus laptop does not incorporate FRC and is probably better suited for gaming. You can use an external monitor to overcome this issue.
