Lines on screen after os x update

I updated to 10.9.3 a few days ago and I now randomly see brief vertical lines on-screen. Just a moment ago it was a full grid. It stays for just long enough that I can see on the screen, the longest was about...2-3 seconds. It most often occurs when loading a new tab on a web browser, or during/after launch of an app. There are no error messages. Can anyone advise?

Hi shawnmo,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that when you experiencing issues with lines on your display. I would suggest some specific steps such as resetting the PRAM and SMC. These steps can be found in the following article.
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573
Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
Restart your computer.
I hope this helps,
-Joe

iPod 4th gen stuck on apple screen after I tried updating to IOS 6. It won't turn off or reset even after updating iTunes to latest version. My iPod doesn't show up when I connect to iTunes. HELP PLEASE!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Lots of crashing, freezing, and strange lines on screen after recent update

I dutifully update the software when asked and suddenly I have all the following symptoms. Any advice? Thanks!
    AD
    1. A small line appears in some windows; it's multi-colored and about 3 pixels high. It goes away when I resize or play with the window.
    2. My computer crashes more often when being woken up from sleeping by pressing the mouse button; I will press my mouse to wake up the computer and it just shuts off. This has happened for the past year but happens much more frequently this week after the recent update. I took it in to the apple store months ago and they could not repeat it. It happened 3x today.
    3. A few programs have frozen / stopped responding, way too more frequently than normal.
    Thanks!

Hi again Andy, I don't make it over here to Leo very often.
    Here's what I'd try...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
Leo clears a lot more caches than Tiger does in Safe boot.

  • Blank screen after display driver update Satellite Pro P200

I installed the latest ATI Mobility Radeon HD2600 display driver (8.432, from the Toshiba site via Tempo) on my Satellite Pro P200 yesterday. On rebooting everything looks fine as far as the Windows Vista Business "Please wait ..." screen, but instead of displaying the login page I get a blank screen (with a mouse cursor that moves around as normal). All I can do at this point is power off, and I've run out of ideas on how to get any further.
    Things I've tried:
    # booting into safe mode, low-resolution video or last known good configuration all result in the same blank screen.
    # connecting to the system using remote desktop (to disable the driver) isn't possible because the system hasn't loaded the network drivers yet.
    # I can't revert to a restore point because Vista can't find any (I made a manual one after installing windows updates on a couple of days ago).
I can run a command prompt from the system recovery options and would prefer to use that to disable the driver +if+ I knew how before resorting to the more drastic options.
A web search (http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ati+catalyst+vista+blank+screen&hl=en&sa= N) reveals that this has happened on a wide range of laptops with
previous releases of the driver, but none of the links I've looked at give a solution that's available to me.

No joy with an external screen so I bit the bullet and reinstalled from the product recovery disk. I tried expert mode to retain the data partition but that failed twice, so I had to restore it from the previous day's backup after doing a full reinstall. Two consolations, though.
    # It allowed me to increase the size of the data partition.
    # The display driver update worked fine on the fresh install.
Needless to say I've since found [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927525] which describes how you can disable a problem device driver (atikmdag in my case) from the system recovery command prompt :-(
Hopefully the instructions in there will help anybody who gets caught with similar problems.

  • IPhone 4: My IPhone keeps in the "plug-into-iTunes-screen" after trying to update to iOS 5.0. The phone is not showing up as a device in iTunes anymore.

My IPhone doesn't turn on and keeps in the "plug-into-Tunes-screen" after update to new IOs 5.0 yesterday. I also tried to restore it, but it still keeps in the plugin mode. In ITunes the IPhone doesn't show up as a device anymore, but Windows 7 detects it as a camera. I started the problem diagnose via ITunes and it says "iPhone can't be found".I'm using the new version of iTunes.
    Can anyone help me?

I have the exact same problem and have just logged on here to see if anyone can help also?  My iphone is up and working but itunes won't recognise it as a device... just updated itunes aswell.
Any help would be hugely appreciated!!

please help me how to get out of the connect to i tunes screen which came after trying to update software of ipad 3 through software update in the ipad i t is not coming out of the connect to itunes scree neither being able to switch it off

Try and force your iPad into Recovery Mode
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

  • [SOLVED!] nasty vertical lines on screen after suspend or hibernation

it's all in the title.. the lines appear while suspending already (thin green or blue lines) and linger on the screen after it's resumed, becoming thick white lines that cover everything).
    - i'm using pm-utils
    - i use kms with an old radeon mobility card, which doesn't seem to be properly configured (see my other thread viewtopic.php?id=113016).
    - the /var/log/pm-suspend.log doesn't provide any useful information. everything looks fine.
    - the system didn't resume from hibernation until i set the resume hook. now it does.
    - suspending/hibernating from the command line or with the lxde menu produces the same result.
    Last edited by v43 (2011-02-17 07:21:07)

none of these trials solved the problem.
i uninstalled everything except pm-utils and acpi+acpid, as it where before. btw, do i need acpid?
    now with the vga drivers...
    EDIT:
    - removing kms: didn't work
    - vbetool seems useless
    - trying the new framebuffer Uvesafb i get a black screen (i'll have to use a boot cd to resolve this)
    any suggestion at all??

  • PC fails to reboot and shows blank screen after automatic windows updates including SP

Pavilion- a1130n"  WINXP ProfessionalC fails to reboot and shows blank screen  after automatic install ing windows updates including SP 3

I would love to say that a refresh worked for me however it did not.It takes about 30 Minutes total I was able to trace part of the issue to a Registry Key that was tagging the processor. Because my BIOS manages its own temp gauge and windows is trying to
build on in I had to turn the BIOS one off as well as for some reason I get better funtionality with Visualization off.
I am still dealing with a lag but I was able to get ride of the freeze that made the computer completely useless.

  • Weather on home screen after 2.2 update.

The weather function on my home screen has ceased to update after my 2.2 update.  I've checked the settings and the auto download  is checked.  I continually get a connection error message saying the connection was dropped after an attempted update.  What gives??

I have a similar issue, except when I check the automatic refresh, the check bar dissappears after I exit out of settings.

  • Black screen after windows auto update

New laptop in use for 3 weeks.  After Windows auto update restart I get to splash screen and am able to enter Windows password to log onto desktop.  After successfully entering password I am not able to view my desktop; I get the black screen with cursor function; cursor disappears when moved within an inch of left or right of screen (seems to go behind something).  I believe I am at the desktop but just not able to view it, because I receive app popups on the black screen (need to update McAfee, etc).
In safe mode I restored to pre auto update date; manually installed all Windows updates;  worked fine until NEXT auto update, same problem.
Graphics Card:  Stock Intel HD Graphics
    Monitor:  Generic PnP
Why would it be fine with the manual update and not after auto update?
I do not have an external monitor to attach this laptop for diagnosis.  I have run windows partition checks and hard drive partition checks with no issues to resolve.
I did get an error message once when running a diagnosis (can't remember which) : Windows Update Error 0x80070490
No real luck finding anyway for me (the average Joe) to resolve this issue.
If this is a harddrive issue I don't want to keep pussyfooting around while my warranty window shrinks.
I have downloaded driver updates from HP, but cannot get the Synaptics Touchpad driver to download.  I don't think this is my issue though.
I am going to manually update all my drivers then manually update Windows.  We will see what happens on the next auto update.
Please advise if this is an issue I need to just give up on and return this laptop for replacement.  It seems like this is not a completely unheard of issue, but I'm shocked at what we are asked to do to attempt to resolve it.  Out of my depth.

    Hi @Justanothermom
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you are having troubles with a black screen after an update. I am happy to help you with this.
Firstly, there is nothing wrong with modifiying your update settings. I was going to suggest it myself as I read through your post, and then saw you ask the question. Sometimes updates can have unintended results by the creator. With all the different combinations of  hardware, and the fact that updates come from different sources, it is one of those things that is hard to completely control.
Please see the following for how to make adjustments to your update settings.
Turn automatic updating on or off - windows.microsoft.com
Or if you know which update seems to be causing the issue you can take a look at this page:

  • Blank Screen After Today's Updates

I was thrilled to see the new kernel and intel drivers show up in today's updates, but after rebooting, I have a blank screen on my E6410 laptop, which has Intel graphics. The Dell logo comes up, then the Grub menu, and then the screen goes blank. It was working perfectly fine before the update. Did anyone else run across this?
Last edited by jlacroix (2010-11-26 04:14:51)

Same problem here. How do you downgrade anything or change any settings when the screen just goes blank right at the start?
edit: I'll share some more for good measure. I'm on an nvidia gfx so it shouldn't be Intel-related. The system actually seems to be booting since I can log in and sudo reboot in the dark to prompt a reboot, which means I could technically try and fix this without seeing any output. That just seems dumb, though.
edit2: Removing vga=773 from the kernel line at boot at least restores cli visibility. startx returns "no screens found" so I'll try a downgrade.
edit3: Downgrading to 2.35, along with downgrading nvidia & nvidia-utils to 256-something as well as ndiswrapper and tiacx finally got me back to where I need to be with X working fine.

  • HT201263 My iPhone 4 is stuck on the "Connect to iTunes screen" after trying to update to iOS 7.0.4! Help!

I was attempting to update my iPhone 4 to the new iOS 7.0.4 via my computer after I plugged it in to create a backup copy and something went wrong before it could finish and I recieved an error message. Now my phone is stuck on the "Connect to iTunes screen". I've tried everything to reset & restore my phone with no luck!
    I have:
    -Restarted my computer
-Updated iTunes to most current version
-Turned phone on and off several times, waiting up to a half hour before turning on (to be greeted directly with apple logo then the connect to iTunes screen)
-Turned on, turned on and held home button (nothing happens)
-My computer is NOT recognizing my device at ALL! But when I plugged my boyfriends iPhone in, it detected it no problem.
I tried calling my phone from the other phone and it goes straight to voicemail. I am super frustrated! Does anybody know what is going on?

I was able to restore my phone!!!
I called Apple and they said there was nothing more I could do. I called my carrier Verizon and was able to get my computer to recognize my device after trying this-
    Solution:
After trying EVERYTHING this is the ONLY thing that worked-
I took the USB connector cable out of the USB port it was in, and tried another one on the otherside of my laptop and iTunes was able to discover my phone in recovery mode. My phone was reset and everything is fine ( thank gosh for backup copies!)

  • Blue screen after installing windows update

I get this error message after I install the windows updates. I have the K8n Neo Platinum with Nvidia Nforce 3 250gb chipset. I am running XP X64. The computer runs great until I do the windows update. I have tried changing setting in the bios but that don't matter. Here are 3 pix. I had to take them quick so they aren't very good. I am right now re-formatting again so I am on my other computer.
OK how do you add pix from a digital camera on this forum??? ,
Here is what it says. stop: c000021a (fatal system error) this session manager initialization system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000263 (0x00000000 0x00000000) the system has been shut down.
It then goes into a reboot mode and comes back with the same blue screen error code.
    Help

I e-mailed MSI tech support today also about the problem. A month ago I did the same thing. The tech said "oh I haven't heard of that happening before"  So thanks for the link. I can't wait to get the "haven't had that happen before" DUUHHHH again. I will just link them. A month ago I wrote went through about 10 of the updates. Doing a re-install, updating and see what happens. I wrote down a couple of them that cause problems. It was just way to much work to time consuming so I just stopped.
I don't quite understand that voltage thing with the processor. I would think you should be able to set the bios to "fail safe setting" and it should run and do everything.
It don't look like they posted a fix for this problem. But I didn't install any of the security updates anyways. I wonder if it is just my Motherboard or what. There must be someone out there who is running x64 with one of these boards.
    thanks again.

  • Black screen after windows 7 update?

Last night i left my Macbook Pro downloading a game on steam overnight, when i got up in the morning it seems like it restarted and went onto the mac login screen. So i restarted it into windows and it had been installing an update, and it said something like "installing clientregistry" with a number/number (it was the last step). It then restarted again and so i booted into windows, except after the screen where the colours fly around, i can see my cursor for a tiny bit then the screen goes black. You can tell it's still on as the fans continue to run and the brightness is a bit higher than what it would be if it was off. When i go onto the mac side, it says something like NTFS 3G force or abort, i chose force but it doesn't change anything. If i boot into safe mode in windows (when it detects it didn't shut down properly), i can get to the login screen and login but it says error cannot load profile, and it restarts after a certain time.
It's very important that my windows works as the only way i can access a copy of windows 7 disc is from school, and the holidays just started

    Thanks for the reply,
    if i hold fn+f8 it gives me heaps of options, i tried the safe mode and it loads a ton of things but gets stuck on class.pnp at the end. Before safe mode would work and let me in for a couple of seconds before a force restart with a smaller resolution, but now it doesn't go through? Also, i tried to install something called macfuse but it doesn't work properly and now i don't even think i can read the volume through my mac side. When i boot up it comes up with two warnings;
    i) NTFS-3G Mount unsuccessful
The disk contains an unclean file system (0, 0).
The file system wasn't safely closed on Windows.
    Fixing.
/Library/Filesystems/fusefs.fs/Support/fusefs.kext failed to load - (libkern/kext) link error; check the system/kernel logs for errors or try kextutil(8) the MacFUSE file system is unavailible(71)
ii) A very similar log as the one previously but with NTFS-3G written all over it
I'll uninstall macfuse as it proved useless. Before i could see the windows hd on the desktop, now it's just gone, maybe it's corrupted somehow? Should i try repairing it as one of the options in the safe-boot selection area?
