Lines popping up all over the display

I've got the late 2006 White IMac Intel Core 2 Duo.
I've got these horrible lines coming up all the time. It was dealable for a while but I recently moved, and since then it had gotten much worse, and not very good performance. I just erased the hard drive to start fresh, I'm pretty much just using it for streaming videos and now it stalls constantly and the lines are getting worse. My guess is a bad logic board? Anyone got any other thoughts of what it could be or how I could test it?
Thank for any help

There are a couple of threads on this issue.
I have a late 2006 imac (24" screen) which was experiencing these problems -- lines which were contained to specific windows -- other graphic anomalies -- intermittent freezes as the lines increased. It got quite bad about 3 weeks ago and the computer became virtually unusable.
Genius bar was unhelpful after I shlepped the whole thing in -- suggested doing a clean reinstall of system and also (after my query) suggested replaced the Video Card -- which wasn't in stock anyway.
At any rate, I brought the computer home -- searched the forums and read threads. Based upon MANY suggestions, I downloaded smcfancontrol which increases fan speed and decreases the temperature of the computer. Fingers crossed my problem is solved -- no lines and no freezes since then.
I certainly would recommend trying it before doing anything more drastic. The problem seems to be particularly acute with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphic cards -- perhaps they are more heat sensitive -- perhaps as they age, they become more heat sensitive. That it is heat related (at least for me) is also supported since the computer "crisis" occurred during the first heat wave so the ambient temperature of my condo was higher than it's been in many months.
At any rate, it's a simple application -- if it doesn't work, you haven't invested much but it worked for me and a lot of other people with the identical issue.

Sounds like a hardware failure. Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

  • LINES AND DOTS ALL OVER THE SCREEN!! ... AGAIN!

    howdo,
I recently got a new 20" intel mac, after less than 24hrs the display has all kinds of weird lines and dots all over it, it kept flickering. Funny thing was that if the machine was then turned off, after about 20mins everythin went back to normal. This happened a few times and after a couple of call to Apple the machine went back, they replaced it with a nice new one ... problem solved??
    Not quite!!
The second machine has been fine, after almost a month with no problems the dreaded lines/dots and flicker have reared up. I thought maybe it was something external causing interference, so removed my sound sticks and all other electrical stuff like lamps etc but it is still happenin intermittantly.
Anyone got any ideas?? or am I gone end up throwin the thing out of my window???

    Ok
The only peripherals were Harmon kardon soundsticks, these have been removed, and a canon printer. The printer seem to be fine. Other electrical stuff in the room includes:- 2 READING LAMPS/ AN IBOOK G4/ POWERBOOK G4/ AN ADVENT LAPTOP/ ANOTHER CANON PRINTER.
I cant understand how these would affect the screen but its gotta be something like eh.
The only software that has been added is IWORK 06/ MICROSOFT OFFICE MAC/ MACSWORD.
The problem usually happens when the mac is left asleep rather than closed down or if it is left on without being used????
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

I doubt that you have a software 'bug' - looks more as if you're having a problem either with the GPU, the screen or the connection between the two.
Since you're still under warranty, I would advise that you take your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them diagnose and fix the problem. I don't believe that it's anything that can be remedied via software.

  • What else do I do when it freezes up and lines show up all over the screen?

I'll show you what I mean.
    (Was watching a music video)
Whenever I watch a video/tv show I can see the video clear at first, but after a couple of seconds my iPod freezes up and lines show up and spread all over the screen. I already reseted it. I did that a couple of times already. What else should I do?
I just bought my 30gb iPod Video on Monday. Should I return it? What happens if I do? Exchange it for a good one? What will it cost me?
I'm sorry if this topic has already been posted before,I'm new to this forum,so I don't really know.
I need help while it's still early.

  • Stripes all over the display

    Hey guys!
    I'm new here!
I just want to share something. Since the install of OSX Mavericks my MacBook Pro acts strange. The waiting ball a.k.a rainbow sometimes pops up out of nothing. And some other bugs.
But today i closed the lid and after a few mins i opent my lid and there it was. All kinds of colours and stripes over the screen. Did someone else experienced this problem? The mouse pointer is clearly visible so this means this is an software bug.
Maybe there is something serious? I restarted the MacBook and it works great after that.
Sorry for the bad grammer, English is not my main language.

  • ITunes is popping up all over the place-help!

I just installed new external speakers for my laptop and something about them changed iTunes. Now, if iTunes is running in any form then it pops up on top of whatever window I am working in constantly, about every fifteen seconds or so. (While writing this I've accidentally paused my music three or four times cause it popped up when I hit the spacebar.) I didn't change any settings when trying to install the speakers. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Highlight all teh tracks for that album, right-click > Get Info.
Say yes to changing multiple items.
Type "Kid Rock" in the *Album Artist* field.
He probably has a guest artist on one or more of the tracks that's causing it.

  • After down load there are add all over the place, firefox is unusable.

my firefox got invaded by triviot or something like that so i uninstalled it and then downloaded it fresh. the download had more problems 1. wes is in the search box under fireball opening screen. now this is in the line where the site you are using goes. " http://lp.getfree-soft.net/mpc________/?o=42&campid=14406&creaid=5552&reqid=535945901" different adds are popping up all over the screen its a mess...

    Could you:
    (1) Visit the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program and click the "Installed on" column heading to group by date. I suspect you will find unwanted and probably undisclosed bundle items (AKA garbage) that snuck in with some free software. Remove what you can.
    (2) Scan using some of the effective free cleanup programs listed in our support article: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].
Note: don't remove places.sqlite or bookmarks-2014....json files that the cleaning programs may recognize as having history or bookmarks of bad sites because this could clear all your bookmarks.
    (3) Start Firefox back up again and check for any lingering problem extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then you can disable all nonessential or unrecognized extensions.
Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    (4) Finally, to reset your home page, search service, and new tab page to their defaults, you can use this one-click solution: [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/searchreset/]. If you prefer to do that by hand, we can post the steps.
    Does that flush the ads?

  • Get ads popping up all over. Switched to Explorer. Prefer Firefox

I am getting ads popping up all over the place. I tried Explorer and don't have the problem. I deleted Firefow and reinstalled but get the same problem. I did a full scan of my computer with my security software. I have switched to Explorer because I don't get the problem there. I would still prefer to use Firefox but can't.

This will be a 3-part answer... I'm assuming this problem in on your Windows 7 system.
    '''Part I'''
The most common culprit is a bad add-on. Here's my suggested procedure for tracking down and cleaning up bad add-ons and other ad injectors. I know it seems long, but it's not that bad.
    (1) Open the Windows '''Control Panel''', Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Take out as much trash as possible here.
    (2) Open Firefox's '''Add-ons page''' using either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click '''Plugins'''. Set nonessential and unrecognized plugins to "Never Activate".
In the left column, click '''Extensions'''. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions.
Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    Any improvement?
    (3) You can search for remaining issues with the '''scanning/cleaning tools''' listed in our support article: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]]. These on-demand scanners are free and take considerable time to run. If they finish quickly and especially if they require payment, you may have a serious infection. I suggest the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.
    Success?

After putting still photos into the time line the pop up all over my video when I burn a CD or load to YouTube.
The video in FCPX looks fine, But when I load it the photos will play over top of each other or double play.

Export your project as Quick Time Current Settings by choosing Export Media in the Share menu. See if the movie plays correctly in QT Player. If it does, upload that to Web.

  • When i open my computer I get the white screen with apple symbol and there are vertical lines all over the screen with green pixels and after a few minutes the screen gets grey and I get message to restart my computer what happens

3 years ago I bought an IMac Desktop that I am using for a lot of things but the most important for dvd montage in Imovies and Idvd.
Now today when I opened my computer I get as usual the white screen with the Apple symbol but there were all over the screen vertical lines with green pixels and after a while the screen gets grey and I get message to restart my computer using the power button or the restart button and when I do so each time the same is happening somebody can tell me what is happening and what caused this. This computer is my work and now I have no income anymore.
On the Apple support site they are asking to enter the serial number and when I do so I get message it is wrong but it is the only one I have and I buy this computer in Cairo Egypt. I am living in Hurghada in Egypt for the moment. When I call the technical support of the shop where I buy it they are telling me that it is the hard disk or ram and that I probably lost everything on it and they are asking a big amount to repair.
Can somebody advise me on this matter. Thanks in advance

You can find the serial number either in About this Mc in the Menu bar under the , or it should be on a sticker under the foot of the machine.
If you have the install discs, try booting from them, holding down the c key and then using Disk Utility to check the drive.
You can also boot into Safe mode
To start up into Safe Mode (to "Safe Boot"), do this:
       1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
       2. Press the power button.
       3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
       4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.
    Please post back with results,
To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

  • I updated my iMac to 10.7.3 and about an hour later the screen began to flicker with a gray line on the upper side, and it also flicker green and red small pixel lines all over the screen, mainly green.

I updated my iMac to 10.7.3 and about an hour later the screen began to flicker with a gray line on the upper side, and it also flicker green and red small pixel lines all over the screen, mainly green. The computer froze with these pixels, so I shut it off and restarted it, and there were this green lines everywere. So I turned it off, and the next day I turned it on and it began to work just fine, but suddenly the same thing happened again, and when I restart the computer again there are these green and some red pixels everywere.
I've read 10.7.3 is giving people many problems, but I never saw that it gave one like this. How can I fix this, or what will Apple do to fix this problem they caused me with their update.
    Thanks

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • Hi, my Macbook Pro just shut down for no reason. Before, there were black lines all over the screen. Then it shut down and it started to make beeps (3). What can I do?!

I was using my computer just as usual, I was on Microsoft Words and doing lectures on the Internet. Then, out of nowhere, the screen froze and black lines appeared all over the screen and the computer shut down. The screen was all black, but I think it was still open because my laptop was doing sounds, three beeps. When it beeps, the little light that shows you when your laptop is open is bright, so the beeps and the light are synchronized. AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, help me!!!

There is a hardware problem. Possibly bad RAM. Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

My friend tells me my answers to her emails go all over the place on the email and she cannot read them. What can I do to prevent that from happening?

You might try going to edit on the top line. In the drop down window you will find "attachments". click on that and in that drop down window click on "always send windows friendly attachments" This solve a similar problem for me.
