Link Event to new source file/move an Event in iMovie 11?

Hi. I would like to change the location where iMovie looks for a certain Event.
Originally, the Project was located on an external hard drive. It wouldn't open, so I copied it over to my internal hard drive on my computer. I also copied the related Event folder from the external hard drive and put it inside my iMovie Events folder on my computer.
Now the Project opens. It looks for the Event on the external hard drive, and loads it up.
For various reasons (see below), I would like to tell iMovie, "Hey, look for this Event here on my computer, instead of the external hard drive." Can this be done?
I cannot, incidentally, go into iMovie and export anything (see below), so if that is the solution, it isn't going to work for me.
I'm on iMovie '11 9.0.4.
I'm running OS X 10.6.8 / Snow Leopard
  Model Name:          iMac
  Model Identifier:          iMac9,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
  Processor Speed:          2.66 GHz

  Total Number Of Cores:          2
  L2 Cache:          6 MB
  Memory:          8 GB

[I have a much bigger problem that is ridiculous, but I'm desperately trying to do this just in case it might help. The bigger problem has been asked about in many places on Apple support community, on blogs, and around the Internet, but is basically a terrible bug that isn't solvable for many people, while others try all kinds of bizarre tricks to attempt to get it to work (some succeed). It involves iMovie saying it doesn't have enough memory to export/share your project, even if you have loads of RAM and available hard drive space.]

I don't know of a way to do it other than the way you are doing it with Reveal In Finder.

  • New source file location

I finally put the time in and set up a new 1TB hard drive = D:   It will be used for all date with all OS/programs on C:
Question: I still have all my picture and video folders on C: and have copied them onto D: What is the best way to let Organizer know that D: is the new source HDD? I plan on deleting the folders on C: after completing this so I don't want to make a mistake.
    Thanks, Stan

Thanks John, yes I do still have them all on C:. What you suggest makes sense, I just wanted to make sure before I did anything this time. I also have all my files backed up via Carbonite (.mov's manually indicated).
If anyone has any other specific recommendations, it's appreciated.
I'm curious to know why I just can't "reconnect" Organizer to my existing images/videos on D: now.

  • Premiere won't accept new source files in slightly different formats...

I'm using CS3 (and I installed CS4 and got the same problem).  I've created a video using six different source videos that were originally encoded in XVID.  I now know that was a bad idea but at the time I didn't know how to convert the video so I went ahead and used them.  Now my project crashes to the desktop whenever I open it without any sort of error message.
This is a project that I started over a year ago and I set it aside because I didn't want to deal with the issue, but I really want to finish this project.  Now I have a better handle on what sort of codecs work well with premiere and I use Super C to convert the videos to a friendly format and I haven't had any problems with my projects crashing since then.
So now I've revisted the project that is crashing and I have tried converting the original source videos to a more friendly format, but hte problem is, even when I get it to a format that is pretty much exactly the same settings as the original (size, fps, etc) premiere won't accept it.  When I open the project and it asks me "Where is the file..." I'll point to the new file and premiere tells me "The selected file cannot be linked because its type (video) does not match original file's type (audio and video)".. I try this after opening the project by right clicking on the asset and choosing "link media..." but of course I get the same error message.
What i've gotten done in the project is like 10 hours worth of work and it would be a shame to lose all of it just because Premiere is too picky about switching from one media type to another .. what are my options in getting this to work?

    Welcome to the forum.
Yes, Xvid is a delivery-only format for delivery-only, but you know that too.
What I would do would be to Open that original Project, and then Offline the original Video. If you named the converted files the same, except for the extension, you should be able to then Import the replacement files and manually replace those. Make sure that when you choose to Offline the Assets, that you do a Save_As, so that the original Project is NOT overwritten - keep it safe.
You might try to Relink from the Project Panel, before you do the Import. I do not know if that will be allowed, due to the extension difference, but that would be the easiest way, if it works. Try that first. With the material Offline, Rt-click on each AV file, and choose Link Media. If you used the same file names, you should be able to find the converted versions. Let us know if this works, or if you get rejected.
    Good luck,

  • InDesign links stripped out when relinking to new InCopy file

I am working on a large manual in InDesign CS4.  Previously, there was an .incd file linked within the links panel.  When I open the .indd file, the box comes up to update the links.  We now have a new .icml file from InCopy that I relink to.  What is happening is all the links in the link panel as well as within the document are getting stripped out when I link to the new InCopy file.  The only file left is the .icml in the links panel.
Has anyone had this happen to them?  If so, I would love to know how you fixed it.  Or if anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks.

    Hi,Thanks for writing.
I am relinking from an older story to a new one. When the editor upgraded to InCopy CS4 and told me he had completed his updates, within the folder were both the old .incd files as well as the new .icml.  I removed the old .incd then opened the InDesign file.  When I go to relink by right clicking on the old InCopy file, the new .icml file replaces everything within the links panel within InDesign as well as stripping all linked graphics from the pages.

  • HELP! Reformatted drive with Video source files

I accidentally reformatted my external drive that contained the source files for all of my iMovie '09 projects/library. I am currently using Data Rescue II to attempt recover. Fortunately (I hope), all of the project files are on my internal drive.
In case the data recovery doesn't work, does anyone know if I will be able to reimport the video and have the project files recognize the new sources?
Please don't tell me I should have backed up. In fact this was the very thing I was trying to do. I simply made the biggest bonehead mistake in reformatting the wrong drive. I am so bummed now. All of my family videos.
I would greatly appreciate any assistance.

I lately made a test, by dragging Events in Finder to a diff. location.. = project kaputt . dragged files back to original location = project fine.
when you look inside a iM-Project file with the plist-Editor (part of the DevTools), you'll notice as item 62 a 'link', e.g. "~/Movies/iMovie Events.localized/HF100 Import/clip-2008-05-23 23;06;51 1.mov" .. which reads in Human English:
my import is in the iM-Events folder, named 'HF100 Import', followed by the naming scheme, iM uses automatically..
=> in your case, if you re-import, you HAVE to use the exactly same Event names as before! .. in theory, your re-imports of video could work..
How many Projects/Events are we talking about.. ?

    you should have backed-up ..

  • Source files gone Offline but still exist - Can't export sequence!

    Hi folks,
I'm hoping someone can help me out of a predicament, please.
I began a brief project a year or so back in FCP 3x for a friend to send to her kids. Since then it lay fallow until she brought me some new footage to add, but still have the Scratch disk intact as it was and the FCP Project files library with it. In the interim I'd upgraded the FCP Studio 3 and opened up the project in FCP 7. Strangely, some of the clips in the bin were listed as offline. I couldn't discern any pattern or reason why some clips were still linked with their raw source files and some not. In any case, I finished editing the short sequence in the timeline and went to export it to QT. I should have realized that, predictably, the exported sequence included only those segments that were not offline. I checked again and all the source clips from the camera exist, but was unable to reconnect them to the clips that access them.
For instance, the source file might be named, 100_2347.MOV, while named in the bin, ELS - Windshield Before JLM.
I'm notified that 20 of the clips are offline, but any attempt to reconnect fails. I'm not as savvy in FCP as I probably should be, otherwise this would not have happened, or I could reconstruct the actions that got me there, but I was fairly proficient on a Moviola and fluent on a Steenbeck about a 100 years ago, though.
What can I do at this point? Is there any way to force a reconnect? Manually? Will I have to start a new project re-import the clips and recut the thing? I hope I won't have to edit the thing from scratch at this point. What am I forgetting (Doh)? Thanks in advance for any help on this.
    All the best,
    David

Control-click on an offline clip in your FCP Browser, and choose Reconnect Clip from the drop down menu. In the top box of the pane that opens, you should see the clip listed as offline, and the directory where FCP was expecting to find the clip.
Is FCP expecting to find the clip on a drive that you no longer have connected, or have renamed?
What happens when you press the locate button?
Don't worry that you have renamed the clip in the browser to something other than than the source file name. FCP will keep track of that.

  • Netbeans packages as source files

    Hi,
I noticed that the Composer in NetBeans 6.9 creates (copies) new sources files in the project when some special components are used (like DataSource).
For example if a JDBC data source component is added, several files .fx are added in the project under the package "org.netbeans.javafx.datasrc".
Even if source files are instructive and interesting, I was expecting to have a dedicated components library and not sources file to be compiled.
They just increase compilation time and final jar dimension (compared to a library released with the JVM).
Can someone explain me the benefits of this choice ?
    Grazie,
    Gualtiero

    You wrote:
    c:\jarfiles> jar cfm jarfilename.jar c:\com\packages\
import com.packages.classfilename;What do you notice? The "root" of your JAR is at class level, you forgot to include the directory structure com/packages. So these class files can never be found.
Move your classes to c:\anemptydir\com\packages\ and run
    jar cfm jarfilename.jar c:\anemptydir
(Be aware that the m option also requires you to name a manifest file.)
    Now gimme some dukes.

  • Current source files lost in OS upgrade

    Can this happen?
I have recently upgraded to OSX 10.6.8 and  now find that when I open iWeb app it is showing source files from a year ago.  The version is iWeb 3.04.  Cannot remember if that was the version before upgrade. All very confusing.
Any help would be really appreciated.

You can try these two troubleshooting routines but it's a long shot:
1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iWeb's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
3 - launch iWeb and try again.
If that doesn't help continue with:
move the domain file from your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
launch iWeb, create a new test site, save the new domain file and close iWeb.
go to the your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
    launch iWeb and try again.

  • IMovie 'File Move to library' not working

Greetings all. I'm trying to help a friend move iMovie events from one iMovie library stored on his internal drive to a second iMovie library stored on an external hdd.  We started just dragging events from one library to the other, and that worked for most things. We are stuck with a couple big events -- one roughly 30GB and one roughly 60GB in size. When we attempt to manually drag them, they don't move, just pop back.  There is lots of space on the external drive, it's a brand new ThunderBolt 1TB LaCie Rugged clean-formatted via Disk Utility.
I've tried highlighting an offending event and going to File > Move to library, and it shows the destination library blackened and able to choose, but chosing it does nothing.
I've tried going in the back door inside iMovie Library > show package contents, taking the offending event out of the internal drive iMovie library and placing it in the package contents of the external iMovie Library, but iMovie didn't see the contents of the moved event (though it did recognize there was a new event). I put it back and it shows again.
I have been looking for a "rebuild iMovie library" as there is for iPhoto, but haven't found one.
I wonder if there is a temp file that I can delete inside the iMovie Library on the external drive that, once it's deleted and newly rebuilt by iMovie, it would see an event that i put in via the back door.? is the file "CurrentVersion.flexolibrary" that file?
Anyone have any tricks to share? Thanks!

"Won't add to library and doesn't give an error message" is usually a sign of minor corruption in the MP3 file. Treat it with a 3rd party tag cleanup program such as MP3val, and then it should be able to be added to your iTunes library.

  • Xcode not saving source files

    Hi
Has anyone else come across an issue where Xcode doesn't save source files before a build - despite setting the For Unsaved Files preference correctly?
My Java students are using Xcode 3.1.1 to create and build Java Tool projects. We've noticed that we can't modify the default source file for a newly created project, nor can we modify any new source files we add to the project UNLESS we close down and restart Xcode after adding each new file. Specifically, any edits are stored in the file buffers but these are not automatically saved to the hard disc when we trigger a build. However, once Xcode is closed and restarted, all source files in the project behave normally.
Interestingly, the problem doesn't seem to happen with Tool type projects in other languages, however, these projects by default put the source files in the top level of the project folder, whereas all Java projects put the source files one level down in a "src" sub-folder.
Has anyone else noticed these issues with Java projects? Do similar problems occur in other languages if source files are stored in sub-folders? Remember, the problem only exists for newly created files and it's resolved once Xcode is shut down and restarted - unless, of course, we need to add more files.
Anyone got any workarounds which avoid stopping and restarting Xcode?
    Bob
PS: Please don't post comments saying that I should use Eclipse, Netbeans, BlueJ, etc That's not relevant to this discussion.

Thanks briyu. At least you've confirmed that I'm not going mad
As for 3.1.0, that's what the student machines are using and we have the problem there. I wonder why no one else has reported this before? Probably Xcode isn't used very much for Java.

  • Xcelsius messes up links when importing Excel source document

I am creating a dashboard using an Excel doc as my master source.  Because the dashboard data is all over my network, I have a master excel doc that has cell values that are links to cells in three other excel spreadsheets on my network.  When I import the spreadsheet into Xcelsius, it says the links are wrong.  I click the "Change Source" button and notice the links point to my hard drive (c:\agency\agency production\2008 production.xls) instead of the where the link should be (o:\agency\agency production\2008 production.xls).  The master excel spreadsheet has all the links correctly going to our network drives.
I've tried recreating the master spreadsheet
    breaking the links and recreating
Using FQDN names for the links instead of drive letters
I always get the same error.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi Chris,
I'm actually trying to get one master excel spreadsheet to link to several smaller source files. I've created all the references to the E:\ drive on our server, but when I import the model in Xcelsius the charts are all blank. This leads me to believe that Xcelsius can't work with linked excel spreadsheets. Were you ever able to get this to work?
    Thanks!

using sharepoint designer 2013 - connected to sharepoint online - but getting " data source file cannot be saved" after making a new linked datasource

    Hi,
Based on your description, I have done a test and I can’t reproduce your issue.
I have used SharePoint Designer 2013 to open a SharePoint Online site and there are no issues.
I’d like to clarify whether you encounter any issues when accessing SharePoint Online sites. If there are no issues during the accessing procedure, SharePoint Online service should be working fine at your side. The issue may be caused by specific SharePoint
Designer client or network. I suggest you refer to the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.
    1. Use SharePoint Designer to open another site and check whether it is successful.
    2. When you are prompted to enter Office 365 account and password, try other users’ accounts and select the remembering the credential.
    3. Perform the connection procedure under another environment and verify whether the issue is resolved.
If the issue persists, can you provide related screenshots for further troubleshooting?

  • In making a "highlights" movie, using clips from different imported iMovie events, can I delete the larger iMovie event file from the Events browser and still work w the smaller clips in the Projects browser w/o having the larger files still loaded?

I have sucessfully imported 150 Sony digital 8mm movies (each one hour in length) into iMovie as 150 iMovie events. I have since successfully converted them from their original 13 Gb (.dv) file to an exported smaller 1.3 Gb (.4mv "large file") movie that I am happy with, using the iMovie projects browser. So now I have 150 " .4mv" movies on my internal HD as well as about half of my original raw data " .dv " movies on my internal hard drive.
Due to their large size (over 2 Tb), I do not have all the larger raw data (.dv) files on my 2Tb internal drive, just about half of them. What I want to do now is to create a new project in the Projects browser for each of my kids, and reload, starting with Tape #1, each of these larger files and do a highlights movie for each of my kids, wherein I pick out smaller clips from each 1 hour .dv iMovie event and paste them into the appropriate kid's Highlights project in the Projects browser.
Here's my question: If I load the first 5 large files back onto my internal HD, and paste in various shorter clips into each of my kids' Highlights project, and then if I delete those first 5 large files (they are backed up on 2 other 3Tb external HDs), can I keep doing this (reloading the next 5 large .dv files to work with), and ultimately take each of my kid's Highlights project and export as a .4mv movie EVEN THOUGH the earlier large .dv files are no longer on my internal HD, OR does my iMac need to have all these larger files loaded on my internal HD for me to eventually export each of my kid's Highlights project to a .4mv movie?
I have a 2011 era 27" iMac desktop w 2Tb HD internal and 250 Gb flash drive, and Lion OSX and iMovie 11.

Thanks. I tested it out and you were correct. I loaded 2 .dv movies from my external HD back onto my internal HD, and got them re-imported into iMovie, took a few short clips from each of the 2 iMovie events and pasted them into a new project in the Project Browser. Then I deleted these 2  "source clips" from my internal HD, closed iMovie and then re-opened it and found that iMovie would NOT export the smaller clips for a "highlights" .4mv movie without the "source clips" being available.
I read your link on Quicktime. It talks about mostly trimming, which is what I did with each iMovie event before I took each one as a project to export as a smaller .4mv file. But if I use Quicktime (do I need QT Pro or basic), what advantage is it to me to use QT over iMovie (I must admit I am a novice at iMovie and have never used QT or QT Pro as a tool)? Will it then convert any edits I make to a .m4v movie or do I need iMovie to do that?
Does QT allow trimming multiple segments out of a movie during one edit session, or can you only do 1 at a time? By that I mean that, for example, when I use Sonys Picture Motion Browser for my .mts movies, you can only set one Start and one End point for each edit/trim you do: it does not allow you to set multiple Start Stop points like iMovie allows in its Event or Project browser. You can only do one "trim" at a time, save it and then reopen to do another trim. not very useful.

  • The 'Correct way' to move source files

So chalk me up as another person having issues with relinking files that have been moved in the finder.  I don't understand how this can be such an issue but FCPX just won't relink them.
Anyway amongst all the threads of others having this issue there is no clear remedy if you have already done it but several people have commented ' you should have used FCPX to move the files.  '
How do you do this ?  Since thered is no file tree in FCPX how on earth do you use it to move the files ?  The only structural tree there is is for the events and the way I have been working, my events are all saved on one drive but they don't contain the source files, only references to them.  So dargging and dropping the events onto another drive wouldn't be the solution.
    Any help much appreciated.....

OK, so then I don't know what you're trying to do.
When I import, I do not have the check box set to move the files to the project folder.  Therefore the files reside on an external drive and in the 'originals' folder, FCPX just puts a reference (an alias ).
What I want to do, is move the location of those files on the external drive, call it drive A, which is now full, to drve B, a new drive.
That's the bit that seems like a really common necessity to me.
But doing this obviously breaks the references and trying to re-link them it tells me the framerates are wrong.  Which is incorrect, because how could simply dragging a file from one drive to another change the framerate ?
That can happen. It depednds on how you moved the files and where you moved thme to. If you moved the refrerneced files at the finder level and are trying to relink them you try to do this at the finder level.
Yes I moved them at the finder level, what other ways are there to do it ?  That's the exact question I'm asking, is there another way I should have done it.
How do you re-link at finder level ? Is that what you are suggesting ?
That's correct. That's common in most database driven applications.
That would be fine, but then why offer you the option to leave the files in their original location when importing ?  That's where this all starts to go south because that's the one loophole to get out of their organizational methods.  If they had forced me from the beginning to conform to their method entirely then I wouldn't be in this mess.  It seems like they haven't condisered the ramifications of that option.

  • Having iMovie Locate Projects, Movies, Events on New Mac

I just bought a new MacBook Pro running OS 10.9.1. I'm using iMovie 10.0.2.
I used Finder and copied my old Movies directory, which contains iMovie Events, iMovie Original Movies, and IMovie Projects directories to a backup drive and then copied it on to my new machine.  I can see all the files in Finder.
When I open iMovie, it's not finding these files, since I assume it's not looking in the right place. How do I get iMovie to look in the place where the files are, or where do I copy the files to so iMovie will find them?
    Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the suggestion. You have identified the problem: The Movies folder is in a folder called Documents which is in the <user> root.
However, the system won't let me move it. I get a message saying "Movies" is required by OSX and can't be altered.
I do have a folder Movies in the root, which contains Imovie Library and iMovie Theatre
I also tried the suggestion in the link to Update Projects and Events, but it says it can't find any.
Can you tell me how to move what I need to or do you have any other ideas?
    Thanks again.
