In the iphoto preferences uncheck the box at Advanced -> Copy files to iPhoto Library Folder when Adding to Library.
Now whn you import the photos to the Library (File -> Import to Library) they originals will not be moved.

  • How do I store my photos in an ext hdd and link them to iphoto library?

Is it possible to store all the photos on an ext hdd and access them via iphoto?
Currently, my photos are stored locally in my Macbook's hdd. I would prefer the files to be stored on an ext hdd.
I also encountered another problem, I organise all my photos via event dates. However, when I check the file location on my hdd, some are stored in 2008 folder even though the date of photo taken and sync are done this year. This only happen to some of the photos and not all.

Are you running a managed library (the "copy items to the iPhoto library" preference is checked - the default setting) or a referenced library (that preference has been unchecked?
IF you are running the default managed library then simply quit iPhoto, drag the iPhoto library from the pictures folder on your internal drive to your EHD and launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key and use the select library option to tell iPhoto where the iPhoto library is now located
If you have changed to a referenced library it may be very difficult to change the location of your photos

It is advised that you do not enter the iPhoto library via the finder - if you make any changed to the content or structure of the iPhoto library using any program except iPhoto you may corrupt your library and lose data - there is no reason to be inside the iPhoto library - you should always access your photos using iPhoto

  • HT4236 I've run out of room on my hard drive. I bought an external drive and exported all my albums to the external drive then deleted the albums from iPhoto. I want to sync both from my ext drive and new albums in iPhoto. No dice. Help!

I've run out of room on my hard drive. I bought an external drive and exported all my albums to the external drive then deleted the albums from iPhoto. I want to sync both from my ext drive and new albums in iPhoto. My photos on the devices get wiped out when I sync to iPhoto since I deleted all the albums. But when I sync to my hard drive (where I maintained the album structure) the photos are copied to my iPad but lose all the hierarchy and folder structure. Now I have to scroll through thousands of photos to try to find the one I'm looking for. Before I sync any more devices I want to know the following: 1) can I restore the album structure on my iPad by using the photo cache? 2) is there a way to sync both new iPhoto albums AND pictures in the folders in my hard drive? And 3) how can I keep the photo hierarchy structure from my hard drive intact on my devices?

    Don't do that.
Copy /Photos/Photo library/ to the external.
    Hold Option and launch iPhoto.
Select Choose library and select the Photo library you copied to the external.

  • When I create an album in iphoto am I duplicating pictures or just creating links?

When I create an album in iphoto am I duplicating pictures or just creating links?  My iphoto is slow and I'm wondering if I am bogging it down. Thanks.

How many Photos? How much Ram? What Mac? How muc free space on the Disk? And, how slow is "slow to start up"?
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • Broken links with new EXT HDD

My Aperture library sits on a networked EXT HDD called Pictures HD. I decided the drive was getting a little old so swapped it for a new one. I've copied the entire contents over to the new drive, given it exactly the same name (Pictures HD) but when I open Aperture, all my referenced files are showing up as disconnected. I can't see why this should be as the new drive is basically a clone of the old one.
Any ideas what I need to be doing differently?

If you have already, outside of Aperture, copied all of your referenced files to the new HD (and kept your Library on your system HD), don't use "Relocate Masters". That would have been a better way to populate your new HD -- but that is already done. Use "Locate Referenced Files". This command allows you to tell Aperture to, in fact, locate the Masters of the images in the Library. If you copied without alteration the folder structure of the referenced files, you will be able to simply tell Aperture where one of the Masters is on your new HD, and Aperture will find all the others.
Alternatively, you could wipe the new drive clean with a fresh format, then use the "Relocate Masters" command with both the old and the new HDs mounted.
In general, it is recommended that other than back-up you do all file management from within Aperture. Both "Relocate Masters" and "Locate Referenced Files" work well.

I am trying to copy 3 photos from an album in iPhoto to my iPhone. I have tried to move them to PhotoStream. I "select" the photos in the Album and then click on PhotoStream in the "Share" menu at the bottom of the screen. Nothing happens.  I have also tried emailing them tyo myself but iPhoto won't send the email. It tells me it doesn't recognize my ID and password. My operating is Lion on an iMac.

Thank you for responding to my question, above, this morning. And thank you for the link about PhotoStream. It was helpful in understanding how Photostream works, but, unfortunately, doesn't really reference my problem since it assumes that the photos were originated on one of my  Apple devices. The photos I want to copy to my iPhone are in an album on iPhoto but I had originally downloaded them from my camera to my iMac then moved them to the album. The confusing thing for me is that they are 3 of a dozen photos takern over a period of 12 years on different digital cameras (two were taken on film and later scanned and eventually moved to the album in iPhoto) and all but three of the photos moved to photostream and are on my iPhone. It is those three, which were all taken on digital cameras and moved to the album, which I can't get to move to Photostream.

  • How do I split my albums in iPhoto, so not albums to bee seen, only 1?

How do I split, or seperate, my albums in iPhoto, so not all albums can be seen at once?? This, if I send the link to someone, about +one specific album+.
Some albums are for other eyes only.......
Now, it seems, that everybody can see ALL the albums, after they have received the link for just 1 album.....
    Help!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If you're referring to MobileMe albums created from iPhoto bring up the Info window while viewing the gallery and click on the Change Settings button.
Next check the Hide album on my gallery page checkbox and set the Album Viewable by: to Everyone. Now you can send the URL for the gallery to visitors and when they go to the gallery they will not see the other albums.
This will give you a galley like this one: Space Station Photos. It's isolated from the other albums in my gallery.

  • Albums in Aperture vs Albums in iPhoto

    Hi,
I am a bit confusing about the usage of Albums in iPhoto and Aperture 3.
    My understanding,
iPhoto: adding a picture to albums is just to create links, there is always one physical copy of image, modifying the picture from an album will update all albums that have that picture. The concept of Album in iPhoto is more like a tag or a label?
Aperture: adding a picture to albums is to copy physical image files, you may have duplicated images if a picture is added to several Albums. Change of a picture in an album will not update the same picture in other albums.
    Is my understanding correct?
Since my iPhoto and Aperture use same the iPhoto library, how do they actually work together when browsing albums? iPhoto creates links but Aperture copies files.

versions do not mean duplications of images, versions mean changes-to-be-applied?
That is correct.  Versions are image files in limbo - just a set of adjustments describing the changes that need to be applied to the original to render the image as an image file. You create new versions by using the command "Photos > Duplicate version" or "Photos > New version from original". Or by setting the preference to create new versions when making adjustments.
This paragraph in the manual is very misleading:
When you drag an image into a different album, Aperture creates a duplicate version of the image and places it in the album. An image can be copied into any album in the same project or into albums in different projects. The destination album can be an album, book album, Light Table album, slideshow, or web journal or webpage album.
Dragging between albums does not create new versions - it adds a link to the same version to the destination album. You can test that, by dragging an image to an album and flagging it in the album. You will see that all occurences of this version in all albums will be flagged. SO there is still only one version after dragging, but used in different albums.

  • Problem linking to MobileMe album created in Aperture

I use multiple computers and I'm trying to sort out synchronising photo albums between them.
On my main iMac I use Aperture and have created and published a number of photo albums to the gallery. I can view the albums from any machine via the Safari web browser and can download individual photographs.
On my Macbook or any of the other machines, when I try to subscribe to an album using the "subscribe in iPhoto" option, iPhoto starts up, tries to link and comes back with a message 'There are no photos in the subscription “MobileMe Atom Feed.”'
I can set up a subscription in iPhoto by accessing MobileMe and copying the URL, but this doesn't allow me to add photographs to the album from within iPhoto.
Any suggestions of what I might be doing wrong or how to resolve this situation. Incidentally, I'm using iPhoto '09 on both of the machines I am trying to get to set up a subscription to an album on.
    Thanks, Brian

Glenn: Thanks for the reply. I've gone back through and examined things again and here is what is happening, although I can't explain why it's happening.
You are correct about the differences in the URL formats for Mobile Me. However, it is not possible while on the http://www.me.com/gallery to send an invite to a friend to subscribe to your gallery. That ability is not there. You must click on the other link in the upper right corner that takes you to the actual gallery with the URL format http://gallery.me.com. Once you are at that location, then and only then is the button available called "Tell A Friend".
True. I only mention the other link because there is, within iPhoto itself, a "Subscribe to Photo Feed..." option under the File menu. here you manually type or paste the URL pointing to the gallery you wish to subscribe to. If you pasted the incorrect gallery link, you will get the same failure you reported earlier.
I wonder if using that option on your end would succeed or not, Try it and let us know.
So, while on the http://gallery.me.com website gallery, I can click on the "Tell A Friend" button and send an invitation to someone to view the gallery. The e-mail that it creates contains the correct link format. I then send this e-mail to myself (using a different e-mail address) and upon receiving the mail click on the link provided and it takes me to the correct URL web page gallery where I can view the photos and now there's an option at the top called "Subscribe". When I click on this button it asks if I want to subscribe via an RSS reader or to iPhoto. I select iPhoto and iPhoto then opens automatically and then asks me if I wish to subscribe to the gallery. I click "yes" and an error message pops up that says there are no photos published (even though I'm looking right at them). All of the links are correct in that they are pointing to the http://gallery.me.com/username/galleryname address. But it still does not work.
The only way I can get it to work is to go into Aperture - click on the mobile me gallery that I have published and then click on the button at the bottom of the page that says "Tell A Friend". Once again it generates an e-mail with an invitation to view the gallery. I send that e-mail to my other address and when I receive it I click on the link, it takes me to the correct URL web gallery where I can see the photos just as before. When I click on the "subscribe" button at the top, iPhoto launches - asks me if I wish to subscribe - I click "yes" - and the photos begin downloading into iPhoto with no problem.
So - to sum up. If I send an invite to a friend to view and subscribe to an album from the actuall gallery web page it does not work. If I send the invite from Aperture (which is where the gallery was published from) then the subscription process works. In both instances the URLs that are being referenced are the correct http://gallery.me.com web site.
Nothing has changed at my end and I'm pretty sure there is a bug here on the Mobile Me website that is generating this problem. I've seen this same problem now on my wife's computer and on my parent's computers - so it's not just an isolated issue on my computer.
Nice summary of the issue. I have to admit, all methods of subscribing to a Photo Feed are working on my end. If you don't mind, you can send me an invite to one of these troublesome galleries, and I'll see if I can subscribe to it on my end (Check my profile in the upper right of this page for mt email address).
I guess I should report it to Apple. The only problem with that is you never hear back from them. Thanks for the suggestions anyway and let me know if you have any other ideas.
True. However, it is possible to signup for a free Apple Developer Account here:
    http://developer.apple.com/products/mac/program/
You don;t actually need to be a develper, but you will be able to submit Bug Reports that get assigned a case number and the engineers respond and even may ask for further information. I've done it myself.

  • When I share an album from iPhoto on iCloud and invite friends, can those with a pc view them?

When I share an album from iPhoto on iCloud and invite friends, can those with a pc view them?

That depends, see this link:   iCloud: iCloud Photo Sharing FAQ
iCloud Photo Sharing adds new features to shared photo streams, including the ability to share videos and allow subscribers to contribute to your shared streams. These new features work with the following devices and software:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iOS 7
Mac using OS X Mavericks v10.9 or later and either iPhoto 9.5 or Aperture 3.5
Apple TV with Apple TV software 6.0 or later
Windows PC using Windows 7 or later and iCloud Control Panel 3.1 or later
If you're using earlier versions of iOS, iCloud Control Panel, iPhoto, or Aperture, you can still create and view shared photo streams. Learn more.
If all fails, you can publish the shared photo stream as a webpage and mail  the links to your friends with a PC.
Can I share with people who don't use iCloud?
Yes. If you enable Public Website in the settings for your shared stream, your photos will be published to a website that anyone can view in an up-to-date web browser. Learn more about inviting people to view your shared photo streams.

  • New album in iPhoto is not a clean slate...

When i create a new album in iPhoto it´s filled with old pictures automatically.  How do I get this to not happen?  How do I create new albums with no content?
Also, when i remove files in these albums, the orginial photo also seems to disappear. I want it to be like a playlist in iTunes, where nothing happens to the original when you remove the playlist or stuff in it.

Actually no - check the link I supplied
    Create new (empty) album
    Shift-Command-N
    Create new album from selection
    Command-N
    Create new Smart Album
    Option-Command-N
Command N creates a new album from the current selection (like the File menu ==> new album does)  - Shift-command-N creates a new empty album - Option-Command-N creates a new smart album

  • Problem with Time Machine or ext HDD?

I am using a Western Digital Firewire800 ext HDD for my Time Machine back ups. In the past the ext HDD will turn on by itself when my iMac is turned on and the light remains on. Of late I notice sometimes the light turns off and the ext HDD icon on the desktop disappears. I would need to press the power button on the HDD for the light to come back on and the desktop icon to re-appear.
More importantly, in the past Time Machine will auto back up every one hour. It no longer does that. I made an effort to pay close attention yesterday. TM said that the next back up was scheduled for 2.54pm. When it was 2.54pm, even though the ext HDD light was on & the desktop icon was there, TM did not to an auto backup. And the wierd thing is, when I went into TM properties, it now said that the next back up was scheduled for 3.54pm as though it had already done a back up at 2.54pm.
I had to do a manual backup. Do you think something is wrong with my ext HDD or with TM? I still have ample space in my ext HDD btw. Thanks in advance!

It's hard to tell whether it's the drive, the connections, or something in Time Machine.
The 2:54 backup may have been "delayed," due to the drive not being available. See #A1 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for a handy widget that will display the backup messages from your logs.
See if there was a backup attempt at that time; if there's such a message, that's the reason.
If so, check all the connections to be sure they're snug and secure. Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 there. If that doesn't help, try repairing the backups, per #A5 in Troubleshooting.
If still no help, try removing the check from the +Put the hard disk(s) to sleep . . .+ box in +System Preferences > Energy Saver.+ Not all drives respond to that setting, and some WDs have a proprietary "spin down" feature that's near-impossible to remove, but it's worth a try.

  • Add Current Facebook Albums to iPhoto?

Has anyone found a way to download your current facebook albums to iPhoto? I'd like to be able to do this so that I could add new pictures to them and have them sync back up to facebook instead of having to create new ones.

I know this question has been tossed around a few times after looking at the existing threads, but I am wondering if anyone knows of a way to get iPhoto to recognize and sync an existing Facebook album without creating a new album and moving the photos over?
    no
The problem with that is that I lose the initial post on the wall with the album and it also nullifies links I've shared via Twitter to the albums. I've even gone as far as look at possibly modifying the database data, but that seems pretty much impossible to do without corrupting it. I really like the idea of iPhoto syncing and managing Facebook albums, but it seems pretty ridiculous that I can't add existing albums regardless of the quality of the images in them. Anyone agree?
it makes no difference what we users think - iPhoto is what it is - to make suggestions iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback

  • Can only make one album in iphoto. Why?

I make a photo album in iphoto. Give it a name and import photos into it. All works great.
I create a second album, give it a new name and save it. I import photos into it and that works great too.
Except now the first album I made is completely gone. So I make a new album, name it and save it, then import different photos into it. That works great.
Now both the first photo albums I made are gone. What the **** is happening?  Can you only have one photo album period in ipad iphoto?
    That really *****!

Not sure what the problem is. Maybe use the Photo app instead.
