Link Images to a Design File

We are currently looking for a way to link images to a design file within programs like InDesign and Illustrator using an HTML link instead of a local file.  We are hosting our images in SharePoint and need the design file to retain it's links, no matter who on our network opens the design file.

InDesign doesn't do that (yet).

  • Automatically change linked images path in AI files when server has changed?

A customer of ours have replaced their server and now all AI files containing linked to images are broken as they point to the old server. I have opened an AI file and there I can see the paths to the old server, but of course I cannot just edit the path and then save the file because then it won't open in Illustrator CS3 anymore. Is there any way other than to manually go through all AI files and manually replacing the links with the new links to the old server, or to use embedded images?

    Jasion,
Maybe a bit beside the question, but it is always recommended here to open/save from/to own hard disk, and to copy from/to networks and removable media. You may be lucky, at least for a while, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
In addition to the (far greater) risk of file corruption, some issues are mentioned here:

  • How do I batch replace 100 different linked images in my AI file and export 100 different named PDFs?

    Hi all!
    This is driving me crazy...
So I have my A4 AI document with a QR code at the bottom (don't ask why I'm using QR codes, client work) and need to replace it and export the A4 poster as a PDF. I need to do this 100 times with 100 different QR codes and save 100 PDFs.
    To summarise I need to,
Open A4 document (that has artwork already).
Drop in QR code A near the bottom.
    Export as PDF A.
    Repeat..
    Open main document.
    Drop in QR code B.
    Export as PDF B.
    And so on x100....
I have a experience with actions in Photoshop but not batch actions or scripts, and obviously need to run it in Illustrator...
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you!

  • Best file format for linked images in AI

Goal:  To keep Illustrator "running" as smoothly as possible with a few hundred linked images?
Question: What file format to use for the linked images ???
I have a few hundred grayscale and CMYK scans that are placed in AI. for a very large museum mural. The scans only have a single layer. They are currently jpegs but Illustrator in coming to a crawl and randomly crashing.
In my everyday work flow I usually link to PSDs
Just wondering what the absolutle best file format is to squeeze every bit of performace out of illustrator with so many linked images.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

Jpegs are compessed in such a way thata a jpeg of a smaller takes a little longer size to open.
You are probably experiencing this on alrge scale so it is more noticeable and making it take longer to link up.
    I would use tiffs anyway.

  • How to generate PDF from file with linked images

    Hi,
did anybody met/solved problem how to create PDF form file, which contains links to another files/images using PDFGenerator? For example from FrameMaker documents which contains linked images; or from CAD files which contains linked components...
The issue is, that the CreatePDF function moves the source file into a temporary folder, and this operations "brokes" the relative links to linked/included files.

  • Linked images are not visible

I created a document with linked images. (png and psd files). Although all pathes and filenames are the same and even when i klick on edit original files i se them in photoshop i do not see them in illustrator. even if they are on top level. any help?

What system? What version of AI? What are your color mode and color profile settings? Could be anything from simply running out of memory to color management issues....

  • Linked images: BitsPerPixel?

    Hello,
My style of work is to place raster 16 bit images in Illustrator and work with typography over them. After I'm done I just export the artwork directly from Illustrator for printing. Now I'm starting to get very concerned about the output quality of my linked images since all exported files from Illustrator (regardless of file type) have 8 bits per pixel. I have 2 questions about this:
    1. Should I continue to export files from illustrator as final files for printing? Or should I place the vector part (done in Illustrator) to Photoshop and save it for printing there? Or is there something else I should know about this BitPerPixel conversion?
    2. Whenever I place a vector image (8 bit and 16 bit) to illustrator, it shows 24 bit in document info -> linked images. Why is this happening?
    Thank you very much,
    Savo Bursac

You're worrying about nothing. No method I know of can actually print 16bit - even the finest inkjet printers with all their nano drops and dithering tricks can't. However, that in itself contains the answer. Ultimately it doesn't matter what bit-depth, for printing it only matters how the color is perceptively transformed, meaning
    a) how fine/ dense the raster is
    b) how pigmented/ saturated/ opaque each ink area or halftone spot is
    c) the reflective and transmissive properties of the printing substrate are figured in
That's what color profiles do and what they are meant for. They may use 16bit or even float values to improve mathematical precision, but ultimately most of the time a single ink channel won't even exhaust the number of levels that could be expressed with 8bit. Since e.g. offset inks have a specific viscosity that prevents them from printing dots smaller than a specific size or below a certain opacity, the printing plate and thus the color profile used to create it would have to obey these physical limitations, limiting the range of possible variations. So in the end, all that matters is having a correct color profile and workflow built around it to be able to control how a high bit-depth image is transformed to a low range color space. Of course there may be potential to improve your output by doing part of this in Photoshop, but it will really depend on teh specifics...
it shows 24 bit in document inf
    3 channels * 8bit per channel = 24bit

  • Illustrator CC 2014 "Exception in file" error with linked images

It appears some images are showing "Exception in file" error dialog boxes.
If I resave the image in Photoshop or link it to a different image the error disappears.
    Happened with:
    - old design files linked to old images
    - image that was dragged from Mac Mail
    - linked to JPG provided from other users
    Does not happen with:
    - images created recently with Photoshop CC or CC 2014
    Here is the error:
Has anyone else seen this and/or found a solution?
This is an error on a new Mac Pro with brand new install of all software. No older versions of cc installed. Just CC 2014.

That's a good idea. Unfortunately, same problem if I move the image to desktop or same folder as file.
If I resave the file (JPG in this case) the error disappears.
I understand this can be the solution, but given this issue had not happened before, it's interesting it is happening with CC 2014.
Attached is the image in question. Note that this is not the only image. It has happened with older design files that were made from older versions of cc or before cc.
I'm not sure if the uploader will recreate the JPG so I'll compress the file and is available here if anyone would like to test.

  • CS3 - Design View not showing externally linked images

In CS3 Design View, externally linked images are not showing
up... i am only getting the place holder.
    To prempt some questions:
1/ Links are correct and complete - apart from the fact that
they show up when previewing in the browser(s) - i have
    crosschecked
2/ There are no spaces in the url
3/ In the 'View' menu, 'Display External Files' is checked
I had this problem before and escargo suggested saving and
rebooting. It worked then but strangely, today, that file is again
showing some of the externally linked images but not all. And on a
new file, created today, none of the externally linked images are
    showing up... :(
I'm sure there's a simple solution to the problem... anyone
have any idea what it could be?
    Thanks and cheers,
    JJ

Nope. Some show - some don't.

  • "File Link" - Images - displaying landscape image as portrait image

I am trying to link a image by using file link button. I have a image of size, width 10' and height 6'. When i link this image in reports, it doesn't come up in these coordinates. It is displaying as 6x6 size image. I have tried to link other images also. Report doesn't display linked images in their actual size, even if i change the size of rectangle in reports for these linked files.
Any idea how to fix this in report?
    Thanks

I have figured it out. In paper layout mode it doesn't display right size. But in paper design mode it is showing full image.

  • InDesign (and other aps) won't allow PS to save file linked image

I frequently get the message "can't save the  file because the file was left open/or it is in use" in Photoshop CS4. I originally posted this in the PS forum, but a moderator told me it should be posted here, because, as he says, "the OTHER application is keeping the file open when it should not be, and the OTHER application is preventing Photoshop from saving to the file".
The situation goes like this: I option-click on an image in ID CS4 to open  it in PS CS4, and after I've edited it and attempt to save it, the above message pops up. However, it doesn't usually happen on the first option-click in ID, but rather after I've gone back to ID where it automatically updates the image, and I option-click on it for the 2nd or 3rd time. In Q7, its even worse—even if I delete the image and save the file, or if I close the related document—I still get the PS message. I have to quit Q7 to resolve the problem.
I work on full color images in the publishing field, with relatively large layered PS files which frequently need to be changed. Going back and forth between ID, Q7 and PS using their respective clicking on the image options expedites the design process. With not being able to save in PS for images linked to page layout applications, I am losing the ability to multitask in this area.
Also, what makes this "bug" so perplexing is that it doesn't always happen. For instance, yesterday while working in a file, I couldn't save ANY image in PS linked to the page layout app without quitting that app first. Later in the day, the problem disappeared, and I didn't have to quit the file. I have no idea what I did that caused it to "fix itself".
Anyone aware of any patch or practical workaround to this?

This message is a reply to the first "Spiers" reply to my post, not the one referring to Windows.
Which widget are you referring to? The mini icons to the right of my forum ID at the top are New, Your Stuff, History and Browse. None of these offer anywhere to go related to my post. They just dump you in another random area of the forums or to your own post or account history.
However, there is to the right, a sidebar that reads: "More Like This" which offers links to posts that DO relate to my problem. But, they DO NOT offer a solution. You, like the moderator in the PS forum, are basically telling me the same thing: Please take your issue somewhere else.
Why can't I get a direct answer, maybe like "Abobe is aware of the problem and is working on a patch" or "as obvious that it appears to be a CS issue, the problem is actually with OS X, etc." Don't give me the bum's rush.

  • Linking image files created in Mac are broken on PC and Vice Versa

    Hello,
A fellow designer and I are sharing Illustrator files in the office but she is on a Mac and I am on a PC. Our linking image files are located in multiple folders on our company server, but whenever we open each other's files, all the links are broken and have to be relinked due to our different operating platforms. This can be very time consuming since the images are in different folders and there are many of them.
Anybody know how to fix this PC/Mac problem without dropping all the linking files into the same folder as the .ai file? I'm not the IT guy so I don't think that rebuilding our server structure is an option either...would cause too much havoc around the office.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Let me ask you something does this sound like a viable way to work?
The way to do it is as you yourself suggest to work locally with all the files in one folder so you cannot break the links and that you know where the art is at all times.
If the IT thinks this is a good way to work then let them create a script to save all linked files to a common live folder for the project so that both computers can find it.
But from what you describe it is just looking for trouble and might be exactly what the IT wants trouble so they can extend their job. In which case ther is  no solution.

  • Linked Images/Files not Updating to Remote Versions

Recently, I've noticed that when I go to upload a new page to our company intranet, any linked images or files do NOT update to the linked versions when they are uploaded --- they are still pointing to the versions on my local drive, so all users see a broken image or are linked to a broken file. I am putting/checking in dependent folders, and the images/files are successfully loaded to the intranet.
I'm able to fix the issue by manually locating the remote versions of the image/file and inserting it into my .html by hand, but obviously I would prefer to be able to do this automatically. This only started happening recently, as I never had trouble automatically updating links. As far as I know, no settings have changed.
This is for CS5. Any ideas? Let me know if there are any relevant settings or info I can provide.

Sounds like you have not created a Site Definition in DW. If you're working within a properly defined local site folder, DW correctly manages paths & assets for you.

  • Delete Image File & Linked Image (CS3)

Is there a way to do the following. I go into a document and delte a thumbnail image which is a linked image. I would like to delete the linked image the same time as I delets the thumbnail from the page. What is the best way to do this? I am ussing CS3
    Thanks
    Rob

Thanks for the comments. Basically I wanted the fastest way to delete an image on page and the linked image at the same time. I have done package before. The only thing I dont like about package is that all files end up in one folder. I have more than 1000 images sorted in some directories. It must be me but CS3 is a real dog performance wise on my quad core pc.
