Link in Webhelp to open sub-TOC tree of a 'Book with Link'

Hi all, hoping I can find a solution for this.
Currently, and as it should, I link to a page in my webhelp, from within my webhelp. i.e front page has a link that refers to another section in the webhelp. The links work fine, these links however are going to the 'book' (I created the TOC books to be books with links) and within these books are other topics.#
Is there a way to make it so that when the user clicks a link that goes to one of these 'books' in the TOC, that the toc tree also drops down.
example (hard to explain)
TOC
Home (contains link that user clicks which goes to Page 1)
Page 1 (book with link)
sub-page1 (remains closed until user opens it by clicking 'Page 1' book)
subpage 2 (remains closed until user opens it by clicking 'Page 1' book)
I would like those sub-pages to be opened when the link is clicked. Can it be done?

For what it's worth, Leon's suggestion is what I too would recommend. When I facilitate a RoboHelp class and am discussing the "Book with link" feature, I typically will suggest that this approach is used.
@Leon - I think this changed with a recent forum upgrade. Annoying, isn't it?
Standard definiton of any upgrade: Uninstall old bugs. Install new ones.

Synchronize Table of Contents Automatically not expanding TOC tree

Users tell me that some years ago context-sensitive help would expand the TOC tree and select the target topic. Current behavior (RH9) is the "book" is selected but not expanded.
Is there some way to get the old behavior back?

Does it mysteriously begin working after you have had it open for a while?
I ask, because the default setting for WebHelp is that the navigational elements are broken into smaller chunks during the generation process. And it's not uncommon for the TOC to fail synchronization early when opening the help but begin working later.
To change that behavior, one needs to enable the speed setting of "Local PC or Intranet" as shown below.

This causes the TOC, Index, Glossary and Search to be contained in larger single files. The trade-off is that it takes longer for the TOC, Index, Glossary and Search to appear, but the TOC synchronization typically then works.

RH11 TOC "book with link" icon

Hello! I have a question about customizing the TOC icons in RH11. I used the Responsive HTML5 Settings GUI to change all the TOC icons... EXCEPT the open book with link. This appears to be pulling a .png from the template resources folder, but there is no way to change it in the output settings within RH11 itself. Can I edit one of the Javascript files get it to pull a custom icon? Or am I stuck with the default icon? (In the image below, it's the third icon down.)

Willam is our resident guru on these matters but pending his confirmation, I think the solution is to locate the image in the template folder and substitute it with what you want, using the same name and backing up the original in case.

Context-sensitive WebHelp topics opening in new tab not window per browser default

hello everyone. i am generating WebHelp using Robohelp 7. the developer i am working with is new to WebHelp but got the idea pretty quick. i generated a map and he set up the help link to call the correct topic from the application.
at first he could not figure out how to display the navigation pane by default. but then we identified Windows > New Window in the Project Set-up pod and when i changed this from One Pane View to Two Pane View and regenerated the nav pane started coming up.
the problem now is that despite my having unchecked the Use Default Browser Settings, WebHelp opens according to whatever is configured in the browser for "new window" links. for example in Firefox if Options > Tabs > Open new windows in a new tab instead is selected, WebHelp opens in a new tab. same deal in IE.
if anyone can tell me how to ensure that WebHelp always opens in a new window when the context-sensitive link is used i would very much appreciate it. i used Robohelp extensively some time ago but it has been a while and some of this stuff is not coming back to me.

Hi there
I'm thinking that if you really want a new window, you will need to resort to some custom JavaScripting. By default, things are probably dependent upon the browser settings.
If you are insistent on having a new window, I might suggest looking at how NetFlix does their popups. They are very pesky and seemingly impossible to turn off!

I keep not being able to open sub menus in my e mails

When I open emails I cannot always open sub menus very hit and miss affair

Try reset iPad
Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home button down together until you see the Apple Logo.
Note: Data will not be affected.

My updated help file only opens the TOC/Index/Search

I have to update an old project that uses WinHelp, so I installed RH X5 on an old XP machine. The original help file always opened in a 2-pane window with the ToC on the left and the default topic on the right. My "updated" help file only opens the ToC/Index/Search screen in a single pane. How do I get the 2-pane window to appear?

If you have iPhoto 9 or later Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

"book with link" to topic in subfolder

Hi folks,
I have a book with a link that links to a subtopic (see structure below). When I click Book1, the 1.1. Book doesn't open and won't open when clicked on. I have a vague memory of there being an issue around this but could not find anything in the forum search.
Anyone have any ideas?

Is there a way to link two FrameMaker 12 books with shared content into the same RoboHelp 11 file?

This one might require some back story.
I'm working at a company with roughly 60 business units that will each be getting their own emergency response procedures (.FM files compiled into a single FrameMaker .book file for their department). I then want to link all of these books to a single RoboHelp so that when it comes time to publish all of these plans into WebHelp menus I can do that with a single batch generate/publish.
My problem is that some of the FM files within the books are shared (maybe two or more departments are at the same location or all of them share the same corporate level plans) so that when I try to link two books with a shared FM file it throws an error.
Is there away to allow multiple copies of a FM file to exist in a single RoboHelp? Or is there a better solution to the task at hand?
Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated as I am still a moderate beginner with Frame and RoboHelp.

P.S. Just to complicate things this will all be done via SharePoint so books and FM files live there, and then the RoboHelp output will be published there.

I think you’re looking at creating a merged RH project – one parent project that subsumes all the linked FM to RH child projects – read up on merged help on Peter’s site (grainge.org)

When you start Messages fro the first time you are asked for an Apple ID
When this is verified and entered it appears in Messages Menu > Preference > Accounts and is Enabled.
The App should have also picked on on those iChat Accounst you had before.
These should be Enabled if they were when you last used iChat.
Exactly which "Accounts" are logged in can be seen in Message Menu > Accounts and will include the iMessage "Account" and Bonjour.
In the Window menu you will see CMD +0 for the Messages window and CMD+1 for the "Buddies" window which is a combined list at this stage.
Go to the Preferences > General Section and Untick the "Collect all accounts into one list".
This will give you separate iChat type Buddy lists.
You can check if that account/Buddy list is set to Invisible or if in the Preferences > Accounts > Security you have settings that will block some people from seeing you as On line.
You are saying Buddies can see you as On Line which implies they are still sending to your AIM based Names (@Mac.com is a valid AIM Screen Name)
I am not sure from your post if you are trying to iMessage their email IDs thinking they are Apple IDs and that they are using Messages as well.
There is no Buddy list for iMessages side
No-one can tell you are "On Line" until they have your details in the "To" spot in Messages with the correct iMessaged contact info (iPhone Number or Apple ID)
Obviously an Apple ID can be an email or look like one.
In some cases they are also valid AIM Screen Names as well.
In the case or the @mac.com name you may have linked this Apple ID to iMessages as well.

Linking to "book with link" topics

Hi Everyone,
In RH10, is it possible to link to a topic that is a "book with link" topic and have the book topic expand in the TOC?
If you link to a normal topic with the "Autosynchronise TOC" option switched on, the destination topic in the TOC is highlighted in grey and the book is expanded like this:
However if I link to the Printing book topic, the book looks like this:
But I'd like it to look like this:
Can this be done?

Cannot open Word File because "there are problems with the contents"

Hi Everyone,
I cannot open Word File because "there are problems with the contents" unspecified error; Location: 2. Please help as I need this doc for work meeting this morning. Nothing special about this doc but links were copied into it??? However I do that all the time. I have never had this happen before. I am on a 2010 machine. I just ran a disk permissions repaired and emptied the trash but still no dice. I had several other word docs up as well when I got up this morning but they are all fine. I do not have Time Capsule turned on (which I need to do but that will be another thread/question).

Ok, I found a way to open this but not sure what happened to begin with and the formatting setup is different now, almost like text editor? Not sure what happened here but hope it doesn't happen again?

RH8 duplicates TOC structure of FM book

Hello all, when I import/link an FM book and select to generate a TOC in the import properties, then RoboHelp duplicates the entire TOC structure! That means, if there are 6 chapters in the FM TOC then there are 12 in the generated TOC in RH. Manually changing the TOC is no solution because after every time I update the import, the structure is duplicated again.
BTW, I also noticed that it is not possible to select the second option in the import properties, to add the TOC at the end of an existing TOC. This option is always greyed out. The the help of Robohelp does not explain either why it is not available.
