Link Light on the Ethernet port ?

Hi,
Is there a link light on the Ethernet port on the MacBook Pro ? It looks pretty dark to me ;-(
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4)

No I have a feeling it's a 2-bit ethernet card, not a gigabit one.
I just opened up the box yesterday. I thought the
world of Apple was going to be better.
I am going to locate an Apple Store next week to see
see what their repair calendar looks like.

  • The ethernet port on the thunderbolt display is not working

The ethernet is working when the cable is connected directly to my mac laptop but when connected the thunderbolt display there is no connection.  Is there some type of set up for the ethernet connection or can this port just be broken?
    Thanks for the help!

Afterthought on an older post: it isn't immediately clear that the Ethernet port on the Thunderbolt Display works through the "Display Ethernet" interface, rather than through the "Thunderbolt Ethernet" interface. The latter was already present in the list of network interfaces in Network Preferences, while the former had to be added via the + button --- at least that was the case when I installed the TB display to work with my 15-inch MacBook Pro Retina this week.
The AppleCare rep didn't know the difference either and agreed with me that it was puzzling that using the Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter on the Thunderbolt port of the display did work, wheras using the Ethernet port directly didn't (even though there were lights flashing on the Ethernet port of that other computer I tried to connect to in Internet Sharing mode). Close reading of the above posts made me go look for that mysterious "Display Ethernet" interface...  thank you Clinton!

  • Airport express and the ethernet port

Since January, I've had my older g/b model of airport express set to "join the network," which is an 802.11n airport extreme connected to my cable modem. Until last week, the ethernet port of the airport express could be used to connect in my DVD player or TV. I could do software updates on the DVD player, and watch youtube on the TV, etc. The connection became slow last week, so I decided to reconfigure the airports. Since then, the ethernet connection to the airport express is no longer recognized.
Please note, although the airport express is not an "n" model, this set-up did work just fine! The DVD or TV was automatically able to display my IP address. The express has a green light, it has no errors in Airport Utility, and AirTunes still works just fine — it's only the ethernet port that has become completely inactive.
    Any thoughts?

Not sure how you managed to do this with an 802.11g AirPort Express unless you had it configured to extend the wireless range of the 802.11n AirPort Extreme in a WDS. As far as I know, the ProxySTA (wireless Ethernet bridge) capability is only available with the 802.11n Express.

  • What is the ethernet port for on airport express?

Can I use the ethernet port to connect an asset (in this case a Sony Blu Ray player) to my wireless network?  I can see my AE on the wireless network and I have a solid green light on the AE.  I have connected the Blu Ray player by ethernet to the AE but my Blu Ray cannot see my network.  Should it be able to?

Finally then, can I use my outdated A 1088 for wireless printing
    Sure
do I still need to use AirPort Utility v5.6
AirPort Utility 5.6 has the same look and layout that has been standardized in AirPort Utiliy for the past 4-5 years. 6.0 looks very different and will take some time for most folks to get used to.
I would suggest that you keep both 5.6 and 6.0 on your Mac and use the version which is most comfortable for you.

  • Can Slingbox solo be plugged into the Ethernet port on airport express to connect to network?

Slim box requires a wired connection to your network unless you purchase their sling link to create a wireless connection through your home electrical outlets.  Can an airport express be used instead?  Would the sling box plug into the Ethernet port on the express or though the USB port.

It may be possible as the 802.11n AirPort Express can be configured to enable its Ethernet port for wired clients in one of two methods: 1) The Express is extending another AirPort, or 2) The Express is configured as a wireless Ethernet bridge.

  • Time Machine's WAN port doesn't light up, but Ethernet port does

    Hi there,
We have a guest sleeping in the spare room where our Time Machine is also located and because of they are a light sleeper we've had to turn off the power at night. I've then noticed that it has become more and more difficult to setup my internet again.
Firstly, when I powered it back up, it began to flash amber and wouldn't recognise the modem plugged into the WAN. My first approach was to turn everything off and then turn them on again. This had worked the first few mornings after having the issue. But this method doesnt seem to fix the problem anymore.
Regardless, I now continue to receive the flashing amber light. For troubleshooting, I tested the internet connection direct to my Laptop and it worked fine, so I know the internet modem isnt the problem. I then plugged the internet into the Time Machine ethernet port and the green light began to work. I can also access the internet by airport through the TC with this connection.
My question is, why is the Time Machine able to detect the internet through the Ethernet Port, but not through the WAP port?
Also, by using this setup going forward, am I be putting myself at risk of any damage to my TC device, or exposing my personal data to the internet?
thanks for any and all suggestions.
    Regards,
    Elise

Is the TIme Capsule in Router mode or Bridge mode.. ??
It makes all the difference in the world.
    How old is this TC?
It might be worth just doing a reset and set it up again.. make sure you use bridge not router if the modem already is running router function, otherwise TC will pop up an error due to the double NAT.

  • Does connecting a TC wirelessly via "join a wireless network" disable the Ethernet ports?

I've been trying to connect my TC wireless to a D-Link router/cable modem provided by Virgin Media. I have successfully enabled the TC to join my wireless network, and can successfully print from my USB printer, and back up my laptop using Time Machine.
However, when I connected my network laser printer to an Ethernet port on the TC, I could not print to it, or even see it on the network. (Naturally, it worked fine connected to the D-Link, or I would not be posting...)
To test my theory, we connected the TC to the D-Link by wire instead. Voila, we can print to the network printer even while it's connected to the TC.
So, can anyone confirm that connecting a TC wirelessly via "join a wireless network" disables the Ethernet ports?
If so, can anyone explain why a £300+ device would do something so daft?
    Cheers,
    Aegrem

So, can anyone confirm that connecting a TC wirelessly via "join a wireless network" disables the Ethernet ports?
When the TC is configured to "join a wireless network", it becomes a wireless client of the network and does not perform any routing functions, so the etherent ports are not enabled in this type of configuration.
IF...you were using an Apple"n" router as your main base station or router, you could configure the TC to "extend a wireless network", providing more wireless coverage and also enablling the ethernet ports. But, the "extend" feature will only work among Apple devices. Or more correctly, we're not aware of any other devices from any other manufacturers that are compatible with this feature.

  • Can I activate the ethernet ports (routing) of Time Capsule "joining" an existing non-Apple wireless network ?

    Hello,
I have a DSL modem that is also a WIFI router as my main WIFI network from room A. In room B, I have a TC wirelessly joining the existing WIFI network (not creating a new one). That works fine, I have one SSID, and I can wirelessly access the TC disks and backup my Mac on my TC.
Now, I would like to connect a wired device (with on WIFI) to the ethernet port of my TC. Unfortunately, the ethernet ports of the TC don't seem to be "activated" as they do not have internet on them.
More precisely, I'd like to connect a GE Cordless Skype Phone Model# 31591 (http://www.gephones.com/products/skype/dect-6-0-expandable-digital-cordless-phon e-with-skypetm.html) that connects to a router via Ethernet. I'm aware that I could simply connect it to the DLS router, but that's not what I want... Is there any way to activate the ethernet ports of the TC while in "join" mode ? Or do I really have to buy a Airport Express to create my main network and then extend it ?!?

Thanks, the reason why I asked again, is because you told me to start another thread with the specifics of the device I want to connect, so I did
Not a big deal, and it is easy to become confused.....but to be clear about this
    Your question.....
is there a way I can connect my Bluray player to the TC ?
    My Answer.....
Please start a new post for that. Tell us the make and model number of the player and whether you plan to connect using wireless or Ethernet.
so I tried to creat the main WIFI network with a first-generation Airport Express M9470LL/A (802.11b/g, no "draft N" or "n" support) and the TC wouldn't extend it either, is it too old/not supported
Unfortunately, the "extend" setup will only work with "n" devices.  The older Express does not have a setting to "Allow this network to be extended", so the Time Capsule cannot pick up the signal.
I'm not sure what else to suggest other than what I already have.  I'm assuming that you do not want to buy another new Airport Express.

  • Can I use the Airport Express to connect to a Linksys Wireless Network and then use the Ethernet port on the Airport for a wired connection to a device for internet access?  Would I be able to then also use that Ethernet pt to a Ntwk Hub for more wired c

Thanks for the help.  Looked but not clear on what I am trying to do as being possible.  Can I use an Airport Express to connect wireless to a Linksys Wireless Router, such that I can then use the Ethernet ports on the Airport to either connected to a PC wired, or even use a hub off the Airport Express to allow multiple wired connections to it?
I am not looking to have the Airport Express extend my wireless network, just connect to it and provide me wired connections in a different location from where my Linksys Route is located.  Would prefer to replace Linksys with all Apple, but just not possible financially yet.  Thanks for the help.

If the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is an 802.11n model, then yes, you can reconfigure it as a wireless Ethernet bridge. In this configuration, the AX would join the wireless network provided by the Linksys router and its Ethernet port would be enabled for either a single wired device or for an Ethernet hub or switch for multiple devices.

  • Is it possible to connect an HP LaserJet P4015n printer to a computer via the ethernet ports?

My usb port on my Laserjet P4015n no longer works and I am unable to connect this printer to my network router because it's in a different room. Is it possible to connect an HP LaserJet P4015n printer to a computer via the ethernet ports? Of so, how would I go about making this connection? Will I need to install ethernet drivers for this to work?
    Thanks,
    Greg

This seems to be a commercial product. For the best chance at finding a solution I would suggest posting in the forum for HP Business Support!
You can find the Commercial Laserjet board here:

  • Can I connect an external hard drive to one of the ethernet port of the airport extreme and access it from my Mac or PC?

Can I connect an external hard drive to one of the ethernet port of the airport extreme and access it from my Mac or PC?

If this hard drive is part of a NAS device, then yes it should be accessable from either a Mac or PC while connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) by Ethernet.

  • Does the ethernet port work when the using airport express in client mode?

I am considering using an airport express to extend my existing wireless network to a room where I can't get a cable to.
I will need to connect a at least 3 devices to the airport express.
    The questions are:
    - is an airport express the right answer to this problem?
    - if so, does the ethernet port work (AE on client mode) as a passthru into the main network?
    - can I plug a hub to it?
    Thanks
    RFSF

    Hi Tesserax,
Really appreciate you taking time to respond.
I stopped by the Apple store this weekend and one of their sales people ( not one of their genius bar people) told me NO to all questions.  I tend to believe more answers from people in this forum but just realize that I have not mentioned one possibly important point:
the main AP to which I will be connecting the airport express is not an Airport Extreme/Express AP.
    Thanks,
    Ricardo.

  • Is there a device I can purchase to enable wifi on my old iMac, like something that plugs into the ethernet port?

Is there a device I can purchase to enable wifi on my old iMac, like something that plugs into the ethernet port?

Yes! There are lots of wifi adapters that will work with OS 9 on old iMacs. You can find a comprehensive list of them here:
    http://lowendmac.com/macdan/md09/mac-os-9-wifi.html
Belkin seems to make a lot of wireless products for OS 9, so that would probably be the name to keep in mind. You can see one of these here:
    http://cache-www.belkin.com/support/dl/belkin_wireless_usb_network_adapter_manua l_os9.pdf
If you're using an iMac G3, I think those are compatible with AirPort cards, so that's an option too. Good luck!

  • Can I use the ethernet port ....

Can I use the ethernet port on the ATV to connect my blue ray p[layer to the internet using the ATV as a wireless card??
    If so how??

I might be next in line on the airport extreme! Right now wireless is working better since the latest upgrade to iTunes, but hardwire is the way to go. Only problem is that ISP connections is in my office and my Home Media is downstairs. I was thinking of setting the Airport Extreme as a repeater in order to access ISP and then used the ports in the back for iTunes and ATV.
