Link master page to paragraph style?

I'd like to have the first page of each chapter have a different master page (particularly no header with page numbers, etc.). I know how to apply a different page style, but I want the style to stay with the first page of each chapter -- even if more text is added and the document gets longer.
Any way to do this?

Peter, I'm not sure what functionality we used in the past -- it's been years now since we stopped using Frame when it was discontinued -- but I didn't have these problems before. Perhaps that's just because the book feature of Frame (chapters in their own files, very easily compiled into a book) was so easy and did just what we needed it to do. Could not get IDs book feature to work well when I tried it. Haven't been back.
I'll also try out the idea you have. Thanks for the input.
There's a faction of ex-FrameMaker-on-Mac users who are gathering signers for their petition to revive FrameMaker on Mac. Search Google for terms like "framemaker mac petition" without quotes.
FrameMaker 7.1, I believe, is the last Mac version. It ran on System 9, or a few earlier releases, and on Classic, the System 9 emulator on Tiger. Yours is the most valid reason I've seen for leaving FrameMaker - it's not on the OS you're committed to. I use Parallels on my Mac to run FrameMaker and other applications in Adobe's Technical Communications Suite which is Windows-only.
Aa Peter S. said, InDesign's book feature is a workable tool. Some folks report problems with cross-file cross-references in InDesign books. I'm not familiar whether they are more common on Windows ID or Mac, and not sure which update-level of CS4 or CS5 they affect. If you're having problems with x-refs, search Google for "InDesign cross-references across files," and similar terms without quotes, and if your issues aren't addressed in the links you find, post them here. One cross-file problem with x-refs in books that I can recall occurs in PDFs exported from InDesign; if the PDF export dialog box uses the Interactive output option, instead of the Print output option, the links in the single PDF that's created fail because the output processing goofs up the links it creates in the PDF. I've reported it as a bug. There were instances in later FrameMaker releases that had a similar problem with the Save As PDF process; fixed later, though.
One ID x-ref issue I've seen on the forum is that lots of them slow down InDesign. I believe the commercial InDesign cross-references plug-in from dtptools.com doesn't have the problem; it's also got smarter x-ref format options than either FrameMaker or InDesign.
I believe that InDesign's indexing isn't easy for FrameMaker users to grasp. It took me a while, partly because I don't do it much, and partly because it's a different mindset. Some earlier releases had bugs that soured folks on the index, but they're fixed. Search Google for terms like "InDesign index scripts" or "InDesign online free index tutorials" and similar terms without quotes for more info.
The span/split columns feature in InDesign CS5 that Peter S. mentions is like FrameMaker's straddle (across columns) paragraphs, with a bit of Word's multi-column paragraph attribute thrown in. It's still got a few annoying behaviors, but not disruptive bugs. However, InDesign totally lacks FrameMaker's true side-headings and true run-in paragraphs (a paragraph that can be followed by a paragraph that begins on the same line; IOW, a paragraph with a hard Return but no new line feed.) There are some workarounds.

  • Linking Master Pages

    Is there a way to link master pages between files and update automatically? I know I can import master pages, but if I change the original, I must then re-import the changed file into each derivative. An example of this use is to set up a letterhead, then import it into each kind of file (letter, proposal, project sheet, forms, etc). IDCS3.
    Thanks for your help.

    Create the letterhead as a INDD file, then import the INDD file onto the master page of your new document.
    Any time you update the letterhead, the second file (with the letterhead on the master page) will prompt you to update links, and thus update the master page.

  • Imported paragraph styles are not the same as in original document

    I am using InDesign CC 9.2 x64
    I have document with a whole series of master pages and paragraph styles. I wanted to move these into a blank document, along with a few pages from the original document.
    In the new document I loaded master pages and paragraph styles and all seemed to go fine. I moved a few pages into the document and the paragraph styles don't seem to come up the same. There seems to be larger line spacing than in the original document, but I can't find what the problem is,
    This is really annoying, as the whole point of paragraph styles is that they assure consistency!
    Any ideas??
    thanks!

    Another potential problem is that when you move things into a new document that has attributes like styles or master pages with the same names, but different definitions. The definitions in the receiving document will be used. This can show up on styles based on [Basic Paragraph] where the definition of [Basic Paragraph] does not match, too.

  • Applying paragraph styles to placed text

    I have a catalog document built  with with master pages and paragraph styles. The layout has a grid of  image boxes for product with a text box beneath for descriptions. The  text boxes should have style 1 applied to the 1st line, and style 2  applied to the following lines. Style 1 is applied to the text boxes in  the master, and has next style set to style 2 in the paragraph style  settings. This works fine when typing directly in the document, but I am  placing the text from a word document. When I place the text, InDesign  is just applying the default text settings instead of the correct  styles. Is there a way to get it to automatially apply the correct  styles, or will I need to manually set the styles?
    Using CS5
    thanks,
    Katie

    Part of your answer is very easy: after you've placed your text, select a few paragraphs, and then right-click on "style 1" and select "Apply Style, Then Next Style." That's how to use "Next Style" on text that you've placed.
    The other part of your question -
    When I place the text, InDesign  is just applying the default text settings instead of the correct  styles. Is there a way to get it to automatially apply the correct  styles, or will I need to manually set the styles?
    is a fair bit more complicated. If you're placing Word files, and all of the text in Word is styled with "Normal," then you'd probably need to manually set styles. If the text is in Word, but is styled carefully, then you can click the "Import Options" checkbox upon placing, and you can do all kinds of things to the file, including stripping all Word formatting & mapping Word styles to InDesign styles. If you have text in some other format, it may be possible to automate styling, but it depends completely on what you have to place. Raw text with XML tags? CSV files? RTFs generated by a translation memory tool? If you can post example files or screenshots, we may be able to figure out a way to smooth out this part of your workflow, depending on the materials with which you're working.

  • Adding Custom Breadcrumb for SharePoint 2013 Custom Master-Page With A Custom Separator.

    Hi All,
    I have successfully converted an HTML file to a SharePoint 2013 Custom Master-Page with relevant style sheets. But when I used within the SharePoint site I could not find the breadcrumb. So I want to know how to do that? For that breadcrumb I need a custom
    separator like an arrow like in the below.
    As you can see the separator is a custom built one. To have this custom separator in my HTML I have used the following code snippet.
    <div class="breadcrumb-desktop">
    <span class="breadcrumb-links"><a href="#">SharePoint Site Home</a></span>
    <span class="breadcrumb-links"><a href="#">Sub Link 01</a></span> Active Page
    </div>
    The styles are as like in the below.
    .breadcrumb-desktop {
    width: 100%;
    font-family: Arial;
    padding: 23px 0 40px;
    float: left;
    font-size: 0.75em;
    line-height: 1.25;
    .breadcrumb-desktop > span.breadcrumb-links:after {
    content: " \203A ";
    white-space: pre;
    I have tried the following code snippet within the SharePoint site as
    <!--MS:<asp:sitemappath runat="server" sitemapproviders="SPSiteMapProvider,SPXmlContentMapProvider" rendercurrentnodeaslink="false" hideinteriorrootnodes="true">-->
    <!--ME:</asp:sitemappath>-->
    But it did not display as I wanted.
    So how am I supposed to insert these to my Custom Master-Page's breadcrumb and style them? Please could someone help me to solve this?
    Thanks and regards,
    Chiranthaka

    Hi Chiranthaka,
    Please use the following code snippet in your html master page.
    <div class="CustomBreadcrumbs">
    You are here:
    <!--SPM:<SharePoint:AjaxDelta id="DeltaPlaceHolderPageTitleInTitleArea" runat="server">-->
    <!--SPM:<asp:ContentPlaceHolder id="PlaceHolderTitleBreadcrumb" runat="server">-->
    <!--MS:<asp:sitemappath runat="server" sitemapproviders="SPSiteMapProvider,SPXmlContentMapProvider" rendercurrentnodeaslink="false" hideinteriorrootnodes="true">-->
    <!--ME:</asp:sitemappath>-->

    We can also customize a breadcrumb control, then add it in master page.

  • Master Pages don't transfer when I change page size in a book

    I had exactly the same problem in CS4, which is why I switched to CS5.5 -- but apparently nothing has changed.
    I have a book of about 30 chapters.  It was originally set up in 6x9 format, but after it was all formatted, my client decided he wanted the pages 5x8.
    It should be easy, right?  Just change the layout for the master pages of the Style Source document, fix the text sizing, etc.  Then in each ensuing chapter, just download the new masters from the style source document.  When I get a warning asking me if the master pages in the target document should be overwritten, I say yes and it does its thing.
    Only it doesn't work.  Oh, the text in the masters is all over the place, which is to be expected -- but the master pages and the book pages are still 6x9, not 5x8.
    I tried synchronizing the book, being careful that Master Pages is checked in the options.  I got a warning that some of the text would need to be fixed.  No problem.  Except that the pages in all the documents except the Style Source are still 6x9!!
    I have a feeling I've wasted my money on the upgrade.  A lot of bells and whistles have been added, but the CS4 problems aren't solved.
    Please, can somebody help?  I do this for a living, and I'm wasting waaaaaay too much time trying to clean up messes like these.

    No, Peter, I never solved it.  But thank you for asking!
    I finally started a whole new book, with the smaller master pages.  I saved a few blank pages for each chapter file, then I copied and pasted the text of each chapter onto the new pages.  Fortunately I was able to transfer paragraph and character styles to the new document, and the formatting of the copied text transferred also.
    But it was still a lot of work.
    I don't even want to think about trying to design a document with different size pages!

  • Quick paragraph style application transformation ... or reverse engineering a document the hard way?

    Hi everyone,
    I'm using Indesign 5.5 for Windows and have inherited a technical document with no styling applied (not even text threads or auto-pagination), but all the fonts are in the correct sizes and colours. So it looks ok in print, but trying to actually do anything with it is a nightmare.  For obvious reasons I WANT to apply paragraph styles to the document so I can generate a new auto-updating TOC, maintain and add to it, and all the other good stuff that means.
    My question is this - is my only choice to go through page by page and apply new styles (matching their current appearence) to every different heading and bullet point, or is there a nice easy way (or script) that i can use to whizz through the document for me, neatly applying a new style to each different font variety or element it finds (not altering their appearence) and leaving me with a nice list of styles I can rename (then take all the credit for? ha!) Basically take a document that's already been put together wrong, and make it right? I think this might've been imported into InDesign from something like Quark, hence the state it's in, but I don't have access to anything but this version. Any help you could offer would be great.  Oh, and if (as I suspect) my only option is indeed to apply all the styles manually one line at a time, then feel free to point and laugh, I doubtless deserve it.
    Thanks!
    Phil

    If you need to reproduce the existing page layouts, I'd suggest you read up more on what paragraph styles can do, before annihilating whatever layout and flow behaviors have been stuck on the content. For example, if level "X" headings always start at the top of a text frame, or top of a page, or even top of a right page, or top of a left page, a paragraph style property can do this. So you'd want to create and apply a paragraph that does this to those paragraphs before you thread text frames; the top of <whatever> frame paragraph property will keep the paragraphs in place.
    It is possible to create paragraph styles with properties that behave crazily when they do what you define for them. For example, you can define a paragraph style that sets the style of the paragraph that's created when you press Enter/Return. You can also use the smartness built into the Next Style property. If a paragraph style, say Head1 is defined to create a new paragraph when you press Enter/Return, it can also apply its next style property to the paragraph follows Head1 in the same text selection. So, if you select a paragraph that's supposed to become Head1 (which defines its next style as BodyAfterHead1) and also select the paragraph that follows it,  and then hold down Ctrl+Click on the Head1 style's name in the Paragraph Styles panel, Apply "Head1" then Next Style appears. If BodyAfterHead1 defines Body as its next style, and more than two consecutive paragraphs are selected, Head1 will be applied to the first paragraph, BodyAfterHead1 will be applied to the second paragraph, and Body will be applied to the third and following paragraphs.
    So, you'll be investing in setting up the Next Style property for paragraph styles, and selecting as many consecutive paragraphs as needed for applying a pattern of styles that agrees with your next style definitions. Each time you use this feature, you're collecting benefits from your investment.
    If you need to reproduce the look of the layout on some number of pages, you could export to PDF and use a script to efficiently place each page of a multi-page PDF on a "PDF layer" you create, that appears on every document page in the ID document, lock and move the layer below the active document layer, and use it as a placement underlay.
    Search Google for terms like "InDesign apply style and next style," "InDesign place multipage pdf script," "InDesign installing and using scripts," "InDesign paragraph style keep options," and "InDesign start paragraph options," without quotes, for informative links to anywhere on the Web, as well as on these Adobe forums. To limit the searches to Adobe forums only, include "forums.adobe" without quotes in the search query.

  • Change Master Page based on Text Content

    Hello,
    I have found a few examples relating to changing Master pages based on Style.
    However, I would like to change all Pages that flag "True" with the query of the "2-1134" to to "Master-C" for example.
    I have 12 master Pages with different strings that I don't mind editing the script to make work.
    The document is close to 1,000 pages.
    I am having trouble merging so many different scripts into something that will work.
    Platform: Indesign CS4 6.0.5 - OS X (Intel)
    Thank you so much for your input, help and guidence.

    This is what layers are for. Open the Layers panel and make at least one more layer. Put the graphic on the lower layer and the footer on the upper layer.

  • Synchronizing Master Pages in Book

    I seem to have hit a Catch-22 and I'm hoping somebody can help.
    I'm working on a book consisting of 25 chapters. Currently it's all in one file and that's becoming pretty unwieldy. So I'm breaking it up into separate files and using the book features in ID.
    Every chapter starts the same way -- the first page has a big header with the chapter name. Text starts about halfway down the page. All other pages have folios with chapter names and page numbers, etc. And all the text is threaded together into a single flow.
    So I've created two master spreads, one for the first page and the other for the other pages. I use those masters to create pages and then thread them together. I put together all the chapters this way, and added the chapter names, but didn't add text. And then I realized that the text box on the first page starts at the wrong place. I want it to start a bit higher on the page -- making the box bigger vertically. So I change the master page in the style source and I synchronize.
    And that doesn't work. Now I have two text boxes on each starting page -- one with the old height and one with the new one.
    According to the docs, if a master item has been overridden, and then when you synchronize, the item becomes detached. So I guess my question is: how do I add text to a text box, or thread it, without overriding it?
    Or, more specifically -- how do I change the size of a text box on every starting page of every chapter?
    Thanks very much to anybody who can offer any illumination on this one!
    Steve Cohen

    Jeez -- now I feel like I'm going nuts. Thought I had it figured out. So I went and created some chapters. And bang, I'm right back where I was. So now I'm checking every bloody keystroke.
    Say I have two chapters: 1 & 2. Chapter 1 is the style source.
    I command-option click on the frame on the first page in chapt 1, so it's overridden. I do nothing to chapter 2 (the same frame is not overridden)
    Then I change the master page in chapt 1, making it shorter.
    So far so good. The change propagates when I synch.
    But if I just cmd-opt click in the same frame in chapt 2 -- so both frames are overridden -- bang, when I synch, the frame is detached in chapt 2.
    No threading required. Just overriding the frame in both the style source and the same frame in the other chapter.

  • Tying a Master Page to a Paragraph Style

    As a relative newbie to InDesign (and indeed book layout) I'm really chuffed that my first attempt looks pretty good now I have the first proof in my hands. Have had a few small tweaks to sort out and one thing that I have found cumbersome is that I have 3 master pages - the A-master for almost all the book with running headers and page numbers, the B-master for the first page in each chapter which has no running header and has some page decoration and the C-master for the special pages in the front matter that don't have page numbers and running headers. As we've gone through and made some adjustments the pages have shifted slightly and of course I've found that the B-masters get out of sync because the content shuffles but the master page allocation doesn't get tied to the page with teh Chapter Heading style on it. Is there an easy (or even not so easy) way to tie these together to avoid having to resync, double and triple check them?

    I don't know if there's an existing script for this; others on the forum may know.
    However, Autoflow Pro, a commercial InDesign plug-in from in-tools.com can do this. There's a free trial.

  • In Pages (5.5.1) can I create multiple Paragraph Styles within one paragraph?

    In Pages (5.5.1) can I create multiple Paragraph Styles within one paragraph.
    I need to make a table of contents for my Mater's Thesis and want to use the automatic table of contents feature.  I want the first sentence of a paragraph to have a different paragraph setting than the rest of the paragraph.  Is this possible?
    Thanks!

    Nice of you to be doing this for your Mother's Thesis.
    There are several issues here:
    1. A Paragraph Style is what it says, the style for the paragraph
    2. You can format text within a paragraph by applying a Character Style
    3. Pages 5.5.1 lets you apply formatting to overall text for the T.O.C. but not parts of it and you can not retain that formatting as a Paragraph style
    So in answer to your question, no.
    You will need to create the T.O.C. manually and unfortunately as Pages 5.5.1 can't create bookmarks (just one of over 100 missing features) you will be unable to link the T.O.C. to the referred pages in the list.

  • How to link a text box to an anchor frame in the master pages?

    Ok, as the title states, we are trying to figure out if it is possible to link a text box to an anchor frame in the master page. When you look at our Master Page layout, we have a text box in the upper left hand corner of the left hand page, this is used for our machine serial numbers. Then we have an anchor frame that automatically fills out the figure number. Let's say I have pages 2 & 3 (left & right), they have a S/N at the top of the page for the machine, then pages 4 & 5 have a different S/N. If I have to add more pages in between pages 2 & 3 (bumping the current 4 & 5 to 6 & 7), the anchor frame bumps to the next page, but the S/N text box doesn't. Is there a way to fix it so that they both move to the next page? Thanks for the help.
    P.S. I can include images and other info if needed.

    I have included a two pictures that should help me explain.
    Master Page:
    This is the master page set up, the "Page Text Box" has the flow set to "B" while the S/N text box has the flow set to "A". This setup is for our parts manuals, the left page is usually an illustration while the right page is usually a parts list. The text box, anchored frame & paragraph tag are empty in the master page set up. The "page text box" has a flow of "B" and the "S/N text box" has a master flow of "A".
    Body Page 1:
    When we create new pages, the paragraph tag automatically fills in the figure title on the left page, then we add an anchor frame within the text box to hold the illustration. You will notice that I added in a "test" serial number at the top of the page. Now if I need to go back and add two pages before this, the anchor frame, illustration and parts list will move to a new page, but the S/N text box will not. The "Before S/N TBD" would stay on the original page.
    This is what happens, the text box containing the illustration and the parts list "bump" to the next page, but the S/N text box does not. So the question we have is there a way to link that text box to the page so when we create new pages the S/N text box moves with the illustration.
    Does this help?
    Thanks for the assistance Error7103.

  • Hyperlink text colour styles won't apply in master page

    Hello,
    I've applied hyperlinks and changed the link styles with ease in all of the content pages.  However, I'm unable to change anything on the master page.
    All of the hyperlinks work - I am able to link to the content pages/emails - but none of the edit link styles will apply.
    But it's a bit wonky, I have had it apply, but completely randomly and only on 1 menu item.
    I designed the menu from scratch, without the use of a widget.  I thought maybe it was that, so I made a widget menu, and I can't get it to apply any edit link styles as well.
    All I want is a simple rollover where the text changes to a different colour.  This should be easy!
    Please help if you can, it's driving me bonkers!
    Thanks.

    @fac586 - Would adding the CSS to page0 to make it's effect global be frowned upon?I'd certainly frown upon it. According to the relevant HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.x standards, <tt>style</tt> and <tt>link rel="stylesheet"</tt> elements should only appear within the <tt>head</tt> element of a document.
    IN HTML5 the new <tt>scoped</tt> attribute allows <tt>style</tt> to be used in a prescribed way elsewhere in the document, with the effect that the styling rules specified are only to be applied to the other descendant elements of that <tt>style</tt> element's parent. No browsers yet support this feature.
    Current browsers apply CSS from <tt>style</tt> elements globally, regardless of where in the document it appears, and future HTML5-compliant ones will continue to do so for backwards compatibility.
    As a standards-based developer I follow the specs and only put <tt>style</tt> and <tt>link</tt> elements in the page <tt>head</tt>. When browsers get round to supporting the <tt>scoped</tt> attribute I'll follow the standards for that as well if it's necessary to use it.
    In APEX, Page 0 doesn't provide any normal means to create <tt>style</tt> elements in the <tt>head</tt> of the document so as to conform with the specs.
    Why bother following the standards if the browser is going to apply styling irrespective of whether <tt>style</tt> elements conform or not? Mainly to provide a better user experience. Rendering a document that contains stylesheets in the body causes flickering and jumping of content as the browser re-renders already visible content affected by CSS rules found later in the document.

  • What is the best practice for creating master pages and styles with translated text?

    I format translated text all the time for my company. I want to create a set of master pages and styles for each language and then import those styles into future translated documents. That way, the formatting can be done quickly and easily.
    What are the best practices for doing this? As a company this has been tried in the past, but without success. I'd like to know what other people are doing in this regard.
    Thank you!

    I create a master template that is usually void of content, with the exception I define as many of the paragraph styles I believe can/will be used with examples of their use in the body of the document--a style guide for that client. When beginning a new document for that client, I import those styles from the paragraph styles panel.
    Exception to this is when in a rush I begin documentation first, then begin new work. Then in the new work, I still pull in those defined paragraph and or object styles via their panels into the new work.
    There are times I need new styles. If they have broader applicability than a one-off instance or publication, then I open the style template for that client and import that style(s) from the publication containing the new style(s) and create example paragraphs and usage instructions.
    Take care, Mike
