Link to a pdf page on web from a chm file

Hello,
I'm using RoboHelp 9.0.2.  I'm trying to create a link in a chm file to a specific pdf page using a URL.  The link I am using is http://www.actuarialstandardsboard.org/pdf/exposure/ASOP_No27_second%20exposure_2011.pdf#p age=41
I put the above line in my chm file.  It appears correctly in the URL project list and shows correctly when I choose Show.  It also apeears to be correct in the HTML code of the page.
However when I create the chm clicking on the link just brings me the start of the pdf file.  After clicking on the link in the chm file and explorer opens, the URL in explorer does not show #page=41.  It ends at.pdf.
Am I missing something or does anyone kno whys this is not working?
Thanks
John

Hi there
That link doesn't even work for me when I paste it into the address bar of my Firefox browser. It does work in IE, but not in Firefox. In Firefox it opens the PDF generically.
I tested in a CHM and it did try and link, but it presents a black page. Looks like the correct page, but it's blacked out.
CHM files rely upon elements of Internet Explorer to display their content. So perhaps it's something specific to a certain version of Internet Explorer as well as a certain version of the Acrobat Reader.
Cheers... Rick

How can I create a link from a CHM file to a webhelp file?
The CHM output (accreditation.chm) is stored in a parent directory, and the webhelp output (index.htm) is stored in a child directory.

Open the usual Link dialog and enter the relative path from where the CHM will be installed to where the webhelp will be installed.

  • Recreating help pages from a .chm file

    Hello,
I have a situation where numerous help pages have been
removed from a project. I think this happened when we had some
problems witha network drive & checking files from this
location into a source control tool. It has gone unnoticed until
now. The .chm file is intact & I'm wondering if there is a way
of recreating my project from the .chm file?
any help would be greatly appreciated!!

  • Links problem in PDF (opened in web browser)

    Hi,
I have a problem with the way Adobe reader works when it is embedded in Internet Explorer 7.
The PDF is well opened but inside this PDF i have links to others PDF, this links doesn't work inside IE but when the PDF is opened inside Reader it works.
    Some precisions :
    - I have a set of PDF files with references in a hierarchy of directories on the machine
    - I have a root HTML file which is the entry point for the navigation through the PDF files set, a link in this HTML file open a PDF in the browser, then links to other PDF in the first PDF doesn't work
    - If i open the first PDF in Reader, links works
    - Inside the PDF the links seems to be File Links with relative paths
    - I think it's possible that there are security restrictions in Internet Explorer that inactive the links but i didn't found these options
    - i'ts also possible that when the first PDF is open, the current path is incorrect with the relative path of the link
I have no solution with this problem.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks by advance
    Regards

i do NOT think that it is a helpful answer .
You may not think so, but it sounds like a very plausible explanation and a mighty good place to start looking.
In your site definition settings, are your links relative to Document or Site Root?
Which operating system are you using?
Did you get all the latest updates for CS3 since re-installing?

  • Accessing Specific PDF page in a hyperlink within CHM

I have built a CHM in RoboHelp 9 and am trying to make a hyperlink that will take the reader directly to an included PDF page number, that starts a section in this PDF of about 3 pages.

Having multiple images in a tiff file is probably not the best practice. THe image object meta data might not make much sense (width, height, format...).
    But....
For 8.1.7, there is no way to do it from PL/SQL. You could do it outside the database in a servlet.
For 9i, there is an undocumented interface to allow for access to tiff images other than the first image that is being considered for documentation with 10i.

  • Derive project file from compiled chm file

Hello. I have CHM file which I wish to edit. I can de-compile
using HTML Help Workshop, but I do not get the Project file, which
I need to import back into Robohelp.
Can anyone tell me how to do this derivation? I need to use
    Robohelp for this action.
    Thanks.

    Hi, tanguero33484,
If you're having the same problems as me accessing Peter
Grainge's site at the moment, the short answer to you question is:
decompile the .chm file with KeyTools, which is available from
    here:
    http://www.keyworks.net/keytools.htm
Its decompile function provides the option to re-create the
.hhp file — albeit an approximation of the original.
Edit: Looks like Peter's site is back again!

  • Adobe acrobat 7 (8) - URL-link to specific pdf-page

Is there any way to create page specific URLs in Acrobat 7.0 (or 8.0)? I was hoping that somebody know if there is a way that I can create links from a web page directly to a page in a pdf file.

    Read following document:

  • How to create PDF of only book from entire IBA file?

How do I extract a PDF of ONLY the completed book from an unencrypted IBA file (which contains all related materials and is 568 MBs). Existing conversion to PDF methods convert the entire file. Thanks, Cora

For clarity, when referring to the "actual book" versus the "entire iBA file", do you mean
    (a) actual book: text only
    (b) entire iBA file: resources other than text (eg images, videos)
When creating a PDF from any kind of document (iBA, Word, etc) you generally get two main options.
    1. To create a PDF from all pages in the file, which of course includes all text, images, videos, audio etc
    2. To print to PDF, which allows you to specify pages. Obviously if the pages you specify also contain images and video for example, they'll come across in the PDF created too. There's no way around that. Images look great. Video just a black area on the page usually - it's static in PDF form afterall :)
You mention that earlier PDF versions of your book are more in keeping of what you want. My first thought when reading this was that your book now has more resources added to it than earlier stages of development, as one would expect!
I would suggest trying to be precise in your descriptions of exactly what you want to be included in a PDF copy of a file created in iBA rather than just repeating generic terms in successive posts.
    Hope that helps! :)

  • How to create a PDF page that displays in Email and contains links to a page in the full PDF.

    Mac, CS 5
I was able to create the PDF page and activate links to pages in the full PDF document. But when I test-email both files to myself, the links do not work.

You have created links between two PDFs while they were regular disk-based files (I assume using the 'open a file' link action). When they're both attachments to an email message they are no longer in any meaningful 'location'. Some mail clients will extract all the attachments in a message into a temporary cache folder, so they do end up being able to see one another; but others will open each attachment on demand and prevent them from accessing anything else. Attachments are a huge security risk and sandboxing them is always best practice - the result of which is that lots of PDF functions just don't work.

  • How do I disable audio on a pdf page when opening a link that also has audio?

    Hi,
I have a pdf page that has audio that plays when the page is visible. I set the "disable" audio to happen when the page is no longer visible. That works great. However, I have a link on the pdf page that opens an attached pdf page. I specifically want that linked page to open in a new window. It just so happens that the attached page also has audio. I cannot find a way to disable the first audio. As it is now, both audios play at the same time.
Thanks for any help you can give on this!

  • Linking in a PDF Via coordinance or hover over

I have been looking for a way/tool/script/etc to create links to other PDF, or HTML, ETC from within a PDF. For example if you are viewing a PDF in a browser, the PDF has a picture of an orange and an apple, if you click on the orange it takes you to orange.pdf if you click on the apple it takes you to apple.htm. Can anyone direct me to an application or anything that can help me? Is this even possible with PDF?
Thank you, and I am sorry if this is a stupid question.

  • Best practice - linking to exeternal PDFs in FM and in turn, in RH

I am using TCS2 with FM and RH.  My goal is this:
    - to create an FM doc (with multiple chapters) and links to external PDFs. When I generate the FM file as a PDF, it will correctly allow users to click on the links and view those external PDF docs.
    - import the FM doc (with multiple chapters) into RH, and create HTML webhelp. Ideally, have the imbedded links in the FM docs (to external PDFs) generate automatically in the RH doc, so that the produced HTML online help doc can have links clicked on that also open the external PDFs.
    Questions:
-best way to do this in FM? I assume I will need to create my PDFs in a portfolio (package?) so external clients keep the documentation in the same place (otherwise the hyperlinks will break, I assume)
-best way to have it work in RH?
    -things to watch out for?
    TIA!

    Hi there
In Frame, do you have options to "include" files that aren't actually part of the Frame Project? (Note that I'm not a Frame user, so I'm making an assumption that it works similarly to RoboHelp and creates "projects" that are composed of smaller elements).

  • Is it possible to link a topic from another help file?

I apologized if topic has been discussed/answered. I was
wondering if it is possible to link a topic from another help file?
So, basically my client has a help file .chm that was created by
someone else. I am brought in to create another help file. so,
basically for the help file that i'm creating a topic call vacation
hours but this topic is already in the previous help file instead
of including that in the new help file can i create some see also
link to this topic in the previous help file and the topic vacation
hours from the previous help file display once someone click on the
link. please let me if this possible and how i can do this.
    thank in advance
    bob

    Hi, Bob, and welcome,
Yes, you can create links from one .chm file to another. The
    HTML syntax is as follows:
    <a
    href="TargetHelpFile.chm::/path_to/TargetTopic.htm">Link
    text</a>
    For example:
    <a href="htmlhelp.chm::/topics/chmweb.htm">Click here
    for more information</a>
To ensure that you're specifying exactly the right path
    information to the target topic:
    1) Open the target help file.
    2) Display the required topic.
    3) Right-click it and then, on the context menu, select
    Properties.
In the resulting properties dialog box, you can copy the path
information out of the Address field and abbreviate it
appropriately (you need the name of the target .chm file and
    everything that follows it).
For this type of link to work, the target help file must be
in the same folder as your source help file or in the Windows Help
folder, or it must be registered under the following key in the
    Windows registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\HTML Help

  • Can .chm files link to .html files?

    Hi,
I'm using RoboHelp X5 and cannot find a way to link from a
.chm file to an .htm page. It seems like it should be simple,
    but.....
Is this a known issue, software limitation, or am I missing
something? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    :) Kathy

    Kathy,
    A couple of items.
In linking to an external .htm file it is useful to use the
parser function to find it. This is documented in the Help Workshop
help file. I've never had any trouble with using it for external
    files.
Secondly, the compiler is fickle and wants to be smarter than
you so if you link to an external file it just might include that
file in the compiled project, thinking you want it there. Of
course, you don't. You just put it in the project directory to test
it. So, what you get is a version of your .htm file compiled into
the help, which defeats the purpose of having it external so it can
be edited outside of the help. I think this is a Microsoft design
flaw, but someone might think it is a great feature.
