Link to a Word doc in a PDF is not opening the doc in Internet Exlorer 8

I have a PDF created in Acrobat 9 Pro, I have given a link to a word doc. The PDF and link is working perfectly on browsers other than Internet Explorer 8.
In IE-8 Even if allow to open the doc when prompted, nothing happens.
How can I fix this?

Dropbox has a convenient feature to preview DOC files as PDFs in Firefox's built-in PDF viewer. It's convenient but can lead to this problem that you end up downloading the document as a PDF instead of a DOC file.
As long as the recipient uses the Download button on Dropbox's toolbar above the viewer (see attached screen shot comparison), the recipient should get the original format instead of the preview.
Is that the issue?

Go to the main Library folder and look for a folder called Application Support / Microsoft.
There are a few folders in there, and you may have to do some digging. In one of them (mine is called MAU2.0), there should be a file called Microsoft Autoupdate. Open it.
    It looks like this:
check the button for manual updates.
That should let you open the apps without triggering an automatic update.

  • All files in one group of folders (jpeg, gif, doc, ppt and pdf) do not open.

I have a lot of files that I use as teaching material (gifs, jpegs, pdfs, web archives, Word files, PowerPoint presentations) that are in a number of different folders and which I store on an external drive, then copy every year to my hard drive when I teach that subject. I update these files and folders, then copy back to the external hard drive when I have finished teaching. These were all fine last year, but when I try to open any of the files, they all have problems. The image files in Photoshop have the error 'unknown or invalid JPEG marker', in Preview the error is 'it may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn't recognise', the PDFs return 'not a supported file type or the file has been damaged', the Word files as to be converted when opened and return nonsense, and the Powerpoint presentations return 'PowerPoint found a problem with content in the file' and after attempting to repair returns 'the file may be damaged'. Any idea what is going on here and how I can fix this? There are 1400 items, which have taken years to compile for my teaching. I have tried opening the files on my external hard drive and on my backup disc, but the same happens.
I've never posted on a forum before, so I hope this is the right place to ask! Any help is most welcome!

The backup files are more recent than when I used them a year ago - I have tried them and I still get the same problem.

  • When I save a Word 2010 doc as a pdf file, it opens up in Adobe Reader as a blank page, no text, no background etc.

When I save a Word 2010 doc as a pdf file, it opens up in Adobe Reader as a blank page, no text, no background etc.  I am logged on as the Administrator, running Windows 7, using Microsoft Home and Business 2010.

You were right, it was a Microsoft problem.
I got it...I am now able to save a Word 2010 document as a pdf file.  Here is what I did/found:
In Word, go to File, Options, Display and make sure that "Print drawing created in word" is CHECKED.
Mine was unchecked and when I checked it everything came back and is working as it did before.  The only thing I can think of is that a Microsoft Update may have changed this selection...I know I DID NOT make any changes in the options.
One other thing I noticed in my saved documents folders was that a lot of my files showed up as PDF's and would still not open until I selected one and told it to default to open as a word document and then they all changed back and I was able to open them in word again.
I hope this helps others out there.

I don't believe it will open a Word document, but Writepad allows for handwritten conversion of notes to text and then to email. Might help you some of the way...

  • How can I get back my Word docs now that Pages will not open them?

How can I retrieve my Word docs now that Pages will not open them in Mavericks.  I have a brand new iMac with my evolving manuscript for a book transsferred from my now defunct MacBook Pro by external drive.  Pages tells me that "PowerPC apps are "no longer supported" and Mavericks will not open Microsoft Office, though it is still in Applications.  Would really appreciate ANY help!

You will have to have an app that will open them first, you can upgrade to Office for Mac 2011 which is an Intel based app then open the docs and retry. Your docs were created with extremely old version of Office for Mac, version 2004!
Another possiblity is  using a web based compatible MS Office for Mac app and see if it will open your doc and then save it, then attempt to re-open in Pages.

Blank error message with ? appears and PDF does not open in Browser (IE11) when clicking link to open pdf. PC - IE11 Acrobat 9.0
Cannot access in browser PDF files unless blank box is closed and then website address is clicked on again in browser address bar and page reloaded.
Uninstalled Acrobat 9, reinstalled, still same problem.
    Help please!

Yes I can it only happens in the browser..
I reinstalled Windows on my machine and started over a couple of weeks ago.
When my desktop started up I didn’t have Acrobat installed and clicked on a pdf file and the open with xxx dialogue box came open.
I chose a different program as Acrobat wasn’t installed yet so it associated pdf files with another program.
Later Installed Acrobat and couldn’t associate the pdf file with acrobat so I went into Folder Options and manually associated PDF files with Acrobat.
Ever since then I get the error when something is downloaded and opened in the browser.
Works fine everywhere else and when I cancel the blank error, highlight the web address and press enter to reload it works 90% of the time.
    Not sure what to do..

I am trying to convert  word document to a PDF but only half the document accurately converts. Is there a way to fix this?

I have found that complicated document structures causes Word to split the document into parts, but I've always gotten the whole thing, in multiple documents.
However, with two pages, I can't imagine it is that complicated.
Any odd fonts or paragraph styles?

Step one is to log into a newly created admin user account and see if the problem persists.

  • PDF File not opening in browser for sharepoint 2010

Recently we have moved our web application from one server to another in Sharepoint 2010. Back up of entire web application was taken and restored in another server. But in the new server , the PDF files in the document library is not getting opened in browser.
    it always open in browser
I have already made following changes but didn,t work
Set browser file handling to Permissive from central admin
Set "open in browser" in setting s of doc library
Set the doc library file handling property using $docLib = $web.lists["Your Document Library Title"] $docLib.BrowserFileHandling = "Permissive" $docLib.Update()
    Added "AllowedInlineDownloadedMimeType.Add("Application/Pdf") in web app
Installed Adober eader in client machine
Even after trying all these, the PDF files are still opening in Client application(Adobe reader) but not in the browser
It would have been great help if anybody provide a solution for this. I have been banging head on this for two days

It would be handy if you didn't double post too.

To answer your question, you've tried most things that I normally see working, but there may be an extra solution here for you.  The solution 2 Powershell that deals with updating the Inline MimeType may help.

  • Weblinks pdfs will not open with recent install of Version X1?

Weblink pdfs will not open using the newly installed Adobe X1 version. How to fix?
Gives message suggesting problem with reader and ends with 103:103

    Hi Gordon,
Can you please try opening the following PDF: http://samplepdf.com/sample.pdf.
Do try to open it in browser by clicking the abobe link and in Adobe Reader itself by Right-Click on link->"Save link as".
If you still getting these error, uninstall Reader using http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html and reinstall Reader from http://get.adobe.com/reader.

  • Left click on a link does not open the link; a small blue window opens saying loading then closes.

Left click on any link in a web page does not open the link. A very small blue window appears with the word loading and a few moving dots. In a few seconds the blue window closes but the link does not open. Links used to open. If I right click the link, I can open the link in a new window. Many new windows pile up. This is a nuisance.
I am using Firefox 3.6.8 for Canonical 1.0 in Ubuntu 9.10.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the ''Safe mode'' start window.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (on Mac: "Firefox > Quit")

It sounds like you have chosen a publishing template rather than a word processing template. There are two basic modes in MS Word: word processing and publishing layout. Word processing mode (and all word processing templates) have a continuous text box in the page for writing text. The publishing layout mode (and publishing templates) are documents that have text boxes placed for articles, titles, pictures, etc. Be sure to choose the word document template and you’ll get what you expect. Do not choose the word publishing document.

  • Just purchased Imac running Lion - doc. and cwk. extensions will not open            . whats the fix?

just purchased Imac running Lion - doc. and cwk. extensions will not open. whats the fix?

Pages 4.3 is the most recent, but no matter. If Pages cannot open it, there are many other programs that may be able to. Some of them are free.
    LibreOffice (donation-supported)
NeoOffice ($10 but older version is free if you can find it)
    OpenOffice (completely free)
Try TextEdit also. It is included in OS X.
If you are trying to open the document by double-clicking it, don't, since the Finder may be looking for a program that is no longer installed. Use Pages' File > Open... menu. The same recommendation applies to using any of the above alternatives - use their File > Open menu.
The least attractive alternative is to purchase Microsoft Word, but I have been completely Microsoft-free since updating to Lion.

I saved docs from a iMac to a flashdrive but when I plug the flashdrive into an iBookG4 and try to open the docs on the flashdrive, I get this message: Doc 2 cannot be opened. It appears if you write the document with newer version Pages and try to open it older version Pages.
