Link to Apple Configurator 1.6
Greetings. I need to run Apple Configurator, but the version in the application store is not OS X 10.9 compatible. I have tried searching the Apple downloads for it without success, and chatting to their support has not yet revealed it. I need 1.6.
Does anyone know where there might be a working link to download this version please?
This new AC 1.6 seems to be taking more time than 1.5 because of more forced processes.
If users of AC want to do all of this restore and re-applying of iOS let be an option or let users that want this to happen do a few mouse clicks to make it happen. They should not force this on all users of AC 1.6.
Someone at Apple was not thinking fully of a school scenario where time is important.
Check out and Check in should only move user files and that's it.
iOS should be left alone and Apps should stay.
This is a pilot program for us, if it stays this way, iPads will not be recommended.
Maybe look for some Chromebooks and Apps.
Hope Apple looks at these posts and takes them into consideration.

Apple Configurator.ipa file linked to Apple ID
Is there a way to separate a free app deployed through the Apple Configurator from the Apple ID that was used to download the .ipa file in the first place. The association with the original Apple ID causes the two to be linked and therefore users cannot update the App without entering the password of the originating Apple ID.
AirWatch can't take a backup of an iPad and redeploy that image such as you'd use in Symantec Ghost. It can deploy apps based on a specific configuration that you define, but it's not as seemless as Apple Configurator where you can force any app to one or many ipads at the same time with the click of a single button.
There's a downside to deploying apps via Apple Configurator though and that is the binding of the Apple ID to the app which also affects how that app is updated. Back to gyrhead's response to my question, "You could use a generic organizational Apple id for the Configurator piece just for this purpose and provide everyone with the log in credentials for it" but even this isn't fool proof.
If sharing a single Apple ID works for you, then you have your answer. As a workaround to avoid sharing Apple ID's, I've had to delete the app that was loaded by Apple Configurator and ask the user to re-install the app from AirWatch's App Catalog or push it OTA from AirWatch's console. -
Apple configurator - Passcode Restriction saving on one ipad but won't save on the others
I have read a few different posts about the ipad restrictions passcode not transferring to the rest of my ipads but can’t understand why it saves on one of them ?
I have 2 cabinets with 10 ipads in each both linked up to an imac using Apple Configurator.
On iPad One I’ve set up the available restrictions within profile, added apps, changed wallpaper/background etc and the enabled restrictions using a passcode on the actual device and backed up.
I then apply the backup and profile to the remainder 19 ipads and everything looks fine except enable restrictions is set to off on all of the 19 ipads.
So I think this can’t be a setting that’s transferable. I then un-tick Automatic Refresh in Preferences and go through all 19 ipads and enable restrictions manually choosing the exact same passcode for all devices.
I plug them back in and refresh the devices. All 19 loose their passcode except for ipad one ?
Why does ipad one save this setting yet all other 19 devices cant save theirs ?
I intend of giving out the 20 ipads for public use but can restrict users from going in to settings, then reset and erase the device back to factory settings.
This seems like a basic requirement for anyone deploying ipads for public, business or education use.
Is there a smarter way to do this that I a missing?HI nsdjoey,
Many thanks for your reply.
Hopefully this will be an update within Apple Configurator soon. The configurator has the potentail to be a great tool but lacks soem really basic features.
I'll take a look at making an encrypted backup in iTunes, although none of my iPads are showing up as devices within iTunes. Maybe becasue they are in supervise mode ?
Also just noticed that iPad 20 is not appearing in the Configurator even though its conected and lit up in the sync cab. I've change leads and ports in the cab but getting nothing.
Thanks for your advice. -
Apple Configurator - setting up carts
I am trying to fine tune my instructions on how to setup iPads on a Bretford cart. Any feed back would be great.
Thanks
Make sure that no iPads are plugged in
Make sure you have your itunes account setup
Authorize you iTunes account on the computer that you will be using to manage the iPads
Download your free and paid Apps
(make sure you use the same iTunes Apple ID in iTunes as you do in Apple Configurator)
Quit iTunes
Connect all iPads in the cart
Open Apple Configurator
Go to Prepare tab
Under Settings
Name iPad (I give it the teachers name and a - mark, I add the numbers in step 6)
Supervision: ON
Check box Allow devices to connect to other Macs (this is helpful when a teacher wants to download a movie off student iPad onto their teacher computer)
iOS should be Latest
Check box Erase before installing
Restore: Don’t Restore Backup
Check profile(s) - (this is where you add your wifi network and restrictions)
Hit the Prepare button (this is going to take about an hour)
Quit Configurator
iTunes Sync
Open iTunes
The Welcome to Your New iPad screen will appear
Click on Setup as New iPad, hit Continue
Click on Get Started
You must do this for each iPad
Quit iTunes
Name the iPads
Open Configurator
Go to the Supervise tab
Name the iPads (it is easier to pull the all out, and plug one at a time to name)
The iPads do not show up on the list in the order that they are plugged in
Preparing the Master iPad (use iPad #1)
Remove iPad #1
Go through the registration sequence
Go to Settings
Go to Restrictions
Turn on
We use the same code for all of our carts
Turn off the ability to delete apps
We add the code so that they students cannot add a code themselves and lock us out of the iPads
Plug back in iPad
Go to the Apps tab
Add any new apps and VPP codes
Check all boxes
Hit Refresh (this takes over an hour depending on how many apps you are installing)
Remove iPad and put Apps into folders (examples below of what we did for our school)
Apple
Chinese
Mathematics
Science
Spanish
Grade level folder
Put main folders in the Dock (Apple, Mathematics, Grade level folder)
Plug in iPad #1
Do a backup, under the Prepare tab
Click on iPad #1
Click on the Settings tab
Click on Restore and select Back Up...
Name the backup (it would be a good idea to add the date)
Clone iPads
Click on Supervise tab
Click on All iPads (#)
Click on Apps tab
Check all boxes for the Apps
Under the Restore select your backup
Click Refresh (this should take about an hour)
Once they have all image, make sure you change the Restore option back to Don’t Restore BackupGreetings and Hello H. Lam

Software deployment using Apple Configurator
Hello,
We are going to be deploying MacBook Air computers to our teachers and I was wondering whether anyone has used Apple Configurator to manage and supervise sofware deployment. I have searched these forums and I've seen a few tutorials that show AC managing mobile devices. I do intend using AC to manage our iPads (used by some of our teachers). We are primarily a Windows environment, however, this year, some of our teachers have opted for Macs and I'm trying to find the most efficient way to manage all these devices. Any advice or suggestions would be most helpful.
Thanks,
CASYes, an MDM is your best bet. If you aren't currently using an MDM and want to try one out, there is a free MDM solution by Meraki called Systems Manager. http://www.meraki.com/products/systems-manager/ . They have a location feature that might help you. The MDM can also allow you to lock the screen or do a remote wipe to keep the thief from accessing the data on the iPad.
You can also have your users sign up with the Find My iPad app http://www.apple.com/ipad/find-my-ipad.html to help locate a stolen iPad.
As ryanm512 said, if you Supervise your iPads in Apple Configurator the iPads can only be unsupervised using the computer that Supervised them.
However, everything is out the window if the thief resets the iPad when its not connected to a network. Once wiped clean, the MDM and Find My iPad won't work.

Can't import spreadsheet in Apple Configurator
I just bought codes for an app in the VPP Store and proceeded to try to import the spreadsheet into Apple Configurator and this is the error that appears:
"There was a problem importing the redemption codes. The file “Preview.html” couldn’t be opened because there is no such file."
Several weeks ago, I did successfully import a spreadsheet, but even that one wouldn't re-import. I'm running 10.7.5 and Apple Configurator version 1.2.1.After weeks of e-mails and calls back and forth with Apple, my problem was solved. Below is the message that gave me the solution. I don't know if my problem was isolated or if this may apply to anyone else having the problem.
"Okay so basically here is the issue
there is a folder at the root level named tmp but there shouldn't be. We need to remove that folder and create the folder where it should be
Remove the /tmp folder.
Note: please make sure this command is typed out exactly the way you see it below, without the $
$ sudo rm -R /tmp
2. Create the new symbolic link.
$ sudo ln -s private/tmp /tmp
Do those 2 steps and if the issue isn't solved then call me or email me back. Those commands are case sensitive and very sensitive to mistake. So please make sure they are EXACT. If you have any questions call or email before running the commands." -
With Apple configurator, how to set AirPrint to print IPPS
Dear Community,
My office wish to setup Airprint with Ipads.
My IT, however blocked the mDNS
I manage to use Apple Configurator to config the AirPrint.
it now show IPP://192.168.1.101/printers/AirPrint
I heard that airprint support IPPS.
I am wondering how I can achieve this?
In my print server, I already have IPPS setup for Windows.
Regards,
GoRayI assume you meant IPP not IPPS
see the section on "Legacy printer support"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AirPrint
My IT, however blocked the mDNS
Talk to them. Progress is making changes. Remember, IT didn't approve of PCs.
You need the AirPrint version of IPP. You need a means of communicating over wifi with your printers.
printing to a non-airprinter from an iPad
To print from the iPad, your going to have to install some more software:
-- install a printer app on the ipad. many printer makers have iPad applications for their printers. Look in the app store
-- install enabling software on a computer which you have connected the printer
on your iPad install the Helper app -- /print n share
This should/may get around the mDNS blockage.
Print directly to the widest range of network or WiFi printers available in any app. Alternatively print via your computer to ALL printers including USB & Bluetooth printers. View read and display large PDF, Office & iWork files. Easily transfer & store files from the Cloud or your computer.

on your server
For Windows, try:

PrintCentral
PrintCentral is the supreme printing app for the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch
A real DEBE -- does everything but eat.
http://mobile.eurosmartz.com/products/printcentral.html
Mac and Windows
"WePrint enables printing to shared printers for iOS/Android devices from our range of printing Apps."
http://mobile.eurosmartz.com/downloads.html
You need a means of communicating over wifi with your printers.
You will need to avoid going through your existing wifi routers. You will note that you will need to be in direct wifi range of the printer or print server. Wifi range in a building is about a 100 feet.
solutions ( your IT may not like this. Be sure your boss approves of these solutions. )
-- install wifi donge on your print servers. This will give you a direct wifi path to your printer servers
-- buy a new printer that supports adhock printing.
-- install the airprint software on some pc with wifi. The software will forward your print job to the real printer.

Meraki Systems Manager vs Apple Configurator?
I see people waving around Meraki Systems Manager as an alternative to Apple Configurator for mobile device management, but it is unclear what specific advantages Meraki offers vs Apple Configurator.
There seem to be some very serious limitations, particularly with regard to backing up and restoring device images, as well as App pre-installation. The Apple Configurator stores all that data locally on the iMac's hard drive, and the images and apps to load can be gigabytes in size but transfers as fast as the USB 2.0 iPad cable can handle it.
Meanwhile Meraki claims to be wholly "cloud based", which means it is at the mercy of your Internet connection for downloading or restoring. I am not interested in dragging our Internet connection to an absolute crawl by repeatedly downloading the same gigabytes of data over and over for each "cloud managed" MDM iPad.
How is Meraki handling this, or does it just not do image backups and restores?I just wanted to say thanks to everyone ( Gyrhead etc ) who has contributed to this thread.
Has anyone written a howto guide for Meraki or another MDM used in tandem with Configurator?
We are on year 2 of configurator. We may now add another MDM tool.
We also share the WAN load concerns. We do not want to drag our internet connection to a absolute crawl. LOL. They called it Skynet for a reason. Due to our rual location our WAN speed is highly limited. Using a combination of registry hacks and router tricks we force ios and windows7 and other tools to update only after 4pm.
FYI. I've written a howto guide for starting out cold on Configurator. See below. Cheers, J

HT5622 changing name linked to apple ID

I am working with Apple configurator. As soon as there is an update. It takes part of the day to get the downloads off the Apple web site. I have 25 machines that need the updates so getting one with all the updates takes a long time and then I have to trasfer the files to the other machines. Is there a second location were I can go just to get the updates for Apple Configurator and not were the entire world of Apple is pulling from. I have the same problem every time there are any updates. It takes about 3 full days to pull all the updates and update all the machines. I am lossing a lot of process time and need to solution to this problem.
Purchases are considered final, but you can try the 'report a problem' link to contact iTunes Support and see if they will refund or credit you : http://reportaproblem.apple.com
If the 'report a problem' link doesn't work then you can try contacting iTunes Support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption
To try and stop it happening again you can use Settings > General > Restrictions on your phone to prevent in-app purchases, and you can require your password to be entered for every download (the default is a 15 minute period during which it doesn't need re-entering). -
Apple Configurator and Mass Device Set-up
I’m having some issues with iPads using the Apple Configurator and a Bretford Cart. I submitted this to my lovely Apple account team, however they have not acknowledged or replied to me. I could really use some help with this one!! PLEASE
I have a deployment of about 1000 iPads. The initial deployment is over but we collect them and redeploy them.
Here is what I do with the cart.
Load iPads in to it.
Update to the latest iOS (if approved internally).
Restore a backup of an iPad configured with customized wallpaper.
Install a profile that contains a webclip to our MDM install.
The devices ARE not supervised, nor do I want to supervise them in any way. We have an MDM and do not need or want device supervision.
This used to work for me with minor issues.
Now I’m having some problems.
In particular:
On some devices, I no longer get the choice to select “Next” at choose a Network connection. Sometimes I get it and it allows me to go to choose “Continue without Wifi” and I’m good to go. Sometimes I don’t have this choice and that is an issue. Why is this happening? (Incidentally, when I erase all content and settings of a device that HAS allowed me to choose Next and Continue without Wifi, when it is restored, the option is no longer there.)
After the update and backup is restored, I have to go through the Hello and Welcome screens before I can install a profile. Why?
When I install profiles, it allows me to only install 1 profile at a time. This does not work for me. Why did this change in Apple Configurator?
What used to be a fairly simple process is now becoming kind of a pain. I’ve searched Apple forums and it seems others are having the same issues. Are you able to help or give advice on a better way to do this?
I have about 1000 iPads deployed and need to find the smoothest way to go about doing this.
Thank you for any help or advice.Yes, an MDM is your best bet. I am able to get iMovie free because I purchased the iPad after a certain date. How do I load that app in apple configurator to image iPads with the software. All of the iPads are elgible for the the free version.
Thanks,Apple replied -
You need to have redemption store codes generated for these iPads that were purchased that are eligible for the free Apps (like iMovie). To request this, please goto <https://ssl.apple.com/support/itunes/vpp-edu/> and submit this request, they should be able to provide you the necessary codes for you to add to Configurator.
So, I will be sending the serial numbers to the link above. As the iPads are elgible for free iMovie, etc. they will give me the codes (at no cost) to install on my elgible iPads. Yipee!!!!
I can already download the apps (at no cost) individually but doesn't work with managed iPads using apple configurator. -
Hi, having some annoying trouble with trying to download and install APPLE CONFIGURATOR
Already have a VPP account and Apple ID which is linked to the VPP account.
All i want to do is download Apple configurator, that's all.
So I go to the APP STORE where it tells me to sign in before I download, once I sign in it tell me "Your apple UD can't be Used in This Store" Due to the apple ID being associated with a VPP account"
So i choose the option "Go to VPP for Education"
I then 'placed an order' for Apple Configurator via the VPP portal... Now what!?
When I go to purchase history this is what I get

HT5188 Apple Configurator and Apple ID
I recently downloaded Apple Configurator and upon setup, I entered an apple ID. Now I was told that was the incorrect Apple ID for the VPP. How do I change the apple ID In Configurator?
Unfortunately, the menu option that was available in earlier versions of Apple Configurator is no longer available But here's how I've been doing it using the latest Apple Configurator 1.1.2.
First, go into iTunes and authorize with an Apple ID (iTunes -> Store -> Authroize this computer). It doesn't have to be a VPP Apple ID…just an ordinary Apple ID used to associate with the app. Then download the app(s). They will go to ~/Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications. These apps will be linked to the Apple ID you authorized in iTunes. Next go into Apple Configurator and add the apps on the Prepare -> Apps screen. When you try to add the app in AC (clicking on the "+" at the bottom of the screen), you should be prompted to enter an Apple ID and password (see screenshot below).
It will say that "This Apple ID will be used to redeem VPP codes…" It is NOT the Apple ID used to purchase the VPP codes… The VPP codes can be redeemed by any Apple ID.
You must enter the same Apple ID and password that you used to download the app in iTunes, and you should be good to go.
Hope this helps!!

Apple configurator and App not authorized
Today was my first day putting paid apps in. I have 4 different paid apps, and 3 codes through VPP for each of the apps.
> The first one I did went fine. All three iPads have all have that app. Now, the last 3 apps only went onto 2 of the 3 iPads. It is telling me with a little yellow triangle "App not authorized." When I click on the number and open the screen where you import the spread sheet with codes I see this "This code has already been used. Each code may only be used once." However it is not linked to a device like the other three.
> Have you run into this? Any suggestions on what I should do?+1 for what bcpoole said. Redownload the spreadsheet and reimport into Configurator.
Also you need to be sure to authorize iTunes on the sync computer with the same Apple ID that you are using in Configurator. Here's how I've been doing it using Apple Configurator 1.1.2.
First, go into iTunes and authorize with an Apple ID (Store -> Authroize this computer). Download the app(s). They will go to ~/Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications. Then go into Apple Configurator and add the apps on the Prepare -> Apps screen. When you try to add the app in AC (clicking on the "+" at the bottom of the screen), you should be prompted to enter an Apple ID and password. Use the same Apple ID and password that you used to download the app in iTunes.
Hope this helps!!
