Link to Developer forums missing

I have previously posted topics in 'Developer Forums -> Software Development 101', but am unable to locate a link to the Developer Forums from the Discussions page. In order to get back to the developer forums I must click 'My Posts' on the side bar. Am I missing something?

The only way to get to the Developer Forums group is via the top-leve Mac OS X Technologies forum: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=162

  • Suggestion - Cross links in the Developer Forums

Hi - this is a suggestion for a trivial modification to the Developer forums.
I regularly read and contribute to the "Developer" and "Software Development 101" forums; looking at the names of the other contributors, I'm not the only one. It would be really helpful if there were a direct cross link from the Developer to the Software Development 101 forum, and another back from SD101 to the Developer forum. This would avoid having to navigate up a level and navigate downwards again.
Alternatively, the SD101 forum could be moved back as a sub-forum of the Developer forum, as was the case when SD101 was first created.
    Thanks for considering this.

    Hello Dave,
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
I personally experienced this problem. We already reported this to our web admin. Thanks for letting us know.

  • Missing history in ABAP Development forum

When I look at the main page of the ABAP Development forum, I only see two pages of history. When I look at a sub-forum, I see lots of pages. Is it just me? (I have set my display to 50 items per page.)
Just noticed - same behavior here in Community Discussions.

For me it is still only 4 pages (I'm on 25 per page) in "Community Discussions". However in the sub forums e.g. "Suggestions and Comments" I can browse to older pages, as opposed to my previous statement.
It's not really a problem from my point of view, as the response time seems to be slightly better.

  • Code Formatting Instructions for Developer Forums

Although this topic only applies to the two Developer forums, the need for some upfront code formatting instructions in those forums is desperate. There may be hundreds of threads which include one or more messages on this subject. In my case alone, I've posted at least a dozen messages each containing these three lines:
    Paste your code here.
Of course a quick search of either Dev forum on the keys +code formatting+ will find the above right away, but those who need help the most don't know code requires special formatting so won't be making that search. For the same reason, neither the excellent instructions in the User Tips Library nor the pertinent threads in this forum are likely to be discovered before they're needed. The +Help & Terms of Use+ FAQ might seem to be a good place for the instructions, but this has been proposed so many times before I'm sure it will never happen. The need is confined to the Dev forums afterall.
I think the solution would be a permanent post (similar to +How to Post a new Topic+ in this forum) at the top of both Dev forums. I don't think most developers want to see instructions on any other topic at the top of the forums, but a brief note titled +How to Post Code+ might make everyone's life easier.
Assuming most of the other developers agree, how could we make this happen?

Thanks so much for helping with this, Nubz!
Joerg's instructions are excellent. I refer to them often and I've had them bookmarked since I found Apple Discussions last year. The new Code section is great!! Very clear!
Now we just need to find a way to get users to that page. Our problem has never been with users who are interested enough in Apple Discussions to visit the Tips Library. The unformatted code is coming from first-time users--not necessarily novice coders, but programmers of all skill levels who aren't coming here to learn about the forums or relate to the community. These folks are focused on their current project, may have found no answers anywhere else, and arrive here with tunnel vision. Often there's a language problem as well.
The newly arrived OP will often start the thread with a page of unformatted code. Those of us with eyes used to filling in the missing brackets, indentation etc. can sometimes decypher the mess, but usually we need to give formatting instructions and ask the OP to repost. The frequency of this scenario has been increasing. Lately I've been posting those instructions almost once every day.
Of course that's a good sign! We've been giving good service down there and the number of newcomers seems to be reflecting that. A big percentage have turned into regulars, so I think we have a very healthy forum. It's just the formatting cycle gets old, and the time and bytes add up too.
    My suggestion is this:
One yellow moderator announcement that stays in the first position on the topic page for both dev forums. The subject line is:
To format code: Paste your code here
The user doesn't even need to open the message. Only developers will see this. No change to the page header is needed. If the user does open the message, a link will be provided to Joerg's tips.

  • It seems the safari 5 update broke firefox access to apple developer forums

I can't seem to access the "Apple Developer Forums" link on the page: http://developer.apple.com/iphone/index.action
I had been accessing this fine through firefox, but after I did the safari 5 update last night, it seems I can only use safari 5 to get access. Does anyone know what the story is?
I get a 404 I think because it can't find an error doc to handle the get issue:
    +Request Entity Too Large+
    +The requested resource+
    /iphone/discussionForum.action
+does not allow request data with GET requests, or the amount of data provided in the request exceeds the capacity limit.+
+Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.+
    +Apache/2.2.9 (Unix) PHP/5.2.6 mod_jk/1.2.25 mod_perl/2.0.2 Perl/v5.8.8 Server at developer.apple.com Port 80+

    It has been fixed.

  • Why doesn't the Discussions index link to Developer Discussions?

    I found it confusing that
    Apple.com > Support > Discussions
    http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa?categoryID=1
    had no link to:
    Apple.com > Support > Discussions > Developer Forums > Developer
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=727&start=0
    Could one be added?

    it does through http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=162

    Mel,
Oracle Forms 10g is 9.0.4 internally. It is shipped with Oracle Application Server 10g and Oracle Developer Suite 10g (9.0.4). To develop and test Forms applications you need the Forms Developer Suite. For runtime during production you need Oracle Application Server.
Oracle Application Server 10.1.2.0.0 is a Java, BI and and Portal edition. Forms and Reports will be in 10.1.2.0.2, aka 10g R2, which is not out yet. Components in this stack are the "real" version 10.
You will be able to use Oracle9i database with Forms 10.1.2. To avoid conflicts, make sure the developer software gets installed in its own Oracle Home so, not to interfere with database files.

  • Request for iPhone developer forum

There has been a recent influx of new iPhone developers in the developer forums. They often don't identify their problem as being specific to the iPhone. You have to look at what they are talking about and see that it is all iPhone stuff. Apparently the iPhone SDK is significantly different enough that answers to basic questions for MacOS X development are not correct for the iPhone SDK.
If there were an iPhone SDK forum they might be more inclined to put iPhone-specific questions in there.

I completely agree with the previous sentiments for an iPhone developer forum. Why?
I am part of the problem. I have come into the Apple development process "solely" to work on the iPhone. I know nothing about Mac OS X. Because of that I was astounded that the iPhone documentation was not "iPhone" but rather Xcode documentation. Yes I understand that there is a great deal of overlap BUT from my point of view it looks as though Apple was extremely lazy in just dumping all of their code and documentation on the iPhone developer. They need about 5 editors to weed out what is and is not iPhone. Just my two cents.

  • Links on the forum are broken

Don't know if anyone else has noticed, but links on the forum seem to be broken.
    e.g. Google
Is this some user specific setting that I've accidentally activated, or has the forum lost some functionality?

It just seems like Richard is not using the right way to embed a URL in the forum which is something like this:
    Oracle UI Shell Functional Pattern
basically [ then url= and here the url then ] the some text and then a closing tag which is [ followed by / and url and ]

  • External links in these forum posts

    Hi,
Is it possible to ensure external links in the forum posts open in new windows or tabs (according to the users browser settings).
Navigating away from the forum and then navigating back to read more of a post is a bit of a pain.
    Thanks
    Phil

nope, unless someone add target="blank" to the links they post.

  • How to develop forums using J2SE

How can we develop forums using J2SE technology.

Take a look at the question. It does very muchlook
like a textbook question. I don't think that theOP
will implement a forum without JEE.Neither do I. Nor do I think he will implement it
    with JEE.
    I agree!
By the way, you could do it all using sockets, not
even HTTP requests. Serialization might actually be
quite efficient - less overhead. as compared to HTML.The ReneForumProtocol? And of course he'll build the client for this as nothing but the best MVC Swing app you ever saw.
