Link to InDesign

Hi all,
Does InDesign link to Elements as it does to Photoshop? in other words, can you right-click a graphic in InDesign and directly open the original file in Elements as you can with Photoshop?
Thanks.

Hi Ross
  I’m not sure it’s possible as Adobe In Design has a CMYK workflow and PSE doesn’t support CMYK. Obviously you could use RGB images and graphics and edit them in PSE and convert in ID but I don’t think you will get the integration you need.
You will possibly find more help on the ID forum.

    Set to numbering, set each paragraph style to the corresponding level. For each level add in the numbering field the placeholder for the same level, in the second and third level set the placeholder and the dot before the actual level for the first and the second level (this only for the third level of course).
    It is also a goot idea to create and select a list which can be done in the same dialog. It would work without a list but it is better to use a list to not get numbering problems with ohter numbered lists in the document.
    Search Google for terms like "multi-level automatic numbering in indesign" without quotes.

  • Getting errors while updating links in Indesign document using javascript

    Hi,
    We are updating the links in InDesign document using javascript. After running the script, we are getting the below errors in Adobe InDesign CC debug.
    When closing the document for first time we are getting the below mentioned errors,

  • Possible? SQL table link to InDesign Table

    My company uses indesign for all of our work instructions. We have a database of our bill of materials - we export data from this database to excel, and dump that table into indesign. my question is - is there a way to link an indesign table directly to SQL, or if I set up a  data connection in the Excel table, will it update dynamically when the indesign (or exported PDF) file is opened?

    cgpl_project contains the information you are looking for for the promotion guid.  Also you can link the crm_mktpl_attr.responsible to the but000 table on partner_guid to get the Employee Responsible name.

  • Smart collection of image files linked to InDesign documents?

    I would like to create a Smart Collection that finds all of the image files linked to InDesign documents in a specific folder.
    I am the yearbook advisor at school and I need to easily find all of the images that have been placed so that we don't reuse images by mistake.
    I have no scripting experience, so I can't create something myself, and I haven't been able to find anything that does such a thing.
    Many yearbook design software programs do offer something like this - indicating that an image has been used previously.
    I guess it would need to look at the metadata of the InDesign Files for the Linked Files and then pit all of the files found there into a Smart Collection.  Ideally, I would be able to further limit it by file type. ANd to not include Master pages if so desired (although that would just be a bonus!)
    I greatly appreciate any assistance anyone can give.
    Thanks!

    I'd be glad to give it a shot, even though I'm a beginner (and I am afraid I am out of my depth), but i'm missing something obvious because I could download and install the script, but if I try to open it to edit it, I just get gobbeldygook.  Any chance you could paste the script here?
    Again, I really appreciate your help.

  • Can links from InDesign or InCopy Articles use non-file: URLs?

    I am trying to determine if InDesign CS6 or newer provides any way for links to be to URLs that are not file: URLs. For example, I am using a CMS that provides HTTP access to images. I would like to do something like:
            <Link
              Self="uf3"
              AssetURL="$ID/"
              AssetID="$ID/"
              LinkResourceURI="htp://myrepository.com/resource/binary/myimage.jpg"
           />
    My experiments suggest that this will not work but I'm hoping I've overlooked something.
    Another wrinkle is authentication: for access to the CMS the URLs need to be authenticated, which means InDesign would need to get then authentication information on at least first resolution.
    Is there a way to do this out of the box? If not, what would be required in terms of plugin implementation or library deployment to enable it? Back in CS3 days we were able to use some unsupported libraries to get URL resolution working but it would be nice if it worked out of the box.
    Thanks,
    Eliot

    As far as I know there is nothing new in CS5 (or CS4 for that matter) regarding which styles are retained when exporting frames to InCopy. If you're exporting an individual story (text frame) from ID to IC, the only styles in that ICML file will be the ones used by the text in the story. If there's no text in the story -- you're exporting an empty frame -- then the ICML file won't have any styles.
    It's been this way as long as I can remember.
    What you need to do in InDesign is keep some fake text in the text frame to which you've applied the styles you want the InCopy users to use. Export that, then in InCopy, open it up, delete the text, and the styles will remain. Now you can save it as an actual InCopy template file (ICTD? something like that) from the Save As menu, and when IC users open it, it'll create an untitled, empty copy of the starter InCopy document with all the styles.
    In a non-Woodwing workflow, InCopy users open the actual INDD file and so have access to all the styles, even if the story frame they want to work on in that layout is initially empty. Or, they can import (Load) all the styles from an InDesign doc into their standalone InCopy file from the InCopy Paragraph Style panel menu (Load All Styles).Not sure if you can do the latter w/Woodwing.
    I was pretty sure that Woodwing had a different way of creating InCopy templates, something like InCopy article templates? Not sure.

  • Missing Links in InDesign CS3

    We are using InDesign CS3 and the program itself works good, the problem I'm having is all our data is located on a server and I have replaced the server with a new one, now when we open a document it has missing links and it takes forever searching for \\oldserver\pictures before popping up missing links where you then point it to \\newserver\pictures. My question is why does InDesign use the unc path and not mapped drive letters? Is there a way to fix this for future? Also is there anyway to fix previous short a fixing each and ever missing link? I see CS4 has the option to check links or not but I don't see any options for CS3. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tony

    I'm not sure what that has to do with it? when opening up a documents it tries to resolve picture links the link pointing to \\oldserver\pictures (that server is no longer running) everything has been moved to \\newserver\pictures when the document finally opens you manually fix the links to point to new server save document then it opens fine the next time. I would rather have the links point to P:\Pictures as apposed to the unc path, the I wouldn't have this issue.

  • Copying images from a server linked to InDesign document?

    I have a issue where I have images on a windows server in a "hold folder", when I finish with my images I move them to a "done folder" on the same volume. If my InDesign 5.5 document(mac) is open those images move to the "done folder", but also leave a ghost file with the same name with 0k. InDesign still see these file as if they are still in the "hold folder". I'm thinking that InDesign has a hold or is accessing the image links when its being copied and locking the image file. How often does InDesign check for modified links?

    Links in ID use absolute paths. If the time stamp or file size is different from what is stored in the file for each link it would be condidered modified. If the file is no longer at that location it would be listed as missing. When you open a file ID checks the links (if your prefs are set to do so) and reports modified links and missing links. If a link is missing in the specified location, ID will also search the folder where the .indd file is stored and any subfolders. Having a 0byte file at the old location would be a problem.
    The best way to handle this is probably to use File > Package to move copies of everything to the new location. ID updates the links at the same time. You can then delete the original files to avoid duplication.

  • Missing links in Indesign CS6!

    Good morning!
    Yesterday, my workmate and I did a .indb file in Indesign CS6. That .indb (book) is made of several .indd files (documents).
    So far so good. Then, after it was ready, we linked all images (using the Links panel) to each .indd and then we saved it.
    Today, I've tried to move those documents to my computer.
    However, the Links panel now shows many missing links in the images, according to the image below:
         I can't understand how Indesign CS6 missed links in this case, because we have already linked all images to each document.
         Please, I would like to learn more about this process of linking images to documents in Indesign.

    inDesign links documents via a file path.
    It doesn't actually add the image itself to the document, but rather relays a link to the where file resides on the hard drive.
    It then draws a representation of that image in the layout using a proxy thumbnail.
    So when it's linked it is actually looking at a file path, say something like
    If I move that file to a computer where the my documents folder has a different name say "C:\MyDocuments\Eugene\Images\Eugene1.png"
    "C:\MyDocuments\Marcelo\"
    Then when I open the file on Marcelo's computer the link would still be
    "C:\MyDocuments\Eugene\Images\Eugene1.png"
    I need to redirect the link to go to
    "C:\MyDocuments\Marcelo\Images\Eugene1.png"
    As stated above you should use
    File>Package
    Zip the folders the computer generates - and then send them to a new computer.
    Unzip and work on the file.

  • Return PDF page number from the name of the link in InDesign CS4 JS

    Hi, I need to return pdf page number of the linked file in InDesign.Here what I have so far, but my FilePath comes back undefined, and I am not sure if pageNmuber line would work:
        var myArtBack = app.activeDocument.pages[1].rectangles[0].graphics[0];
        var myArtBackName = myArtBack.itemLink.name;
        var myBackFilePath = myArtBackName.filePath;
        var myPageNumber  = myBackFilePath.PDFAttribute.pageNumber;
    Your help is highly appreciated.
    Yulia

    Your first problem is:
    var myBackFilePath = myArtBackName.filePath;
    That should be:
    var myBackFilePath = myArtBack.itemLink.filePath;
    What you should have done is something like:
    var myLink = myArtBack.itemLink;
    var myPageNumber = myLink.parent.pdfAttributes.pageNumber;
    Maybe you need the file path for some other purpose, but that's not the route to information about the PDF graphic (the parent of the link) which has the pdfAttributes property -- property names always start with a lowercase letter.

  • [Req.] script for updating links in Indesign using spotlight

    hi,
    i've got a challange, can somebody please help me?
    I'm a graphic designer from holland and I work with lots of Indesign documents
    whose links are missing because they are moved, so they are somewhere on our server.
    I have several scripts to relink missing links but they are slow,
    because they search every directory and every subdirectory. This takes a while.
    The search engine from apple, spotlight, is much much faster.
    So I think i have this brilliant idea, i thought of the following:
    I select one missing link in the linkpanel in Indesign.
    Then I start the script.
    The path of the missing link is copied and trimmed to just the name of the file
    The filename is then copied to the clipboard.
    The script then opens the dialog window to relink the missing link.
    There the name of the picture is pasted in the spotlight search engine.
    There the script stops.
    Click on the correct file (if there are more choises) and the relink is made.
    I think this way of relinking can be much faster.
    And you can also work with pre-defined clever windows (to limit the results), for example:
    - one witch only shows jpg
    - one witch only shows tiff
    - one witch only shows pdf
    I know a tiny little bit of scripting, but this one I cant figure out yet.
    Can somebody give me a help please?
    Kind regards, Eric

    repeat with i from 1 to count of PathToAllFiles
                       set theItem to (item i of PathToAllFiles)
                       if button returned of (display dialog theItem with title "Relink this file?" buttons {"OK", "Cancel", "Go on"}) is "OK" then
                                                tell application "Adobe InDesign CS3"
                                                                         relink (item link of (item 1 of all graphics of (item 1 of selection))) to POSIX file theItem
                                                end tell
                       end if
    end repeat
    set AppleScript's text item delimiters to tid
    on cleanList(fileName, listOfFilePaths)
                       set myCleanList to {}
                       set AppleScript's text item delimiters to "/"
                       repeat with p from 1 to count of listOfFilePaths
                                                set aName to (text item -1 of (item p of listOfFilePaths))
                                                if aName is equal to fileName then set end of myCleanList to (item p of listOfFilePaths)

                       return myCleanList

  • Incorrect image links in InDesign CC

    I have been using InDesign for years and this is a first. I am running InDesign CC on an older Mac Pro running OSX lion 10.7.5 as I am no longer able to upgrade operating system on this machine. To make a long story short, I have incorrect images being placed in place of what was once correct. For example, I had a linked file which had a file name of 7136.psd and I believe it was after packaging that the file then changed to a completely different file name and image of "1546.psd". While I can at least see the possibility of similar filenames being misinterpreted by InDesign, this behavior seems odd. The document I am working on is quite large and image heavy, so I now have to go through and check every single image which will be quite time consuming. Anyone ever have this issue? If so, any fixes?

    If you already have JPEG images, it buys you absolutely nothing to convert them to TIFF or PSD files for placement into InDesign. Whatever lossiness that would occur already happened by creating JPEG in the first place. Note that this doesn't mean that JPEG is a poor choice, but that it doesn't improve anything to convert the file to a lossless format unless you are planning to subsequently edit the file.
    No, there is no good reason to convert your RGB images to CMYK before placing the image into InDesign. InDesign can optionally convert RGB imagery to whatever CMYK color space you need for printing. However, the most reasonable and reliable place for any RGB to CMYK (or even LAB to CMYK) conversion to take place is at the RIP itself since it is only at that stage of the print production process that you definitively know what the output CMYK color space really is.
    If you received any “error messages” from InDesign in the past about RGB images being placed, it was likely due to having activated an InDesign profile to check for such imagery. Such a check is not on by default.

  • Update of links in Indesign CS6 when changing asset via drive

    Hi,
    i am having an issue regarding the integration of Adobe AEM with InDesign CS6 via Drive:
    I have a indd document that has a link to an image, both are stored on a Adobe AEM 5.6.1 server and accessed via Adobe Drive 5.0.2.
    Now i tested the use case that the asset is changed and replaced on the AEM instance. I expect that InDesign tells me that the link has updated when I am opening the file the next time and the new asset is shown.
    Unfortunatly this expectation occurs very unreliably and I managed to update the image only a few times.
    However, if i link to an image on my local hard drive and i change it, InDesign reacts immediatly. So i think that Adobe Drive is the responsible part.
    So my question is: does anyone have the same experience when integrating InDesign with AEM via Drive and does anyone know a best practise to reliably update images when the target of a link has changed?
    Best regards,
    Holger

    While writing I made a mistake... It is true I could become aware of the Scorpio incompatibility.
    I also tried the same identical procedure with a Seagate one. This disk and the same procedure was performed by some people I know on many MacBookPro Mid-2010 and everything was OK.
    We do not understand why this problenm occurs.
    Furthermore, If I installed the system on the broken HDD (that works, but sometimes it fails so badly and makes the system experience kernel panic) I could boot from it.
    I guess it is because of the **** Apple FIrmware written on the label.
    Is it possible that I cannot manage to boot from my new HDD because it has not a "special" feature on it that makes it compatible with apple??? Why making things so **** difficult my god a closer world like Apple one is impossible to imagine.
    However Shootist007 thanks for your message, but given what I said I do not think is a cable problem.

  • How to link the InDesign CS5 file to the XML file?

    We are putting together a product catalog.
    The following link will give you the template indesign file, the xml file and the pdf of the sample spreads.

    Once we want to tie the xml to the indesign, what is the procedure?

    Thank you.

    Sharda,
    Was this ever published using XML? It doesn't appear so to me. It looks like a lot of manual layout (a reflected layout) and doesn't use paragraph styles and few character styles (even though there seem to be a lot of them created.
    Was this at one time a datamerge versus an XML job?

  • Link to InDesign CS3 Trial?

    Hi, I am trying to locate the InDesign CS3 trial download. Does anyone know where to find it? All the CS3 links I've found take me to the CS4 page where there does not seem to be a trial available yet.

    I looked the other day myself, and it appears that the CS3 trials have been removed from the website. You used to be able to find them on the updates pages, but no more.

  • Data Link with InDesign

    I am a new InDesign user and am in the process of converting files from Quark and PowerPoint. Most of these pages are heavy in numbers, as I work in finance. Is there a way to link InDesign files to Excel spreadsheets and have them automatically update? Is that the best way? I am working with CS4 and on a PC. Thanks for any help.

    In your preferences, enable create link when placing text and

    Place the Excel file. Note: you'll either need to use table styles or do
    all of the formatting Excel for this to work seemlessly.
