Link to other project
Hi!
I am a Captivate beginner. I am trying to link to another project from a button. I selected:
If user clicks on button:
On Success - Open other project
Project - (Name of project)
When I try to project it to test it out, I get the following message: "The project (Name of project).htm, (Name of project).swf is launched at this point but is unavailable from this preview."
What am I doing wrong? Thank you for your help!!!!
Hi there
You aren't doing anything wrong. You are testing from a Preview. The message is telling you that you will need to Publish it to see it in action.

Link to other project - CAPS error
Using Captivate 3 and publishing as htm/swf files
I have created a menu - each button links to another Captivate project (that is a .cp file)
One of the 5 buttons was linked to Create_send_email.cp.
To publish in our LMS I renamed the file create_send_email.cp. (It prefers all lower case)
Captivate won't allow me to change the link.
Every time I delete the Create_send_email Project, and browse to select the create_send_email.cp project it simple reinstates the upper case C.
Btw I havbe browsed the KBase and the forums... and I gether there is an issue with linking to other projects. Also read about the cache in Captivate 5 but perhaps not relevant here??
ThanksThis error appears have to sorted itself after I republished everything - perhaps the upper case C displayed in the Button properties was removed by the publish process.

Using Captivate 4: Link to other project is not working
hi,
I am using Captivate4. I want to give action to the click button to open other project, but it is not working. What should I do, any specific settings, so that it start working.
Thanks in advance.
LuckyHi again
Ideally, yes. You typically see the best and most predictable result when linking like to like. If you are willing to live with the idiosyncracies of mixing output formats, you are also free to link EXE to SWF or Vice Versa.

Updating projects with activities linked to other projects.
Im kind of new at this. I am working on a project with several contracts. i am thinking of setting up each contract as a separate project in an EPS and linking the milestones in all the projects to create a master schedule. On a weekly basis i recieve schedule updates from the contractors. What im wondering is if there is a way i can copy the new schedule in with all the updates without having to re-link all the activities everytime I get an updated schedule? also is this the best way to create a master schedule?
*794503,*
It sounds like your sub projects (contracts) are in sort of a design on the go mode?
To make things a little more manageable I would suggest that you establish a set of standard start and finish milestones for each project in order for you to be able to ensure that your master project major milestones (hopefully integrated with your cost or earned value milestones) remain logically tied to those designated sub project milestones.
With that said, I would just paste the new edition of each contract's schedule into their respective projects. I would make an export (.XER) backup before pasting any new data. It's better to be safe than sorry!
Be mindful of the fact that you probably need to make sure that the logic ties gets pasted by not clicking the box (Relationships / Only between copied activities) on the "Copy Act. Options" dialog box. Otherwise, you'll have to manually tie all of the logic again. A royal pain in the "A" double "S"!!
**Use a copy of the latest project/contract schedule update and as a baseline. Format your bars to also display that baseline schedule on row #2. Also insert a schedule variance column to display date changes between your original vs. newly updated schedule. For analysis of changes.....maybe build a new layout and filter to only display those act's that have major date changes (sched. variances)?
**Another tool to use after the fact would be *"Claim Digger"* in order to analyze the details of what changes were made with each new schedule update.
There is no way to eliminate all of the manual work. :( Some manual verification will always have to be performed.
It would be very smart to get a good grip on how you'll handle these changes early in the project before the situation gets out of hand.
For every "schedule change" made to your schedule the chance of a scheduling error increases. So there you go.
Good luck and let me know how it turns out. -
Cprojects and object links to other project phases
Hi experts,
Have anyone of you some ideas how to creating a object link to another phase in another project? Are there possibilites for enhancing the the type of objects link via a BAPI or something in cProjects 4.0?
Thanks, CamillaHi Camella,
You can try this in IMG activity
"Make Settings for the Linked SAP Objects". But you need to try copy an existing entry and change relevant tables parameters
I have done this for R/3 Transaction in cProjects 4.0 + ECC 6.0 and Iam sure it will work for Project Phase also
Pls,let me know the version you are trying this feature

Open Other Project Feature Follow up ?
I just posted a question in regards to "Open Other Project"
button giving me inconsistent results. I was reading other posts to
try to find an answer when something I read made me question
myself.
When I am setting "Open Other Project" as an option, I
actually typed the name of the file that I want to link to. For
instance I type Interview. I do not add .exe to the end of the file
or .cp. Okay, I just thought about trying to select the exe file
from the ...button but realized that it would only allow me to
connect to a .cp file. Hmmmmm.
So, my question is - did I mess up by typing the name of my
file with no extension? Should I actually be linking to another .cp
file? Since these all need to be executables, will I have issues
with the Interface searching for .cp file instead of an .exe?
Hope this makes some kind of sense to someone.
Thanks,
KimThanks for the response Rick. Did you happen to see my other
post about my exe files not closing when they open another project?
It is causing me some MAJOR issues. Basically if the interface
doesn't close, then the file that it is trying to switch to takes a
very long time to open and could cause the user to think they need
to click on the button again which as you can imagine creates an
even bigger issue. Any thoughts? -

Importing project in other project
Hi all.
i am using captivate some days now but i am thrilled with
what i can do with it.
Since i am newbbie yet ,allow me to ask my questions and
forgive me if they are stupid please...
I have create a couple of small projects with captivate and
now i want to bind them all under one bigger project with a menu to
select the smaller projects e.t.c.
In the main menu i have buttons which if clicked are set to
option: "open other project"
For each button i have choose one of the smaller projects to
open when a button is clicked.
But when i click a button internet explorer opens ???????
Well, then ,why it says open another project?
Then i thought that i can import the smaller projects instead
of loading them.
With this method when i import the smaller projects (which do
have groups) they dont import as they are (groups e.t.c.) instead
the slides are imported indepedently and i have to make the groups
again from scratch ,which is very inconvinient because there are
many groups.
So the question is :
If i have small projects and i want to bind them all under a
bigger project, which is the best method to follow?
(Please write your advice.General directions will be
sufficient and as a matter of fact i i will be quite happy even
with such)
Thank you 4 reading this and excuse my lame english.

Problems with "Open other project" in menu builder
Hi everyone,
I have a series of projects that I want to link together
using the menu builder of the "Skin Editor" dialog.
I create my menu items, and for each item choose "Open other
project" in the "On click" dropdown. I then choose the project that
I want the menu item to open. For this example, lets say I chose a
project named "Viewing_Patients"
However, when I publish the project, run it, and then use the
menu to open the next project, it just opens up a browser window
trying to access the URL "
http://Viewing_Patients.htm/
Why is that?
To check my sanity, I created a Click Box in one of the
project's slide where I chose the exact same configuration - "Open
other project" for the "On success" dropdown, and the
"Viewing_Patients" project as the project to open when the box is
clicked.
And this works fine (it opens the "Viewing_Patients" project)
Why is my menu failing but not my click box?
Thanks very much in advance for any help!
- eriiki - tubbs -Hello Slothrop206,
Try the following steps:
1) Change your Action to be "Open URL or file"
2) Key in the relative URL to the movie you are attempting to
link. If it is in the same directory, simply key in the file name
of the .swf you are attempting to load.
3) Publish and test.

Open Other Project - Relative Path
I hate to keep asking this question ... but has anyone come up with a workable solution for opening another project in Captivate 4 using a relative path? I see this discussion starting and stopping in various places ... but there never seems to be an answer that works. I can't quite understand why Adobe took this functionality out of this version ... as it has made the product almost useless to me. I need to be able to link from one project to another somehow, and I don't know what the absolute path is going to be when I am creating the training.
I don't know where else to turn for help on this. Anyone?
Thanks.

Open other Project: New, Parent, Top
To reduce the amount of slides in my project, I was thinking
of creating a kind of branching action not using Menu Builder, but
rather using "Open other Project". My goal is to have a page where
you click one of 4 buttons that will each take you to a separate
project. Let’s say one button is for a logon process,
selecting this button will open up the logon process project, play
it & then return to the page that has the original 4 buttons on
it. So with this, I have a couple questions. Is my goal feasible?
What are the differences between the Current, New, Parent, Top
options? Any suggestions on how I can get this to work?
Thanks!Hi B Ellefson
You asked what the differences were between Current, New,
Parent and Top.
These options control the way links behave. Primarily, when
you output to .SWF format. They really have little meaning if you
are outputting to .EXE format.
Let's assume you are inserting a Button or Click Box object
that is programmed to visit
http://www.google.com when clicked
upon by your user.
Current: The google page would totally replace the Captivate
movie the link was clicked from.
New: The google page would open in a new browser instance.
Parent and Top: These two options would only ever be used if
you were displaying your Captivate movie from inside a frameset. As
a result, these options are seldom (if ever) used.
Hopefully this helps a bit... Rick -
Hi,
have a project with 4 movies they are linked with open other project button
but in the executable files when I jump from one project to other there is a close up before open the other project.
how can I resolve this?
jvHi there
It's just the way things work with EXE files. The thing is, an EXE will temporarily install a Flash Player, then play the movie. Then close as the next EXE opens. Unfortunately there is no way for the EXE to remain open and simply load in the content from the new exe into its window because the new EXE is treated as a new instance.
You might consider suggesting this as an enhancement to the development team. Maybe the Captivate developers can construct a way for things to work differently in a future version.

Open Other Project not closing original file
Hello All,
I have a total of 55 exe files that are all accessed through
one captivate file called "Interface". I am experiencing some
inconsistent errors with the "Open other project" feature when
testing this on a computer other than my own. Basically, a user
will be in the interface file and click on a course they would like
to take. Let's say for example, they choose to take an interviewing
course. When they click Interviewing, the interface disappears and
they see the desktop or sometimes a white screen while Interview is
being opened. Sometimes, the course never shows up so I use my
CTL+Alt+Delete/Task Manager to view what has happened and I am
finding that Interface and Interview are both open and are
minimized on my toolbar. If the user doesn't use CTL+ALT Delete,
they would never even know their course opened because for some
reason they can only see a white screen. Ideally, I would like the
Interface file to close down as soon as the user clicks on another
course. I have it set to "Open Other Project" and selected Current
but still it is keeping the Interface open (sometimes). Again, the
errors are pretty inconsistent. One day it works perfectly and the
next day I am getting what I described above. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
KimHi Kim
It's common that the EXE format doesn't close when opening
another project. So here's something you may wish to try. Button
and Click Box objects normally allow the slide to continue playing
when clicked by the user. Assuming all of them are identically
timed for the pause, you might simply allow a click on any of them
to allow the project to continue playing. Then configure the end
action to be that of closing the project.
My thought here is that perhaps a click on the object (Click
Box or Button) will cause the project to continue briefly, then
terminate. This should close it down. Then at the end of the
projects you linked to, have their end action to be to open the
menu back up. Then have them close down.
Hopefully that makes a bit of sense.

"Open other project" always fails
Hello all,
I have been trying to figure out how to get the project end
option "Open other project" to work.
I am using two small SWFS, linking one to the other, but at
the end of the first project I get the "Page cannot be displayed"
message despite the fact the files are stored on a public server
with no access restrictions.
Can anyone explain and/or point me to an explanation?
The preocess seems straightforward. what am I missing?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Best,
BrettHello Slothrop206,
Try the following steps:
1) Change your Action to be "Open URL or file"
2) Key in the relative URL to the movie you are attempting to
link. If it is in the same directory, simply key in the file name
of the .swf you are attempting to load.
3) Publish and test.

Do we need to merge in order to link from one project to another
We are working on setting up a new webhelp system using RH 7.
The application for which we are writing incorporates numerous
large "modules," each of which we expect to have its own help
project containing 100-200 topics (page-level, context-sensitive
help).
Each help project will reside in its own folder. All of the
help project folders will, in turn, reside in one main "Online
Help" folder.
Is there a way to link from a topic in one project to a topic
in another project *without* merging the projects? Our aim is to
re-use information by creating common topics (such as "Using the
XYZ Product Toolbars" or "Options for Saving Your Data"), storing
them in *one* project only, and then linking to these common topics
from other the other projects as needed.
In HTML help you can do this. But I don't know about WebHelp.
I was looking at the Snippets feature, but I'm not sure that
accomplishes what we want. Our main concern is to maintain common
topics in one place only and not have to worry about multiple
copies of topics floating around.
Thanks very much for any assistance with this.Snippets reside within a project so the nearest you would get
is maintaining them in one project, importing them and reimporting
whenever you make a change.
To create links to topics in other projects without importing
I think the only way to do it would be to manually enter the
relative path as it will be between the two outputs. Will you
always know that?
I don't understand why you don't want to go to merged help as
it looks like your scenario is just crying out for it?
