Link to PDF from ID

I have created an eBrochure in ID CS5 which will be distributed on CD. I want to supply the eBrochure (which is essentially just a menu) to a collection of PDF reference files. If I make a button in ID and specify to Open File and nominate the PDF, it does not work in Preview or when exported to SWF, but DOES work when exported to iPDF.  I don't want to the menu screens as PDF, but as SWF, any ideas on what's going on here ?
Also when I click Choose File to select the PDFs, some PDFs are showing greyed out and are not selectable  ... I can't see any obvious difference betwen them (naming conventions etc) Anyone seen this ?

Hi Stix
Sorry I should have been cleare in my post. If I create a link in ID using Open File and select the PDF, it does not work in InDesign's Preview function. (not Mac Preview) Of course Mac Preview is really only like a 'Quick Look' and does not support the full PDF spec. Nor does it work when exported to SWF.  From your link I see this is a known issue.
In terms of the workaround you referenced, that's a good one to remember, but unfortunately the users will need to open any number of PDF files and if they are always going to be forced to open via the browser +plug-in that poor end-user usability is not acceptable for the project.
Geez ... you'd think an ID file could correctly reference a PDF file ?  <g>
cheers

  • Bookmarks, named destinations and how to "robust" link to PDF from HTML?

I need a way to link to topics (from an HTML page) within a structured PDF file generated from InDesign, i.e. one that has an interactive bookmarks
panel, that doesn't break the links when the file is updated.
In particular, I don't want to refer to:
    *  page numbers because the document will repaginate when it is updated, breaking existing links
    * named destinations that are numeric as addition/deletion of topics renumbers the named destinations, breaking the links.
Is there any option in InDesign that creates named destinations derived from bookmark titles as that would seem to solve my problem?

I did some more trials, and here is where I am at:
As page-break-after:always; was ignored by PDFGenerator, I used a hack: I wrapped my pages inside div's which have the height of the page, and this seems to work. In addition I had to edit my CSS, and remove the  @media print wrapper around my print specific CSS parts, to get my print media specific formatting inside HTML to the PDF page.
I do not consider this a solution, but more of a hack - but it might work for what we are doing, and maybe it works for somebody else.
But what I am actually trying to do is the following:
We have a systems which creates reports in HTML which can be viewed in a browser, and printed from the browser, now we try to use PDFGenerator, to generate reports in PDF, with a minimal effort ( I know this is a the wrong way arround, HTML is not a language targeted at creating printable reports, but that's what we are doing now, and I think many other people are in the same boat)
Still if anybody has a better solution, please chime in, or tell me why the hack I did is a real bad idea  - any feedback is welcome

  • Links in PDF from View Mode Not Working

Ok, bear with me as I'm not totally familiar with Robohelp.
I have a PDF file, lets call it (PDF1).  Inside PDF1 is a flowchart with a link to another PDF (PDF2) file.
When I open PDF1 outside of RoboHelp, the link to PDF2 works.
When I open PDF1 from the view mode (sunglasses), the link to PDF2 doesn't work.  It doesn't do anything at all.  I click on the link and nothing happens.
I have ensured that the link within PDF1 is correct and pointing to the right file, and like I said, it works when viewed external of Robohelp.
Does anyone know how to fix this or what the problem could be?
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Welcome to our community
I'm not sure I fully comprehend the issue. You are previewing. This will impose some limitations and really is only there to approximate the end user experience.
You say that if you open things outside of RoboHelp the links work fine. And this is really how the end user will be using things, no? So if it works fine in this mode I'm not understanding why there is an issue.
Out of curiosity, why PDF? You are hopefully aware that one might supply PDF only for the purposes of printing, right? Otherwise, if your end user will be expecting to click links or whatever, you should be outputting a help format. (CHM, WebHelp, FlashHelp, AIR Help, etc)

  • Trust Certificates when linking to PDFs from another PDF

    Good Morning All,
Running Acrobat Pro 9. I've created a pdf document with links to other pdf. All are located in main folder and all links work. The problem is that I keep getting the warning:
If you trust the site, choose Allow. If you do not trust the site, choose Block.
    I've gone into preferences/Trust Manager/Change Settings/Allow All - Still getting the warning.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks
    G

I'll ask a question that may not help.
Did you remake the pdf after changing the Trust settings?
And it might not just be for the main PDF. It may be one of the satellite PDF. (meaning the ones linked to the the main PDF.)
IF this is on a website, or even on a server, maybe all should be placed in a folder together.
    Just an idea.

  • Link to a PDF from Flash?

This may be obvious, but I can't find how you create a link
in Flash that will download a PDF from a folder within the same
site. Any help would be appreciated.

You can link directly to a PDF file the same way you link to
anything else, if you are familiar with regular linking. Do you
know how to do that? Look up "getURL" for AS 1/2 or "navigateToURL"
    on AS3.
Or else you might want the user to be forced to download the
PDF, rather than open it in the browser? In that case, check out
FileReference.download. The user docs actually have an example
    demonstrating a PDF download:

  • Fast Web View breaking links/bookmarks in PDFs from Word 2007

I'm running Acrobat Pro 8.1.2 on WinXP, and I recently noticed an issue with PDFs that I'm creating from Word 2007. If I turn on the setting "Save As optimizes for Fast Web View," any links or bookmarks in the file break when I do a Save As. If I turn the setting back off, Save As doesn't break them.
I had had problems creating the PDFs using the PDFMaker plug-in for Word, so I used the Save As PDF or XPS feature from Microsoft instead.
PDFs created using FrameMaker are not giving me problems.
I don't know whether this is related, but the Settings button on the Save As dialog box is no longer active. I'm sure I was able to click it before, but I can't now. And that goes for PDFs from Word or FrameMaker.
    Anyone have any clues?

    Rick Henkel
    http://rickhenkel.googlepages.com/index.htm

This is related to a bug in the direct PDF output from Word 2007. I was told that Microsoft has fixed this bug in the final SP2 release (so when the service pack becomes available, this problem will not be present).
Until then, the workaround is indeed to turn off the "Save As optimizes for Fast Web View" preference in Acrobat (Edit > Preferences > Documents, under Save Settings).

  • Help! How to e-mail a PDF (from Pages) with active web links!

I have been working on this for hours without any success! I would be so grateful for a brainy Apple wiz to help me out. I am creating a Pages document that has active web links in it. My goal is to e-mail my document with the active web links in it.
So - If I export my Pages doc as a PDF to my desktop, the links work great! However - the moment I put that PDF into an email and send it the links become inactive. Is there any way to create a Pages document with web links > Export it as a PDF > Then mail with active (clickable) links? I have tried many times without success.
If the answer to my question is no, does anyone have a tip for where I can create a PDF and mail it with active links? Will any of the Adobe programs work for this type of thing?
    Thanks so much!!
    Kristen

    Using Pages '09 v4.2.
I just tested this. Assumption: You have the “Windows friendly attachments” checked in the attachments panel.
Your Pages document is open. The web links are active. You want to get it into Mail.
From the Pages menu bar, choose Share > Send Via Mail > PDF.
Mail will open with a compose window. Your PDF will be attached as a full view document. You see the links present in the PDF.
Now, click near the web links. This shows your PDF in blue. Now right-button click, and choose View as Icon from the pop-up panel.
Now mail it to yourself on another account that Mail can open.
You will see the web links in the PDF.
Right-button click on a link and from the pop-up menu, choose Open with Safari.
If you chose Quick Look, it would pop open the PDF and offer to open it further in your default PDF viewer. In my case, it is Adobe Reader.
If Reader opens this PDF from the Mail attachment, the web links remain active.
    Does this solve your issue?

  • Links in pdf not active from Preview

If I create a pdf from a Word .doc file, the links are not active in Preview but are active if I use Adobe Reader 10 (I prefer Preview as my default pdf reader).  However if I have Google download a document as a pdf file, that pdf file has active links in Preview - what's the difference and how can I get Preview to always have active links in a pdf file that is created by OSX?

hello, the pdf viewer is still somewhat experimental and under very active development - you could try if the same error is occurring in the current development version, which you can download as an addon from http://mozilla.github.io/pdf.js/extensions/firefox/pdf.js.xpi
in case it has the the same rendering problems, you could then file a bug report at https://github.com/mozilla/pdf.js/issues (a github account is necessary for it though) - please also provide a sample document where the error is apparent!

  • Trouble saving a pdf from In Design with Illustrator files linked.

I have trouble saving a pdf from In Design. Most of the files i've linked are Illustrator files with size up to 70mb.
I am getting out of memory message   The In Design file isn't that big - about 9mb.
    HELP!!!!!!

It did not help to close and reopen it.
Not sure what you mean with exporting in chunks but if you mean exporting page for page , so it didn't work either.
I think that i'll try to reduce the size of Illustrator files , but I 'm not sure what will be the optimum size for that In Design won't crush again.
Or maybe i should make the presentation in illustrator instead? It take some time to save pdf from illustrator when the original file is about 90mb, but still it works.

  • Linking to more than one point in a PDF from a browser

Hi guys, i have been tasked with creating a website to house a few pdf's. I have set this up so that you click a link in the navigation and it displays the pdf in a frame on the right side of the page and goes directly to the page i specify. The problem comes when i try to click a link directed into the same pdf on a different page, it doesnt go to the page once the pdf has been opened by the first link and just stays where it is in the pdf. Does anybody know of a way to reload the pdf upon clicking the hyperlink? I have tried turning off caching in meta tags but this has made no difference. I am using Internet Explorer 8.
    Thanks in advance,
    Simon Ineson

Does nobody know of a way to get this to work? It seems to be leaving my pdf open in the background even when i click off it and put something else in the main section of my frame and come back to it. Seems a little odd to me that i have no control over the pdf from the HTML once it has been opened.

  • Hypertext links are not always preserved from Word to PDF, using Aperçu or Adobe, depending on OS 10 or Lion. Why? This generally works perfectly in Windows. Why are Apple and Adobe unable to correctly handle links when converting from Word to PDF?

Hypertext links are not always preserved from Word to PDF, using Aperçu or Adobe, depending on OS 10 or Lion. Why? This generally works perfectly in Windows. Why are Apple and Adobe unable to correctly handle links when converting from Word to PDF?
Depending on the system version, and Office Word version:
    - a pure URL link starting with http or even www sometimes works in PDF, either produced by Aperçu or Adobe, sometimes does not work;
    - other kind of links where the text under display is not a URL, never work!
I like everything with Apple computers and software, except PDF generation. Output files are usually bigger in size, and no better quality, than under Windows. Furthermore, it is weird that something as common as hyperlinks does not work correctly!
I related this question with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, but the problem is still there with Mac OS Lion.
This problem seems to have been around for years, without any proper solution from Apple and/or Adobe! To me, this is very embarrassing!

    Greetings NoNameGiven,
If I understand the problem correctly (I’m not sure I do) you would prefer ‘iii’ to be read as “eye eye eye” rather than “three”? The alt text property is the only way that I know of to make this happen. Hope this helps.

  • Links to PDF files with relative paths from a Captivate 4 project

I'm creating a presentation in Captivate 4 (I'm making an exe file) with some links to PDF files; the links are buttons with the 'open URL or file' set. The presentation will be distributed in CDs and obviously the links will not work for they point to an absolute path in my PC. Is there another way to display external files? thanks

"file:\file folder\filename" is not a relative path.  It's still an absolute path because you're specifying the path all the way from the root drive, whether you used a drive letter or not.
A relative path shows where to find the other file in relation to the file that is calling it.
    Relative paths look like this:
myDoc.doc (if the file is in the same directory as the file calling it)
folderName/myDoc.doc (if the file is inside a folder in the same directory as the file calling it)
../myDoc.doc (if the file is located in the parent directory above the file that is calling it)
../../myDoc.doc (if the file is located two levels above the file that is calling it)
    etc

  • It used to be that when I created a pdf from a word or publisher document, hyperlinks worked fine. Now I cannot get them to work unless the text displayed for the link is the complete address and it all appears on one line. Why?

it used to be that when I created a pdf from a word or publisher document, hyperlinks worked fine. Now I cannot get them to work unless the text displayed for the link is the complete address and it all appears on one line. Why?

You can print to the Adobe PDF printer, but that only creates links that Acrobat or Reader recognize as such. That is the reason for needing the entire URL on one line. It is not actually an embedded link, but one created by Acrobat on the fly. With OFFICE 2013 you have two choices: 1. create the PDF with the print to Adobe PDF and then add the links in Acrobat so that they are complete or 2. I think the WORD save as PDF or XPS will create the PDF with links, but not sure. If so, that would be the quickest solution for you, but be aware of potential problems with the MS plugin.
Of course, the third option is to upgrade to XI which can be done with AA 9. You will probably not be eligible for a for an upgrade to whatever the next version will be.

  • Retaining active web links when distilling a PDF from PageMaker.

    OS Windows 7
I have been using my Acrobat 4 since, well, forever, and as I only needed to produce PDFs for customer proofs and printing Masters. However, it was never any good at retaining active web links that were created in the original PageMaker publication.
Now however, I need to get involved in creating survey forms, so I decided to check out Acrobat 11 with a view to upgrading.
But I've had no time for forms as even with Acrobat 11 I am still unable to create active hyperlinks that remain active after distilling into a PDF. I am pretty sure I am doing it right in PageMaker by establishing a source & destination for the particular image or text I wish to use as the clickable link, so what am I missing?
And is Acrobat 11 a good tool for creating attractive and utile customer feedback surveys that I plan on making available on my site?
    TIA
    Frank

I just made test PDFs from Pages 2 & 3 on Snow Leopard & Pages 4 on Leopard 10.5.8 (I don't have earlier versions of iWork installed on my G5 iMac with Leopard) & the links all remained active & opened the designated page in Safari each time. The only suggestion I have is to make sure you have the link set as a hyperlink before exporting as a PDF.
