Link utilization impact on responsiveness

Hello,
I'm reading a book, and here it says:That as the link utilization grows (even from 10% to 50%) the responsiveness time grows. I always thought that if the link is ~90proc utilized, then the drops can occur. Can someone explain from physics field, why the utilization till ~50% increases the latency. If we would have a 10gb link and it will be utilized 50% the user will feel bigger latency than the link utilized ~20% ? Why ?

The interrelationship between link loading and latency (and drops), and its impact to traffic, is much, much more complex than what that text is explaining.
Without touching on the many, many variables involved, I suspect what the text is alluding to is latency that exponentially begins to increase as utilization approaches 100% due to queuing delays.  Simple queuing theory would, with utilization below 50%, (rarely) should there be more than one element queued.  Once, however, utilization rises above 75%, elements queued will start to skyrocket.  This is what the first graph is showing.
In simple queuing, we normally allow for an infinite queue, but we certainly can decrease possible latency by limiting the possible queue depth.  Of course, in real networks, a high drop rate generally is adverse to most traffic too.  I.e. even though you can avoid high latency, high drops might actually be even more adverse.
If you search the Internet, you can find simple queuing calculators which will, given a certain load percentage, show you what the average queue depth will be at that load percentage.
In any case, again, real world link loading, and it's impact to traffic, is very complex.  Depending on the needs of the traffic, even 30% utilization might be too high while conversely 100% utilization doesn't always mean you need more bandwidth.

  • Bandwidth alloted and link utilization

    Hello,
I have a query and need to understand.
we have recently asked for a 16mbps mpls ip vpn link for business purporse.
is there a way if we can see anywhere the total bandwidth alloted by the service provider or we need to configure it manually ? also how can we calculate actual link utilization on any given link/interface ?we are using a 2820 cisco router and cisco asa5505 .
    many thanks
    Raj

    Hi
--- > is there a way if we can see anywhere the total bandwidth alloted by the service provider
The SP will allocate the bandwidth as per your instruction & That is using Rate limit in PE router.
SP will configure the rate limit on PE to limit the bandwidth.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/12_0/qos/command/reference/qrcmdr.html#wp1017761
---- > we need to configure it manually
You don't need to configure the bandwidth and Bandwidth command never limit the bandwidth on interface , the use of bandwidth command is to set the bandwidth on interface & that is used for calculation of metric in dynamic routing or it is user when you plan to configure QOS.
---- > how can we calculate actual link utilization on any given link/interface
So see the acutal usage , you can use bandwidth monitoring tools like PRTG , Solar wind, Whatsup, Cacti etc. & for that you need to configure SNMP string on router to pull data by this tools. ( Use PRTG Traffic Grapher  is easy & good for actual bandwidth monitoring ).
And for more detailed you can use Netflow analyzer for deep inspection of traffic but for that you need to configure netflow in routers.

  • Very slow response when I click on a link, but almost instant response if I go back and click a second time.

I often get very slow response when I click on a link, any link. But if I go back and click on the link again, then the page will open almost immediately. I discovered this by accident and noticed that this happens every time. It would be nice if I got fast response on the first click without having to do this silly procedure and it seems to me that there's a simple fix. I would appreciate it if you could help. I'm open to any and all ideas. Thanks again.
    Sincerely,

  • Dynamic Linking fails aerendercore non-responsive.

I sent this bug to Adobe:
    ******BUG******
Concise problem statement: Dynamic Link Server fails to connect in Media Encoder--aerendercore in non-repsonsive state.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. Usually happens after using Media Encoder several times in a row to attempt the render of an AE sequence either by sending the sequence to ME from AE OR by trying to dynamic link to the sequence from ME.
    Is fairly reproducable here
Results: Nothing added to cue or Dynamic Link Server never shows results.
Expected results: For either method to work as designed.
Force killing the process, aerendercore, (which shows as non-responsive in the Activity Monitor) allows normal operation as expected for a while.
Dynamic links suck, you know that don't you?

I took a look at Apple's source code changes to Cyrus IMAP, which is working with Open Directory. I did a diff against the original 2.2.12 sources using FileMerge and I see that Apple added code to look in Open Directory for user name and pass. So this explains why IMAP works but sendmail does not.
A pertinent question at this point is: Has anyone ported sendmail to Mac OS X Open Directory, similar to what Apple did with IMAP? If so, it would save me from trying to do it myself. I can probably merge the IMAP additions into sendmail, and this would allow Workgroup Manager accounts to send SMTP using SASL authentication.
Alternatively, the easier path seems to be to create a separate database for sendmail SASL, which isn't too far from what they recommend anyway.

  • Can anyone tell me or give me a link to the latest response from Apple regarding very real weak wifi signal on what seems to be a batch of both the new ipad and the earlier Ipad2. I have just bought a 2nd hand ipad2 and it has a very weak wifi signal

Over the last week or so I have been trawling the internet looking for references to weak wifi signals on the Ipad2 and was staggered by the sheer quantity of people who seem to have identical issues, not just with the ipad2 but also with the new ipad. What annoyed me most from reading the reams upon reams of comments made on the Apple community forum is the fairly large number of people who seemed to believe that 'these' people were either just moaners and wingers or else they must have something wrong with their router set-up rather than a serious fault with their ipad and it seems all because there ipad in question works like a dream.
Obviously I can only speak from my experience, and that is, I have an ipad2 32GB with wifi, purchased about 6 months ago and it works like dream with a good 2-3 bar wifi signal through 2 thick stone walls over 30 feet away. My router is a standard one supplied by my broadband supplier compatible with all 'g','b' and 'n' equipment. However, over a week ago now I bought second hand genuine ipad2 16GB with wifi from a close friend who has just purchased a new ipad3 to replace his old ipad2 (had it for over a year so no longer under warranty). When I started it up downstairs from my router, where I always use my other ipad2 which has a very strong wifi signal, I discovered that the new secondhand ipad2 I had purchased couldnt find a network signal at all. So after doing network resets and all other 'fixes' on the device recommended, I took it upstairs to my office where the router is based and found that the device could now locate the network, but the signal was lost over only 12 feet from the router!
I quizzed my good friend about this issue and he informed me that it has always been like this since he first purchased it and he never thought that it was a fault, it was just the way it was. When he first aquired the device he did think at the time that this distance was poor, but thought nothing of it as he didnt have any other ipad to measur ethe signal strength against, and as his router was in his living room anyway he nothing of it. Fair enough.
So, there we have it. One ipad2 with a very good wifi signal and another ipad2  with a very poor wifi signal running off the same router, both with the same IOS 5.0. ?
As well as all of the other isues that customers have picked up on, such as 'death grip' (which I must say does appear to happen, but personally i dont think that this is a serious issue if you are aware of this issue and have a strong signal anyway), my experience seems to be a good  example of a 'duff' wifi ipad versus a 'great' wifi ipad', an issue confirmed by complaints from a fairly large number of customers who have also reported the same or similar weak wifi signals with both the ipad2 and the ipad3. So, as this shows the weak wifi signal is a very real issue it seems on a batch of ipad2 and 3's, which to my logic is obviously a hardware issue on a batch of early ipad2's and not a software one, otherwise all ipad's would suffer this problem! So, is it a faulty antenna or a faukty network card in an early batch?
So, the bottom line now is, of course, firstly,  how can I get Apple to fix my other ipad2 when the warranty has run out? Any suggestions anyone?
Personally I think good Apple customer service should offer a recall with a replacement on this apparent batch of ipads, dont you?

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Link on one side - Response on the other

What is the best way to set up this kind of page? Frames, Uberlink, or Something Else?
Client would like two columns on a given page. One column has text with links. When you click on a link the text changes in the other column. In the past I would have used Frames. What is the best way to do this now?
I use both GLCS2 and DWCS3, but I am not savvy with special coding.

Actually, if you have a server that supports SSI, PHP, ASP etc, it's easier to use includes than components. If you change the content of a component, you have to reupload all pages that contain it. If you change the content of an include, you only have to upload the include file itself.
I can't advise on frames and SE ranking, as I don't give too much thought to SEO, most of it's a sham beyond having excellent content.

  • Could a change in the Windows operating system impact DAQ response?

I use a PCI-6013 analog DAQ card (vintage 2002) to control and acquire data with a fairly old computer running Windows 2000. I installed the card in a newer computer running Windows XP. There were no other changes to software or hardware.
The data now frequently shows a strange response in the first 0.3 seconds after starting to collect data. It reads very low (sometimes bottoming out) and comes up to the calibrated value within that first 0.3 seconds.
Could the change in operating system be the cause of this? Is there something else I can do to diagnose what is happening?
    -Kelan

This sounds a bit questionable.  you are jumping from NT to XP withough changing software?
Well vintage 2002 would put you in LabVIEW 5.1 and most likely traditional DAQ.
LabVIEW 5.1 has no official support for Windows XP nor has 6.02 although it Should "Run without errors" according to prophisy-  that does not mean that there won't be issues just no errors.
What drivers and software are you trying to port from NT to XP?

  • Is it possible to link to image in responses?

Knowing that any images supplied in the survey have to be downloaded manually (this is not fun on a large survey ), is it possible that the image itself has a hyperlink since its stored on Adobe servers? If the hyperlink can be made accessible, I can reference it in my post-survey analysis.

    Hi;
No, there is not a hyperlink you can access for the images in the Response Table.  I hope that soon we again have a method for users to submit feature request ideas but until then I'll have to note your request.
    Thanks,

  • Link to view responses bringing up error message

My customer is encountering an error message when they click on teh link to view the response table.
The error message reads 'That URL is not in the corect format for an Acrobat.com document link'
The link works for me but they encounter this message each time?

Sorry for the late response. I am not sure if you still have this issue. What I have seen in the past is that the text ofr the link and the associated url to that text in a email do not match. You might want to send the link that works for you again to your customer.

  • Bandwidth Utilization Avg or Max for capacity Planning best practice

Hello All - This is a conceptual or Non-Cisco product question. Hope you can help me to get this best industry practice
I am doing a Capacity planning for the WAN Link Bandwidth. To study the last month bandwidth utilization in the MRTG graph, i am seeing  two values
    Average
    Maximum.
To measure how much bandwidth my remote location is using which value i have to use. Average or Max?
Average is always low eg. 20% to 30%
Maximum is continuous 100% for 3 hour in 3 different intervals in a day and become 60% in rest of the day
What is the best practice followed in the networking industry to derive the upgrade size of the bandwidth by using the Utilization graph
    regards,
    SAIRAM

    Hello.
It makes no sense to use average during whole day (or a month), as you do the capacity management to avoid business impact due to link utilization; and average does not help you to catch is the end-users experience any performance issues.
Typically your capacity management algorithm/thresholds are dependent on traffic patterns. As theses are really different cases if you run SAP+VoIP vs. youtube+Outlook. If you have any business critical traffic, you need to deploy QoS (unless you are allowed to increase link bandwidth infinitely).
So, I would recommend to use 95-percentile of maximum values on 5-15 minutes interval (your algorithm/thresholds will be really sensitive to pooling interval, so choose it carefully). After to collect baseline (for a month or so)  - go and ask users about their experience and try to correlate poor experience with traffic bursts. This would help you to define thresholds for link upgrade triggers.
PS: proactive capacity management includes link planning for new sites and their impact on existing links (in HQ and other spoke).
PS2: also I would recommend to separately track utilization during business hours (business traffic) and non-business (service or backup traffic).

  • PIX515E - Internal Nodes - Bandwidth Utilization

    Hi Experts,
The infrastructure has PIX515E as the Firewall and few Web Servers and Database Servers inside. Is it possible to retreieve information regarding the bandwidth available at the outside interface of PIX (Internet link utilization ) utilized by each of the nodes seperately? I could use SNMP to get the overall data transfer at the Outside interface of PIX but isit possible to get utilization details of individual nodes ? Is Netflow an option ?
It would be great if you could please put in your valuable suggestions.
    Please help !
    Regards,
    Anup

    Hi Jouni ,
Thank you for the response and congrats on becoming the designated VIP for 2013 Security !
Thats correct. ASDM has lot of options on the dashboard for tracking the device performance and parameters but unfortunately they are very limited and not that relevant in the case of the requierement.
I came across this tiny freeware application from Solarwinds which can monitor data transfer through an interface using SNMP in real time and gives you the output in a graph (http://www.solarwinds.com/products/freetools/real-time-bandwidth-monitor.aspx) both traffic in and traffic out. But that too won't be sufficient as it gives only the overall data transfer through the interface.
    Internet ->PIX -> Web Servers/Database Servers/Backup Servers
I tried taking the NIC card utilization of Servers but that would include all the network activity , including the internal trafic flow. The infrastructure have backup servers in place which is configured to take regular backup of Web/Database Servers , daily as well as weekly which are in the range of GB . So that's some pretty huge traffic flowing across the internal network. So I am not sure how to go about it.
PIX does not support Netflow too according to this post on CSC (https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/221338)
    Thanks ,

  • Adding link to the photo and Name in the outlook contact card -Enterprise wide

How can I make the name and photo in the outlook contact card link to my profile page? I read articles where it is mentoined that the URL is set in Registry, currently my organization does not have any link associated with photo and name in contact card.
I want to implement this across the organization , any deployment or changes that I need to do to implement this across?
Appreciate if you can provide details on how this is done. The url will look like this:
    https://www.produrl.com/userid={userid}
How can I dynamically add respective userid in the link?Appreciate your response on this.

So you want to redesign the contact card in Outlook? Are you using SharePoint? If signed into sharepoint via the social connect, there is a link to the mysharepoint page under View source. I don't think you can change the link or customize the card,

  • Differing Web Service responses between 10.1.3.3 and 11g

In our production environment we have deployed several ESB projects. I am currently going through these projects and attempting to update them to 11g. These projects follow the same basic design. In the 101.3.4 environment they consist of an exposed routing service generated from a schema document which routes to a Web service adapter. The exposed service is called from our asset management system the service adapter is invoking a PeopleSoft Asynchronous one way web service. In 11g this became two web service adapters (the first as an exposed one-way service) linked by a mediator.
In our 101.3.4 environment this process worked without exceptions. After upgrading the project our asset management system would raise an exception after each call to the exposed service. Interestingly I can check em and also PeopleSoft and the payload is successfully delivered. When I review the instance in em there are no faults or exceptions. I have auditing turned on and can see that the service, mediator and reference steps have all successfully completed. When I look at the log for the particular instance I do receive a warning which states:
Error parsing envelope: most likely due to an invalid SOAP message.: Unexpected EOF in prolog\r\n at [row, col {unknown-source}]: [1,0]
I used soapUI to debug the service calls. If I call the PeopleSoft web service without using the mediator project I receive the following response:
    Tue Aug 18 20:55:37 PDT 2009:DEBUG:<< "HTTP/1.1 200 OK[\r][\n]"
    Tue Aug 18 20:55:37 PDT 2009:DEBUG:<< "HTTP/1.1 200 OK[\r][\n]"

    Tue Aug 18 20:55:37 PDT 2009:DEBUG:<< "X-Powered-By: Servlet/2.4 JSP/2.0[\r][\n]"
When I call the exposed service in my 10.1.3.4 ESB project I receive the following response:
    Tue Aug 18 20:57:26 PDT 2009:DEBUG:<< "HTTP/1.1 200 OK[\r][\n]"
    Tue Aug 18 20:57:26 PDT 2009:DEBUG:<< "HTTP/1.1 200 OK[\r][\n]"

    Tue Aug 18 20:57:26 PDT 2009:DEBUG:<< " <soapenv:Body/>[\n]"
    Tue Aug 18 20:57:26 PDT 2009:DEBUG:<< "</soapenv:Envelope>"
You will notice that what is returned is a soap envelope which has an empty body.
If i then make the call through the 11g exposed service I get the following response:
    Tue Aug 18 20:58:46 PDT 2009:DEBUG:<< "HTTP/1.1 202 Accepted[\r][\n]"
    Tue Aug 18 20:58:46 PDT 2009:DEBUG:<< "HTTP/1.1 202 Accepted[\r][\n]"
    Tue Aug 18 20:58:46 PDT 2009:DEBUG:<< "Date: Wed, 19 Aug 2009 03:58:46 GMT[\r][\n]"
    Tue Aug 18 20:58:46 PDT 2009:DEBUG:<< "Content-Length: 0[\r][\n]"
    Tue Aug 18 20:58:46 PDT 2009:DEBUG:<< "Content-Type: [\r][\n]"
    Tue Aug 18 20:58:46 PDT 2009:DEBUG:<< "X-ORACLE-DMS-ECID: 0000ICkncqY0bq3pzk8DyW1ANuRl000035[\r][\n]"
    Tue Aug 18 20:58:46 PDT 2009:DEBUG:<< "X-Powered-By: Servlet/2.5 JSP/2.1[\r][\n]"
    Tue Aug 18 20:58:46 PDT 2009:DEBUG:<< "[\r][\n]"
I believe the exception being thrown by the asset management system is a result of the zero length, empty content-type being returned from my mediator service or possibly the fact that the return code is 202 as opposed to 200.
First I would like to know if anyone has experienced the same behavior and whether this behavior is by design. Is a response required from all services even if they are one way?
Second if this is by design is it possible within the mediator project to force a return code of 200 and a response that includes an empty soap envelope?
Of course any other solutions are welcome as well. I am leaning towards a solution which can be implemented within my mediator project as I have much more flexibility there then either of the other participating systems.
    Thank you very much.

After exploring this issue with Oracle Support and doing some of my own research I believe that the issue is not the SOA Suite but rather the third party system which was calling exposed service in the SOA Suite. According to the link below both the response returned from the 10.1.3.4 esb project and the 11.1.1.1 mediator project are valid. "This SOAP 1.1 request optional response HTTP binding, in conjunction with the SOAP 1.1 binding [SOAP 1.1], can be used for sending request messages with an optional SOAP response. This binding augments the SOAP 1.1 binding by allowing that the HTTP [RFC 2616] response MAY have a 202 status code and the response body MAY be empty. Note that the HTTP [RFC 2616] specification states "the 202 response is intentionally non-committal" and so any content in the response body, including a SOAP Envelope, MAY not be an expected SOAP response"
