Linked files in AI CS4?

Hi guys,
Not sure if it's something I've done or if it would sort itself out if I restarted AI but I thought I'd drop a quick message in here just in case.
When I try 'placing' an image into a AI document, it appears to be embedding the file [be it a psd, tiff, jpeg etc]. Why would it of stopped linking the file?
I spotted this because in my Layers palette it says 'image' or the file name next to the thumbnail, as appose to 'Linked File' like it always has done. And in my Links palette, I've got the odd looking icon [I'm not sure what it is] on the RHS. Why would AI be embedding the placed files all of a sudden, have I clicked something?!
Cheers in advance.
Rhys

Yep, that appears to of worked fine, thank you for the quick response. I wonder why that box became 'un-ticked', I didn't touch it

  • Can you place linked files into Photoshop CS4?

If you place a .psd or .tif file into an InDesign file, you are alerted if any changes are made to that file (as I'm sure most of you know). Is there any way to do this within Photoshop? I have several dozen carpet sample .tif files that are to be used in several hundred "montage" type "carpet sample groups" layered .psd files that will then be saved as images for the web (does that make sense?). Is there any way to do this so that if there's a change in the original .tif file it will automatically change any .psd file in which it's being used? I know the easiest way to do this is in InDesign, but I have two problems: 1) the conversion from InDesign to a web image is laborious, and 2) the person doing the work does not know InDesign at all. I can show him how to use it, but that's a small part of the battle.
Any suggestions? I'm using CS4 for Windows.
    Thanks,
    Lloyd

Thanks for your comments. The problem arises because we have to create that intermediate Photoshop step.
We have, say, a dozen individual carpet swatches that are used to create hundreds of combinations (which are all separate layered .psd files). If one swatch changes (color, for example), then we have to open every .psd file in which that swatch appears and change it (or place the changed one). I'd love to be able to change the original and have it update every layered file in which it appears, just like InDesign does with placed/linked files.
    Maybe there's a plug-in (wishful thinking)?
Also, I'd really like to have it changed in the web development end of things, but we're working with a company that is (obviously) using templates and we can only give them single images, hence the need to create the intermediate Photoshop files.

  • ID CS4 Anti-Alias problems with Linked files

All the linked files i have put into Indesign CS 4 whether they are PSD, Tiff, layered or flat have shown up slightly pixelated. When i print the same file from its native program (in this case Photoshop CS4) the files print clean and crisp and the text and artwork have clean edges but when i link the file into an Indesign CS4 doc and then print it off, the file comes out fairly clean but there are jagged lines on the text and art.
    Mac OX 10.4.11
    Intel Mac Pro G5
    4GB Ram
2X 2.66 Dual Core Intel Xeon
    250GB HD

I now understand your question and yes in the graphics tab in my Indesign print settings I have it set to send all data. I exported the indesign file as a high res PDF and the output on the printer was the same. I don't believe its a printer setting because when i switch my display performace from typical to high-res the text and art from the linked file look pixalated. On the layered psd file the text files are not converted and yet when displayed through ID CS4 the text looks fuzzy and slightly pixalated.
Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

  • I can't open .CR2 files in Photoshop CS4

I'm unable to get the .CR2 files from my new Canon Rebel T3i to open in Photoshop CS4.  I just got this camera and I never had this problem with my old camera (Rebel Xsi).  The raw files from the Xsi will still open, but not the ones from the new camera.  Can anyone help me understand why this is happening?
    Thanks,   Jo

Your only option is to upgrade or use the DNG convertor.
Just to be perfectly accurate, that would be two options.
To use the free Adobe DNG converter, you would download and install the very latest version then whenever you want to edit raw images you'll go through a process something like this:
    1.  Upload the .cr2 files from your camera into a folder on your hard drive.
    2.  Run the DNG Converter application and select the folder (it works on folders, not files).
    3.  Convert all the .cr2 files to .dng files.
    4.  Open the .dng files into Photoshop CS4 through the Camera Raw dialog.

  • [JS] I would like to find the date modifed of a link file

I have a vbs script that updates my links. It checks if the file exists and then the modified date. I need to verify the link file had been updated within a few hours to verify it has today's info instead of yesterday's.
I would like to convert this to use JavaScript but have had difficulties finding the link's modified date.
I don't expect someone to rewrite my script but can someone give an example to find if a file exists and it's modified date?

    var file2 = new File(myLink.filePath)
    alert("file2.name: " + file2.name)
    alert("file2.name: " + file2.modified)
    For the date I use:
var currentTime = new Date() to get the time for Now and then subtract the file's date. If the difference is more then six hours I wan't to update the file. We link to text files created daily for lists of Dow stocks so must verify we're using today's stock info. I should change the time to one hour instead of six but it's worked for the past eight years.
I'm now updating from InDesign CS to CS4 and from FreeHand?? to native Illustrator files for our graphs. I haven't figured out how to update the Illustrator graph's data using a script... well that's a different forum....

  • Problems working with linked files in illustrator

Hi everyone, i hope you can help me with this doubt that had given me problems since I started using illustrator. I'm using linked files in illustrator because i'm able to modify the files later, as I do in InDesign too, but in both cases I had have a lot of problems with the links, I don't know if i'm doing something bad, but this is what I do: I create a folder where I place my file (illustrator or InDesign) and the files that should be linked. Whit this i'm expecting of it to work like an html where the links works while they are in the folder, no matter if you move the folder, the links keeps working on the HTML.
But I have noticed that it doesn't work in the same way, because, I had have cases when the links work perfectly, but then i format my computer (Mac) and after that, I open my files againg but the links don't work already. I have exactly the same problem with my coworker, because im trying to edit a file with linked files since the place where it is in the other computer, obviously it opens perfectly there, but in my computer it asked to repair the links, so I select to repair automatically but I ask me to does it manually... So this is getting me tired, because I must repair the links here in my computer to work on it, and when for it get finished, my coworker should repair the links again, and this is going to be always we share files or i format my computer. It is important to mention that my coworker and me use mac with leopard and the same version of adobe (CS4).
So, as I said before, i dont knoe if my method is incorrect, should I do something different? any option to activate? or program that I should use? because I have herd a lot of Adobe Bridge, I don't know if this could have a option that could help me.
I hope finally somebody can help me with this doubt, because im sure that I'm not the only one having thie problem.
    Thanks for your help

Hi. I am also experiencing this very annoying problem. Currently using version CS2, but this problem dates back to version 9.  I check the box to link a tif file, not embed it, in Illustrator. All is well until I save and reopen the file. Suddenly the file is embedded. No other changes have been made to the folders or anything else. It just embeds itself and cannot be linked again.
So far, I conclude that something in the file itself has corrupted, because it is not possible to place a new file and have it link correctly again. So if I anticipate more changes, I create a new file.
Notice the upper left corner of the top toolbar. If you click on a file that has embedded itself, the file will be identified as "Group" instead of "linked file."
I've tried all kinds of things, like trying to ungroup it, trying to release a clipping mask, and so forth, to see what went wrong. Have not figured it out.

  • Links do not appear in links panel in inDesign CS4

I don't recall when this happened but I no longer have any links in the Links Panel in inDesign CS4 in ANY of my documents old, new, it doesn't matter. If I package a file it gathers all the links if I need to update a link I have to go to the original link outside of inDesign to find it. I have found other problems like this in other forums but have not been successful with the solutions.
Can anyone please please help me with this??
    Thanks

  • Problems opening files in DW CS4 - not all files and folders are showing

    Hi!
I'm trying to change some already existing files on the homepage but when I click the Open button, it doesn't show all the files and folders, even if I ask it to show all files. When I open the ftp folder in Explorer, I can see everything. I'm using Vista and Dreamweaver is version 10.0 Build 4117.
Most of the unaccessible files and folders were created using Frontpage a long time ago but this also happens when I create new files, although the new ones I created used one of the old ones as a template. Any help would be appreciated! It's rather annoying not to be able to access all the files.
    Thanks a lot!
    Mathias.

Are all of your pages that are linked to this on the same directory level?
The ../../ in front of every link means "go up two directory levels". If there are no pages, or if some of the pages are not at that directory level, the links would be going to nothing.
I don't use library items myself, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it, but the "bad path" in your error report leads me to think some of those paths (since they're the only ones in the code) could be pointing to the wrong locations.
My response will also bump your question back to the top of the pile. Maybe someone else will have a good idea of what's actually happening.

I do not have any of those POS codec packs  installed. the only thing I have installed is Coreavc Pro. Coreavc was  the only way I could get the files to play correctly in Media Player  Classic (which plays them just fine now so I know its not a hardware  speed thing). I tried to install Quicktime and that was not even able to  play the Contour MOV files correctly, because of this I removed  Quicktime from my computer. I have tried to rename them to MP4 and use them in Premiere and it has the same effect.
Has anyone out there been able to play and edit these  Cont HD MOV files with Premiere CS4. We are in process of building a catalog using ID CS4. All files are on a file server. When opening a file on the PC it causes the linked files to show up low res due to the fact that the PC can not find the linked files because of the drive names are different. By that I mean when you map a drive on PC it uses letters to start out the drive name (N/Art/Files/Catalog) where mac just used the name (Art/Files/Catalog). Does anyone know how to fix this so the PC recognizes the files?

We work in CS3, both  on MACs and PCs, and don't have such a problem. Could you copy&paste here the exact path to the same link from MAC and PC, or make and post a couple of screenshots?
For example, here is how it looks on my side:
    PC sees it as (\\server\share\folder\subfolder\file)
    \\10.44.54.70\InDisign\MAC\Face\Sambrus_Elena_leto10.tif
MAC sees the same link as (share\folder\subfolder\file)
    InDisign:MAC:Face:Sambrus_Elena_leto10.tif

  • Disappearing Sound Track on Video Files Downloaded on CS4

    Dear friends on the forum;
I have a Sony PD 150 camcorder. I took several videos on it which I subsequently downloaded to my PC (using Windows XP, Home Edition).   I recall trying to increase the sound volumne on a couple of them, without a lot of success.  Anyway, when I went to check these files today I found that the sound track was non-existent!
Can anyone shed light as to why this happened, how I can prevent it happening in future and if I can somehow retrieve the missing sound track?
    Many thanks!
    Lewis

I tried making the media off-line then re-linking it to the video file on my hard drive but no luck, Hunt.  My audio is indeed flatlline; no sound both in the source and on the timeline.  Is there any hope, do you think or should I just chalk this one up to experience and be careful not to do any copy/pasting.  I consider this a serious flaw in Adobe.
    Thanks for your kind input!

What was supposed to have (hopefully) happened?
You should have gotten the Link Media dialog to fix your Audio.
Now, Copy/Paste has been known to "loose" the Audio. It does not always happen, and sometimes it seems to work for a bit, and then the Audio goes flatline. Re-Linking the Media usually works fine.
Is your Audio "flatline?" When you Dbl-click on it, does it open in the Source Monitor with a Waveform? Does it play OK in the Source Monitor and not the Timeline, or both?
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Unable to open linked files in new CS3 install

One of my clients just purchased a new PC (Dell Inspiron 537S) with Windows Vista Home Premium to replace his old Inspiron 530 (also running Vista HP). After installing CS3 Design Studio and attaching an external drive loaded with his file archive, all of his Illustrator files which include links load with the following error:
"An error occurred trying to read the linked file "file.xxx". Choose Repair to locate the missing file, Replace to select another file or Ignore to leave the link unchanged."
This shouldn't be unusual, if the path to a linked file has changed, you'd need to point the link to the new path, but clicking Repair or Replace and browsing to the linked file (which invarably is in the same directory as the .ai file, and is usually a .psd which opens just fine in Photoshop) just cycles back to the same error message, ad infinitum. After about 30 tries, I got one of the links to load correctly, resaved the document, thinking that would repair it, but when I opened it again, got the error.
These files were created on multiple computers, and none of the other computers (all with CS3) have ever had any trouble opening them. This despite the drive letter on the external drive being unstable on the old system (would often be J:, K: or L:, and images always worked).
Any new .ai files we create on this file which have links all work fine.
Manually replacing the links in a file is not an option for two reasons:
    1. There are thousands of .ai files in this archive, and re-linking images in them will take weeks.
    2. It simply doesn't work. I tried ignoring the error on one file to load it, and re-linking the .psd backgrounds to re-save it, and the images still didn't load after re-linking them.
I have already tried doing a factory-restore of the system and reinstalling CS3, making sure that there were no errors in the install. What else might cause this behavior, and how can I resolve it?

Outdated permissions on the files from your old computer. Right-click, Properties --> Security --> Advanced, disable Inherit settings from parent folders, chose to copy. After that, delete outdated security keys and assign current ones. You may even need to go so fart as to Take Ownership of some files to correctly restore the new system's default security settings.
