Linked PSD vs JPEG

I make a monthly publication that is uploaded to a third party site as a PDF. Basically, our clients are not tech savvy so I need the best looking but fastest loading PDF I can get.
For print I usually use a linked PSD file instead of a JPEG for quality and because it just makes editing easier. For this project, I am still using linked PSD files for the majority of images. Would using JPEGs decrease the overall size of my PDF?
May sound like newbie question, but I keep finding conflicting opinions on the best way to handle PDFs. So I'm throwing this out there.
What's your opinion?

It might, but only slightly. TIF would be a better option than JPEG.
Why not compare? Run the process twice, once with PSD and once with TIFF.
My prediction is either no space saved or so little space saved that the effort is not worth it.

  • How do i add a link to a jpeg

want to add a link to a jpeg file which i want to include on an e mail....how do i do this?

markwmsn's suggestion will work if you are trying to add a link, in an email message, that leads to a JPEG image hosted somewhere else.
But if you wanted to put a JPEG image inside an email message and have the link lead from the JPEG (when clicked in the email) to a web page somewhere else, then the code must be different. You will need to use standard HTML link code around the image. Your email program would have to let you do that, and the email program on the other end would have to be HTML-friendly. Some people turn off HTML in email, and other people turn off image display in email, so if your recipient does either, the link may not work as intended.

  • Linked psd not rendering correctly. Text and colour shows up wrong. What's happening?

I'm trying to use linked psd's but when I go to link one, the text shows up all wrong.
I'm not resizing the linked psd at all, and i'm saving it exactly as I would save my main psd.
Does anyone know how I can fix this?
    Here's a comparison.
The text from the linked psd is on the left, and the text from the psd that's containing the linked psd is on the right.

I'm not sure what you mean by "linking"?  Have you tried Layer > Matting > Defringe?  What happens when you flatten the file?

  • Embedding linked PSD's in AI using AS/JS

    Hi,
I am looking at a way of embedding linked PSD files into an AI doc using either Applescript or Javascript. The AI docs I work with already have the PSD's placed as linked images. I am using Illustrator CS2 (12.0.1) on a Mac, running OS 10.4.10.
I need to ensure that the PSD files are embedded with the "Convert Photoshop layers to options" option set, so that the blending options set on the PSD layers are honoured when brought into Illustrator. This works fine when done manually, as the "Photoshop Import Options" window appears for each PSD I embed.
I encounter a problem when trying to embed a PSD using AS/JS though. In both cases, there are no options available to be used in conjunction with the 'embed' command. 'Embed' seems to assume and use the "Flatten Photoshop layers to a single image" option, which does not honour the PSD layer blending settings.
    i Things tried:
*tried setting the Photoshop options to preserve layers in AS prior to running 'embed' i.e.
    >set photoshopOptions to {class:Photoshop options, preserve layers:true, pixel aspect ratio correction:false}
    >set IllustratorPreferences to {class:Illustrator preferences, Photoshop file options:photoshopOptions}
I have tried the equivalent in JS too.
I can see that the preference is being set, but this still has no effect on the 'embed' command as these prefs relate to opening PSD files in AI only (same "Photoshop Import Options" window though?!)
*have looked at UI Scripting in AS - I am able to select and press the "Embed" button in the Control Palette in AI, but AI does not respond at all, i.e. I can see the "Embed" button change colour when clicked but nothing else. Other UI elements in AI respond correctly to being clicked, just not the buttons in the Control Palette.
So any help/guidance/suggestions etc would be greatly appreciated.

  • Why does InDesign CS5 modify linked PSDs with each Save?

I'm using Creative Suite CS5, Mac OS 10.6.6. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and how is it fixed?
Every time I save an InDesign document with a linked PSD file, the PSD file's modification date changes as well, which in turn shows up in InDesign as a link that needs updating. After I update the link in InDesign and Save, that psd file's modification date changes again, and it shows up again as a link that needs updating. There seems to be no limit to the cycle, and it isn't specific to any particular file...happens in every similar scenario.
    This is makin' me dizzy!

This is caused by a bug in a Suitcase update. Extensis issued another patch almost immediately.

  • After 9.0.2 Update on PS-CS2 Can't Save as PSD or jpeg

After startup of my Photoshop CS2 (WinXP), I got a notice of an update of 9.0.2, so I installed it. Now when I try to save files as PSDs or JPEGs, they end up becoming 5CM files, which I can't open.  I was very content with CS2 before the update.  Is there a way to uninstall the 9.0.2 update, or do I have to uninstall the whole CS2 and reinstall it?  Or is there another fix?  Help is much appreciated; thanks.

Resolved.  After updating to 9.0.2, I edited an image and saved it as a PSD, but when naming the file I put in a "3.5x4.5cm" in the file name, and it saved it as an unopenable 5CM file.  I just now took the same inage and saved it as a PSD, but omitted the "3.5x4.5cm" in the file name and it saved it just fine as a PSD.  The same also for the JPEG.  The problem had to be in the ".5cm" ending of the file name.  Doing the 9.0.2 update just happened to be the timing of the file name problem.

  • Linked PSD files not found when opening .ai files via shared folder

My main user folder on the iMac is set to be shared (read/write, including all enclosed files) with my MacBook Pro so that I can get someone to help me on a big job. The job is a series of one-page InDesign files (they are newspaper advertisements). The IDD files contain a series of Illustrator files with linked PSD files.
The idea is that we can both work on the .idd and .ai files in the same folder at the same time.
It's all working fine EXCEPT that whenever an .ai file is opened on the MacBook, Illustrator doesn't know where the linked PSD files are. We can update the link, but when the .ai file is then opened on the iMac and saved, the same thing happens the next time it is opened on the Macbook.
I don't want to embed the PSD files into the .ai files as sometimes I have to modify them and they can be linked to up to 20 .ai files. Any ideas?
G5 iMac OSX 10.7.5 / Macbook Pro OSX 10.8.2 / networked via FireWire cable / file sharing on, laptop user has Administrator status, all files are read/write, permissions include all enclosed files / CS6

If you are rebooting the computer holding down T to share via firewire, that is your problem. that mounts the other computer as a hardrive and probably messes up the filepath.
Turn on sharing via Ethernet or wireless
    Connecting two computers using Ethernet
You can use an Ethernet cable to connect two Mac computers and share files or play network games.
To connect two computers using Ethernet:
Connect a standard Ethernet cable from the Ethernet port on one computer to the Ethernet port on the other. You don’t need to use an Ethernet crossover cable.
If your computer doesn’t have an Ethernet port, try using a USB-to-Ethernet adapter.
On each computer, choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Sharing. Note the computer name for each computer.
In the Finder on one of the computers, choose Go > “Connect to Server,” and then click Browse.
Double-click the other computer in the window and enter your password, if necessary.
If you manually configured the TCP/IP settings for the Ethernet service on the computer you are connecting to, you may need to enter that computer’s TCP/IP address in the “Connect to Server” dialog.
To see or set the TCP/IP address, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Network, and select Ethernet in the list.

  • PSD to JPEG - Converts back after closing.....

Trying to convert photo from .psd to .jpeg.   I "flatten the layers" and "save as" jpeg......but as soon as i close out of image and then reopen it converts back to .psd???? Can anyone help?

Okay, so you are using some version of Photoshop Elements?
In PE Organizer find your file that you just saved and right-click on it. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of window that pops up and select "show properties." This will tell you what format it is. Also, when you "save as" make sure that you are including it in Organizer, otherwise you will not see it and will only find your .psd file. Alternatively, you could search for wherever it is saved on your hard drive and double-click it to open it.

  • Convert psd to jpeg

    Dag,
    Alvast hartelijk dank,
    Johan

JPEG is a visually lossy compression and even at the best quality setting there will be artefacts. Your file will never become bigger, because the algorithm already is at its optimum. So far nothing is wrong here and even if it were technically possible, a larger file wouldn't necessarily mean better quality. If that's an issue, you simply need to use a different image format like a compressed TIFF to send your file out e.g. to a print facility.

  • Problem opening files having linked .psd files

    Hi
A client of mine is running windows xp 32 bit on an Intel Core 2 duo processor with 2 Gb RAM and Geforce 8400 PCI Express card. Recently He received  Illustrator CS3 files created on a MAC computer which has lots of linked .psd files. The illustrator files opens sometimes but most of the time it gives an error message " missing linked .psd files"  and it prompts to locate the .psd files. On relocating the .psd files, it opens sometimes but mostly it displays the error message that the linked files are corrupt. and the Illustrator closes by itself. On re booting the PC sometime the file opens but mostly it doesn't.
I can't figure out the problem.
    Someone please help

Yes the Photoshop files are opening in photoshop I even saved  a fresh copy of it but the error still keeps coming regularly. I even tried opening the files in a different PC but it gives the same error messages. I took the files to the PC it was originally created in and it works perfectly in the guy's MAC computer. I tried several times and it never displayed an error message. Whereas 8 out of ten times the file is not opening in any of my client's PC.
Now if the files are corrupt then how cum they are opening sometimes in my client's PC and is always opening in the MAC it was originally created in.

  • PSE Will not open and .psd or .jpeg files

Please help, I have been using PSE 11 with success to edit hundreds of pics.  However now all of a sudden it will not open any .psd or .jpeg files.  When I go to PSE menu - open a finder window opens up and when I go to choose a file, the open finder window goes disapears and then the menu bar gets faded out so I cannot access any of the menu options in PSE.  There are have not been any PSE warnings or messages. I have to use force quit on PSE.  I have restarted my computer and even uninstalled and reinstalled PSE 11 and this still did not solve the issue.  I am running OSX 10.9 with 16 GB of memory and a 3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo.

That was BRILLIANT how you somehow knew I had the coverflow view open.  I tried to close the coverflow first thing but PSE closed down again so I went through the steps again previously suggested .........in my Finder - Library - Preferences - and deleted the follow again: (com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist / Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 Paths / Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 Settings)  I was then able to close the coverflow view and the combination of tweeks helped.  I can now get back to work after three days of headaches trying to solve this puzzle.
    THANK YOU!!!

  • CS6 Links Window Shows jpeg file name but not tiff or psd file name

So I have a question, I noticed that in CS5 and CS6 that when i place a jpeg file in Illustrator, the file name does appear in the links window, but when i place a tiff or a psd file there is no file name in the links window, this drives me nuts.  Is there a way to see the files name of placed psd and tiffs in the links window?

    Here's my thoughts...
    1. You are a bit confused and I wonder how you can determine a file is a PSD or a TIF by looking at it?  Not all print drivers can recognize PSD's, but can recognize TIF ( this means almost all output devices can interpret TIF's no problem ).  That said, PSD's can manage layers better than TIF's which add to file size each layer you include in the TIF.
    2. Never say never.  This all depends on the file's use.  Layered TIFs can add complexity in which a print driver can or cannot deal with.  As you work on an image, you may want to merge layers for whatever reason(s) and you always have the option to flatten whenever you feel like it.  However, It is also a good idea to dupe the file as you move along.  That means you always have a layered version to fall back on should you need to edit later on.  I also Place transparent PSDs in Illustrator files with no problems.  But, I save as EPS in Illustrator and when I do that, then the file is automatically flattened.  This is perhaps what the internet was talking about.
    3.  Yes, see number 2 above.  There's no such thing as automatic flattening of TIFFs.  Again, this all depends on the printer and whether or not it can print while retaining original layers.  Some do, some don't.  Most of the time, I edit in PSD with layers intact.  Then, when I prep the file for printing, I will save a copy as a flattened TIFF so the file streamlines through the RIP and Print process.
    4.  Makes no difference.  Use 'em if you've got 'em.
Try to get some good resource material at a library or college bookstore or barnes & noble.  Also, get Adobe's Print Publishing Guide.  This is a good reference guide.

  • Drag & Drop or Duplicate layers from PSD to JPEG when creating action

    Hey everyone,
I have been trying the last few hours to create an instagram Polaroid action for my JPEG files.
I have the picture, and i have the PSD file with a few layers such as virulence gradient map etc...
When creating the action, first I drag all the layers from my PSD to the JPEG file. Problem is, every time when i finish recording the action, photoshop doesnt seem to know or understand the layers i moved.
It keeps running, without copying the layers.
I tried to do it the other way around - recording - opening the PSD - dragging the JPEG (which this time worked)
but then, when saving the file, it cant be saved as JPEG, because i last modified the psd file. and it will not work when doing batch because i opened specific JPEG when recording.
I have no problem saving the PSD as PNG, then just running it which will work fine.
But problem is when flattening, then i just lost the layers which create the effect.
    Any help?
    Thanks

    anyone?
