Linking 2 Time Capsules?

Good day,
Here is my situation and I am trying to find a solution.
I have FIOS internet/TV with several hookups throughout the house, 2 on the second floor, 1 on the main floor, and 1 in the basement. I have a Time Capsule on the second floor of the house linked to a FIOS router.  Both the Time Capsule and FIOS Router are broadcasting different Wireless networks.  I set it up this way because I get awful signal on my porch and basement, and I was hoping that one network would have better signal than the other.  I installed an Airport Express in the basement, hoping it would help boost the signal so coverage would be better, but the difference is hardly noticeable.  I am now considering buying another Time Capsule for the basement, but I don't know if I can hook it up to the FIOS input down there and link it to the Time Capsule Network.
Any help or suggestions?

I have a Time Capsule on the second floor of the house linked to a FIOS router.
I installed an Airport Express in the basement,
You have the express in the wrong place. Express cannot extend poor wireless signal any better than your other clients can pick it up.  You should place the Express somewhere on the first floor where it gets good signal from the TC and can also give good signal the stuff in the basement.
A TC in the basement will not work any better than the express.. at least by wireless.. you need a hard connection.. second floor to basement.. Ethernet is the stand out. Expensive to install.. but if you want to fix the problem that is the best. EOP or homeplug can sometimes work but often just add to the mess of wireless and something else that goes up and down.. but it can work in the right situation better.. as it uses your house wiring as substitute for ethernet.

I just bought a time capsule and it will not connect to preexisting home WiFi.  The Airport Utility recognizes one of my neighbors networks but not mine.  I have ATT&T U-verse.  I understand I can use the Airport time capsule as a router but would prefer to use it in my existing network

I have a similar hookup, I have a Airport Extreme & Time Capsule. I would like to connect my Extreme to the Time Capsule "6th gen". I would also like to use the LAN ports on the Extreme. Can this connection be done wirelessly or wired? I'm using a Mac Tower that does't have a wireless card if that's important.
As long as you have two apple routers then it is up to you which way you do it.
You can connect them by ethernet and use it setup as roaming network.. for wireless.. it will simply be bridged on the router side. Ethernet is much the faster solution.
But if you want to use wireless link that is also fine if the range is not too great. Then ethernet to the computer.. so you effectively have a wireless bridge...
    so, Cablemodem----Airport Extreme- - - - - - - -wireless link- - - - - Time Capsule------computer
Where the more solid lines are ethernet.. that is possible setup. And using the TC directly on ethernet to the computer will keep your backup speed good while also giving you hopefully your full internet speed so that works well.

  • How do I configure Time Capsule as backup with an existing d-link router?

I just purchased a 1T Time Capsule. My original idea was that it would replace our d-link router. However, I was not happy with the speed and connectivity compared with the totally awesome D-Link (Dual Band DIR825), which is solid and connects and stays connected with all computers in my household. So, now I want to use the Time Capsule as the backup for three MacBooks (all running the latest OS).
So... how do I set this up so that it will work? I have a total of three MacBooks and three PCs, but only the MacBooks need to backup to the TC. I handle the PC backups separately.
I am new to the Mac world, but am relatively comfortable with computers. Networking not so much!
Equipment: D-Link DIR 625 attached to a Cisco high speed modem attached to the Comcast all in one digital voice modem. I get the fastest home Internet Comcast can provide.
    1 new MacBook Pro
    2 older model white MacBooks
Also, is there any way I can set up print sharing through the Time Capsule? It doesn't work well over the PC network, and the USB share utility that comes with the D-Link router is terrible.
I have an older HP Laserjet 3030 and a newer Canon Pixma 970. Neither printer is wireless.
Any help you fine people can give me would be much appreciated!
    Thank you!
    Linda H.

OK, thanks for the info. Let's get the TC setup to work with your Macs for backups and then tackle the printing question as a separate item.
Connection wise, you will connect an ethernet cable from one of the available LAN <-> ports on your D-Link to the WAN (circle icon) port on the TC.
To make the TC configuration simpler, rather than using wireless to configure the TC, temporarily connect another ethernet cable from your Mac running Snow Leopard to one of the LAN ports on the TC
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
(You may be asked if you want to update AirPort Utility. If so, go ahead and update and then restart AirPort Utility again.
After you have clicked the Manual Setup button...
Click the Time Capsule tab below the row of icons to assign a name to your TC, device password (write this down) and adjust Time Zone Settings
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
    Wireless Mode = Off
Click the Disks icon above the Time Capsule tab
    Click the File Sharing tab
Make sure there is a check mark next to Enable File Sharing
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update at the lower right and the TC should restart in 15-20 seconds and you should have a green light.
As a check, open your Macintosh HD and look for your Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading on the left side of the panel. If it's there, that's good.
If it's not, click anywhere on the open desktop to display the Finder menus at the top of your computer screen.
Click Finder, then click Preferences, then click the General tab
Under the heading of "show these items on the desktop" make sure that there is a check mark next to "connected servers"
You should now see the TC icon under the SHARED heading. If not, try restarting your computer.
Keep the ethernet cable connected between your Mac and TC for the first complete Time Machine backup as it will go much quicker with ethernet. You can do subsequent backups using wireless since they will only take a few minutes each hour.
Not sure if you want to setup Time Machine at this point or concentrate on the printers.
Please post back on your progress.

  • How can I link Apple TV (Gen1) to Time Capsule (Gen 4)?

    Everyone
I am using a the above mentioned Time Capsule as privat WiFi Network for our devices at home (MacBook Pro, iPhones & iPads). The Time Capsule itself is connected to a DSL Modem by means of an ethernet cable. So far so good.
Newly I have got an Apple TV (Gen1) from a friend of mine and have also connected this device to same DSL Modem again by means of an ethernet cable.
Everything works with ecception of the syncronisation between the Apple TV and iTunes.
Unfortunately, Due to my limited understandig with technical matters I need some support in enabling this function. I guess that the Apple TV should communicate with iTunes within the same network and I suppose that the Apple TV should be linked to the Time Capsule instead of he DSL modem.
Before I do a mess, and have to deal with a reconfiguration some advice would be more then welcome.
Thank you for your time and advice
    Best wishes, Andrea

  • I have reached full memory capacity on my 500GB Time Capsule. I am considering purchasing a 2TB Time Capsule. Do I need to resave all existing data on the new hard drive or can I start afresh? Or can I link both time capsules to operate independantly?

    Hi,
I  have reached full memory capacity on my 500GB Time Capsule. I am considering purchasing a 2TB Time Capsule.
    a) Do I need to resave all existing data on the new hard drive or can I start afresh?
    b) Or can I link both time capsules to operate independantly?
    Thanks,
    Paul

You may not need to buy a new Time Capsule.
You can connect a USB drive to the Time Capsule, and use it in addition to the TC's internal HD.  You may need a powered USB hub as well.
Exactly what is on your TC?  If it's only Time Machine backups, you may not need to do anything -- Time Machine will delete the oldest backup(s) automatically when it needs room for new ones.  But if you have more than about 250 GB on your internal HD, that 500 GB may not be large enough to keep backups long enough.
If you have other data on the TC's internal HD, besides your backups, you could back up to the external HD and use the internal for the other data, or vice-versa.  But TM backups cannot "span" two drives, and you shouldn't mix backups and other data on the TC's internal HD.

  • Link Airport Express to an AirPort Time Capsule to use Airplay?

I am thinking about getting an 2GB AirPort Time Capsule. I use the Airplay feature on my Airport Express that is not part of the AirPort Time Capsule and that is the only reason I have not replaced the Airport Express with the Airport Time Capsule. Has anyone had any experience in setting up a these two units to do what they do together? Any potential problems linking these two units together?

If your intent is to use the new Time Capsule as your "main" Internet router, and then, use the Express for iTunes streaming this can be done without any real issues.
Please check out the following Apple Support article on how to configure an AirPort Express for iTunes.

  • How to connect TP-Link TL-WA850RE(EU) Range extender to airport Time Capsule

please let me know if i can use TP-link range extender to extend my wifi network of my new airport time capule

Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature has been designed to allow other Apple devices to communicate with each other to extend a network wirelessly.
It is unlikely that a 3rd party device could be configured to "extend" a wireless network provided by an Apple router.....but I suppose anything is always possible.
There would be two ways to find out:
    1) Try it out yourself. If you think that you might have it set up, we can give you a connection test to verify that the TP Link device is actually extending the wireless signal.....not simply joining it.
    2) Wait to hear from another user who has the same products who has set this up. Unfortunately, the chances that another user who has the same products will ever see your post are extremely small....but again, anything is possible.
If you have not already purchased a device to extend the Time Capsule network, an AirPort Express could be configured to extend the network literally automatically in about 2 minutes....and...the Express will extend both bands of your dual band Time Capsule.

  • Replace D-link router with Time Capsule

    Hi there,
I have a MacBook Pro and i am using wireless internet access via an old D-link router (in-buit modem). I want to replace this with my new Time Capsule unit, not sure if I need a separate DSL/Cable modem?
    Please advise...
    thanks very much in advance
    bhavnish

What you need depends on where you are located and what type of Internet service you have.
You definitely need a modem in addition to the TC, but it may be possible to utilize your existing D-Link device by setting it to bridge mode.

  • Is it possible to store music on a time capsule and have the music linked to iTunes without taking up space on the computer?

I have a macbook air and a time capsule. I want to store my music on the time capsule without having to transfer the files to my computer to link them to itunes. Is this possible?
    Thanks

Yes, but before going into details, it is not a good idea.  You should always have a backup drive and the Time Capsule (TC) serves as that.  If you place all your iTunes files only on the TC, when the TC drive fails (as it definitely will someday) all your files will be lost because you don't have a backup.*  The solution is to buy yet another external hard drive either as a backup drive or a storage drive.  I believe these can be attached to a TC but I don't have one so I don't know the details.
Options for remote iTunes storage>  One is to put only some media on the external.  Not such a good idea and tricky to manage, but some want music on their comptuer and bulky movies on an external.  Another option is to keep only media on the external and your library files on the internal.  No real advantage unless you have a family with shared media but individual iTunes libraries, plus it can be tricky to do future moves.  The best solution is to move your whole iTunes library to the external.  Drag the whole iTunes folder to the external.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the library.itl file (the library file) in the folder on the external.  Note, the external drive will always have to be attached before starting iTunes or iTunes will revert to putting a library on your internal drive.  If you forget, quit iTunes and re-do the option key start.
*Don't rely upon being able to redownload from Apple.  It's a convenience, not a backup. Some things can't be redownloaded, and all Apple stores is media, not individaual library files which is what you see when you open iTunes.

  • I don't want my Time Capsule to link ti Internet, does anyone know how to achieve this ? Thanks Don

I don't want my Time Capsule to link to Internet, does anyone know how to achieve this ? Thanks Don

    Don,
We have no idea how you have your network set up, or what devices other than a Time Capsule that you might have, so it it impossible to provide an answer for you based on what we know at this time.
Can you provide some details so that we can understand how you have things setup, what devices that you have, etc?
The Time Capsule does need to connect to the Internet to receive firmware updates from Apple, so you would be missing out on some significant things......like a recent important security update....if you try to configure the Time Capsule to connect in the way that you ask about.
Backups will not be "automatic" if you configure the Time Capsule without an Internet connection. You will have to manually switch networks whenever you want to back up, and then switch back again to your "other" network for normal use. Quite a hassle for most users, even if it can be done.

  • How to use Time capsule as Router and link to a Receiver

    Hello
I'm currently using a Time capsule as WLAN Router. The plan is that I'm attaching My NAS via Ethernet LAN to the Time capsule. Time capsule will be linked via the Ethernet LAN cable to My Receiver so that I can Listen My Music over My home loudspeakers.
Can anybody Tell me whether described will work? If yes, are there any setitings in the Air Port Utility I have to consider to make everything work?
    Thank you!

The TC is not a streaming device.. it is merely a hard disk mounted inside a router.
That means My Receiver.. whatever that happens to be.. has to be a media device that can play from a network file store.. So there is no settings in Airport utility.. because the TC is too dumb to need to know anything.
BTW the TC is a bad place to store files, as it has no way to back itself up.

  • Wireless connection between D-Link WiFi router and Time capsule stopped working

We have an ISP provided D-Link wireless router (DIR-615) to which we wirelessly connected our 2Tb Time Capsule for back up and to connect a USB printer to out network. This worked perfectly for 3 1/2 years, until about a month ago, when the time capsule suddenly decided to go "off line". ie we could no longer access it or the printer via our wireless network. We had changed nothing - just one day it stopped working.
We tried to get it back online with no success. As the 2Tb Time Capsule was almost 7 years old and had had some HDD issues in the passed, we figured it had got old and died and that it was time to replace it; so we bought a new 3Tb Time Capsule, thinking this would get everything back to normal.
However much as we tried, we were also unable to get the new 3Tb Time Capsule to connect wirelessly to the D-Link wireless router. The Airport Utility did not show the D-Link wireless router or its wireless network, although we were (and are) able to see it in Systems Preferences>Networks from all our multiple devises. This in itself seemed odd. No matter what we tried, the Airport Utility would not find the D-Link wireless router and hence we could not add the 3Tb Time Capsule to the existing wireless network.
At the end of the day we got fed up with trying to add the 3Tb Time Capsule to the D-Link wireless network, and connected it via a LAN cable to the D-Link router instead. We then set it up as its own network. Worked gerat. Having done that we thought maybe the old 2Tb Time Capsule might not have been the problem after all, so we tried extending our new 3Tb Time Capsule wireless network using the 2Tb Time Capsule wirelessly. This worked perfectly! And we are now almost back to what we wanted.
So although we have a work around, this means now have 2 separate wireless networks as opposed to the original single wireless network where everything talked to everything else.
Can anyone shed any light on any of the following:-
    1. Why the original wireless network connection between the D-Link router and the 2Tb Time Capsule just stopped working? Was there some software change from Apple that "decided" D-Link wireless routers were no longer secure; and therefore the TCs could no longer connect to them?
    2. Why it was not possible to extend the existing D-Link wireless network using the the new 3Tb Time Capsule?
    3. Is there is anyway that we can get back to a single wireless network based around the D-Link wireless router as the primary router connecting to the modem, where the 2 Time Capsules connect as "wireless satellite base stations"?

A firmware update to the TC came along and you agreed to it without perhaps even noticing.. it then smashed your setup because Apple do not recommend the setup you were using and it is very poor.
    2. Why it was not possible to extend the existing D-Link wireless network using the the new 3Tb Time Capsule?
Because it is such a poor setup that Apple have taken away your ability to choose it unless you know exactly what you are doing.
    3. Is there is anyway that we can get back to a single wireless network based around the D-Link wireless router as the primary router connecting to the modem, where the 2 Time Capsules connect as "wireless satellite base stations"?
Yes, this I can help you with.
I have several ways around the problem.. but the first one is.. why use the DIR-615 at all.. it is not a modem.. it is a very ordinary bottom end, poor single band slow wireless router.
Why don't you simply remove the DIR-615 from the network completely.. plug whatever it is the ISP supplies you.. an ethernet connection from whatever that modem is you mentioned into the WAN port of the Time Capsule. And use the TC in some router mode.. same as the DIR-615 was setup.. dhcp or pppoe or whatever.. I doubt the TC cannot match it.
If you have issues please post a few screenshots from the DIR-615 to show how it is setup from the WAN side.. and as long as you are given the username and password or whatever the ISP uses to authenticate then chuck out the DIR-615.
Tell me if that is a goer.. if not we can work out a few other methods..
eg. Simply turn off the wireless in the DIR-615. It is poor cf the TC and there is no need for it.. with the TC in bridge only use the TC for wireless as well as wireless extend with your old TC.
Or setup roaming network where everything uses the same SSID.
Then you will have one wireless network. And it won't matter what as long as it connects.. although IMHO this is not right as the TC is such a superior router now you are wasting your new TC.

  • Replacing D-Link Router with Time Capsule

I purchased a 1TB time capsule tonight so could start pushing my time machine backups out to it instead of a separate partition on my desktop machine. I currently have a D-Link DGL-4500 Wireless router that works pretty good, but since I am integrating the new TC in, I figured I'd just use it in place of the DLink router and keep moving on...The TC Airport Utility for configuration is defintely detailed. First a little about my home network... I have a local Windows 2003 Server domain (myhomenet.local) with the server doing DHCP and DNS. I have a DNS forwarder to my ISP also. With the current DLink router, it gets its address from my ISP via DHCP, then I disable LAN side DHCP on the router (since my server is handling it). I manually assign a LAN side IP address of 192.168.1.1
The Airport settings were most definitely a little different. It wasn't very obvious to me how to duplicate the settings I had with the DLink. The TC got an IP address from my ISP fine, but I saw no way to disable the DHCP inside of it. I read a little about "Bridge Mode" but wasn't sure if that was the correct direction to go. I didn't see a way to manually assign a LAN side IP address either.
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

You control the NAT & DHCP services of the TC by making a "Connection Sharing =" selection within the AirPort Utility.
You basically have three options: 1) Share a public IP address (NAT & DHCP are enabled), 2) Distribute a range of IP addresses (NAT is disabled; DHCP is enabled), or 3) Off (Bridge Mode) (both NAT & DHCP are disabled)
So in your case, the only option which DHCP is disabled would be the last one: Bridge Mode. In Bridge mode, the TC will be a "pass-thru" device. It will perform as both a Wireless Access Point and Ethernet switch.
I didn't see a way to manually assign a LAN side IP address either.
In Bridge mode, with NAT disabled, there is no longer a WAN or LAN side. However, the TC should be accessible by its provided IP address. In this case, it would be your Win2K3 server.

  • WIFI problem when linking two Time Capsule

    Hello community,
I hope you can help me out here so that I will finally know if I'm doing something wrong or it's just a bug. I own two Time Capsule, an old first 500GB model and a newer 1TB simultaneous double band model.
I set up my network with the 1TB model and I chose to link all the 802.11n devices I own (MacBook, iMac, 500GB Time Capsule etc) over the 5GHz network and all the others such iPhone, PS3, printer over the 2.4GHz network.
The kernel is that if I try to connect the 500GB TC model (in order to extend my network and yes, the 1TB model is allowed to be extended) using the 5GHz network I experience problems: green light followed by the amber light...the HDD boots up and the TC connect again but the problem persist...it just keeps connecting/disconnecting.
On the other hand, If I link the 500GB TC over the 2,4GHz network it just works fine.
Believe me, I tried resetting many times but nothing happened...I had to switch back to 2,4GHz network in order for it to work properly.
How can it be? I know that the first TC model can work over 5GHz just fine....(I remember that you could choose which frequency you could use).....so I'm a little astonished...¬¬
Am I missing something or is it a bug?
    Greetings from Spain

Did you assign a separate name to the 5 GHz network on our AirPort Extreme
Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    Click the Wireless Options tab
Assign a separate name for the 5 GHz network
    Then, on the Time Capsule
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Wireless Mode would be "Extend a wireless network"
Wireless Network Name would be the exact name of the 5 GHz network that you setup
Security = Same as Airport Extreme
Password = Same as AirPort Extreme
I confirmed that this does work. Does this help you there?
