Linking AirPort Extreme to my bt home hub

I have bought a 2tb AirPort Extreme for back ups and stronger wireless at home but as part of set up to my existing bt modem am getting error messages which pale or bt can't fix. When using the airport utility it keeps on asking for PPPoE details which BT say I don't need, any advice please

Should I be connected to LAN  or WAN port?
I said LAN port on the BT router.. since WAN port is not available.. on the TC it makes no difference wan or lan but by convention we say WAN.. in bridge the WAN port is joined to LAN.
Connect using DHCP, IPv4 address 169.254.102.175
This is self generated IP .. you have no connection.
have blank IPv6 DNS Servers box and don't know a what to add
Nothing you don't need ipv6. You need it on the computer for the link to the TC.. not the TC to the internet.
I have just give the full manual method to connect to a BThome hub.
Please follow this .. it is rather more complicated than it needs to be because apparently the airport utility is failing to set it correctly.. therefore do the whole thing manually.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6169029?tstart=0#
This was done for a Time Capsule.. TC.. In your case it is Airport Extreme.. please just read TC = AE.
1. Factory reset the TC.
The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
2. Plug it by ethernet into your computer. Open the ethernet in your system preferences/ networking.
Ensure you have IPv6 set link-local.
Your IP address should show 10.0.1.2
3. Open the airport utility. Go to the top menu.. Click on Configure Other.
4. Type in the IP address, exactly as shown. No password is needed. Click OK.
5. You will now open the manual setup pages of the TC. This is new screen that will come up.
Since you are doing it manually you must go through all the pages and and give it the right settings.
6. Click on base station. Type in a name.. short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
eg.
7. Click on the internet tab. Set to dhcp.
8. Click on the wireless tab and set as below.. Create a wireless network.. use a suitable name, short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Also set wireless security password and use WPA2 personal.
9. Click on the Network tab.
Choose off (bridge mode). Then at the bottom click update.
10. Wait for the TC to restart.. unplug it.. it won't work now plugged into the computer. It must now be connected to your main router to function.
Plug the WAN port of the TC.. the one with sunburst symbol.. to the BT router LAN port by ethernet.
On the Mac connect to the TC wireless which you set at step 8. Type in the password for wireless you just set.
Follow this exactly and it will work.

    Hi,
Is it possible to add additional links to Other link section of TFS web access home hub page?
    Thanks in advance,

    I have TFS 2013 with update 4.
I didn't see any issue. but when you need to upgrade your tfs, your website also need to be upgrade.
so I think the code you made will disappear.

  • How to connect airport time capsule to BT home hub 4

I am finding it difficult to connect my new airport time capsule (ATC) to the BT home hub 4. On opening the time machine it asks me to configure the time capsule before using. Should I be using the ATC as time machine only or should I be re-routing wireless from the ATC.

Make sure the MBA has ipv6 set to link-local only for wireless.
I strongly recommend using short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    eg TCgen5 and TCwifi
In fact if you keep having wireless issues.. with the MBA in the same room as the TC, change the wireless name to TC24ghz and TC5ghz so you have different names for both bands and see if that doesn't help.. try to connect to this band and then the other.
Use WPA2 personal security.. password 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
Do not hide the wireless.. that is against the code and simply leads to issues.
If you still have issues.. post back.. does the MBA work ok on other routers or wireless access points??

  • Airport Extreme and adding a USB Hub

I added a Belkin USB Hub to my airport extreme and with my MAC computer it cannot find anything plugged into it.  Is there a recommended Hub to use, mine is Belkin?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
A USB port of the AirPort Extreme supports a hub, always that you plug printers and displays > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2421
If devices connected to the hub are not recognized, return it and get another hub. There is no hub recommended as all of them should work, but I recommend you to get a USB 2.0 hub

  • Airport Extreme and USB/Firewire Combo Hub

This has probably been covered before and I didn't find it. So I apologize...
I bought the new Airport Extreme and a firewire/usb combo hub so that I could connect my external HDs (3 are firewire and 1 is USB) - the USB is the only one that is working....
Any Ideas? (Besides putting the Firewire back on the desk top and sucking it up!)
    Thanks,
    Tim

I have a related question. I want to buy a triple interface drive (ethernet, USB, Firewire). The plan is to connect the drive an ethernet port on an Airport Extreme. The question is - can I later 'daisychain' on an additional firewire drive?
So the first drive would be connected via ethernet and the second connected to the first via firewire.
Based on Niel's post, I am guessing this won't work. Comments?
Also, are there certain brands that are known to play particularly nicely with Leopard when hooked up as ethernet network drives?

  • Can I connect use 2 airport extremes in an in home network, each at a different ethernet access point?

Can I use 2 airport extremes in the same in home network, each at a different ethernet drop point?

Hi - without knowing anything else about the network and assuming that you mean that they are connected via ethernet to the main router, the answer is yes - they would be configured in bridge mode to "Create a Wireless Network" (because they are hardwired) with the same name and password as the home network.

  • Why does a "linked" AirPort Extreme suddenly report problems?

I am stumped. I have a home network consisting of a new dual-band AirPort Extreme (which works flawlessly), an AirPort Express (which only rarely has problems) and an older "n" AirPort Extreme, which has recently begun to report problems on a daily basis. This is how it happens: I will be online with my MacBook (and I should add that no one else is online) and suddenly AirPort Utility will launch with the following message:
AirPort Utility found an AirPort Extreme with 802.11n (Fast Ethernet) that is reporting problems.
(Please note that this is NOT the AirPort Extreme I am connected to; I am connected to the 5 GHz band on the new AirPort Extreme.) When I attempt to resolve the problem by clicking Continue, or click on Manual Setup, I get the following message:
An error occurred while reading the configuration.
Make sure your Apple wireless device is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6753)
The only way I can get the problematic AirPort Extreme to work is to do a hard reset and manually re-enter all settings. It then connects to the network perfectly -- until the same problem pops up the next day. What gives?

Is it possible one of your Airports isn't configured as a bridge, and is creating an IP address conflict?
You've "hard reset" the Extreme, but perhaps it's your other Extreme or the Express that's started to misbehave, leading you to think the problem is elsewhere. Have you reset them?
I'm reaching here; these are just two things that come to mind quickly.

  • Airport Extreme and My Book Home Edition 1TB external drive

Connecting the My Book Drive to Airport Extreme and entering passcode for A.E. causes it to turn off. Is this normal? Western Digital also claims that this drive cannot be shared this way and that their network drive needs to be used. Any thoughts on this? Is there a list of compatible drives?
    thanks in advance.

Sounds like I have a similar problem, although I am able to browse the network drive for a bit before it decides to disconnect. To reconnect I have to reset the AE. My drive is a seagate 'desktop', not sure if there is a compatible list, but I have tried others which did the same thing. Now I've decided to just use a USB hub to connect all my drives to, not ideal but it is simple

  • How can i access my hdd hooked to my airport extreme base station at home, from another place,office,school..?

i have an airport extreme base station ,i conneted a hdd and i want to acces the hdd with my macbook from another place ...office...school....

I would appreciate if someone could tell me how the AirPort Extreme differs from any regular router.
The AirPort Extreme is a combination router, wireless access point, and Ethernet switch. It also provides both external USB hard drive and printer sharing. So, it is not much different than most other routers on the market today. The one main difference is how you administer it. Unlike most other routers that employ a web-based administration interface, the AirPorts use a dedicated utility, called the AirPort Utility.
I do not have any OS X devices, but I have a lot of iOS devices.  If my understanding is correct, I can set up the AirPort from an iOS device.
Yes. There are versions of the AirPort Utility for OS X, Windows, or iOS devices.
Also, I need to know how I would connect my Synology NAS system to the AirPort Extreme network via an Ethernet cable.  I would need to be able to acces the files on the NAS through Windows clients.  My Synology NAS currently has a web interface....would I still be able to access that web interface with the AirPort?
Your Synology NAS would connect to the AirPort Extreme pretty much the same as for any other manufacturer's routers. That is, you would connect it to one of the available LAN (opposing arrows) ports on the Extreme. You would still use the same web-based interface as before.
Note: When connected to an Ethernet port, the NAS would still function as usual. The AirPort Extreme would not provide any file sharing functionality when connected in this manner. All file sharing features would be the responsibility of the NAS device.

  • Airport Extreme wireless on a home network

We just moved out of an apartment where I had my Extreme setup as my router for everything.  Our new house is wired in every room and it is hooked to a Netgear JGS524 24 port router and the Extreme is just doing the wireless now. Before I could see my other computers on the network because they were hooked to the same network but now my wireless devices only see eachother. What do I need to change in the Extreme to be able to see everything on my network. I'm sure once I fix this issue I will be able to use my air play on my Yamaha receiver.
    Thank you for the help
    Chris

it might be a good idea to review again on exactly what you have on the network.
Your first post mentioned that you had a Netgear router and Netgear 24 port switch.
We took that at face value......a Netgear router and a Netgear 24 port switch.
With a Netgear router "upstream" on the network, the correct setting for an AirPort Extreme would be Bridge Mode as both Tesserax and I mentioned previously.
Please clarify on exactly what you have.....
    What modem?
    What router?
    What switch?
Then......diagram the network to illustrate the basic the signal flow from the Internet through the network. Example.......
    Internet > Motorola SB6141 Cable Modem > Netgear ABC123 Router > Netgear JGS524 Switch > Devices
Where does the AirPort Extreme tie into your network?

  • I'm trying to connect to a VPN (Buffalo Technology) from home over Airport Extreme (5th Generation)

    Hi all,
I just purchased a 5th generation Airport Extreme to replace my home router. I previously had a Linksys wireless G which gave up on me. I've got a handful of computers that will be hooked up to the router. One of them is a Windows machine and it needs to be able to VPN into work. The VPN is a product from Buffalo Technology. I don't have much further information than that right now.
When I try to connect to the VPN it connects using "WAN Miniport (PPTP)" then verifies the user name and password then tries to connect to "WAN Miniport (SSTP)." The next message is "Connecting to _____ useing WAN Miniport (L2TP)'... When I get to this step a new window pops up and shows the following error message:
Error 800: The remote connection was not made because the attempted VPN tunnels failed. The VPN server might be unreachable. If this connection is attempting to use an L2TP/IPsec tunel, the security parameters required for IPsec negatiation might not be configured properly.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? I didn't have these problems on the other router when it was still in business. Thanks ahead of time for anyone who has suggestions.

What this is telling you is that the Buffalo VPN client is attempting to establish a secure connection to your company's VPN server/applicance using each of the common VPN connection methods. Since it was unable to establish a secure connection, its attempt to create a VPN tunnel has failed.
Typically, IPsec is used to establish a secure connection. For IPsec to work through a NAT firewall, UDP port 500 (for Internet Key Exchange IKE) & UDP port 4500 (for IPsec NAT-T) must be opened. This is offered as IPsec Passthrough on most consumer routers ... except the AirPorts. That is because, by default, they already have these ports opened for VPN as they are known as "VPN Passthrough" devices.
I would ask your work's IT for assistance on how to properly configure the Buffalo VPN client to work with your new router. It may have been configured for the earlier router and those settings may no longer apply.

  • Can't see my External HDD via Airport Extreme & powered hub

I have Windows 7 laptop and it just can't seem to detect my HDD via the Airport Extreme wired through a powered hub. If I connect HDD directly to my laptop it can see the files.
First I had problems with seeing my printer and found out that I had to install Bonjour and that worked. Is there some kind of program to make my HDD accessible?

    Mekhaiia wrote:

of course there is an easy way, however, it entails erasing all data on the drive. do you have access to a spare, "temporary", drive ?

  • Airport Extreme 2nd Gen - can not retrieve or assign an IP address

I had two 2nd gen Airport Extreme base stations. One connects to the internet, the other bridges the network to my office where I have wired devices connected. The office base station was no longer allowing me to connect to my USB drive for time machine backups, but all of the wired devices were routing to the internet properly.
I purchased a new base station (5th gen), bringing my total to three extreme stations and two express base stations (one express for an old wired network printer, the other for streaming music).
The old main base station is moved into the office, and the new base station (5th gen) becomes the "main" internet access point. I reset both devices and they install without a hiccup. Ditto the new express stations - they connect without having to reset them. Everything works as it did before the upgrade.
I take the old office base station (the one that would not allow me to backup via time machine) and do a factory reset. It reboots, the light flashes yellow (not surprising). I hook an old macbook (10.6.8) up to the old base station (and turned off the wifi) using a wired ethernet cable the ethernet port is assigned an IP address (10.0.1.2) via DHCP. My other macbook pro (10.8.5) running the latest AirPort Utility sees the old base station using wifi (under other wifi network). I select the old base station it automatically connects it to my new base station stating:
"This Airport Extreme will now be set up to extend <my new 5th gen AirPort Extreme base station>"
I change the default name and click next.
Now when the old office base station boots it will not connect to the network - it still flashes yellow. It will not assign itself an IP address, the macbook plugged into the ethernet port (using dhcp) shows (under network settings):
"Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the internet."
    (the 169.... number)
Now the funky part. I manually set the wired ethernet's IP4 configuration (IP, subnet, router and dns server) on the old Macbook running snow leapord (10.6.8) - remember the wifi is turned off - and bingo - I am connected to the internet. All the while my old AirPort Exreme continues to blink yellow. If I manually assign an IP address to the AirPort Exreme's light turns green.
Clearly the old device is working. The ethernet port works, the wifi works - routing traffic from the wired ethernet through my home network and out to the internet. My AirPort utility on all my macs can see the base station, and can configure it (via wifi). I have even tried (via wifi) downgrading the firmware to 7.6.3 and then to 7.6.0 and the back up to 7.6.4. The only thing it will not do is give retrieve an IP address, or assign an IP address to wired devices.
    Any ideas?

I attempted to see/access (via the Disk Utility on my iMac) two drives already connected to my AirPort Extreme, but could not.
These drives are shared "network" drives, which Disk Utility cannot access. Disk Utility will only be able to access a drive if it is connected directly to a Mac.
If you need to format the drive(s), partition them, etc., you must do so with the drive connected directly to the Mac, then move them to the USB powered hub location at the AirPort Extreme.
These drives are available through the Finder and are used for Time Machine
Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups to a drive connected to the AirPort Extreme, but some users seem to be able to make this work.
    1) Can I see/access USB drives (properly fomatted and visible/accessible in the Finder window) attached to my AirPort Extreme (2nd gen-firmware version 7.6.2)via a powered USB hub?
Probably. Some users find that one powered hub will work for them while another might not. To "see" the drives, you must first click on the AirPort Extreme icon under the SHARED heading in the Finder. Then, if the drives are formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), each drive will appear as a folder. Double click the folder name to mount the drive on the desktop.
    2) Can I use my iMac (running Lion 10.7.4) to create a concatenated disk set with USB drives (of varying size) attached to my AirPort Extreme via a powered USB hub?
The drives will all appear as separate drives, which must be accessed separately. If you were thinking of trying to start Time Machine backups on one drive and have them continue automatically on another drive when the first drive is full, that will not work.

  • Air port extreme connection to BT Home

Hi just bought AirPort Extreme, I have BT home broadband I understand that the AirPort Extreme router cannot replace the bt router but has to work connected in line?

The BT Home Hub is a combination modem/router or gateway device. The AirPort Extreme does not include the modem portion and only performs the router part ... so they are not interchangeable.
You can still use the AirPort Extreme, but how you configure it will depend on your overall networking goals for both the BT and AirPort devices.

  • Using an AirPort Extreme to extend my network

Hi, I am an astronomy fanatic and am looking for the best way to connect my Sphinx SXD2 Vixen mount to my network. It has a LAN Port. My ideas is to purchase an additional AirPort Extreme which will wirelessly extend my network from my home to my observatory outside and then connect my MacMini and Vixen Mount to it.
This way I can control everything from inside my house where it is nice and warm.
Will this work? Can an AirPort Extreme act as a wireless hub?
    Thanks
    Herbert

You basically asked the same question yesterday except this one mentions an AirPort Extreme.
    The same information applies.
