Linking display to mirror on second monitor

I have a new Macbook Pro.
I give talks and want to use another larger LCD monitor on a stand to display the images of my talk.
I did this with my previous Sony laptop but I am not having success with the Macbk.
I have an Apple adapter to connect the laptop to the monitor and it displays the screensaver which is showing on the laptop.
It does not show the desktop nor anything else.
How do I get the monitor to show the same as the laptop?
Cheers and thanks.

I,ve written it down so I don't forget.

  • Mirroring on second monitor. How?

Until we can use an external monitor, I am trying to mirror FCP X on the external monitor. I purchased a mini display to HDMI cable and it works. But...when I mirror the display, my resolution changes on my iMac. What is the proper procedure for doing this?
    Best.
    Tom

The two monitors have to negotiate a common resolution, so the same screen can show on both.  That "same screen", or "mirroring" requires they both be the same resolution.  This is normal.  HDMI is not really the best way to get a second monitor hooked up, unless you're using an HDTV monitor.  In which case remember that TV's, even HDTV's are of lower resolution than computer monitors, by a good magnitude.
So, do NOT turn on mirroring, no!  What you want is for the second monitor to just be a second, non-mirrored monitor.  Then in FCP X, go to the Window menu, and there you can chose to show the Viewer (my personal preference) or the Browser on the second monitor.
For even more real estate, I also set to use Full Screen mode at the bottom of the Window menu (Cntrl+Cmd+F)

  • Cinema Display M8149 as a second monitor??

    Hello -
GREAT COMMUNITY! I have an older iMac (mid 2006) with a mini DVI input on the back.
I recently acquired an older Cinema Display (product # M8149) that I would LOVE to use
    as a second display.
I know (at least I think I do ??) that I need this adapter...
    http://www.amazon.com/Apple-M8661LL-Display-Adapter-4038234011420/dp/B00011KHT2
Correct?? If so, I'm also sure I need an additional adapter to connect to it, to them be able
to connect it to this older iMac with the mini DVI input (I sound like a fool!!). Please correct
    me if I'm wrong...
So, my question is...can someone point me to the CORRECT adapter I need at the end
    of this chain?
Any input would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks in advance, and PLEASE continue the GREAT support guys.

  • Displaying Library on a second monitor.

I precisely followed all detailed instructions for this feature. Both monitors display identical information. Can't get it to work as described. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

The dual display feature does work, but what you have does not sound like a  dual dispaly setup.
You have to get the operating system to display two different monitors;  if you set it so that they are basically copies of the same one monitor, LR will not override that.  First setup your OS to see two different displays, then LR will see them as well.
One way to test it is you should only have one mouse pointer;  you should be able to move the mouse from one monitor to the other.  If you have two mouse pointers, you have only one display setup for both monitors.
Are you running mac or windows?
    Cheers!

  • Triple display. no mirroring. imac 3 monitors. possible?

I am wanting to add a third VGA display to a media-purpose imac at my business.
    —example:
    (external 1) (internal) (external 2)
i do not want to mirror the third display.
    1. is this possible?
    2. what is the best way to accomplish it (what adapters/devices do i need)?
I already have a miniDisplay to VGA for the current external display.
I have looked at VGA splitters, but they only seem to support mirroring (external 1) and (external 2).
    All help appreciated.

  • No playback on second monitor all of a sudden (on several computers here)

    Hey Guys,
Just yesterday several of our computer were all of a sudden not able to display playback on their second monitors...
This is very strange considering nothing was changed. Everything is set up correctly, with the monitor switched on and displaying the desktop.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.. at the moment I have resorted to displaying the program monitor on the second one.

    Thanks Kevin!
I followed the instructions in that link you sent and that seems to have tricked it back into working...
Here they are below for anyone with troubles:
"I talked with Tech support and they were able to help me solve the issue.  The solution involved moving my program onto the second monitor and then reversing the option setting (Ie, make the primary monitor my playback monitor)... after that I switched it back by moving the program to the primary monitor and set the secondary monitor as my playback monitor.  Seems to work fine now.

  • Graphics problems with my second monitor...

Ever since I updated to Lion, I get some display problems with my second monitor (a Samsung LED XL2370).
Single windows appear darker and with bad graphics, especially when dragging from the normal monitor to the external one or openign them..
And after 'waking' my MacBook from sleep today, the background image of the normal display was missing. It was just a grey screen, but perfectly functional. And nothing changed when I checked the display settings and tried changing the background.
    Any ideas??
A screenshot with both problems in it.. Acrobat Reader was sitting between two monitors, the right display is the external one

After 10.7.3 i was optimistic apple finally fixed the bug....but it seems that they were not successfull or just didn't care....
I'm seriusly really sour about the rapidly decreasing quality apple delivers.....thinking more and more about switching back to linux again....

I want to use my apple TV as a second monitor not a mirrored one, in other words, I want to use my TV as a second screen not a copy of my first screen, other people have asked this question but have been given mirroring answers so I am spelling it out here very specifically. I want a second display. This should be possible and would be awesome. Anyone know how to do this?

Nevermind I just installed it to try it and it's awesome, so happy right now, Thanks. All the things I had read about it on third party sites led me to believe it could not do extended desk tops, thanks for your help!

  • How to connect my Cinema Display as a second monitor

I just purchased a new 27-inch iMac, and I explained to the Apple folks that I had a 17-inch cinema display (silver clad model) that I wanted to connect, for a dual monitor set up. They told me just to get the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter, but I was surprised to realize that's not going to work.
Can anyone tell me how to do this, and what connector is actually needed? I have the big old white power brick that I bought to daisy chain my old 17 and 23 inch displays with my old configuration (Mac Pro).
Or can you not have a second monitor with an iMac?
    Thanks in advance.

  • What do i need to connect my 30" cinema display as a second monitor to my new 27" imac?

I recently purchased a new iMac and want to run my 30" cinema display as a second monitor. My local mac experts told me to use a mini display to dvi adaptor, but that didn't work for any of my cinema displays - the 30" that i want to use and a 21" that I have. I called the guys back up and after a little research, he told me to get a mini display port to dual link dvi adapter. This costs $99, so I want to be sure it's going to work.
Does anyone know if this will work, or if there is a better idea, or ****, does the new iMac even except a 2nd monitor.
Thanks. Looking forward to your input.

Well I may have heard wrong, but I do not believe that you can hook that 6 year old monitor to the latest 27" iMacs with ThunderBolt. I would do more research before putting out the bucks, or make sure that you can return it if it does not work.
But do let us know if you try it and it works.

  • I'm about to buy a 27" i-Mac. I would like to connect my 30" Cinema Display to it as a second monitor. What will I need to do that? Will this slow down the overal performance?

The new iMacs do not come with a MiniDisplayPort, they have Thunderbolt, so unless you are talking about purchasing one of the previous generation iMacs such as this refurbished model in the online Apple store, it won't work. And yes, if you are going to get the full range of video resolutions you will need the Dual-Link version.
For details see the store's web page on the Dual-Link display adapter.

  • Second monitor displays weird colors

    Hi there,
Yesterday I bought a Displayport to HDMI adapter (Mini DisplayPort Male - HDMI female) for my MacBook Pro 15" (Late 2011 version). I use this to connect my MacBook Pro to my Philips 32" television. Everything has been set up (I've adjusted the resolution of the TV to 1080p and put my refresh rate to 50 hz since my TV doesn't support 60 hz). But once in every 5 - 15 minutes or so, my screen turns green for a brief second and suddenly my background or whatever is on my second monitor turns in to weird colors. Sometimes it takes about 2 or 3 seconds and it switches back to how it normally was, but sometimes it takes way longer. I don't mirror my screen, I use it as a second display. But I can't figure out why the screen it switching betweens there colors and don't know how to fix it. I've looked it up on the internet, but couldn't find anything useful. So I hope you guys could help me with this.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Second Display only Mirrors the first.

I just tried to attach a second display to my iBook G4 1.25 and all it does is show the same thing on the second display. ie the desktop is not extended. There seems to be no option for "arrangement"in system preferences either.
Is this right, or is there a way round this?

That is correct. The iBook is only designed to mirror the main display on a second monitor.
There is a firmware "hack" that allows you to extend the desktop but it's not supported by Apple and is likely to invalidate your warrantee.
If you need an extended desktop then a PowerBook or PowerMac is the way to go.

  • Extending display with second monitor

I am trying to add a second monitor to expand my desktop area. I routinely do this with my G5 laptop by simply plugging in a second monitor, clicking on DISPLAY in SYSTEM PREFS, clicking ARRANGEMENT, and clicking off MIRROR DISPLAYS.
With the iMAC G5 ARRANGEMENT does not appear as an option and default seems to be mirror. Any way to make this work?

This is an update to my previous post. I searched on Google about this problem and found an answer -- an old Macworld article:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/39969/2004/10/imacscreenspanning.html
It describes a freeware program called Screen Spanning Doctor. I printed out the page and followed the instructions. It worked! I now have a Samsung SyncMaster 930B set at 1280 x 1024 and my iMac G5 set at 1440 x 900 (maximums for both) and They are not mirrored; the Samsung monitor extends the desktop of my iMac G5. I couldn't be happier.
Just in case Screen Spanning Doctor does not work for you, be sure to print out this Apple support document, Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US
You can never be too careful. I believe what this will do is undo whatever changes Screen Spanning Doctor does. Per the Readme:
"This program is intended to unlock some features of the graphics hardware in some Macs (iBook, iMac, eMac but not for all models - you can find a complete list at my website http://macparts.de/ibook). On supported Macs it will allow the use of an extended desktop where usually only mirrored mode is available. This enables you to use an external display to extend your workspace. It will also unlock additional resolutions for the external display making it possible to driver high-resolution screens. This is especially nice if you want to use an LCD panel that has a higher native resolution than the 1024*768 of the internal display. After you apply the patch you should see an additional tab in the displays prYou will only see this tab if you have at least the monitor adapter plugged in."
Good luck! (I'm going to make a donation to macparts.de, which created this program. I figure it's worth $19 -- what I paid for the VGA display adapter at the Apple Store.

  • Can my computer display 'extended desktop' with a second monitor?

I believe I have a G4 Quicksilver 867 (2001) (bought it used and figuring out which model G4 is not that easy). I recently got a second monitor, but I only seem to have the option to have a mirrored setup (which works well). Is there anything I can do or rather what are my options to get it to show extended desktop. My video card is
    Chipset Model: GeForce2 MX
    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    Slot: SLOT-1
    VRAM (Total): 32 MB
    Vendor: nVIDIA (0x10de)
    Device ID: 0x0110
    Revision ID: 0x00a1
    ROM Revision: 1049
Will I have to get a new graphics card or is there a workaround of some sort?

Thanks, not what I wanted to hear, but helpful. hope you'll answer a couple of questions. I bought this computer as a second (do taxes, surf the internet, connected to my wireless router, escape my three kids wanting to use the primary). I've been very happy with it for its limited use (my primary is one of the first Imac G5's).
1st: Do you think it's worth putting a faster processor in it? My G5 has the latest OS, but I'm hesitant to go past 10.411 with the G4 867
2nd: Would you recommend a video card update to run extended desktop?
3rd: Can you run extended desktop on the original IMAC G5's (1.8 ghz, GeForce FX 5200, 64 mb ram)?
