Linking files on my iDisk

Hi,
I need to create a simple page with links to some files residing on my iDisk.
How do i do that?
There are templates with video, photos and podcasts, but no templates to include links to music files.
How can I solve that?
Thank you.

You can point the hyperlink at any file on your computer. Put the file into a folder and give it the "name" that you want to appear in the link. Highlight the folder and "ZIP" it by going to Finder/File/Create Archive. Now you will have a little brown parcel with the .zip extension.
Create your link in iWeb, choose "link to a file" in the "link" inspector and select your ZIP from the "choose" menu.
The file data is now embedded in your web page data and will download when the link is clicked in the browser.
You can put files in your iDisk Public folder and allow people to access it to upload and download.
They can access it from Finder/Go/iDisk/Other user's public folder.

Any webspace that provides enough data transfer to cope with your podcasts will do fine. Although check the terms & conditions of whichever webhost you go for, as some may have restrictions on just using their webspace for externally linked files, rather than a website as well.
How much data transfer your podcasts use will depend on how popular they are. MobileMe webhosting allowed 200GB of data transfer per month. If you never went over that, then as long as the new host matches or exceeds that you'll be ok.

  • ID CS4 Anti-Alias problems with Linked files

All the linked files i have put into Indesign CS 4 whether they are PSD, Tiff, layered or flat have shown up slightly pixelated. When i print the same file from its native program (in this case Photoshop CS4) the files print clean and crisp and the text and artwork have clean edges but when i link the file into an Indesign CS4 doc and then print it off, the file comes out fairly clean but there are jagged lines on the text and art.

I now understand your question and yes in the graphics tab in my Indesign print settings I have it set to send all data. I exported the indesign file as a high res PDF and the output on the printer was the same. I don't believe its a printer setting because when i switch my display performace from typical to high-res the text and art from the linked file look pixalated. On the layered psd file the text files are not converted and yet when displayed through ID CS4 the text looks fuzzy and slightly pixalated.
Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Unable to open linked files in new CS3 install

One of my clients just purchased a new PC (Dell Inspiron 537S) with Windows Vista Home Premium to replace his old Inspiron 530 (also running Vista HP). After installing CS3 Design Studio and attaching an external drive loaded with his file archive, all of his Illustrator files which include links load with the following error:
"An error occurred trying to read the linked file "file.xxx". Choose Repair to locate the missing file, Replace to select another file or Ignore to leave the link unchanged."
This shouldn't be unusual, if the path to a linked file has changed, you'd need to point the link to the new path, but clicking Repair or Replace and browsing to the linked file (which invarably is in the same directory as the .ai file, and is usually a .psd which opens just fine in Photoshop) just cycles back to the same error message, ad infinitum. After about 30 tries, I got one of the links to load correctly, resaved the document, thinking that would repair it, but when I opened it again, got the error.
These files were created on multiple computers, and none of the other computers (all with CS3) have ever had any trouble opening them. This despite the drive letter on the external drive being unstable on the old system (would often be J:, K: or L:, and images always worked).
Any new .ai files we create on this file which have links all work fine.
Manually replacing the links in a file is not an option for two reasons:
    1. There are thousands of .ai files in this archive, and re-linking images in them will take weeks.
    2. It simply doesn't work. I tried ignoring the error on one file to load it, and re-linking the .psd backgrounds to re-save it, and the images still didn't load after re-linking them.
I have already tried doing a factory-restore of the system and reinstalling CS3, making sure that there were no errors in the install. What else might cause this behavior, and how can I resolve it?

Outdated permissions on the files from your old computer. Right-click, Properties --> Security --> Advanced, disable Inherit settings from parent folders, chose to copy. After that, delete outdated security keys and assign current ones. You may even need to go so fart as to Take Ownership of some files to correctly restore the new system's default security settings.

  • Can I open .ai file w/ text editor and edit linked file path?

I want to relink a placed file in a lot of illustrator files to a new file with a different name. I've tried setting up various actions but it is not doing what I need. If I open the file in a text editor such as Notepad++ or Text Wrangler, I can find the linked file path in two places, if I edit this path and save the file (still with .ai extension) I thought the link would change, but when I reopen the file, it does not change. Any ideas?
If I make an action to relink a file, the action will only place a new file but not replace the old one. I also can't get it to place into a specific layer.
    Any ideas?

CSS files are plain text with no links, so what you see is all there is.
In order to apply CSS to HTML, you need a <link> tag in your HTML.
If you install the Web Developer Extension from the Firefox add-ons site, there is a handy "Edit CSS" sidebar that lets you play with style rules and see the effects live. Note that this pane is not saved, so if you switch tabs, you lose your changes. Make sure to copy out any changes you want to remember.

  • Can you place linked files into Photoshop CS4?

If you place a .psd or .tif file into an InDesign file, you are alerted if any changes are made to that file (as I'm sure most of you know). Is there any way to do this within Photoshop? I have several dozen carpet sample .tif files that are to be used in several hundred "montage" type "carpet sample groups" layered .psd files that will then be saved as images for the web (does that make sense?). Is there any way to do this so that if there's a change in the original .tif file it will automatically change any .psd file in which it's being used? I know the easiest way to do this is in InDesign, but I have two problems: 1) the conversion from InDesign to a web image is laborious, and 2) the person doing the work does not know InDesign at all. I can show him how to use it, but that's a small part of the battle.
Any suggestions? I'm using CS4 for Windows.
    Thanks,
    Lloyd

Thanks for your comments. The problem arises because we have to create that intermediate Photoshop step.
We have, say, a dozen individual carpet swatches that are used to create hundreds of combinations (which are all separate layered .psd files). If one swatch changes (color, for example), then we have to open every .psd file in which that swatch appears and change it (or place the changed one). I'd love to be able to change the original and have it update every layered file in which it appears, just like InDesign does with placed/linked files.
    Maybe there's a plug-in (wishful thinking)?
Also, I'd really like to have it changed in the web development end of things, but we're working with a company that is (obviously) using templates and we can only give them single images, hence the need to create the intermediate Photoshop files.

  • How to make the images show up on a linked file in Muse?

I am wondering how to get my images to show up on the linked files in Muse.  Basically, in Muse, I have a page that links to other pages I designed in Dreamweaver.  I put the images in the image folder and when I upload the site, the page links to the Dreamweaver page ok but the images are missing.  This is a vital part of the site.  Any suggestions?

If you made the pages with Dreamweaver then they should be on your system some place and you could make a "dreamweaver" folder inside your Muse site and upload the pages to that folder using the upload files option... see this thread talks about sound files but almost any file can be imported to muse
I need a recommendation for a slick way to embed audio
    Another option is to link across to an online resource using the built in muse html editor but that has pit falls because once you link yourself outside the site you also lose some control of the content;
For an example of this have a look at an old demo page I made http://chec-garry2.businesscatalyst.com/index.html
When you click on the Brahminy Kite bird you are looking at what used to be called an Iframe but the problem of control is highlighted when you click the Blue Wren and sometimes get pop up adds… I could import the Blue Wren page into my Muse site to fix this issue and in your case that’s a good option but I didn’t because I don’t have copyright over that pages contents and didn’t want to steal someone else’s work.
p.s. if you have got a demo of the  website/ pages online someplace that would help us see your problem.

  • Is there a way for photoshop to AUTO UPDATE all linked files after modified?

Using the new Photoshop 2014 (version).
This is a very frustrating task for anyone using a lot of linked files.
As a web developer, I may have 50 files that contain one linked element.  If I go edit that element, I then have to find the layer on each and every file it's contained in and click "Update Modified Content".  There HAS to be an easier way.  I really hope I'm missing something here.
Thanks to everyone looking to help.

OK. Now I see what you meant.
And you correctly understand workaround instruction. The problem is it does not work and I don't know why.
I'm not so familiar with Automator and indeed seldom use it except for a simple services wrapper under 10.6. So I don't know of any workflows off the shelf which use "Ask for Confirmation" action. But it is easy to create a workflow that, for instance, consists of "Ask for Confirmation" action only and is set to receive no input or input from Finder or input from other application and test to see if it gets keyboard focus. As far as I can tell, this action obtains keyboard focus automatically.
Here's another workaround you may try. Replace the "Ask for Confirmation" action with a "Run AppleScript" action with the following contents. This will show similar dialogue to let you choose two options.
    on run {input, parameters}
        tell application "Finder"
            activate
display dialog "Are you sure?" with title "Permanently delete"
        end tell
        return input
    end run
The workflow will look like this.

  • Safari will no longer open.  I was using firefox until I could find a fix for safari.  I made the mistake of changing my default search to firebox later for convenience and now I can't open my system preference or many safari or apple linked files.

Safari will no longer open. It just goes back to my desktop.  When I right click on the safari icon in my dashboard it says it is open.  I was using firefox until I could find a fix for safari.  I made the mistake of changing my default search to firebox later for convenience and now I can't open my system preference or many safari or apple linked files. Some of my emails from trusted sites won't open and does the same thing.
I upgraded my original system from 10.4.11 to I believe 10.6. something about a year or so ago.  I thought about re installing my safari app but when I go to open anything connected to safari my screen goes back to the desktop.  I cant open any files that I have on my desktop that I set up through safari, like my banking program. Prior to changing system preference to safari default I was able to open those files and now I can't get into change it back.  Can you guide me through this?
    Thanks,
    Betty

Try running the 10.6.8 combo update.
    10.6.8 Combo Updater
    System Preferences or Safari Preferences?
    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Can you select all Links in the Links Panel
Use the Flyout Menu on the top right of panel.

Unless you believe middle-click is yours and don't like it being usurped, mine is set globally to "Enter".

  • ...link files no longer point to an original file and therefore cannot be

repaired. This is, what DiskWarrior says about one HD of mine. How it happened, no clue, didn't do anything unusual. Now after reinstalling the system on this HD (somebody in a different discussion helped me to localize that BaseSystem.pkg in the Receipts Folder was empty) DiskWarrior still says the same. Have problems to connect to the internet from this disc and get the updates from 10.3 to 10.3.9. Safari doesn't work right.
    Any ideas ?

A link file is a file that points to another file, kind of like an alias, except the link file points to a certain location whereas an alias will follow a file around. Although some links are important it is also possible it isn't and since the files have been moved around the links are broken. Somebody else may correct me but I'm guessing you can't repair those unless you know the files to which they were pointing. This would probably be something the OS or an applications set up rather than you so you can't really do it yourself (easily). The actually link files themselves are not critical but maybe what they do is.

  • How to manage linked files with multiple designers?

    Hi,
I work at a small company with multiple designers (5 of us) where 3 of us work remotely. We use dropbox to manage our files so that everyone has access--we keep client files in specific folders and stock media in a shared folder.
Currently whenever we open a file that's been edited by someone else, we have to go in and individually relink the files. Some would prefer to embed the files, however this can increase filesize by 60-400mb. Our current files total in at around 500gb, so I don't think that's a viable option.
4 of us are on Macs, 1 on Windows. 1 has CS5, 3 have CS6 and one has CC.
    My question is this:
If we all have the same path to dropbox (or the same path to the file, either way) will Illustrator be able to automatically find the files?
    Eg. X:/Dropbox/...
If so, will it work cross platform?
I know InDesign has a better link management system, is there a good plugin that would help with this?
I'm going to continue to do my own research and testing, but I thought I'd consult those more knowledgeable than me.
    Thank you!

Thanks for your response. Currently, dropbox works so that it syncs online but also is stored locally on your hard drive (not like a network drive). So one person could have a different path to the dropbox folder than the other. As for the second part, that would be about the same as embedding it in the file as far as general disk space usage. We use many of the same stock photos in multiple files, so keeping them in the same location reduces the amount of space used. It wouldn't be a huge problem if illustrator used relative paths instead of absolute paths, but alas.
I was forgetting that Mac OS doesn't use drive letters, so there probably won't be a way for illustrator to read things as the same path cross-platform...
I'm still wondering if there are any good plug-ins which help find broken links.
I found this: http://techblog.willshouse.com/2011/01/16/adobe-illustrator-linked-files-fix/ which might be helpful, but I'm wondering if there's a better solution.

  • "Download Linked File As" Does Not Work

As others have noted, although Safari is an excellent and fast browser, there is one feature that is quite annoying, namely that all filed download by default to a single folder selected in preferences. Internet Explorer (and Firefox, I believe) by default allows the user to save to any folder selected at the time. In each thread I've read noting this problem, someone answers that the solution in Safari is to right click on the link and select "Download Linked File As" then direct the browser to the folder. The problem is that this does not work as Safari downloads only the link (or something else) but not the linked file. For example, if the linked file is a PDF, under "file type" PDF does not appear, only "All Files" and once the download is complete you have an entry in the desired folder but not the file itself. (This is true even if you append the proper suffix to the file name; no actual file.) Is there a solution here or does it really take several steps to get a downloaded file into the folder of choice?

I just checked a pdf and "Download linked file as" does give me option to save where I want for pdf, jpg files and others.

  • Content of linked files in a inDesign-document refuses to update when edited.

    The problem:
I have a question about linked files in an inDesign-document.
We have a indesign-file (indd) wich contains text, linked map-illustrations and ads.
One of the linked maps gets changed by an external map-producer via an VPN-tunnel. He works directly on one of the existing linked files (a map), and does not change the name or location of it after editing.
After the change, we open the indd-file again, but no dialog-window appears telling us that a link needs to be updated. So we do it manually, but the changed content doesn't get updated in inDesign.
If we target the linked file and choose to open it in illustrator for editing, all of the changes that was ment to be there, still is. It just doesn't show up in indesign. This also shows that the linking isn't the problem.
The file is only placed at one spot in the document.
    Workaround:
    1. If WE (not the external map-producer) open the linked file and save it again (same name, same location), inDesign instantly promts us to update the link and the graphics updates without problem.
    2. If we place the file in a another location of the same inDesign-file, the correct content shows. (But still, the existing one does not update.)
    Question:
Is there any way you can think of that could make this happen?
If so, How can we solve it without having to use the workarounds?

This will work if you all use the file syncing of the Creative Cloud desktop application and then you use the Collaborate option for the folder containing all the files. Then it will work on each of your desktops.
Links to files will not work in the browser when viewing the InDesign document from https://creative.adobe.com/files.
