Linking High Res files back to FCPX project

Without Cinema Tools, can I still do an offline/low res edit with FCP X, but then relink to the high res 2K or 4K files for a final output? This would then be printed back to 35mm film. Anyone with experience in this work flow?
thank you for your time.

Thanks for your reply. Would this type of thing be possible with Avid Media Composer or the older Final Cut Pro 7?

  • How did I export a High-Res image from my FCP Project?

I know how to export still images using Quicktime Conversion. But it is possible to export High Resolution images from my FCP Project. You help would be much appreciated

Wow man, that's not the most efficient way to get stills. You can do this in FCP, it's easy. Here is what you do....
Go to EXPORT and then USING QUICKTIME CONVERSION
You will see a dropdown box in the right corner that says FILE FORMAT. Change that to STILL IMAGE.
Underneath you can choose which type of still Image you would like to convert the frame to (JPEG, PIC, PSD, etc) You can also change the quality
    Hope this helps.

  • Anyone have experience using high-res files (eg line art) in Aperture?

As I found at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1741287&tstart=0 it seems that Aperture will choke on files over a certain size. I'll grant, I tried something that is outside the scope of Aperture---I tried using it to store a workflow starting with a scan rather than a photo. The scan is higher resolution than most digital photos (as line art must be).
Does anyone have any experience with high-resolution photos or scans? I'm talking over a hundred MB, possibly upwards of a gigabyte. These are precisely the sort of files that I want to create lower-res versions for specific applications and have them be linked to the master file.

I tried to use Aperture with my line art scans in the early versions of Aperture, but gave it up because Aperture did not seem to handle the file size.
Instead I use another workflow for my artwork, Bridge, Photoshop, Illustrator and Version Cue in combination with Extensis Portfolio. This is a very pleasing solution for me and I would recommend it to others to try out as well.
For me, Aperture is used for managing and adjusting my photographs.

  • How can I link 1 movie file with several logic projects?

    Hi all,
I've been  working on the music for a film with a colleague of mine and are sharing logic files via dropbox. 72 cues had to be altered for logisitical reason to work in someone else's studio for the final mix. Since I had a copy of the movie on my machine and my colleague had a copy on his we thought that if we put our movie into the root directory of our logic project's folder then the movie would automatically load up with the projects after we shared them via dropbox. We checked to make sure that both movies had the same filename. Unfortunately this did not work and we had to then reassociate 72 cues individually with each logic project. With such limited time to prepare the cues for the final mix this really took too much time.
Is there any way in logic (9.1.8) to associate 1 movie file with a number of logic projects quickly, without having to open up the project and select open movie?
    kind regards
    /mischa

Seems to me that if you both had the movie file in the same location on both of your drives (eg on Macintosh HD at root level, in no other folder) then all the project files would search for this common path and find the file.
The problem arises when there is even a small difference between path names.
Unfortunately, this won't help you at this point as all the project files already are associated with unique file paths for the movie. By now, you've probably already done it one by one - but maybe for next time....?
There's no bulk or quick way to do this.

  • Low resolution image comes in larger when imported into high res file?

In CS5, I have a postcard I'm designing at 355 PPI with a width of 2174 px and a height of 1553 px.
I dragged an image on top of the file straight from the desktop that is 72PPI with a width of 300 px and a height of 214 px, and it seems to display a lot larger than I anticipated, and it does not seem very soft or pixelated after import.
    1. Why does it come in at a larger size?
    2. If I use a Transform Tool to shrink it down, will it print nicely at a smaller size even though it was only 72 PPI?
    Thanks.

In the Preferences under General, there is a check box that says...
Resize Image During Paste/Place.  What is it set to?

  • Importing fcpx project back into fcpx and having trouble

    Please Help Me.
So I shared a project from Final Cut Pro X to my desktop so that it was the "Title" - Mac and PC.mp4 file. Then I put the project and all the event files onto an external hard drive and deleted the project and the event files from my computer. Since I did that, the mp4 files disappeared, and now I'm trying to retrieve it, so I plugged in my external hard drive to my computer, and tried to get the project back into Final Cut so I could export it properly this time. But although the project imports back into FCPX, it says all the files are missing. I'm trying to put the event files back into FCPX as well, but it doesn't seem to be synching with the project and now I'm scared that I'll either never be able to have this video again or I'll have to do a serious amount of manual re-editing to retrieve it. It seems that if I have the project file and all the original video files from each event, why would it not be able to be retrieved? Is there something I'm doing wrong or some other way I can retrieve this project and/or get my mp4 file back? Should I be putting the event files in a specific place? Please someone, anyone, help me and let me know if you have any useful advice asap.
    Thank you.

  • Edit Low-Res, Export High-Res

Is there a way to edit with low-resolution video files (for quicker rendering times) and when the project is finished, final cut can access the corresponding high-res files for output?
Gopro automatically creates .mp4 files and .lrv files after a shoot.  The .mp4 files are 1080p and my computer has trouble even wathcing them.  The .lrv files (stands for low-resolution video) are like 480p and would be awesome to edit with, as long as final cut could keep track of all the snips and affects and apply them to the corresponding high-resolution .mp4 files.
anyone ever heard of or done anything like this? seems like it would help a lot.

interesting.. multipe drives, i didnt even know FCP kept such good track of all your drives!
I'm no good in 'details', but like to explain 'concepts':
when you cut a video, you don't literally splice a 100MB file into two 50MBs ones
think of FCPX basicly as a data-base: there's a pool of data (Events); there are lists of instructions (Projects) - the lists don't touch the content. Same concept with Proxies: the Preview window is so tiny - why shoveling the GBs back'n forth, if a 'reduced' version is on display anyhow? No need to edit 'natively': the 'edit list' = Project has to use the originals only on export.-
so, FCPX handles here <counting> six drives. And I'm just a soccer-dad, doin' weekend reports (ok, using 5 cams, all diff. standards - shoestring budget) - no problem. It's me who needs EventManagerX not to get lost with all this games and players and seasons and stuff
vice versa: one of the biggest mistakes is to confuse this data-base by moving files 'behind its back' - soooo many reports 'Events lost!', just because some smart moved data OUTside FCPX via Finder - no wonder, the data-base loses track!
last word about the concept of data base: that's why 'file names' and manual folders are completely waste of time - tags are much better, add as many key-words and meta-data you like - and let the data base find the clips for you (a computer is much faster in search'n find).-
    LeRoyDankins wrote:
… i'll have to try that out for myself...
It works surprisingly well! I was a huge fan of iMovie for years, and when switching to the Big Toy, my first concern was 'will it blend compute?' No budget here for a new Mac - and it does perform well. Very well. For a slow guy like me ..........

  • Replace low res footage with high res?

Can anyone tell me or is there a tutorial that shows how to take low res preview footage and replace it with the high res files for final output? In my case the high res file names have slightly different numbers. Is there a way to just change them to match the preview footage and be done? Doesn't seem to work for me. Tried relinking with no luck. I get: "Incompatible file. The original file and new file have no shared media range.Relinked files must have the same media type, same frame rate, and similar audio channels as the original files, and must be long enough to cover all the clips that reference the files." Seems like this shoould be a slam dunk!

I was using archival footage and only had low res previews to work with. Now that the project is approved I can buy the  actual footage and complete for output. Is this different from replacing watermaked low stock footage with unmarked high res? Should I have set up the time stamped low res as proxie? Please don't tell me I'm back to square one.....

  • File links go missing files in bins

Premiere Pro CS6. I'm working on a fairly complex project with lots and lots of still images and dynamic links to AE CS6. Never had this happen before, but while I'm working on a project with lots of bins and sub-bins, I'll go looking for a file and while the bins are all still there, there are no files in them.
My workaround has been to close PPro and reopen the file and voila! they're there. Nothing changes on the timeline, but I can't access the links to move a file to the timeline.
Bug or feature??? I'd say bug, because it certainly doesn't act as a feature to me!
I'd send a bug report, but they don't really seem to help. I've still got the problem of having to render AE CS6 dynamic links inside PPro, which didn't exist in CS5.5 and have turned in several bug reports, with no response from Adobe. sigh Takes up valuable render time.
The work around is not acceptable as it takes up even more time!

I'll go looking for a file and while the bins are all still there, there are no files in them.
"My guess is you have something typed into the search field.  Clear that out."
Nope. Nothing in the search box. It's like the database for the bins just disappears randomly. Then when i close the program and reopen it, the file links are back. It's almost like the bins directory(?) loses communications with Premiere (it hasn't happened in AE...yet) so I'm wondering if there's a .dll or some sort of subroutine that directs the bin database.
"Can you be more specific?  Every version of PP that has had Dynamic Link has often required the "link" to be rendered in PP for real time playback.  This will depend on your hardware and the complexity of the comp."
Yes. When I dynamically linked an AE file to a PPro project in versions CS5 and CS5.5 (and further back as well, when it worked at all!), the render line above the linked project was yellow, showing as not needing a render. In CS6, the behavior is completely different. It shows as needing to render (red). My graphics card is an approved nVidia Quadro, so that's not an issue. In CS6, it's broken. Period. It has disrupted my workflow as I use many compositions from AE in PPro and now have to render a project.
Thanks for the help...or at least looking at the issues. But no resolution here yet.

  • How do I get high res aperture images on new iPad?

I want high quality images synced from aperture. I bought the new ipad specificaly to do artwork and image maniuplations. I was loving the ipad 2 but working with such low res images won't work for reporduction. I thought with the new ipad when I synced to aperture that I would get higher res files. They look like the same small images to me.

    Art,
I'm still working out the details myself, but I may have some helpful information.
If you are syncing through iTunes, then I believe the resolution is dictated by the preview preferences in Aperture. I can't remember what the default setting was, but I changed it to the maximum allowable for the iPad1 some time ago. The new iPad can handle more resolution, so you can change the setting in preferences to a higher level. Here is where it gets tricky, I don't think Aperture automatically updates the preview to the new settings. In fact, I it tells you it is up to date. I got past this by forcing the generate new preview feature (select the photo, hold down the option key, right click, and select generate preview). I suggest doing this with one photo to see how it works for you. Ff you do 1600 like I did, it takes some time. Although, I'm still hoping for better, I can see the difference immediately over my iPad1 settings. I am able to zoom in on the ipad, which much less obvious degradation of the image.
I did get some variation in the preview size, even though the full image sizes are close. My file size ranged from 800K to 2.8M for some sample images transferred to the ipad. This happened at the "no limit"setting in preferences.
As I said, I'm still playing with it. I bought the 64GB model so I could store and present very high resolution photos on the iPad.

  • Repeated problem of broken link and unused files

    Hi ,
    I am using RH8.0.2
I have updated my RH8 to RH8.0.2 and then fix all broken link and did what was advised.i got result, everything was fine, I was a happy man. Today when i open the same project for updation, i found again plenty of broken links and unused file in the same project.
Is there any permanent solution of the problem of broken links and unused file or i have to fix it every time when i open my project?
    Plz help!!!
    Br,
    Rahul

    Hi Rahul.
Two things. Firstly some of the paths you have in your project are very long. In the example you have given we are seeing less than half the path. This may not be the problem but it maybe in the future. Secondly, as Peter has suggested, the problem maybe related to source control. Do you use it? I have heard of instances where (e.g. .FPJ) files cause issues.

  • Why does Illustrator CS 4 high res pdf ask for linked images?

I have saved high res pdfs (press quality) from Illustrator CS4 directly, and when I sent these pdfs to the printers, they ask me to supply them the linked images, otherwise they could not view the entire file completely. I thought the high res pdf setting would automatically embed images, could anyone please help me?? Our printers are waiting for explaination urgently and the images are very very large to be transferred overseas online. Thank you!!

If you made a PDF which is "print ready" there should be no issue, this is given that the printer informed you as to what "Print Ready" was by their workflow standards. The only time I would need to go back to a client for source files which were embedded into a PDF is if there were color mode issues (RGB image needed to convert to CMYK with certain profile) or if client PDF produced without required bleed. If you have exercised due diligence and the PDF is in fact "Print Ready" the printer may not be used to working with PDF files that are truly print ready. I have sent PDF files to printers who absolutely wanted to open the PDF in Illustrator and have all source/linked files because they were used to getting all end user files, not press ready PDF files. Once I spoke with the Prepress operator and let him know that I went through the PDF and made sure the file was exactly separated as it should print, and he should be able to send it straight to his RIP, then everything was fine.
Prepress people get used to dealing with designers who don't know how to do anything execpt make a moch up of what they want and print it out on their own ink jet printer. The actual file they send to the printer may need to be completely retooled in order to separate correctly for the printing process.

  • While working on FCPX project, power failed. Power on, restarted, opened FC, Project Library shows blank icon, no clips. Click on icon, nothing happens. Haven't done back-up. Can project be recovered?

While working on a FXPX project, there was a power failure. Power back on, restarted FCPX, project name in Project Library is a blank icon, nothing happens when I click on it. Believing back ups were automatic and continuous, I made no back up. Can the project be recovered?

Years of fine internet use via WIFI then randomly it starts dropping then one day (weeks later) it is no longer accessible at all and even saying "No hardware installed" when I click on WIFI icon at the top right on screen. Here is how I finally fixed it!:
For six months I wallowed in this problem and had to connect my macbook pro to the internet via ethernet cable which as you can image was very restrictive :/
I have had numerous laptop technicans befuddled by this WIFI problem and most concluding with how my WIFI card must be broken and that I will need to buy a new one. The last suggestion I had on the matter was to buy a USB wifi dongle.
So I ended up buying this one, http://www.asus.com/nz/Networking/USBN10_NANO/Unfortunately my macbook pro didn't want to read the install disc and it didn't autorun so it didn't work. After reading more forums I saw that you could download the program from the net and sure enough it worked.. BUT STRANGER when I took the USB dongle out the WIFI was still working!! The program appears to have reminded my four year old macbook pro that it is indeed WIFI capable.
So to find this miraculous program its located herehttp://www.asus.com/nz/Networking/USBN10_NANO/HelpDesk_Download/
Same link as above just under SUPPORT>Driver&Tools
You then click on a file when its downloaded and a file called MAC will appear, then click on install. Within 5 minutes you should have your WIFI back. My macbook pro crashed again today but without having to get the shortest ethernet cable you've ever seen out again - I was able to install the program again and WIFI was up and running once more. Moral of the story - didn't need to spend any money to fix this and not even using the USB dongle.
So happy!! Hope it works for you too!
This also worked on a MacBook that lost its WIFI when a user accounts password was changed and the keychain password wasn't known to them - another random way to lose WIFI apparently

  • How can you tell FCPX project files in a deleted trash recovery program

    Hello All
Did the unthinkable and trashed a FCPX project folder I need.....and emptied the trash.
I immediatly went into recovery with program ''Stellar Phoenix...'' and was able to recover loads of files.
Since they are now ''generic'' labeled, I can't decifer which one is the FCPX project file.
Does anyone have a method to determine which is which in a recovery situation.
    Some further info....
recovered files are organized in folders by types:
                   OSX 10.6
                   graphics
                   documents
                   apps......sub folders to include: ''c source...plist....apple scripts....etc
                   video
                   audio
                   archive
                   and a few more..
It seems apparent that it's not going to be video, audio. graphics...etc
but I was thinking ''apple scripts'' as a project is just instructions for the timeline movie, right?
anyway, have a lot of searching to do and no real map on what I'm looking at here.
Anyone had an experience like this and can shed some light?
    ...greatly appreciate it
    Thanks!

    Monty,
Within FCP, there is a menu item called "Media Manager" (depending on what version you are in). This would be worth your while to look into. It basically organizes your project by moving/archiving any used assets of a project and leaving out un-used assets. It saves a ton of disk space.
For example, say you have a 5 minute clip with an in/out point that is just 30 seconds. Media Manager will "archive" just that 30 seconds, not the entire clip. There is even a setting that you can add additional "handles" time to the front andd back of the clip if you think you may need to add or change transition.
Do a google search. I was just watching a few Youtube videos on this myself.

After burning a successful DVD in iDVD out of FCPX, how can I see the settings it used?
So I finally burned a DVD out of a Apple Pro Res file into iDVD in PAL format. My question now is how can I find out what the exact burn properties were so that I can apply the same burn properties to a project in Compressor 4?
Is it possible to see what iDVD did?

I don't know any way you can interrogate iDVD to reveal settings to the extent that you can in a Compressor project. What you could do is open up the show's VOB in MPEG STreamclip, go to File and Reveal Stream Information; that will at least give you some rudimentary info like average bit rate. Perhaps someone, with more iDVD experience, can chime in here.
The broader question is why use Compressor at all if your current workflow is doing the job to your satisfaction?
The value of Compressor is that it gives you control over the many parameters that affect size quality.  and playability. The Compressor presets can give you a starting point for DVD delivery, Web, etc. From those presets, people typically experiment by adjusting the parameters until they get the desired results for their specific show. It's a little bit science and a little bit art. After experimenting, you may be able to get slightly better quality for the project you've successfully burned in iDVD by using Compressor and something likeToast…or maybe not.
    Good luck.
