Linking layers in Photoshop CS2

I have just upgraded to CS2 from v.7 and I cannot believe that I now have to have each layer I want to link right next to one another in the layers palette! In v. 7 you could just click on a layer and then choose any other layer in the palette, regardless of its position, to link with by using the link box. It appears in CS2 that you must use the shift key and stack each layer together that you want to link. This is hugely laborious and really counter-productive! Some layers must retain their position in the palette (under/over a shadow for example) and yet I may want to move them in conjunction with a layer elsewhere in the heirarchy. Please tell me there's another way to link!

just select all layers you want to link using the command key and click the link button.
Also because of the better way you can select as many layers at a time as needed, actually linking isn't all that necessary anymore. Also the use of folders/sets in the layers pallet if you want to keep things together.

I have Photoshop CS. In the box showing the layers I've made, there is no longer a small checking box to the left of each enabling me to link a layer with others. If I hold the cursor over the looped "link" symbol at the bottom, an "unavailable" symbol appears. Does anyone know how I get the link boxes back please? Thanks David5119

Thank you. I didn't know I could select more than one layer by holding down the Ctrl key and that, when I do that, the link symbol appears. Don't know at what point the link check boxes disappeared as they were certainly there originally; maybe when I reinstalled Photoshop for some reason. But a big thank you - your advice worked. It sounds like you have an photoshop version cs2 or newer.
To link layers in photoshop cs2 and newer versions, the layers you want to link need to be selected first in the layers panel and then press the link icon at the bottom of the layers panel.

Enum selected layers in Photoshop CS2

One of new features in Photoshop CS2 is select more than one layer at time. I'm developing a Automation plugin that need to know target layers. Is possible to know the target layerID when only one layers is selected using SDK C++ function "PIUGetInfo(classLayer, keyLayerID, &layerTargetID, NULL);". There is any SDK C++ function or script to enum all selected layerID's when 2 o more layers are selected?.

Can I download Adobe Photoshop CS2 legally from Adobe's link?

The conditions from Adobe are that you must have either purchased the license perviously or have bought Reader 7 beforehand. I know certainly that I have not bought Photoshop CS2 before, so I don't know if I can still purchase it.
Ethically, it feels wrong to get the download however practically I need it for school and I don't have a lot of money. I'm trying to do the right thing here, can anybody suggest what to do?

Yeah, that's what I am worried about. I guess I will just pass. As for the prices, they are still too high. I just needed the software for school projects and charity work - yet price is still a roadblock.
I think they should legalize it for nonlicensed members. I could certainly benefit from this and thereby indirectly benefit others.

My version of Adobe Photoshop CS will not install as this copy is not supported by Adobe anymore and there is no phone or internet support available. Instead there is a free link for download of Adobe Photoshop CS2. I was given that link bu Adobe support however I had to do a full restore and lost this information. Does anyone have this link?

Importing Multi-Layered Photoshop CS2 files...

Hello again everyone. I trust you are all well.
I am currently constructing some tutorials for my Video Editing class and I am trying to demonstrate how to import and use Multi-layered Photoshop CS2 files inside Final Cut Express 2.0.3.
Here is the problem:
My iBook is running Final Cut Express 2.0.3 but does not have Adobe Photoshop CS2 on it. My DELL PC is running Adobe Photoshop CS2 and I am creating my PSD's on that and then transfering those PSD's across to the iBook with either my USB stick or my iPod.
Now according to the Final Cut Express 2.0.3 Help file, "When you import a layered Photoshop File into Final Cut Express, the file becomes a sequence in your project".
However, when I import my PSD, that was created on my DELL in Photoshop CS2, into Final Cut Express 2.0.3, it does not import it as a sequence, but as a flattened still image.
Is this because I need to have Photoshop CS2 installed on my iBook for the PSD to be imported correctly as a sequence, retaining the layers, or is there a compatability issue with creating PSD's on a PC and then trying to import them into Final Cut Express 2.0.3?

I had a feeling this might be the case after I did some more testing with Photoshop files created on a MAC. If I resave those PC Photoshop files on a Mac in Photoshop, they import correctly as a sequence into Final Cut Express.

URGENT NEED: Using Photoshop CC, is there a way to auto-center linked layers to a specific area on data merge?

I'm looking for a way to auto-center a group of linked layers to a specific area after being data-merged in Photoshop CC. The text needs to be all left-justified within the area in question, so I'm looking for a way that once the merged data comes in, the layers automatically center themselves within the area.

Yes. For example do a select all or make a selection of the area. Target the layer you want to align to that and use menu Layer>Align Layers to Selection>Location...
Use this menu twice to align the layer(s) to one of the nine positions og a tick tack toe board are of the selection.
Example center layer over center of the canvas
Select All
target top layer
Layer>Align Layers to Selection>Vertical center...
Layer>Align Layers to Selection>Horizontal center...
If you select a group of layers that are linked I would expect the group's layers center would be over the center of the canvas. However I have not mad that test it would be easy to test try it. You may even only need to select the layer you want over the center all the linked layers should move with the one being aligned.
But I do not know what you mean by a data merge. Do you mean merge down or merge layers.

Can you 'Link Layers' in Illustrator like in Photoshop, or only merge?

I have spent days searching for How to 'link layers' in Illustrator (similar to how you would in Photoshop).
Is this even possible,..? as it appears not.
I can merge layers.. But i only want to LINK to keep the elements separate.

Ok the default swatches should open with each new document, if that are not doing so then one of two things probably is occurring!
1 you have accidentally opened the default print document deleted the swatches because you probably did not need them for wha you were working on and then did a save and overwrote the default document and now the swatches are gone.
2 You selected a custom made document profile that had now swatches, except the ones you say are there, when creating a new document and that is being defaulted as the next new document,Illustrator remembers the last document setting.

Registered Photoshop CS2 but have not received complimentary benefit as mentioned

Recently I registered Photoshop CS2 product I bought in 2005, and as mentioned in the adobe leaflet documentation that came with the software there is a complimentary benefit after registration of either a free Garamond Premier Pro Font, 2 Free issues of Photoshop User, a Layers magazine, or 60 minutes of additional video training. While I assume I registered the software previously I registered again, but did not receive a link to the complimentary benefit via email. I save all my photoshop files, but as I do not have the compilmentary benefit as mentioned above on my PC, I would appreciate any info on receiving it.

My thinking is that it is too late for the benefit. All you can do is call cutomer support and see if they will honor it. But they would have to go back in their records four years just to find out. For all I know they could keep all their old records in a warehouse someplace. So they may just feel generous and give you the benefit or say your out of luck.

Just purchased new Nikon D200. RAW Images will not open in Photoshop CS2. Receive Adobe Photoshop CS2 error message "Could not complete your request because of a program error." Images taken with this camera will open in Nikon Capture 4.4 and then can be transferred to CS2 But attempting to open RAW images directly with CS2 is futile.
Images taken with Nikon D2h and Nikon D100 flow perfectly through CS2
Only images taken with Nikon D200 will not open in CS2.
Is this Nikon problem or an Adobe problem?

upon importing i had the option of selection importinf from a "PICT Resource..."
this was the only option that allowed me to select my JPG images (digital caerma images, btw)
when i select and clikc OK, a message that comes up that says "There are no PICT resources in this file"
moreover, when i convert the JPG images to PICT images (via preview) i get the same message
strange, since i've been able to copy and past my JPG files all along until now...

Adobe Photoshop CS2 Installing Error

When I tried to Install for tryout version, it sometimes has an error. It says me to put the serial number in. Though it succeed it, it says like this : "Error 1311. Source file not found: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\Photoshop_CS2_tryout\Photoshop CS2\Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) CS2\Data1.cab. Verify that the file exits and that you can access it.".
I verified that the file exits, and I could acces it. What is happening?!

Simply put it in another folder. The path is too long and unnecessarily convoluted - folders inside folders inside folders....

Can not open Adobe Bridge in Photoshop CS2

Adobe Bride is supposed to be included with Photoshop CS2, but there are no links to it when in Photoshop. File>Browse does not go to Bridge. I downloaded a new copy of Bridge from Adobe and installed it. There is still no link to Bridge in Photoshop, but there is a Bridge icon in the start menu. However, double clicking the icon gives the error "The program cannot start because the file libagluc28.dll is missing from your computer". However, a search for that file finds it in three locations: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Help Center, C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2, and C:Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat. Any ideas as to how to start AdBridge?

Adobe has disabled the activation server for CS2 products, including Acrobat 7, because of a technical issue. These products were released more than seven years ago, do not run on many modern operating systems, and are no longer supported.
Adobe strongly advises against running unsupported and outdated software. The serial numbers provided as a part of the download may only be used by customers who legitimately purchased CS2 or Acrobat 7 and need to maintain their current use of these products.

Adobe Photoshop CS2 in Macbook Pro

During installation of Adobe Photoshop CS2, the installer runs and freezes in the midst. There is no way of installing Adobe Photoshop CS2 with intel processor. Full reinstallation of Mac OSX doesn't help. Running disk utility doesn't help either. Problems occurred with or without installing of Apple Security Update 2006-003(intel). Any comments?

Edwin, thanks for the input, and I do apologize. You are right. I should be easier with which to live. There are two major problems out there right now. That is also part of the problem. We are not used to two problems in our domain.
I own 20 Mac's in my office, and I only did these updates on my MacBook Pro 17 inch and my G5 Dual 2.3 Ghz machine that has two 30-inch Cinema Displays. I had both problems on my MacBook Pro, and the G5 had the reboot glitch. I won't update the other machines untill these problems are resolved by the OEMs.
Of the two major hiccups out there, this link indicates Quicktime's update is the source of the inability to restart machines, fixed by deleting startup items, I believe. I had this reboot problem also.

Accrobat's freezing the system, the question at hand, is a result of the Security Update, fixed by rolling back to a pre-Security Update state using Archive & Install re-installation of the OS. Archive & Install does not erase your files or network settings.
Apple has released two products that fouled these systems. Bad Quality Assurance I think. I am not sure if the Security Update problem is an Apple or an Adobe software problem, i.e., Adobe may have not followed some software guidance. I am certain both companies are aware of the problem, but I am uncertain of the fix for Acrobat. We probably do need to update for security, but I can't live without Acrobat. So I will wait it out without the Security Update.

PhotoShop CS2 "Program Error" when printing

I am posting this to the Adobe Forums as well, but thought someone here might have some ideas. am having an intermittent problem printing from PhotoShop CS2 to an Epson 9800. When printing large files (200 MB average) to the Epson, PhotoShop will spool the job, taking about 50% longer than normal, and when complete, displays the following message..."The file XXXX.tif could not be printed because of a program error" No job ever gets to the print que. This happens about 80% of the time when printing. Quitting and restarting PhotoShop generally fixes the problem, and the file can be printed from another computer without issue, so this is not file specific. I have 8GB of RAM installed and PhotoShop running under 100% available memory, cache level at 8, with a dedicated 180GB scratch disk. Memory should NOT be the problem, though I do often have the full layered version of the file open in the background (I am printing from a flattened copy. I have observed that the problem is less likely to occur if no other files are open. I have a second G5 with the exact same software setup (OS, Print Driver and PhotoShop down to the decimal version #) that works perfectly every time. I have run all of the System utilities (Repair Permissions, FSCK, etc), reset the OSX printing system, reset PS preferences, trashed and re installed CS, as well as the Epson printer driver, all with no success. Any other trouble shooting ideas would be greatly appreciated. I would love to avoid a System reinstall.

I suggest whenever you have problems with third-party applications, the first place to start troubleshooting is with the application's documentation, then vendor's web site. Usually their sites have FAQs, lists of known bugs, or application-specific forums similar to these Discussions. Sometimes, unlike the Apple Discussions, the questions are even answered by employees of the vendor.

Installing photoshop cs2 onto macbook pro

I had the old version of photoshop cs2. I want to put it on my new macbook pro. I was given the link http://www.adobe.com/downloads/cs2_downloads/index.html". I have downloaded it but when I try to install the message says 'Installation failed. The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance'.

Looks like you're looking at buying a full version of CS6 or subscribing to the cloud. :-/
