Linking layers?

hi all. i am so new here it is silly, there is soooo much
info i started with some searches but cannot find anything here nor
on the many tutorials online to solve my issue so here goes.
worth mentioning is that i only dabble in flash so i am not
very good at it.
you can see the flash animation i created at
http://www.aparcamac.com/index.php/1.htm
(in the main content section when the page loads).
i made the background red so you can see the problem.
you will notice the huge red space underneath the animation
where the hands pull back to when they take the laptop off the
dock.
i created the document 530x530 pix but when i give it that
size in the embed, it cuts the external monitor off at the top, no
matter what i do, it leaves a ton of space at the bottom. those
hands that take the macbook pro away should leave the movie scene
well before they actually do now, in other words, the movie seems
to be way too high on the canvas (so to speak). in order to make
the entire external monitor there viewable, i need to make the
embed size 720 high by 530 wide. that allows for more space at the
top but still leaves the space i do not want at the bottom.
my question is can i link the layers in flash so that i can
slide them all down to the bottom and fix this? i cannot find a
link layers tool or option like in photoshop to be able to move the
layers all at once. i need to move them all down 116 pixels in
order to have the movie where it belongs, at the bottom of the
document and hence get rid of that bottom space and be able to
embed at 530x530 pix as it was meant to.
i am sure this is easy for most of you but it is killing me.
short of moving every layer down manually 116 pix. (there are
9 layers and i do not want to mess any of them up by moving them
the wrong amt. of pixels), i do not know what to do.
the document should end where the red background begins.
thanks in advance.
saludos,
jer...

This is something that is a pain in the rear, and I wish
Macromedia/Adobe would have fixed a long time ago. Layer linking so
you can affect all keyframes at once.....
To do this, you need to use Onion Skinning.....
If you don't know onion skinning, it is a method that allows
you to see the previous/next frames content, so you can more
readily change the frame you are on, when animating by hand.
Just a word of warning before you start. This is an extremely
processor intensive process. The more frames you have the slower
your computer will go, and the easier it will be to get the
computer to crash.
At the bottom of the timeline, you have a small row of
buttons. In Flash CS3 the buttons go in the following order:
- Scroll to Playhead
- Onion Skin
- Onion Skin Outlines
- Edit Multiple Frames
- Modify Onion Markers
- Current Frame
- Framerate
- Elapsed Time
I think the layout is a bit different in Flash 8, so hover
over the buttons to get the tooltip that tells you which button it
is.
You need to turn on the second and fourth in that list (Onion
Skin & Edit Multiple Frames) You will notice that handles have
appeared on either side of your playhead.
- Put your playhead on the first frame of your animation.
- Drag the handle on the right side of your playhead the
whole way to the last frame of your animation.
- Put your playhead on the last frame of your animation.
- Drag the handle on the left side of your playhead the whole
way to the first frame of the animation.
This causes Flash to display the content of your entire
animation at once. (This is why it is processor intensive)
Now, select every frame (all layers) on the timeline, which
selects all of the content in the entire project. From there you
can nudge it all down appropriately, and everything will come with
you.
Hope this helps...

  • Show/hide linked layers

    In webdev it is not unsual that design involves multiple variations like "pages" where mostly header and footer stays the same while its "content" (the page itself) changes. And then simulate a navigation by means of hiding and unhiding each respective "page" folder. Where also the site's menu tranforms as "navigation" evolves.
    It is a bit frustrating in order to achieve this to have to create a lot of duplicated menu folders and place'em under every "page" just to represent this selected links. And then if you have to redesign that menu, you have it spreaded throught several folder locations.
    I think being able to hide/unhide linked layers at a glance of a click would be nice to have and would allow you a more strealined work while redesigning linked portions.
    Any toughts on this or workarounds? Glad to hear.

    Are you familiar with Layer Comps?
    And then if you have to redesign that menu, you have it spreaded throught several folder locations.
    Please try using Smart Objects.

  • Update Modified Content (Linked layers / Smart objects)

    Hey guys,
    Is there anything in the API for handling the new Linked layers? (CC 14.2)
    Specifically, I want to be able to Update Modified Content iteratively to handle lots of nested links.
    It doesn't have to be pretty, just functional, as this is a very complicated task to do manually.
    Cheers

    Crude, but maybe this helps:
    // 2014, use it at your own risk;
    #target photoshop
    if (app.documents.length > 0) {
    var ref = new ActionReference();
    ref.putEnumerated( charIDToTypeID("Dcmn"), charIDToTypeID("Ordn"), charIDToTypeID("Trgt") );
    var applicationDesc = executeActionGet(ref);
    var theXMP = applicationDesc.getString(stringIDToTypeID('XMPMetadataAsUTF8'));
    var theFiles = new Array;
    var theArray = theXMP.split("<stRef:filePath>");
    for (var m = 1; m < theArray.length; m++) {
    theFiles.push (theArray[m].slice(6,theArray[m].indexOf("</stRef:filePath>")));
    if (theFiles.length > 0) {alert(theFiles.join("\n"))};
    Edit: One problem, though: the list in the XMP metadata may not be up to date if the file has not been saved since the last linked SO has been placed or embedded.

  • Link Layers with One Hand?

    Something that's been bugging me about the way Photoshop links layers now is that I have to use two hands. I'm a WAHM, and I often am working with a baby in my lap and only one hand to work both my mouse and keyboard. It used to be that we could simply click on the link icon to link layers to the active layer, but nowadays it's a shift or ctrl+click to do it. Is there a one-handed method to link layers anymore, or am I out of luck until this kid gets older?

    Instead of linking, place layers into a group folder. Layers in a group folder will be just as if linked.
    Anytime you need to manipulate the layers in a group folder, either select the folder group in the layers palette or grab the move tool. If you use the move tool, check the box beside "Auto-select" and select "Group" in the pull down menu located to the right of the auto-select box.

  • As a user of Extract, I would like to have the ability to open/access assets and information contained within smart objects or linked layers. Is this possible?

    Problem:
    In Extract ( Extract for PSD ) a user is unable to access assets or information from smart objects or linked layers.
    Usage:
    Smart Objects/Linked Layers are useful for templated web workflows
    @Sectioning content allows for a holistic view with access to granular information
    Possible Solution(s):
    Could we create a link between to cloud files.
    Could a smart object or linked layer be expanded on upload
    Could we create a drop menu like the layer comps that includes related files

    Hello Martin,
    Our current support in Extract for Smart Objects includes showing them in the file, and using them on the backend when you request your layer(s) to be scaled while exporting (i.e., when scaling up, the highest quality image is used).  We also display the colors, fonts and gradients from the included Smart Objects in the Extract Styles panel.
    We have considered providing a way to open Smart Objects from within Extract, and could use some feedback from you on how this user experience would work best for you. Would you prefer option a) or b) below, and why?
    a) When opening a Smart Object, it opens in the current browser window, replacing your current view of the PSD.
    b) When opening a Smart Object, it opens in a new browser window, which receives focus (is the frontmost browser tab/window).
    Also, if you tried to open a Linked Smart Object when the linked file is not available, what would you expect to happen?
    Would you describe in more detail what you mean by: "Could a smart object or linked layer be expanded on upload?" and how you'd use this feature?

  • Bug: Link Layers via rightclick does not work

    Found an issue in Photoshop Version 13.0.1.
    This is not a great issue but i think this could be easily fixed by Adobe.
    If you want to link multiple layers in an image via rightclick and choose "Link layers..." it doesn't work as expected. But if you issue the link layers command in the layers palette it works. Same problem in 32bit and 64bit Version.
    System: Windows 7 x64 SP1
    Photoshop-Version: 13.0.1 (x32 and x64)
    can anyone also confirm this issue ?

    It seems to work here on windows 8 and cs6 13.01 in both the 32 and 64 bit versions of cs6.
    That is you select multiple layers and then right click on one of the layer thumbnails to the right of the layer name and choose link layers.
    I usually just use the link icon on the bottom of the layers panel for linking/unlinking layers.

  • URGENT NEED: Using Photoshop CC, is there a way to auto-center linked layers to a specific area on data merge?

    I'm looking for a way to auto-center a group of linked layers to a specific area after being data-merged in Photoshop CC. The text needs to be all left-justified within the area in question, so I'm looking for a way that once the merged data comes in, the layers automatically center themselves within the area.

    Yes.  For example do a select all or make a selection of the area.  Target the layer you want to align to that and use menu Layer>Align Layers to Selection>Location...
    Use this menu twice to align the layer(s) to one of the nine positions og a tick tack toe board are of the selection.
    Example center layer over center of the canvas
    Select All
    target top layer
    Layer>Align Layers to Selection>Vertical center...
    Layer>Align Layers to Selection>Horizontal center...
    If you select a group of layers that are linked I would expect the group's  layers center would be over the center of the canvas.  However I have not mad that test it would be easy to test try it. You may even only need to select the layer you want over the center all the linked layers should move with the one being aligned.
    But I do not know what you mean by a data merge. Do you mean merge down or merge layers.

  • Can you 'Link Layers' in Illustrator like in Photoshop, or only merge?

    I have spent days searching for How to 'link layers' in Illustrator (similar to how you would in Photoshop).
    Is this even possible,..? as it appears not.
    I can merge layers.. But i only want to LINK to keep the elements separate.
    Thanks for any advice,
    regards, a newbie.

    Ok the default swatches should open with each new document, if that are not doing so then one of two things probably is occurring!
    1 you have accidentally opened the default print document deleted the swatches because you probably did not need them for wha you were working on and then did a save and overwrote the default document and now the swatches are gone.
    2  You selected a custom made document profile that had now swatches, except the ones you say are there, when creating a new document and that is being defaulted as the next new document,Illustrator remembers the last document setting.

  • Unable to link layers in Photoshop CS

    I have Photoshop CS. In the box showing the layers I've made, there is no longer a small checking box to the left of each enabling me to link a layer with others. If I hold the cursor over the looped "link" symbol at the bottom, an "unavailable" symbol appears. Does anyone know how I get the link boxes back please? Thanks  David5119

    Thank you. I didn't know I could select more than one layer by holding down the Ctrl key and that, when I do that, the link symbol appears. Don't know at what point the link check boxes disappeared as they were certainly there originally; maybe when I reinstalled Photoshop for some reason. But a big thank you - your advice worked. Hi,
    It sounds like you have an photoshop version cs2 or newer.
    To link layers in photoshop cs2 and newer versions, the layers you want to link need to be selected first in the layers panel and then press the link icon at the bottom of the layers panel.

  • Duplicating multiple sets of seperately linked layers results in all layers being linked together

    This has been an issue for a while now, I found an old thread from 2011 about the same problem and the mod reported it to the devs, but as far as I know no solution has ever been offered. (maybe in cs6? we are still using cs5)
    For one or two layers it's no problem to do it manually, but with say 40 layers with corresponding linked layers we need a better solution.
    Does anybody know of a solution? Maybe a script of some kind?

  • Help!  How to Merge Linked Layers?

    in CS3.
    Thanks!

    From Help:
    Merge and stamp layers
    When you have finalized the content of layers, you can merge them to reduce the size of your image files. When you merge layers, the data on the top layers replaces any data it overlaps on the lower layers. The intersection of all transparent areas in the merged layers remains transparent.
    Note: You cannot use an adjustment layer or fill layer as the target layer for a merge.
    In addition to merging layers, you can stamp them. Stamping allows you to merge the contents of more than one layer into a target layer while leaving the other layers intact.
    Note: When you save a merged document, you cannot revert back to the unmerged state; the layers are permanently merged.
    Merge two layers or groups
    1. Make sure that the layers and groups you want to merge are visible.
    2. Select the layers and groups you want to merge.
    b 3. Choose Layer > Merge Layers.
    Note: You can merge two adjacent layers or groups by selecting the top item and then choosing Layer > Merge Down or Merge Group. You can merge linked layers by choosing Layer > Select Linked Layers, and then merging the selected layers.

  • Is there anyway to "Link Layers" - Attach formatted Layers so you can move

    Photoshop has a feature where you can "link layers" - if you have several things formatted that work together you link them, or combine them, so that when you move one, they all move together. It's an invaluable feature.
    Does iWeb have anything similar? It's so frustrating to take all this time to format something and then to have to move something and and you have to move each layer individually and then recreate the careful formatting you worked so hard on.
    Thanks!

    iWeb is an application to create & manage webpages.
    Photoshop is an application to create & edit pictures.
    Shift-click to select multiple objects is not iWeb specific. It's been around for the past 25 years. It works on the desktop too.
    BTW, here's a movie that shows how to merge objects : [merging objects in iWeb|http://www.wyodor.net/blog/archives/2009/03/entry_122.html]

  • Selecting, grouping, and linking layers

    This question was posted in response to the following article: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/photoshop/cs/using/WSfd1234e1c4b69f30ea53e41001031ab64-78d2a

    That link doesn't work for me.
    I think it's missing .html -- http://help.adobe.com/en_US/photoshop/cs/using/WSfd1234e1c4b69f30ea53e41001031ab64-78d2a.h tml
    Hey Mike,
    Linking layers is similar grouping layers in a sense, but a bit different as well.
    So you can have multiple layers retain their relationship to each other as you move them around, or transform them and they will transform together.
    Unlink them and they will act separately
    One difference of linked layers vs grouped layers is that you can move a linked layer up and down your layers panel, in and out of groups, and still maintain it's link to the other layers which may reside in a group. So that if you select that layer and move it on the canvas, it will still move with the layer it's linked to even though it's outside the group.
    You can link multiple groups together as well.

  • How to temporally link layers in prem cs5?

    Hi
    I have a complicated project and for various reasons the producer has asked me to drop in a extra gfx making my framing all off.. so I need to simple move a section of the project to the left, but I need to move near 20 layers and have them all move in relation to each other.
    Is there someway I can simple select all the levels and move the objects on the screen together with out linking all the move tracks and wiping the animation that is already there?
    An example would be in photoshop you can shift select layers to multi select then the move tool will move all of them at once... but even with the layers selected in the timeline the move tool dose not seam to move all at once
    Thanks in Advance
    -Me

    1. In the timeline select all the clips you wish to move together;
    2. Right click and click on "Group".
    3. The selected clips become a group and you can move them together.
    You can then "ungroup" them is you wish.

  • LINK LAYERS WITH SAME STYLE

    Hello I am running cs6 PS
    And I have 4 layers in my palette that are all linked ( I selected all 4 layers and clicked on the LINK chain to link them, and I see the link on all 4 layers).
    My questions is, how do I style all 4 of these layers one time and it displays the same on all 4 layers? I thought once I linked the layers, then I went into styles and started to style a layer, all of them would take on the style uniform across the board. Apparently I am doing something wrong as when I go to style, it just styles one layer only while other 3 are plain.
    This would save time so I wouldn't have to do 4 each, but once for 4..
    Can anyone help? Thank you

    so I got these 4 layers linked by chain icon, and when I check off one of the eyeballs shouldn't all 4 layers go out? not seen in the project?
    Right now when I check off an eyeball of 1 of 4, that layer ONLY is not visible but I see the other 3 layers still in my project.
    You state they can be turned off and on together, clearly I am not seeing this...
    What do you think is wrong here?
