Linking Photoshop EPS Files with Clipping Paths

I'm running InDesign CS4 6.0.3 on a dual 2GHz G5 with Mac OS X 10.5.7.
We have a workflow that involves Photoshop EPS files being placed in InDesign with the object's clipping path set to Photoshop Path.  If the link is updated or relinked, InDesign no longer restricts the image to the boundaries of the path—either on screen or on export to PDF—even though choosing Object -> Clipping Path -> Options still shows the type set to Photoshop Path.  The only way that I have found to get the clipping path to fully apply to the image is to change the type from Photoshop Path to None and back to Photoshop Path, all while the Preview check box is on.  I tried different combinations of turning the Apply Photoshop Clipping Path option on and off at the time of initial placement and at the time of relinking with no effect on this behavior.
Assuming that using a format other than EPS and using transparency rather than clipping paths are not in play at the moment, my questions are:
1.  Is this a know issue with InDesign CS4?  If so, can we expect a fix soon?
2.  Is there anything that can be done on the user side that is less cumbersome than the workaround described above?

@Mark
Photoshop PSD is fine for all raster work. But if you have vector masks, vector shapes or text in the file then saving as PDF would be the better option, you can choose to remove the white background when importing the PDF in the Show Options of the Place Dialog box.
And that's null point anyway, as soon as you open a photoshop EPS file in Photoshop it rasterises everything. So what I said isn't a viable solution for this project. But to keep in mind that PSD will output as raster only and PDF can have transparency and raster + vector data.
Just thought I'd through that out there.

  • InDesign CS3 "White Box" when printing with linked Photoshop EPS files

This problem has been covered before, but never really resolved:
Robert Levine, "InDesign CS3 Erratic White Box Phenomenon with Placed Photoshop EPS files" #1, 1 Apr 2008 11:05 am
Now, I'm aware that we should no longer be using EPS files. I wholeheartedly agree. But until we can convince the department to change to another format (namely PSD or TIFF) for our vast library of images, I need a workaround.
It seems that setting the clipping path for each linked image to "Photoshop Clipping Path" resolves this issue. So I tried writing an AppleScript that would find each linked Photoshop EPS and set it's clipping path to "Photoshop clipping path", but it didn't work for me (my expertise with AppleScript is basically nil.)
Can anyone assist with the creation of this script? Or does anyone have a better suggestion for solving or working around the Photoshop EPS erratic white box printing problem?
    Thanks!

    >Why??????????
Because they've got zillions of EPS and have no time to resave them all and because it
    b should
work even if Buko doesn't like EPS...
(Your vendetta against EPS takes on strange proportions. Were you bitten as a child by a rabid EPS and have sworn to wipe them out? Must be an interesting story behind it ;) )
Brian, this script seems to do the job with one very important caveat: I see no way of finding out which path is active in the EPS (in case that more than one). So the script simply activates the first in the list.
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS3"
    set aDoc to active document
set allLinks to links of aDoc
repeat with n from 1 to (count allLinks)
set aLink to item n of allLinks
if link type of aLink is "EPS" then
set anEPS to parent of aLink
       tell clipping path of anEPS
set ePaths to photoshop path names
if (count ePaths) > 0 then
set clipping type to photoshop path
set applied path name to item 1 of ePaths
        end if
       end tell
      end if
    end repeat
    end tell

  • EPS photos with Clipping paths dont show in Quark Xpress

Anyone experience why a Photoshop file with a clipping path will not preview when brought into Quark Xpress unless I save the preview as a tiff?
    I use photoshop 7.1.

From desktopublishing.com's review of QuarkXpress 4
"The ability to control a picture's appearance in several areas. For example if you want to make a specific part of an image transparent, simply specifying the part using the clipping paths, the alpha channel that is embedded in the original picture, or the white area of the image. It can also read clipping paths in either TIFF or EPS format. Trapping tools and supports most popular color spaces, including Hexachrome, are also included."
and according to Wikipedia, Xpress 4 was released in 1997, eleven years ago with 4.1 coming two years later.
So, while I was just guessing thinking back over the last decade of versions, I was not far off, and I can't remember ever having a clipping path problem with tiffsthat version. Of course, if you didh't save the clipping path as a Clipping Path in Ps, then you would have a problem. That has been fixed now too.

  • Links to PDF files with relative paths from a Captivate 4 project

I'm creating a presentation in Captivate 4 (I'm making an exe file) with some links to PDF files; the links are buttons with the 'open URL or file' set. The presentation will be distributed in CDs and obviously the links will not work for they point to an absolute path in my PC. Is there another way to display external files? thanks

"file:\file folder\filename" is not a relative path.  It's still an absolute path because you're specifying the path all the way from the root drive, whether you used a drive letter or not.
A relative path shows where to find the other file in relation to the file that is calling it.
    Relative paths look like this:
myDoc.doc (if the file is in the same directory as the file calling it)
folderName/myDoc.doc (if the file is inside a folder in the same directory as the file calling it)
../myDoc.doc (if the file is located in the parent directory above the file that is calling it)
../../myDoc.doc (if the file is located two levels above the file that is calling it)
    etc

  • Bring in .psd file along with clipping path

Okay, this client has a very odd request. They want a collage of images put together in one file and they want the clipping paths to be attached. Then it's to be saved as an eps file. I'd like to do this in InDesign rather than Photoshop because the clipping path stays with the image in InDesign when you move it. However, I don't know how to save the file as an .eps file with the clipping paths attached. I open the .eps files in Photoshop and there are no clipping paths present.
Help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

My suggestion is to compose the entire collage in Photoshop. And if you need to preserve the clipping paths of each image of the finished collage, then convert the clipping path to a vector mask. Then you can drag a layer (that will include image and path) into one photoshop file to make collage.
Here are the instructions from previous post to convert a path into a vector mask.
To create a vector mask in PS, select the path in the Path Panel, then under Layer menu > Vector Mask > Current Path.

What do you mean by "a Path Layer was created"?  Path are in the path palette, there is a path in shape layers and they is a path in a vector layer mask. I have never seen a reference to a path layer before this.  When a path in the path palette is selected activate it wall also be shown in the image window.  Does not matter if there is a targeted layer or not.  Control points may or may not be displayed. Using Path tool you can select and select segments and show some or all control points, Path are editable.

  • Why does Illustrator CS4 save pdfs with clipping paths and make rasters of gradient areas

I am on a IMAC and upgraded to 10.6.8 Jan 2014. I am using CS4 Illustrator to create with. When i save my work as a pdf then reopen the pdf in Ill to make changes, the whole page has:
A.) Multiple clipping paths around it
B.) Most text has now become outlined. Not editable anymore.
C.) Gradient areas have multiple clipping paths of the single gradient area
D.) The gradient areas now become rasterized.
This is very frustrating as now all of my marketing files, some 300+, are worthless. I don't know where to look anymore to find the problem.
    Please help.
    Thank you very much

    John,
I have the presets as you have shown. I had been editing the supplied items as you suggested. Then figured i should ask the questions of those who are better than I.
But still a bit confused as to why the new save places clipping paths around the document.
Thank you John and Monika for your help.

I do a save as "pdf" in the format pull down tab. I save to a folder on the hard drive. Where is the "Illustrator editability" check box? I presumed it is in Acrobat some where
but i seem to be lost.
It is in Illustrator's Save Adobe PDF dialog, which pops up before the saved file is written.

Sorry i didn't mention this, but this seems to have occurred when using images and text from provided pdfs.
That's a critical fact. If you didn't do the original save, the above is moot, and it's too late to exercise any control over the save process. Someone else failed to save for editability. The only thing you can do is clean up/repair the content, (release clipping masks, rebuild rasterized elements, expand objects, etc.), and save correctly as AI. Then, if necessary, re-save as PDF with the correct settings.

  • Applying a colour to a 1 bit photoshop eps file

    Hi everyone,
I've placed a 1 bit photoshop eps file into Illustrator and I'm trying to colour it. I tried selecting it and applying one of the colour swatches but nothing happens. I wondered if anyone could help me out?
    Thanks in advance.

    gwh,
Nothing magical happens just because you save a raster image in a format that may contain vector artwork. A raster image is a raster image is an Argh.
If you just want it to appear with another colour with the help of Illy (you can actually recolour in Photoshop), you may cheat, such as this way:
    1) Create a rectangle (at least) the size of the raster image with the desired (darkest) colour;
    2) Place the raster image on top of 1) and in the Transparency palette flyout click Make Opacity Mask, with Clip ticked (unless you want a frame) and with Invert Mask ticked (unless you want a negative).

  • Objects with Clipping Paths?

If I import an image (jpg) with clipping path and covert it to a button how can I get it to display properly?
    Thanks in advance.

The problem likely is caused by you combining images of varying resolutions (Image > Image Size).
I wuld recommend applying the Path as a Vector Mask in the original document (change Background Layers to regular ones by double-clicking them) and moving that into the container file.

  • Is it ok in the long run to placing a RGB photoshop eps file into a Illustrator CS2 CMYK color mode

Is it ok in the long run to placing a RGB photoshop eps file into a Illustrator CS2 CMYK color mode document ?
I am using windows XP with Adobe Creative suite 2.
In both Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Illustrator CS2 have the same color settings.
If I take a RGB file that was created in Photoshop CS2 and place this file in a CMYK color mode document in Illustrator CS2, does this cause a problem for the output of the document ?
If you look at the ''Document Info'' window you can now see that the RGB file is now a CMYK file. Is this a good working habit ?
    Thanks in advance. :)

    >Is it ok in the long run to placing a RGB photoshop eps file into a Illustrator CS2 CMYK color mode document ?
Please explain why you would do such a thing? (Why RGB, and why EPS.)
    >If I take a RGB file that was created in Photoshop CS2 and place this file in a CMYK color mode document in Illustrator CS2, does this cause a problem for the output of the document ?
    Yes.
You are working in CMYK mode presumably because your Illustrator document is destined for output on a PostScript device -- e.g., a printing press. That means that your RGB image will undergo a space conversion somewhere in the process, and the questions are when and how?
The issue is compounded by the fact that Illustrator ignores color profiles embedded in EPS files by Photoshop. (Just another reason not to use EPS.)
By performing the conversion yourself in Photoshop, you take control of the process and ensure predictable color.

  • View EPS files with CS3

I have Adobe Illustraotor CS3, I only need it to view artwork files sent to me, I do not need to work on them, how can I view EPS files that were created in newer versions of Adobe

"Place" is Adobe's lingo for what other software simply calls "Import".
    Not exactly.
It would be interesting to read Adobe's official criteria (if it exists) for whether a particular format belongs in "Open" or "Place." But generically:
"Import" is more restrictive, in that it implies that an import filter is going to translate the incoming data into native objects. "Place" is a (rather awkward) throwback term to early page-layout programs (ex.: PageMaker), which were essentially intended to be "assembly" programs in which to assemble and arrange many multiple kinds of external files (text, raster, vector) into a page design. The implication of "Place" is that the receiving program does not necessarily have to "disassemble" or "break into" or even "understand" the content of the incoming file; it can just position and scale a reference to it on the page (i.e.; link).
The "Place" concept is particularly germane to positioning EPS files in page-layout apps. The operative word in EPS is "Encapsulated." It provides for a "capsule" that can contain a collection of objects that can be passed to/through many programs that don't necessarily understand its content.
(Remember, prior to its acquisition of Aldus, Adobe didn't even have a page-layout application.)
So "Import" is what Illustrator does (if it can) if you don't specify linking to the external file. You don't have to Open an EPS in Illustrator; you can link to it as an external file (i.e.; "Place" it on the page.)
To my mind, "Open" should be reserved for native files that were created in the program, "Import" should be reserved for non-native files that will be translated into native content, and "Place" (or "Insert") should be used for linking to external files. So Illustrator should not "Open" an EPS, since it may not have been created in Illustrator, and therefore may contain objects which will be translated with varying degrees of  fidelity; it should either "Import" it (translate it) or "Place" it (leave its content alone). By the same token, Illustrator should not claim to "Open" a JPEG, either.
But remember, Illustrator was essentially a visual PostScript editor.
Also it no doubt would arguably be more confusing to newcomers to provide an Open, Import, and Place command. (So why not make the terms more explicit and intuitive in the first place, perhaps like: Reopen, Translate, Link?)
And it's also no doubt considered more "impressive" from a marketing standpoint to claim that a program can "Open" various other-brand native files, and that's where my cynical mind suspects the runaway overlap stems from. So Illustrator can ostensibly "Open" certain version Corel Draw files, and vice-versa. (No, they can Import data from each other, to varying degrees of fidelity.) Adobe, of course, is not the only offender here. For example, FileMaker claims to "Open" Excel spreadsheets, too, when it really just imports the data.
At any rate, despite frequent claims to the contrary, EPS is not obsolete in the world at large beyond Adobe apps; not until non-Adobe apps can insert (place) and/or import (translate) PDF as a spot graphic. Microsoft Word (Windows), for example, can't do that. So EPS is still needed there for those who understand its purpose and limitations. Similarly, some softwares which drive cutters / plotters import EPS files with vector content, too; but don't claim to "open" native Illustrator files.

  • Is it possible to open eps files with Keynote?

I have some eps Clipart files that I have been trying to edit so I can use the individual clipart images instead of having to crop a jpef or tiff copy of the original file.
However, I can't seem to open the eps version of the file in any of the applications I have, which makes the files almost impossible to use...
Is there any way of actually opening the eps files with Keynote, or does anyone know of a program or app that I can open these with?
    Thanks!

There are a number of compatibility reasons why Keynote will not open eps files
I use Illustrator to open, then save as a different file any eps files which Keynote wont open directly.
