Linking text to a PDF

Hi
I am still lost I am new to this and I don't really know the
terms about the different folders. Everything is in one folder on
an M drive. Does that help solve my linking problem. I have a
screen shot I could send to someone however, I can't seem to upload
it to the form. I can send you the screen shot if you can help

First tell us this -
Please go to SITES | Manage Sites..., select the site name,
and click on
Edit. Click on the Advanced tab at the top. Tell me the
following -
Under LOCAL INFO
The contents of "Local root folder:"
Then tell us the path to the PDF file, please.

  • Possible to enter hyperlinks or other type of interfile links that function within PDF Package?

    We deliver our product as a PDF Package. The only apparent benefit is slightly enhanced search function and file navigation and more 'professional' appearance. BUT the huge downside is the loss of hypertext links between files.
    Our product comprises 90 modules all functioning seamlessly via a "Cartesian join": every module to every module. In this way, the collection of PDFs emulates a Help product when NOT packaged and when located in a single folder. User can navigate information (interfile) via hypertext links.
    Once packaged the hypertext links do not work, and even worse (i think I recall) display as errors in the PDF, so hyperlink field codes must be removed versus left in the file latent, in order to create the Package.
    We removed > 5000 hyperlinks in order to package the PDFs. Now I am unsure of the benefit. The loss of dynamic links between files greatly reduces usability as users must follow hard text references to other files, and must locate the target section manually by clicking bookmarks and searching on key words, in the PDF Package. Feels like the dark ages of print.
    Can anyone suggest a workaround (any type of link functionality) that enables links that dynamically open target file, when user clicks linked text IN A PDF PACKAGE (where PDFs have been packaged using the Create Package function)?
    We would like to restore that functionality to our PDF deliverable while still delivering as a Package.
    Thanks in advance for any responses.

    I read where PDF Package was introduced in Acrobat 8. I am using Acrobat Pro 9. I went from 7 directly to 9 so I've never seen Acrobat 8. It appears to me that PDF Package you refer to has been replaced with PDF Portfolio because I don't have the option when combining files to create a package. Are you using Acrobat version 8?
    I create all of my links between PDFs using an Acrobat plug-in called Compose. It has an option that allows for relative links. I've never used Word to link between documents so I don't think I can be of help. I have used InDesign for that purpose and they work for me. I do not combine my PDFs into a "package" or a "portfolio" per se. They remain as separate files just like they were on the system I created them on. I burn them to a CD, folders and all, and use bookmarks and links to navigate between all of them.
    I think we are doing two completely different things so I wouldn't be much help. Sorry.

  • Where on the Adobe website can I find a link for a free PDF to text converter?

    Where on the Adobe website can I find a link for a free PDF to text converter?

    I am trying to find a link to a free Adobe 'PDF to text' converter that I can refer users of my website to.
    This is for users who's screen reader software is not compatible with Adobe Reader.
    Up until last week I was refering my users to the following webpage, but now that link no longer works as the tool must have been moved.  I am just trying to find the new location:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/access_onlinetools.html
    Can anyone advise?
    Thanks

  • Convert http:\\ link text to normal text in pdf file.

    I want to convert all the http:\\ text as normal text, i.e., when I open a pdf file with Adobe Acrobat / Reader, all the text should be in normal format.

    All text in a PDF is "normal text" - so not sure what you are trying to accomplish.

  • I created a pdf form from a Word doc with 9 pt aerial font formatting; the text on the pdf form is aerial 9 pt, but the fields are formatted in courier 12 pt - How do I reformat the font in the fields??

    I created a pdf form from a Word doc with 9 pt aerial font formatting; the text on the pdf form is aerial 9 pt, but the fields are formatted in courier 12 pt - How do I reformat the font in the fields??

    You can set up a temporary button (or link, bookmark, etc.) and add the following JavaScript action:
    // Mouse Up script for a temporary button (or bookmark, etc.)
    // Change the font and font size for all text fields in this document
    for (var i = 0; i < numFields; i += 1) {
        var f = getField(getNthFieldName(i));
        if (f.type === "text") {
            f.textFont = font.Helv;
            f.textSize = 9;
    It also sets the font size, but you can remove that line if you don't need to do that.

  • Unexpected problem with links to URLs in PDFs

    Hi all
    I have some PDFs that contain some URLs which when hovered over or clicked behave as expected. I need to put these PDFs through our preflight software which checks and fixes things and writes out a new file. When the new PDF is viewed it no longer has active links. I can't change the preflight software but I just want to understand what's happening. The links in the PDFs are not created manually within whatever program created them (eg, Indesign) but are just make links by Acrobat/Reader (because the "Create links out of URLs option" is on) - if I turn that option off the links in the original PDFs stop working. In my tests some links still work in the new PDF but others not, but I can't see why some would and some wouldn't. Also, the links in the new PDFs that did work often didn't work the first time you opened the PDF but would the second time they were opened (after the program was restarted). The whole thing is just weird!
    The text in question is selectable text in the PDF (not vectorised or rasterised) and works consistently before the file is preflighted. But if it is still selectable text in the new PDF why wouldn't Acrobat/Reader show the links as normal. What could the preflight software have possibly done that would mess up that process?
    I'm checking the files in Acrobat Pro 10.1.10 (Windows), 8.3.1 and 9.5.5 on Mac.
    Any suggestions appreciated.
    thanks,
    Iain

    True. It preflights the original PDF and writes out a new file. The text in question is still selectable (not vectorised or rasterised) text in the PDF it outputs. Are there any special criteria for text that can't be made into links by Acrobat/Reader?
    I have created a couple of examples that illustrate the problem - that might help pinpoint exactly where the problem is occurring - https://www.dropbox.com/s/ltqxcht9ydgh9or/examples.zip. The "proper" hyperlink (created in ID) doesn't survive the process, which I expected. The web address at the bottom of the advert is not a proper hyperlink (it stops working if you turn off the "Create links out of URLs" option) but works in the before file but not the after.

  • Link Tool & Attachments in PDF

    I've assembled a 240-page pdf file that opens with the initial view showing the navigation panel for bookmarks and the page as fit to view.
    I have also attached an Excel spreadsheet to this 240-page pdf file, and it can easily be seen when a user goes View -> Navigation Panels -> Attachments.
    My question: using the Link Tool, can I link from text in the pdf to the Excel file that is attached?
    Thanks!

    Try67's correct - "Go to Page View" links will only work if the destination is a PDF file (though you could of course convert your spreadsheet into a PDF, attach that, and link however you wish - even if you keep the Excel file there as well for people to open manually).
    It's partly a technical issue (links in PDF files can't understand where in a non-PDF file you want them to take the user, as the host application for that file type will have it's own way of defining positions) and partly a security feature - links can be automated, and we don't really want PDFs auto-launching non-PDF attachments.

  • Pages '09: Can't Embed Link to Map in PDF

    I'm really stumped. Links to web pages that I embed in my Pages publishing docs operate as expected when I export the document to PDF. However, I'm having no success with links to Google, Mapquest or Yahoo maps. The links are live in Pages, but are dead once I export to PDF. The link text shows up blue and underlined in the PDF, but it's just static text. This is the case whether I open the PDF in Adobe Reader or Preview in MacOS, or in Adobe Acrobat Pro X in Windows XP. This is also happening on two different Macs. Again, the problem is only with links to map locations. Any ideas?

    I just repeated the steps that I had shared with you and achieved the same desired result: a PDF with a working map link. Here are the steps I just applied in outline form:
    In Pages '09 4.2, create the standalone text or text box content, that is to receive the hyperlink. If textbox, click outside the textbox to set the box in Pages. If you don't do this, applying a hyperlink to the enclosed text, and saving as a PDF will result in that text not appearing in your PDF.
    In your web browser (I used Safari 6.0.2), visit the map site of your choice; key in the location in the search window, and then double-click at least twice on the map to generate data in the map URL.
    Choose the link/embed button on the map page. Ensure the URL or tiny URL is selected. Copy it to the clipboard with either Edit > Copy, or Command+C. Perform no other clipboard activity until all steps are complete.
    In Pages, double-click the word you want to apply the hyperlink too. If it is multiple words, double-click the first word, hold the shift key down, hover the i-beam mouse pointer over the end of the last word, and click once. Your hyperlink target is now selected. Do not click within the Pages document.
    Again, in Pages, Insert > Hyperlink > Webpage.
    Enable hyperlink is selected.
    Triple-click the default Apple link to select it.
    Paste the map hyperlink from the clipboard using Edit > Paste, or Command+V.
    Press return to set the hyperlink to your selected text.
    Save your Pages document and Export the PDF.
    I have walked through this list and was able to recreate one, or multiple map links in the same document, that survived into the PDF file. Both Preview and Adobe Reader XI received active map links that worked.
    Hopefully, you will have better success with these steps and avert the Acrobat Pro route.

  • Links between two separate PDF documents - one as reference for another.

    Hello, everyone.
    I have a special project that I believe would be best addressed with the creation of two independent but linked PDF files. Let me be more detailed.
    My plan is to create a PDF file as a text document. In this text document there will be numerous references to documents and articles that I intend to place in a second PDF file. I would like the user to be able to open the text document PDF on the left side of his computer screen and also open the reference PDF with documents and articles on the right side of his computer screen. Every time the user comes across a section of the document that offers a link to an external reference the user would be able to click on it and the PDF on right would display the page corresponding to the reference on the PDF on the left. I hope this makes sense.
    Is it possible to create PDFs with this type of relationship ? I am guessing that in order for these links to work both PDFs will have to reside in the same directory so that the links (relative links in this case) may work properly. Is this true ? How can I make this work and is there a good document I can read or tutorial I can watch that would describe this in detail ?
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello, try67.
    Considering what you share I don't think this solution is the right one for me. I am trying to find a simple solution that would allow me to accomplish this task. Considering it would require scripting or programming the solution has just become more complex than what I feel I can comfortably handle.
    Thank you anyway for your help.

  • Converting image links from Word to PDF

    If I insert a picture into a Word file (Insert/Picture From File), select the picture and Insert/Hyperlink and then Convert to Adobe PDF, the hyperlink is still active in the pdf file as expected (Add Links is checked in the conversion settings).
    However, if I do the same but apply any layout options to the picture before attaching the hyperlink (e.g. Format Picture/Layout/Square text wrapping), Convert to PDF does not convert the link into the pdf file and the image appears as if no link had ever been set.
    Does anybody know of a solution to this problem?  Or is Acrobat 9 any better?  I am curently using Word 2000 and Acrobat 6 running on XP

    Thanks for the reply.
    I have already inserted the links within the pdf, so I do have a working document.  It is only a draft, though, and any subsequent editing requires going back to the original Word document, editing and converting again to pdf and then re-establishing the links - with over 30 images (linked to pre-exixting pdf documents) this last step is both tedious and error-prone!  Thanks for the warning re Acrobat 9 and Word 2000.  I had been thinking of upgrading ...

  • How can I make links clickable on all PDF viewers/readers?

    I have an InDesign document that's been built to be 'interactive' when printed as a PDF: along the top of each page are links that allow you to skip ahead in the document to specific pages. The links are created using boxes over the relevant text that are set up in an alternate layer of the Indesign document. The links just take the reader to a specific page of the PDF - not to an element on a page. There are minimal images - one on the cover and a logo on every page. It's mainly text.
    The links open in the PDF when viewed in Acrobat, and also on on Mac Book (it looks great!), but they don't open on iPads or other devices (and it looks like a complete dud when viewed this way). Are there some settings I can change/use to make my document 'clickable' from all readers?
    I'm very far ahead with this project and need to publish it urgently. I wasn't aware of this issue previously. Any suggestions/solutions gratefully received. Just to clarify - the links are mostly internal. I just need people to be able to jump around within the document.

    You cant transfer interactivity to a PDF when you print to PDF as you have written.
    PDFs have to be exported so that interactivity will live inside the PDF. Of course you have to set up links in the Hyperlink Panels.
    But not every reader is supporting interactivity. URL are supported from Reader and Apple iBooks. But you can't force the user to use a certain application anyway.

  • Preserving links when printing to PDF?

    I am looking for a way to preserve links when printing a web page to PDF.
    I've tried using the Print... PDF... Print to PDF command, using tried various browsers (Firefox, Safari, Camino) and various PDF readers (Acrobat 7, Acrobat Reader, Preview), and cannot find any combination that preserves the link, where one can click on a link in the saved PDF and go to the link's web address. The PDF displays a blue underlined text for the link, but Acrobat 7 confirms that there is no link attached to the text.
    Any suggestions? I saw another post on this topic, but the answer was specific to Preview.
    The only alternative I can think of is saving as a web page, but I would prefer to save as PDF.
    Thank you...

    If you own a copy of Acrobat 7 (not clear from your posting), use the, "Create PDF" button to select, "From Web Page," enter the url and press "Create." The links will work, and you can set the number of levels back from the original links that you want the addtional links to work.
    Note: "Acrobat Reader" doesn't exist anymore, it's been "Adobe Reader" for a couple of years now.

  • Inserting text to Acrobat PDF document, not able to create PDEText.

    Hi ,
    I have created a plugin for Acrobat, On press of MyPlugin's 'Insert' button it has to add the text to the document.
    Eg: If there is a Active PDF document, which contains a text "Hello" in it. I want to insert "World" (i.e, the document should have "Hello World") when i click 'Insert' button.
    I am writing the below function for this:
    static void InsertCitationText(PDDoc activePDDoc,PDPage pdPage , int pgNum , int pgOffset)
          PDEContent volatile pdecontent = NULL;
          PDPage pdPage = PDDocAcquirePage (activePDDoc, pgNum);
          pdecontent = PDPageAcquirePDEContent (pdPage, gExtensionID);
        Here I have to create PDEText pdeText and assign "World" to it. How do i do this??
         I tried to do this in TextCreate function by looking into the sample plugin snippets but its not creating the text , when i debug and see the value value of 'pdeText' its giving,  "pdeText not found".
               PDEText pdeText = TextCreate();
          PDEContentAddElem(pdecontent, kPDEAfterLast, (reinterpret_cast<PDEElement>(pdeText)));
          /* Put the contents back in the page */
          PDPageSetPDEContent(pdPage, gExtensionID);
          /* Clean up */
          PDPageReleasePDEContent(pdPage, gExtensionID);
    static PDEText TextCreate()
                PDSysFont sysFont=NULL; /* Used by PDEFont creation */
                PDEFont pdeFont=NULL; /* Reference to a font used on a page */
                PDEFontAttrs pdeFontAttrs; /* Font attributes */
                ASFixedMatrix textMatrix; /* Transformation matrix for text */
                PDEColorSpace pdeColorSpace; /* ColorSpace */
                PDEGraphicState gState; /* Graphic state to apply to operation */
                // Create a PDEText object
                PDEText pdeText = PDETextCreate();
                // Text to write to the PDF
                char *Title = "World";
                // Get system font
                sysFont = PDFindSysFont(&pdeFontAttrs, sizeof(PDEFontAttrs), 0);
                // Initialize the font descriptor then create the font reference.
                memset(&pdeFontAttrs, 0, sizeof(pdeFontAttrs));
                // Find the matching system font.
                pdeFontAttrs.name = ASAtomFromString("Verdana");
                pdeFontAttrs.type = ASAtomFromString("Type1");
                //Get system font
                sysFont = PDFindSysFont(&pdeFontAttrs,sizeof(pdeFontAttrs),0);
                pdeFont = PDEFontCreateFromSysFont(sysFont, kPDEFontDoNotEmbed);
                // Create a DEGraphicState object and set its attributes
    pdeColorSpace = PDEColorSpaceCreateFromName(ASAtomFromString("DeviceGray"));
                memset(&gState, 0, sizeof(PDEGraphicState));
    gState.strokeColorSpec.space = gState.fillColorSpec.space = pdeColorSpace;
                gState.miterLimit = fixedTen;
                gState.flatness = fixedOne;
                gState.lineWidth = fixedOne;
                // Create an ASFixedMatrix object
                memset(&textMatrix, 0, sizeof(textMatrix));
                textMatrix.a = Int16ToFixed(24);
                textMatrix.d = Int16ToFixed(24);
                textMatrix.h = Int16ToFixed(1*72);
                textMatrix.v = Int16ToFixed(2*72);
                //Create a PDEText Object
                pdeText =  PDETextCreate();
    PDETextAdd (pdeText, kPDETextRun, 0,(ASUns8 *)Title, strlen(Title), pdeFont, &gState,
                sizeof(gState), NULL, 0, &textMatrix, NULL);
                PDERelease ((PDEObject) pdeColorSpace);
                PDERelease ((PDEObject) pdeFont);
                return pdeText;
    Is there anyway i can add the "World" (as PDEElement) to document so that i can use in this function "PDEContentAddElem(pdecontent, kPDEAfterLast, (reinterpret_cast<PDEElement>(pdeText)));"  ???
    Or
    Should i use the above 'TextCreate()' huge function to create PDEText(PDEElement). If i have to use this method why the PDEText is not getting created? Am i missing something in the above function ??
    Please someone help me out, Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Chetan.

    Hi Irosenth,
    I will give a try for this, we must try to certain extent who knows we may Succeed. We must noe give-up easily.
    You have not said this is impossible, but you say this is difficult. Rite ??
    If you give me support, i dont think it would be difficult.
    First i will try to insert a text in a blank page.This is possible rite ??
    I saw a discussion in this forum, http://forums.adobe.com/message/2092443#2092443 , this is 2 years old. This guy has inserted the text into PDF document.
    I refered this link and try to insert a text in Active PDF document but text is not getting inserted into it.
    Please let me know what i am making wrong in the below function,
    static void InsertCitationText(PDDoc activePDDoc, int pgNum , int pgOffset)
          PDEContent volatile pdecontent = NULL;
          PDPage pdPage = PDDocAcquirePage (activePDDoc, pgNum);
          pdecontent = PDPageAcquirePDEContent (pdPage, gExtensionID);
          PDEText pdeText = TextCreate();
          PDEContentAddElem(pdecontent, kPDEAfterLast, (reinterpret_cast<PDEElement>(pdeText)));
          /* Put the contents back in the page */
          PDPageSetPDEContent(pdPage, gExtensionID);
          /* Clean up */
          PDPageReleasePDEContent(pdPage, gExtensionID);
    TextCreate() function is same as the one which i mentioned in this discussion. Please let me what i am making wrong in that function aswell. Its not creating the specified "World" pdeText. Please help me out for this. Thanks in advance.

    Chetan.

  • Cant seem to find any information about reading text on a pdf browser or open word document for coded UI.

    Hi forum,
            I'm currently building automation for this web application for my job that have links that opens either a word document, a web page or opens up a pdf document in the browser in the same screen.  All i'm trying to do is read
    the text from the pdf browser, or the word document that opens up and read the related text off these documents.
    I know how to read the related text from the web page that opens but for
    the other two options i dont really know what i have to do.  I read the ALM add for word might
    work but i haven't tried to implement this or know if this will help me.
    When i read these strings out i plan on comparing them and doing an assertion on them.
    Can someone point me to the right direction on doing this.
    Tahnks

    Hi skinny_Will,
    The coded UI test would have some limitations for the Word/office controls by design.
    To really read and compare the text value, I'm afraid that we would use certain extension tool/add-in and custom code for it.
    Please check the Visual Studio Coded UI for Word Add-In.

  • Can you link text to an "Open in New Browser Window" behavior?

    Newbie here... the title asks the question. I know you can link an image in this way, but can you do it with text?

    Yeah.  The manner in which PDF files are handled depends on your end user's computer/browser settings, installed plug-ins, etc...  In some cases the PDF will launch in the browser window.  In other cases it may download to the user's hard drive or it may launch inside Acrobat (if they have it).  Too many unknown variables here...
    The best advice I can give you is to keep it simple.  Link directly to your PDF file and use target="_blank" to open it in a new window or tab.  And be nice to your site visitors, tell them it's a PDF file and approx. how big the file size is in KB.
