Linking to a vCard file in Firefox

I just tried to add a link to download a vCard (.vcf) file -
seems to work fine in Internet Explorer, but in Firefox, it just
shows up in the browser window like a text file.
http://www.kameli.com/tcleaves.html
i've seen other websites where you can download the .vcf file
fine in Firefox.
how can I fix this? is there something I can add to my code
to tell the browser how to handle the file type?

• Opening a link in a pdf file in Firefox

When I click on a link to an URL in a pdf file, I get this message:
"Location of the web browser has not been specified. Please do this in Preferences." However, I can't find any place in Preferences where I can specify the browser I want to open these links with.

Which browser? How are you plannnig to use Java, that's usually used on a server?

• [Solved] Way to prevent acroread from opening pdf files in firefox?

Hi,
I recently installed acroread from aur and now everytime when I click on a link to a pdf-file in firefox, the acroread plugin opens the file in the browser.
Before I installed acroread I got a dialog, where I could choose what to do with the pdf-file.
Under Preferences->Applications I selected "Always ask" for the application type "pdf" but obviously this option is not considered.
Thanks for any ideas.

Try disabling Adobe Reader plugin in Firefox.  Edit>Pref>Manage Add-ons>Plugins.

• When I try to click on a download link for a .pdf file Firefox does not recognize the MIME type and tries to download the file as "index.php"

When visiting a site I frequent I tried to download a linked .pdf file. Previously I've used Firefox 7.0.1 to download the link with no problem. Using Firefox 8 however I the browser does not recognize the .pdf link's mime type. Instead of recognizing the download link as a .pdf file Firefox 8 tries to download it as "index.php". Firefox 8 does this with .doc files and .txt files as well. When I downgrade to 7.0.1 again the problem disappears.

Hi hakmacpace,
I'd try starting Firefox in Safe Mode. If you don't have the issue while all of your add-ons, extensions, and themes are disabled, you can try adding them back in one by one until you find the culprit. You should look at the Extensions and Themes troubleshooting guide and the Troubleshooting plugins article as well.
You could also try Creating a new profile.
Hopefully this helps!

• Mozilla firefox get hang , when i click on a link to download a file using Interenet Download manager. any solution??

When i click on any link to download a file ( software, document etc.) using idm , the firefox get hang for sometime till the download dialogue box don't come. any solution to this problem.??

Try to start Firefox in Safe mode. This mode disables all extensions, user customizations, hardware acceleration, etc. temporarily for diagnostic and troubleshooting. If Firefox works find in Safe Mode, then this is likely an add-on issue. Restart Firefox in normal mode, then type "About:addons" (without the quotes) in the address bar. Disable your extensions one by one, restarting Firefox between each one, until you find the trouble maker. Once you do, you can disable that add-on and report the issue to that add-on's developer.
A few other basic trouble shooting things you can try is this:
Run all Windows Updates, install all needed service packs, etc.
Update your graphics driver (Firefox uses your graphics card for some rendering, and an out of date graphics card driver can cause problems. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-upgrade-my-graphics-drivers.
Update all your plugins (Flash, Java, etc.): http://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck/.
Download and Install MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, run a full Scan. http://www.malwarebytes.org/. This helps check that there are no viruses on your computer causing issues. You can uninstall this program after you clean off any infections.

• I cannot save a .vcf file in Firefox but I can with other browsers

When I click in a link that points to a .vcf file Firefox will not save it in the .vcf format. This links works fine with IE.
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== When I tried to download a vCard file.

Hello Allen.
I don't think Firefox supports the vCard format by default... But you may want to try this extension, as I think it's what you want:

I hope this helps.

• When I click a link to a pdf file, I'm only presented with a save box,not a choice to just view the file. I have been able to view linked files in the past, but not anymore. I have to save the file to downloads then go to downloads and open it.

when selecting a link to a pdf file , I'm only given the choice to save it ..not view it ? How do I change that ..?

That depends on how the server sends the file.
If this is a MIME (content) type that is supported by other software then you can open the file automatically.
If the file is send with a generic content type like application/octet-stream or as Content-Disposition:attachment then you can only save the file.

• Viewing PDF files in Firefox

Not sure where to post this, so here goes...
I'm using Firefox 2.0x and Adobe Reader 8.0 on iMac Core2Duo. When I click on a link to a pdf file, the file opens nicely in the browser, but at the same time downloads a copy to my Downloads folder. I don't always want a copy of the pdf. How can I prevent the file from downloading?
In Safari, I do not get the auto download; but can view the file in a browser window.

The Firefox support forums are at http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=38&sid=ff76c480f43cb2ca0f66992abc0 b96ce
A search on PDF there led to one thread at http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=531066&sid=92d8bb8b44de4e8178ce56c 069e63ad9
This would suggest that if you go to Preferences>Content>File Types and open the Manage button, you may be able to alter the action of a PDF file if it is listed there among your download file types.

This is probably some corruption in the settings file that stores the on-screen position of the Firefox window. Could you try the steps in this thread: opens off monitor screen. Any luck?

• Opening .pdf files in Firefox 3.6.13 spawns "infinite" tabs -- amazing!

If I click a link to a .pdf file, Firefox will open up tab after tab after tab -- they go shooting across the top of the tab bar (it's incredible). I can use Task Manager to force FF to quit (and then manually end the Firefox.exe process since it doesn't seem to fully stop in a timely fashion). I have to tell FF not to "save and quit" otherwise on relaunch, it will just repeat the problem. If I just quit and manually relaunch FF, it is OK -- until the next time I open a .pdf link!
I am using XP, so I used Add/Remove programs to uninstall Acrobat, and then I downloaded the new version and installed it. I re-checked the Acrobat plugin from within FF (Tools ->Add-ons->Plugins->Find Updates) and the current version is up-to-date.
Help is appreciated!

There are other things that need attention:
Your above posted system details show multiple Java Console extensions.<br />
You can uninstall (remove) the Java Console extensions and disable the Java Quick Starter extension, you do not need them to run Java applets.
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Java#Multiple_Java_Console_extensions
Disable the Java Quick Starter extension: Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions
Control Panel -> Java -> Advanced tab -> Miscellaneous -> Java Quick Starter (disable)

• How do I create a LINK to BOOKMARKS which will open FireFox like favorites and IE ?

Click on a 'link' in FAVORITES and the default browser will open and present the web page for the link!
HOW do I CREATE a 'BOOKMARKS' that will display my FireFox links that will open the default browser ((FireFox)) and present the web page for the link?????

Firefox can export your bookmarks as a web page when you exit the browser, and you can set a specific location for that, so in theory you could have a shortcut to a reasonably up-to-date version of the file. I don't know whether it can be pinned to the Windows 8 start screen, but a shortcut on the traditional desktop interface should allow this regular swapping of the target file (or you could simply save it to the desktop directly).
To set this up, you need to do a little work in the about:config preferences editor. Note: this is based on cor-el's post here, and I haven't tried it myself yet.
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste book and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML preference to switch it from false to true.
When Firefox exits, your bookmarks should be exported to a web page named bookmarks.html in your currently active Firefox settings folder (profile folder). To change the location and/or file name:
(4) Select and copy the following preference name:
browser.bookmarks.file
Next, right-click any existing preference and choose New > String
Paste browser.bookmarks.file as the name and then Firefox will prompt you for the location. You can put anything temporarily, then come back and double-click to edit and paste in the desired full location and file name such as:
C:\Users\username\Desktop\mybookmarks.html
(Your username obviously will be different than mine...)

• How to open pdf or fdf file through firefox 3.0.5?

Hi all,
I am trying to open a fdf file through firefox in linux machine by clicking the link on that it wants to open a fdf file from remote location. When I am trying to open then it will show an error message in error console like:
Security Error: Content at http://172.16.3.116:8080/ManuscriptScreening/source/journal/ProductionEntry.jsp may not load or link to smb://editor:edit*[email protected]/Copyediting/ELS/Manuscript_Screening/MS/RDTEST/02-Process/RDTEST-D-08-10245.fdf
Can any body give me a solution for this problem? I am using smb to fetch files from server. In my linux machine we are using Adobe Acrobat 5.0 professional version and also Adobe Reader 8. The link is available in jsp page.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).<br />
See Troubleshooting extensions and themes and Troubleshooting plugins<br />
<br />
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.<br />
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.<br />
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

• Pdf file and Firefox 20.00

I'm not sure what's happening here but when I view a pdf file in Firefox 20.00 from a link on the website it shows all the text as below?
%x$#%-%%#*x%
If I view the pdf in Google Chrome or Safari the text is perfectly ok. Anyone come across this before, obviously something is wrong with Firefox?
Cheers

Hi Os,
your "%x$#%-%%#*x%" I for me defined it as a bug and so I used my link only as an example for the working FF, so the text isn't of interest per se.
My screenshot should show you (ensuring at the same time an answer to Dave) my FF "Einstellungen" (=settings). As you can see in my screenshot from above FF "took" Adobe Acrobat". You/we have the choice, see new screenshot.

Hi Hans,
Thanks for the info. I've gone into preferences and set Firefox to use Adobe Acrobat Professional now, which automatically downloads the pdf to my desktop rather than open it up in the browser. As you say it must be a bug because it's only since v20.00 Ive noticed the difference. Infact before that Firefox never opened it up in a browser window but always downloaded the pdf so when the automatic update happened something in 20.00 has changed.
Cheers
