LINKING TO SITE ALREADY PUBLISHED ON .MAC

Hi,
I have recently changed computers following a disk failure. I use .Mac and iDisk to back up all personal files and therefore no data was lost, but there is one rally annoying problem: I cannot link the newly installed iWeb to my pubished pages on .Mac.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem, or is the uploading of pages from .Mac simply not yet supported. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You .Mac homepages and iWeb published pages are kept in separate areas and are mutually exclusive of one another. You can continue to edit your .Mac homepages via the .Mac Homepage interface, but you will not be able to edit them through iWeb. The reverse is also true...iWeb published pages can only be edited within iWeb.
You can, however, link the two of them so that they appear to your visitors to be one webspace. This is done by providing links to each on either webspace. WillG4PB has an excellent tutorial explaining the whole process of Redirecting to and from .Mac and back. Check it out here...

  • Podcasting on an iWeb site not published to .mac

Hi, I have created a website with iWeb which is hosted externally to .Mac. Everything works fine except I created a podcast (m4a file) which I'd like to include on my site. Can anyone let me know the steps I need to take to get this to be available to people using any PC when they visit my website? Do I need to convert it to another file type, embed a plug-in or whatever? Please explain in idiot proof terms as I'm a novice at this! Many thanks.

.m4a is a pretty standard file format. Sometimes PC users have better luck when they change the extension of the file to .mp4. But I'm not recommending this approach.
Here's where I am going with this... If you publish any kind of media file with iWeb -- video or audio -- iWeb will by default use (or expect to use) QuickTime to play them. This is true whether the site is being viewed on a PC or a Mac. The QuickTime coding is right there in the iWeb generated HTML files. Therefore, as long as your PC viewers have QuickTime installed (the latest version of QuickTime7 preferably), they will have no problem with the .m4a extension files.

  • Photo gallery not displaying after site is published to .mac

I would like to thank everyone who reads and responds to these posts. I would be completely lost without it. Apple is lucky to have such great forums. That being said, I need help again...
I finally (thanks to much help) got both my websites up and running without interfering with each other in the publishing process. Now my second website http://web.mac.com/dkeesey01/CAAHA/Welcome.html or www.caaha.org is up but the photo gallery won't show. I published to a folder and it works fine, but it won't work in safari, firefox, or internet explorer.
    Thank you!

Update iWeb to 2.0.4. It will solve a lot of problems.
Then do *Publish all to MobileMe*.

  • Move a site from one Mac to another without losing sites already there

I would like to move a site from one Mac to another without losing the websites that I have already built on the other Mac. Transfering the Domain file is not helping. Is there away to open the new domain file and adding those sites to the domain file associated with this copy of iWeb? I have searched the discussions but am not seeing any clear answers. They all seam to invilve new users or losing the sites already on that mac.

I seem to have solved my own problem. This may help other users. I found a tip and a web page that suggested moving the Domain File from the application support folder to another on the desktop on one of the computers and then putting the 2nd Domain File from the other computer in a separate folder on the desktop. This is because you can not change the name of the Domain File . Then by double clicking the Domain File with the site wanted, iWeb opens with that set of sites.
I started with what was to be the new master Domain File and stated a new site with a blank page. saved, did not publish and closed iWeb. Opened from the other Domain File and then clicked and opened the site and page I wanted, then selected all, copied all and closed iweb. Went back to the master Domain File , opened iWeb using that, went to the blank page and pasted in the page from the other Domain File from the other computer. Saved, closed iWeb and repeated till I had all pages. Changed the names to match the sites and Pages. I did not allow iWeb to publish during this process. Took all of 10 minutes and I now have a Domain File with all the sites in one place. I then copied this file back into its original location in Library/application support/iWeb on both computers. I now have all sites in iWeb on both computers.

  • Publish to .mac AND other server

    Question:
I already publish to .mac - no problems there. I need to publish another website on another server. I published to a folder, used Fetch to upload it - works great (I know I lose some of iWeb's features, but that can't be helped).
Here is my question - now when I publish to .mac - the second site I created for the other server loads on my .mac space also. This is not a huge deal - I have no links from one site to the other, it just seems like a waste of space. Is there a way I can choose to upload only my primary site to .mac and not the other one as well?
    Scott

    Hi Scott,
The best thing to do in your case is to separate your two sites into two separate Domain files. That way the two sites can be edited and published independently from one another, so you don't have to have both sites uploaded to .Mac.
If you are in sort of the beginning stages of doing this second site, it might be easiest to start over in a new Domain file. If however, you do not wish to start over with the second site, then splitting off this second site to another Domain file can be done as well.

  • Several iweb sites 2 publish?

I have created a first site and now that I have a better understanding of iweb I want to build a new site. I clicked new site and have published it to mobileme using different domain names. When i try and visit the site i am directed to the first site.
Is it possible to build a second site and publish with a site already published? The second site has a big long name with the first sites name embeded into the second site! Can anyone help?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Where are you hosting the sites?
Are both sites in the same domain.sites2 file?
Have you purchased a domain name for any of those sites and what method of domain name forwarding are you using?
Here's some info on Multiple Sites with Domain Name(s) in a Single MobileMe Account
Here's how to have multiple sites in a single MMe account with one or more sites having a domain name.
    A. All sites are in the same Domain.sites2 files
1 - only one site can use the CNAME method of domain name forwarding and it must the top site in the left hand pane of iWeb.
2 - the other sites must use URL domain name forwarding which directs the domain name to the site's full MMe URL, http://web.me.com/MMeUsername/SiteName, or, if there is no domain name, just MobileMe's full URL.
    B. Each site is in its own Domain.sites2 file.
Again, only one site can use CNAME forwarding. This presents a problem since CNAME forwarding directs the domain name to the basic MMe account URL: http://web.me.com/MMe_Username/ which uses an index.html file in the root folder of the account, iDisk/Web/Sites. Each time a new site is published or an existing site uses the File->Publish Entire Site a new index.html file is created in that root directory, iDisk/Web/Sites folder, directing the browser to that particular site. This file is what the CNAME method uses to find the site it represents.
Therefore some steps must be taken to assure that the index.html file in the MMe Accounts root directory always points to the correct site. This can be accomplished is three ways.
1 - don't use the CNAME method. Just use URL forwarding . This, IMO, is the simplest method as it doesn't requre any additional effort on the user once the domain name has been set up.
2 - use the following method suggested by Wyodor in this topic: Is it possible to have multiple sites when using ur Domain name?
    In iWeb domainfile 1:
Create a dummy site : _dummy
    with a blank page.
Create your working site : Whatever
    Add pages
Publish both Sites to the same same location on the same server.
Your _dummy site is now the default Site.
    Check.
    In iWeb domainfile 2:
    Create/Use your CurrentSite.
Move a page to the top of the Site and back. Publish the Site.
iWeb will create a new index.html file in the root of the server and from now on CurrentSite is the default site.
    Check.
From now on, never move your Whatever Site to the top of the list in the iWeb sidebar and never change the page in the _dummy site.
Simply do not touch your _dummy ever again. And never forget that.
3 - use Ethmoid's suggested method in Using two sites - setting one up with separate domain? or republishing the entire site that uses CNAME forwarding. Just making a minor change and publishing the site changes does not create a new index.html file.
The entire site must be republsihing in order to get that new site.
Or keep a copy of the CNAME site's index.html file on your Mac and replace it manually in the iDisk/Web/Sites fodler when necessary.
NOTE: the CNAME method provides a shorter URL: http://www.DomainName.com/Site_Name/PageName. CNAME does not have masking.
The URL forwarding displays the full MMe URL:
    http://web.me.com/MMeUsername/Domain_Name/PageName.
With domain name masking that will be shortened to:
http://www.Domain_Name.com for every page of your site.
However, with masking visitors will only be able to bookmark and enter at the first page of the site. If a page is refreshed the visitor is taken back to the first page. Also search engines will only be able to index the first page of the site.

  • Hyper links work in i-web but when site is published it does not....HELP!!

Hi group. I am fairly new to I-web and I mus tsay I love the program. It cam with my new I-mac and this is my first mac as I am a "swticher" from the PC days!! I was surprised that the mac came with such a good program as -i-web. Anyway....
Ok, I deleted the automatic navigation bar, as I wanted to create one using text hyperlinks. In the design mode in i-web, All my links work properly and navagate me from page to page. However once the site is published the links do not work, expect the contact link for sending and e-mail. Not sure why this is happening.
I even choose "publish entire site" to refresh everything and still nothing. Here is the site so maybe you have an idea
    www.visionmusiconline.com
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Dave

The most obvious answer would be that the text is being covered by the graphic.
For a quick fix, you could try bringing the text to the front, publish to a local folder and launch the site from your hard drive to test it by double clicking the index.html file.
Try building your graphic and then taking a screenshot of it as described here....
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/Tricks/PhotoMagic.html
Drag the JPEG onto the page and then drop the text boxes with the link text on top.

  • When I opened iweb it opened as a file I deleated. I have a published website with godaddy and would like to update. How can I open the existing iWeb app to the site that is already published?

When I opened iweb it opened as a file I deleated. I have a published website with godaddy and would like to update. How can I open the existing iWeb app to the site that is already published?

You cannot retrieve the already published site as iWeb CANNOT open it - it has no import facility.
You need your domain.sites file, which you can find under User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites.  You do not need any kind of account for this because it is your domain.sites file that resides on the hard drive of your Mac anyway.  Find this file and you can alter your website.
Use a spotlight search to try and find it and if this does not work you can download something called Find Any File.  If you really can't find it, then you'll have to start from scratch because iWeb cannot open a site that is already published.

  • How to recreate an already published site from a saved copy....

I recently lost a drive and was only able to salvage my documents folder in which I had saved a copy of an already published iWeb site. How do I relink these files? The site is fully funktional and I have all the files on the same computer...I've reinstalled the app..Now what???
    PowerBook 17'   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

The file that you need is in your domain.sites file, it lives here:
    User / Library / Application Support / iWeb / Domain.sites
If you dont have this file, then you cannot do anything other than start again, maybe copy paset from the published site.
All you need to do is put your old domain.sites file in the location above and open iWeb.
You may need to create the /iWeb folder, to do this open iWeb, add a page, any page and then Quit iWeb. This creates a domain file in the /iWeb folder and tells iWeb where to look for it. Delete this new domain file and replace it with your old one.

  • Will changing to 08 remove all my iWeb sites already designed and published

I have a ton of web sites already designed and published with iLife 06 and my dot mac account. I bought iLife 08, but before I install it, I want to make sure it's not going to delete my sites. Does it automatically put them into 08 or what? If it does put my other sites into 08, are they still editable then in 08?

You will not lose any of your already published and saved iWeb creations. The only problem I ran into when I updated was that most of my text hyperlinks were a different size font and the navigation menu at the top was aligned slightly differently (I had a graphic behind mine). Just little tweaky details like that. That change is only on your saved iWeb files on your computer, which means you can fix it before you upload it to the web for all to see. You will probably only have that problem if you modified the default template fonts like I always do. If you stuck with the templates, you should be fine.
Once you do update, it is worth it! You are only able to do more than before without losing anything you have already created, at least in my experience. There are a ton of little things that get me closer to creating the website I envision - like being able to choose the hyperlink colors and formats.
So install it and enjoy without any worries. In my book you have nothing to lose.

It is Correct for your Current OS = Leopard = 10.5.8
The first step in Upgrading... is to Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x
It is Not available as a download...
    Do this first...
Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Tech Specs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If so Contact Apple in your Country to Purchase a Snow Leopard Disc...

    In the US...
    1-800-MY-APPLE or 1-800-676-2775
After the Successful Install, run Software Update to get the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...

  • How do I open a previously published site that is on .Mac to my new iWeb?

I have a site published on .Mac that I did on my old Mac which had the previous version of iWeb. I just bought a new Mac with iWeb '08 and I can't figure out how to get it to synch with my published site.
    Anyone figure this out?

I hate to tell you this, but I asked Apple technical support that very question when the iWeb update Killed my domain file. Which, to be absolutely fair, I did NOT have backed up. I could have saved myself a ton of grief if I had backed up before I updated. TONS!
I asked if there was someway to take my perfectly good site from dot mac and put it in iWeb. He indicated that it was not possible, the only route is to use your old site as a "guide" and build it from scratch.
I'd love to be proven wrong on this one!
    Best of luck!
