Linking to TOC Books

Greetings,
I am using RX7 to develop a WebHelp project. My client would
like to have Splash page which allows the user to click a link and
display a specific TOC Book.
I can meet the client requirement by creating separate
projects and linking from the Splash page to the project.
Is it possible to create a single project, have the Splash
page display and then open a specific book when the corresponding
link is clicked?

I suggest creating a topic that is your splash page. Then, in
the Properties dialog of the TOC book in the TOC pod, link a topic
to the book. Next, the link on the splash page would point to the
topic that is linked to the book.
If you don't want the splash page in the TOC, you could leave
it out.

    do books with links, but I don't know how to link text to TOC

    Hi kamarques and welcome to the forums.
    I'm not sure I understand exactly what you are trying to do.
    When you link to a book in the TOC, you are actually just
    connecting that book to a topic. If you want to link text to that
    same topic, you would just select that topic when you hyperlink the
    text.

  • Webhelp RH8: TOC book not linking to topic

    Hi (again),
    I seem to have another little issue.
    In generating our helpsystem, we would like to have books that display general information when clicked and also display the subsequent topics. That all works fine, I link a topic to the TOC book and it displays the contents of the selected page.
    However, when I only have a book (no topics), linking a topic does not work. In the output it displays as a page. Is there a way I can have a book linked to a topic while there are no other topics in that book?

    Thanks RoboColum(n) for your pointer. Due to time limitations I could only look at it briefly and give it one try. Redirecting didn't work in this instance. I have a few redirect pages which work fine but so far I haven't managed to get a book to display when there is only one page in that book. For now I have avoided the problem by having an empty page when the book is clicked. Not pretty and I will be looking at this again when there is more time.

  • Best way to handle duplicate headings stemming from linked TOC book?

    What's the best way to handle duplicate topic titles stemming from TOC books that contain links to a topic that you want to have appear in the body? The problem I've had for years now is that the TOC generates one heading, and the topic itself generates one heading.This results in duplicate headings in the printed output.
    I have a large ~2500 topic project I have to print every release, and to date we've been handling it in post-build word macros, but it's not 100% effective, so we're looking to fix this issue on the source side of the fence. On some of our smaller projects, we've actually marked with the heading in the topic itself with the Online CBT and that seems to work. We're thinking of doing the same to our huge project unless there's a better way of handling this. Any suggestions?

    The alternative is to remove the topic from the print layout so that it only generates by virtue of its link to the book.

  • TOC - Books Linked to Topics?

    I'm hoping that I'm just overlooking something and that my suspicion isn't true.
    I have chapters, several levels deep of subchapters and then, of course, my topcs.
    Something like this...
    Help Root 
         L Chapter Top
              L Subchapter
                   L Subsubchapter
                        L Topic
    I want each of my chapters to link to topics - basically introductory pages that I can't have at the same level as the topics because it woudn't make sense.  I seem to be able to do this in RoboHelp HTML but not in RoboHelp for Word?

    I think your suspicion is true. You cannot add a link to a book in the TOC when using RH for Word. You also can't have a page under a page in the format you describe or a book under a page. All pages do fall before books when it comes to the TOC hierarchy.

    An alternative you might want to think about is to put each chapter in one topic. Then add mid-topic links to the subsections on the page. You could also include this mid-topics in the Index. At the top of the chapter, build the contents of that section and make jumps to the mi-topics on the page. At the top, you could also include your intro.
    Another alternative is to build an overview page with your intro.

  • New TOC Book not appearing in WebHelp output

    Hi
    My project is proceeding fairly well, considering I've only
    been using RH for about six weeks - thanks, in no small part, to
    the advice I've found in this forum. I'm hoping someone can help me
    with a niggling problem I'm having.
    My project is based on a textbook written by my colleagues.
    RH has successfully imported all the header formatting from Word
    and the resulting TOC is almost perfect. My problem is that my
    header 1s link to sections of the book, so I don't have a header
    that just gives the chapter name. If I do create these as header 1s
    they give me a clickable entry in the TOC which leads to a page
    with no content.
    I'd like to have an entry in the TOC that gives the chapter
    name but which isn't clickable, i.e. is only there so users can
    orient themselves and see what each section is about.
    I thought I could do this by creating a new TOC book in the
    TOC, but not linking it to any page. I've done this, saved
    everything and generated afresh, but when I view the webhelp
    layout, the book I just created doesn't appear in the TOC. Is there
    a way I can do this?

    Hi Colin.
    You may be able to do just this with a bit of wizardry! Check
    out the RoboWizard's
    tips
    'n tricks file. It has help on how to set-up redirect topics.
    Create one of these and assign it to the book. The redirect topic
    would then just redirect the user to another topic.

  • TOC Book Not Working Properly

    Offering this info for anyone else who might run into a similar situation.  When reviewing the browse sequence for an RH 10 project, I noticed one topic (page) displaying where a TOC book should have been.  The topic being displayed was the topic associated with the book, but the book's subtopics were not being displayed.  The topic being displayed for the book included a link to a subtopic listed for the book in the RH project, but the link was dead.  The link for the topic worked fine when using the CTRL+W to view the topic from RH.  To resolve the issue, I tried deleting and re-adding the book.  Recompiled.  No change.  I repositioned the book (it happened to begin with the same few words as the two previously listed books, and I wanted to eliminate the possibilty of an issue based on beginning multiple books with the same text).  No change.  Deleted .cpd file (it was over 5MB), opened the project to recreate .cpd file, and then recompiled again.  No change. Copied and pasted text from all topics involved into new topics of the same screen name but assigned new .htm page names (so topic text and screen names were identical).  Updated links to match newly created topics.  Re-added book to TOC.  Recompiled.  This worked.  TOC book now displayed with subtopics, and link from main topic to subtopic was functional again.  Anyone else run into something like this, where a TOC book did not display correctly, possibly as a result of a corrupt topic/page within the book that appeared to work fine in RH project?

  • TOC Book Problem - RoboHelp 8 - WebHelp Pro

    Hello, I'm having a problem in a generated build of help to RoboServer 8.  TOC books are linking to the previous page of the toc book above that particular book and this rings true throughout the TOC.  I didn't add any links and just wanted to books to be just that books and when you click the book the subtopics within that book should display.  Anyone have this problem and what can I do?  I see that I can link the book to a particular page, but don't really want that.  Any suggestions to correct this problem quickly.  We just had a release of our product over the weekend and this is causing quite a stir.  Thanks, Lana

    I have come acoss issues being reported in adobe forums that webhelp output cannot be viewed in IE 10. Fixes are provided for Robohelp 10  @http://forums.adobe.com/community/robohelp/robohelp_webhelp?view=discussions where we are given a link with the fixes @.http://helpx.adobe.com/robohelp/kb/help-visible-using-win-8-ie.html but no fixes are available for robohelp 8. Please provide a similar fix for robohelp 8
    Request the adobe development team to get back ASAP as we do not have the timeframe to upgrade to robohelp 10.

  • Plus/minus icon for TOC books

    Afternoon all,
    So I see that in RH8, I can create a TOC. When in the RH8 application, the TOC Pod shows +/- or expand/contract icons to the left of each TOC book, with little dashed lines to each book/page.
    But when I generate WebHelp, no such +/- icons appear.
    Am I missing something? Or is the +/- just a feature of the TOC within RH8? I'd like them to display in my WebHelp output like they do in CHMs. I don't necessarily need the dashed lines.
    Any clue you can bat my way...

    open in Firefox' issue was raised, so I was hoping that someone
    might be able to help with my problem that seems to be closely
    related...
    Problem: I am generating WebHelp using RoboHelp for HTML
    version 7 and viewing in Firefox 2.0.0.11. The TOC books don't open
    in Firefox (IE is okay) via autosync unless I have previously
    opened them manually. If I manually open half the books, then only
    those books will autosync - it's as if Firefox has to be shown each
    book before it will automatically open it when browsing or
    searching for topics, etc. When I re-open the WebHelp I have to
    manually open all the books again before Firefox will autosync.
    This also happens in the simplest of WebHelp projects with just two
    books.
    Attempts to fix problem: I have made all the changes to files
    suggested on the forums and Peter Grainge's (excellent) site. My
    default topic is not within a book and is at the top of the TOC.
    None of my books are linked to topics. Adobe's official line is "no
    issues with Firefox", so they don't know of this problem. I did not
    have this problem when using RoboHelp 6.
    I need to know if I am alone in experiencing this problem -
    if so there is obviously something wrong with my setup, so I will

  • Faded links in Toc

    W7, ID CS6, DW CS6
    When I convert an ePub created in ID CS6 to Kindle using Kindlegen the html toc is very faded (light blue), despite being fine in the ePub. I tried reworking the CSS in DW to increase the font weight of the toc entries to bold. This helped a little but the resulting mobi file was still unpleasantly light regardless of the fact that the ePub was now unpleasantly heavy. Do I just have to live with this or am I missing something? An example of the adjusted codes follow.

    Is there any way to determine if a link is a book mark or hyperlink in java script
    Sub Problem:
    I am making an array of quads of all the hyperlinks in a document. I would like to automatically skip over all the bookmarks in the starting pages of a document and just get the links of the hyperlinks.
    Now I have to manually set the pages that contain bookmarks so they are not included in the array.
    Is there any way to determine if a link is a book mark or hyperlink in java script?
    It would help automate the conversion I need below

    Main Problem:
    I have been working on converting a set of pdf files with 1000’s of hyperlinks like www.site.com\folder1\file1.pdf#page=10
    To jump to a local copy of the files with a relative type link
    ../folder1/file1.pdf and then go to the proper page.
    I have found that it can be done manually by changing the hyperlink to a javascript
    var otherDoc = app.openDoc('../folder1/file1.pdf', this);otherDoc.pageNum = 10 - 1;
    and setting each destination file with a disclose()=true;

    I have resorted to the following plan using acrobat javascript, an external keyboard macro recorder and excel in combination to get around the problem
    Four folder level acrobat javascripts with “buttons”
    One to get all the link quads in an array, in the pdf and report the total number
    The second creates a form field in the far corner of the first page and moves there.
    The third jumps to each link found by creating a form field just to the left of the link and zooms in so it can be selected by a “mouse click” from the keyboard macro recorder 
    The forth deletes the form field
    The keyboard macro recorder runs javascript 2 and then 3 then clicks on the link just to the right of the middle of the screen and uses keys to get to the advanced editing to get to edit the hyperlink .
    The hyperlink is then copied to excel where it is converted using string functions to the needed javascript text to be copied back.
    To the acrobat file into a java script (after deleting the hyperlink)
    Rinse/lather/repeat
    I have been able to convert about 150 links an hour.
    Better then hand typing, but not like having java access to the links.
    I am looking to improve the solution

    I may have been confusing a "acrobat bookmark" and a bookmark in a word file that is converted to a pdf and ends up being a
    link of the type:
    "Go to a page in this document"
    which I do not want in my array vs
    a link of the action type:
    "Open a web link"

  • Help with Links to my book/publisher page from ibook to ibookstore

    My question : What is the correct way to get links to specific ibooks and publisher pages and on the iBookstore - as I have had trouble with mine.
    Many of the iBooks and ePubs samples (Dorling Kindersly for example) that I've downloaded from the iBookstore have a button at the back which takes you to the page for the book itself where you can purchase the complete book.
    Similarly on the books themselves they have links to their publisher pages.
    • Firstly, I can't work out how to link to a book which hasn't been published yet - So at the back of my samples I put a button next which links to my 'Publishers Page' (see below)
    • Secondly, I can't work out how to make a proper publisher page  - if there is such a thing - the only way I've managed is to add the publishers name as an 'Author' to the book itest, searching for the authour in linkmaker, then linking to that page:

    The main issue is that on my clients (newer) ipad some of the links behave differently... some only take to search page.
    What I am currently doing:
    • Finding the links by going to http://itunes.apple.com/linkmaker/ then searching for the name of my publisher, where I get to link to the 'artists page' then as all my publications will list the publisher as an Author, when in the new sample they visit this link it should take them to the page with all our publications on, including the one that they have just downloaded a sample of.

    Apple has recently introduced 'short links'. That document requires a developer account to access, but this may be of interest:
    there is a known issue (r.7414684) where itunes.apple.com links to your company's page do not open the App Store from within your app, giving an error instead; these links include "viewArtist" or "/artist/" in the URL, for example,

  • Greek Fonts for TOC Book and Topic Titles

    Good Morning.
    I Create o project using RoboHelp for HTML.
    I rename TOC book and topic titles using greek fonts.
    If i generate the project using Webhelp as layout with
    Section 508 Compliant Output everything is ok at runtime but if i
    use Skin TOC book and topic titles display wrong fonts on runtime.
    I'd like to know if there is solution for this problem.

    What Colum proposed is the standard answer we have been giving for years and presently it's likely the best approach.
    However, Adobe does listen to their customers. And I've seen this particular issue cropping up time and again through the years. So I'm going to suggest to you that you and everyone else wanting to see some changes here consider submitting a Wish Form to ask for a new capability. Ask Adobe to devise a way to allow the user to print in the manner you are seeking.
