Linking video tracks?

I'm sorry if this is asked before, but I can't think of how to describe it in a way I can google it.
In Premiere (I have access to CS3 and 4) I want to somehow link two video tracks together so that the lower track has a default still image which makes it into the rendering if and only if there is nothing in the upper track.
As an example, say you have a pair of eyes that is normally open as the default on the lower track, and every so often you want them to blink. Problem is, the shape of the eyes on each track isn't quite the same so part of the lower image would show through unless it's not rendered. There has to be a simpler/faster/more reliable way of doing this than having to manually making a hole in the lower track every time you want a blink, and manually close it if you move the blink somewhere else.

im not sure I understand, but it sounds like you can make a mask and do that and apply the mask only on the frames you want by cutting the clip when you want to apply the mask to the first frame of that section and cut again when you want the mask to end...
in other words the mask would only be applied when you want..not the entire track...or vica versa...can you post a screenshot of what you have now ..maybe I could understand better then what you mean to do...  I kinda got lost thinking of all these floating eyeballs blinking and stuff...

  • Extra, linked, video track I didn't add

The image shows two Video tracks, Video 2 appeared at some point early on; I didn't notice it's arrival and I have no idea how or  why it got there. It seems to be linked to Video 1 because I can't select them separately; in order to deleted Video 2.  Also Video 2 has no audio track.

I still think you've accidentally applied the Effects Mask, from the right-click menu.
    Steve,
I agree with you. When an Effects Mask is applied, there WILL be what appears to be a duplicate of the Video, placed on a higher Video Track, and linked to the original Video Track. It is about the same, as with the Track Matte Keying, and contains the Mask. With Track Matte Keying, one would Duplicate the Clip to the Video Track above, then create and add the Matte, above that, linking, as needed. With Effects Mask, all the handwork is done automatically, and that "duplicate" has the Mask.
Can definitely be a tad confusing, the first time that one encounters it - unless they have read your book!

  • Restoring stereo audio track link to video track as source/destination

I've read everything I can find relevant in discussions & manuals but can't figure out how to get my two audio tracks (stereo) linked back to video track as destinations, as they once were, with video and audio source/destination tabs joined. In the patch panel (when I started this morning) I noticed that only A1 destination button had an a1 source. There was no a2 Source button to join to A2 Destination.
In my groping around I managed to also make the a1 source button dissapear as well. Link and Stereo Pair are checked in the Modify menu. Linked Selection button is on in Timeline.
What the heck am I doing wrong here and how do I get those Source buttons to reappear? Thanks for whatever advice you guys can give.
    - Frazzled Idiot

"how do I get those Source buttons to reappear?"
The vn and an source tabs appear and disappear in the timeline depending on the clip in the viewer: if it is only video, there is only v1, if it is only stereo audio you have a1 and a2, if you have a standard clip audio + video you have v1, a1 and a2, and so on. Just depends on the clip in the viewer.
If you had only a1 source, it means that you probably had your clip unlinked, your stereo pair unlinked and you loaded only one of the 2 stereo tracks to the viewer. If you want to edit them back together select the video and 2 audio tracks in the timeline and cmd-L (link video to audio) and opt-L (link stereo pair).
After that when you load the clip in the viewer you'l have again v1, a1 and a2 source buttons ready to use.

  • Audio and Video tracks don't go up/down together EVEN when linked selection is checked!

I'm sure this is something really simple but I just can't figure it out. And it must be a button or a option that I've checked because it didn't use to do that a few days ago.
Basically, I have a clip on the timeline which has a video and an audio track. I want to move the video clip up to the next video track but I want the audio to move down to the next audio track too. Right now it's not doing that. Only the video file moves up to the next track and the audio clip remains in the same track. How do I fix that so that however many tracks I move the video up by the audio goes down by that same number of tracks?

Not sure how other NLES manage it but I think it would be a pain if audio  automatically followed video in this respect.  eg Blocked layers b'cos something is already there.
FCP &, and earlier behaved that way. I prefer the way Premiere Pro does it. You often do not need to move the audio to a different track when you move video to another track. I want to control the placement of audio and video separately now.
    Thanks,

  • How do I get the audio track to stick with the video track?

Whenever I move or cut the video track I want it's audio track to move or cut with it, how do I get them to stay together so I don't have to do double work?
This should be an easy one...Let's see who can answer first.....ready, set, GO!

Sounds like Linked Selection is switched off. Check the button in the upper right of the timeline window. Shift-L will toggle it off and on.

  • How to link 3 tracks or more ?

    Hi there,
    I have a new problem.
I used 2 different camcorder to film the same scene but each from different angle. I also record the voice separately.
I placed the 2 videos on V1 and V2 and the sound on A1 and A2.
I managed to sync the video V1 and video V2 with the sound A1 and A2. To to make sure they are at the correct location, I want to link all of them up
    But I cannot linked all these 3 tracks [V1, V2 and (A1 & A2)] together. I can only link either V1 with (A1 & A2) or V2 with (A1 & V2).
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks

Why do you need to link them? They won't move out of place unless YOU move them.

    Thanks David,
I need to link them because I am worried I might move them accidentally. After all the hardwork of synching the audio & video, the last thing I want is to move the track ...
Is there no way to link 3 tracks ?
    Thanks

  • Mkv with multiple video tracks

Hi. I have a load of Matroska files which contain a few (about 5) short video clips and an audio track. The video clips in each file are of the same event from different angles, so I want to watch all clips simultaneously. I have installed Perian and while the files open, I can only see one track, and I don't hear any audio. (MKVinfo tells me there are definitely multiple tracks.) Is it possible to use Perian/QuickTime to watch all video tracks simultaneously? If so, I can't figure out how, so I'd appreciate any pointers.
I've tried VLC, and while this also opens the files (and shows all tracks), it invariably crashes soon after opening.
If anyone has any other suggestions how I might solve this, that would be great too.
    Thanks in advance,
    wrathkeg

It could be a 'difficult' form of Matroska file. FYI Matroska is just a container like MOV or AVI, and some mkv have the video encoded with Real Video Codec (RV9 RV10). Perian+QT can't decode this, but VLC will play .mkv files just fine on OS X, as long as they don't use H.264!
It's a bit of a lottery until Matroska decide to support the Apple platform. I have found this:
    http://mkv4mac.free.fr/index.php?lang=en&p=lec
    which may help.
But there may be another workaround: 1. Get Info the mkv file
    2. Change to extension to wmv. Save as wmv and that could work better.
Or this link may be helpful:
    http://www.squidoo.com/mkv-converter-mac
Recently, a poster (ZachP14) suggested this:
"There's a program called Plex that runs .mkv files awesome on my 2.0 ghz macbook."

    Maybe worth a try?

  • Alternate video tracks not visible

I have video files that occasionally display very different content to the primary video content, especially the first time they're played. The video stream with start to disintegrate and for a few seconds something completely different is viewable. It's also not easily repeated. Its not like pristine video content suddenly appears. The main content becomes visually corrupt or fragmented, pixilated, smeared, etc and alternate content becomes visible for brief periods.
What can I do to separate or remove the primary video track enabling the covered tracks to be visible?
I'm viewing these video files with vlc and premiere pro in a Windows 7 environment, but not skilled enough to devise a procedure to expose the underlying content.
Answering questions is not a problem.
Thanks for any suggestions or links to relevant material.

If you are willing to try anything, how about importing the file into AE?
I'm guessing the encoding is corrupt or non-standard since you are seeing the same problem in several programs.
How to get the correct frames? Well, if you are seeing different frames each time you play through it, you may have to do a manual save of each frame and then try to put them in the correct order.
I'd try to open the file in several other video programs and see if it works in any of them. Have you tried Handbrake, for example?

  • Button on video track via subtitles work but not for audio via story

    Hello,
I have a video track with two different audio (two versions of music). I have created two buttons within a subtitle to have them directly on the video
if i make a link to the menu, the button work correctly. But in fact i make a link to two different stories, each with the different audio track
this way it does not work ..
    any idea ?

    Hey Thierry Arnould,
    You could use scripts.
Create 2 scripts each with the function "Set System Stream"
and select the "audio streams" which you want to use.
Then add as Startscript to the corresponding story.
    hope that helps

  • Multiple Video Tracks - Selectable

I cant for the life of me figure out how to put more than one video angle within one quicktime file and make it user friendly.
I want to create a file similar to a DVD with selectable video angles. I can get my files combined and in the movie properties turn the video tracks on and off. But how would I develop a file that a user could easily turn on and off the different video streams dependent on what they want to watch without having to open up the movie properties?
    So in summary:
    V1
    V2
    V3
    V4
The user decides while watching which angle they want.
    Thanks much in advance.

That's a good example and helps showcase LiveStage software but there are other issues.
Notice the example uses true "streaming" media. These files can be started from any location in the file as soon as the stream is connected.
A QuickTime user that wanted "multiple angles" (different video tracks) would only need a method of selecting a different part of the streaming file. These extra parts could be put at the "end" of the file and then simple "Chapters" tracks could link to them.
Since a true streaming file can jump to any point in the file a click on a new chapter could bet set to a different part of the stream. The same can be done with "local" files but Web based files would be difficult because of these extra tracks. The file size would balloon so large that viewing would be a real bother until the entire file has downloaded.
A local file could "react" a bit faster and would be a better distribution method. The same "chapter track" method could link to the other parts of the file.
QuickTime files can have up to 99 tracks and in, addition to chapters, can also be "linked" via the Languages menu (Alternate track in the Movie Properties window to set them).
QuickTime files can also allow parts of the file be "pre-loaded". This could help the Web based version but you would need very patient viewers.
QTVR files can also have "hotspots" that could, in theory, point to other non QTVR files. You could make a "Stage" using QTVR and set the "angles" as links to regular QuickTime movies.
Very complicated and I don't have the time or software to test any of these methods.

  • How to make the audio track independent from the video track?

Can someone remind me how to make the audio track independent from the video track? My memory just went blank. Must be the age.

  • URGENT! Button on a video track

Hi, I have a client who is interested in my idea of having a button on the video track with which, when it appears, you press enter and it plays a different video track. It acts just like a menu button but appears at a certain point whilst playing a video.
I did this during my degree with great ease in DVD Studio Pro using the subtitle tracks but the company I now work for used Encore CS2 and I can't find anything anywhere which will allow me to do what, really is quite a simple request for an 'industry standard' DVD authoring programme.
Please help as this is urgent! Are we going to have to purchase DVD studio pro as well!?
    Thank you,
    Tracey

You could just set up a menu, with a video background (your video) and then have the loop point setup so that when your button should appear, it does (since this is technically a menu now, should be no problem).
When you get to the point you want the button to go off screen again (if that is the case), just create a new menu or timeline as the out point of the menu (make sure menu is not set for looping) and link to that one.
Crazy crazy workaround, I know...but maybe it'll work for you and you won't need to go buy another program. This is, unfortunately, a weak section for Encore.

  • How to isolate one audio or video track?

How to isolate one audio or video track? My premiere pro cc will only allow me to grab all 8 audio tracks and the video tracks at once when i import it and bring them into the timeline. When I click on one it highlights them all.

It helps to indicate what version of Premiere you have and whether you're on Mac or Windows.
If you're on 7.0.1 or later, then disable the Linked Selection button in the Timeline. It's the button to the right of the magnet (Snap). If you frequently want to toggle between linked and unlinked selection, you can assign a shortcut to the command
Also, you can select any track item by holding ALT while clicking. To select multiple individual track items (e.g., A3, A5, & A7 for a given clip), hold ALT+SHIFT while clicking.
And I believe Sarthak meant "Unlink" rather than "Ungroup." A/V clips are linked by default, so Unlink is generally available. Ungroup will be available only if what's selected is a set of clips that you manually grouped.

  • How do you keep audio tracks connected to a video track?

I mostly keep the audio and video of captured clip together, in synch. When I put a clip on the timeline, the audio tracks become disconnected from the video track. This is happening regularly and I can't get on with the edit. Every time I move a clip, the audio gets separated from the video. I think something is wrong with my setup. How can I set the project up so that the audio tracks stay with the video track until I unlock them?

I am running into another effect which I don't understand.
I select the video of a clip in the timeline. Then I shift click the stereo audio. This connects the audio and video (which I never separated in the first place). Then when I move the video+audio clip, the clip is copied, which I do not want. I must have turned on something that I don't want. Maybe this has something to do with my linking problem. Shift L did not solve the problem yet, but I need to experiment with it more.
