Linking vs. embedding image files

Hi all,
How does Illustrator handle placed and linked image files? I created a document that has some very simple vector art on top of a placed image. The image is placed and linked, not embedded. The Illy file is 41mb, and the image is 50mb. If the image is linked, why is the Illy file so dang big? I could understand the file being large if the image is embedded...
(and Why isn't this type of file handling similar to InDe?)
Just looking for some insight.
Thanks, Dina

You could save as a Low-res PDF with Illustrator Editing Capability enabled. This file would be similar to a default Illustrator file, except that you can control the quality of the embedded PDF. The biggest drawback to this is the files will be PDFs instead of AIs and double-clicking will open them in Perview or Acrobat unless you change the default app for PDF files, which you probably don’t want to do. You would then need to manually open the files in Illustrator by dragging to the dock or using File > Open from Illustrator. Also, since hte files are PDFs, it would not be immediadely obvious to other users that these are actually fully editable Illustrator files. I think this is too high a price to pay for a Finder preview.

  • Extracting an embedded image file

    I'm hoping that someone can confirm this:
    If I have an embedded image file in InDesign, and I don't have the original image file -- is it possible to un-embed the image file without loosing any of the original quality of the file? I tried choosing Unembed from the Links panel menu. Is that a good way to unembed without loss?

    It's the only way.

  • Illustrator hangs when saving .ai files with linked or embedded images

    Hi,
    Currently I have a huge problem with Adobe Illustrator. When I place an image file inside an Illustrator document, the program freezes for about 45 seconds when saving. In the beginning I though it was just because my image file was too big, but that wasn't the case.
    To test what's going on I created a new document, drew a few lines and saved. No problem, Illustrator saved immediately. Then I placed a bigger image and suddenly Illustrator hang when saving. I repeated this with a very small GIF of just a few kB and again, Illustrator hang for nearly a minute when saving the image. I tried embedding the image instead of linking it, but I still got the same results.
    Then I turned of the visibility of the image object by clicking on the little eye symbol in front of the image object and suddenly Illustrator was able to save quickly again. The next thing I wanted to try was turning off compression and PDF compatibility, but then I noticed that Illustrator is actually hanging BEFORE writing the file to disk. When I hit "Save as" Illustrator asked me where to save the new file and then after clicking "Save" it hang (showing "(Not Responding)" in the title bar). About 45 seconds later the save options dialog came up and when I clicked "OK" it saved the file immediately.
    Does anybody know what the problem might be? I'm using Illustrator CS5 on Windows 7 x64. The computer is a notebook with 8GB RAM and a switchable graphics card. I tried this on both the integrated Intel graphics unit and on the much more powerful AMD chip. The hard driver I'm saving to is the local hard drive (no network drive etc.).
    This is a more or less fresh installation (I haven't used Illustrator before on this notebook) and I can't remember that I had the same problem on my workstation where I used it inside a virtual machine (which doesn't exist anymore).

    Yeah, I know that changing the mode results in different colors. I just switched back and forth to check out what's going on.
    For CMYK I'm using ECI profiles which are common in Europe and for RGB the normal Adobe RGB 1998 profile. The profiles are synced between all Creative Suite products. I tried sRGB and some of the default profiles which shipped with CS5 but it produces the same result. I also deleted my whole Illustrator profile but without success.
    My graphics card doesn't have any updates. But it would be very unlikely anyway that both drivers for both cards had the same issue. If it has something to do with my graphics cards it's more likely the switchable graphics in general.

  • How can I insert a link to an image file into numbers

    I wish to include access to images in a numbers spreadsheet without actually inserting the images. Doing this where the image is a web page is not difficult but these images are on my local drive. I tried dropping an image file onto Safari ( the image opens as a page in Safari) and then copying the URL ( it has the form:  file:///Users/JTC_49/Documents/Pictures/IMG_0248.JPG )  and using it to create a link ( Format>Add a Link>paste the URL into the 'link' field). That all seems to work but when you click on the link you get a message " Couldnt Open Link ". A web page link would open a browser and display the linked page. This does not appear to try to open a browser to pass the URL.
    MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.3), Numbers 3.2

    Open the parent file. Go to Tools> Advanced Editing> Link tool. Then draw an area in the parent file with the link tool to open the new file. You will get the Create link dialog box. Under Link action, select "Open a file" and click on next. Select the file to open and click on Select button. You will get the "Specify Open Preference Window".  Select  "New Window"  and Click on OK. Save the file and re-open it. This time the new file will open in a new window keeping the parent file.

  • Links to embedded pdf files not working in iOS reader

    I have created a pdf document that links to a variety of embedded pdf files.
    When I open this file in the iOS reader on my iPad 3, the links are not active. All of the embedded files are listed in the attachments list, but the links themselves do not launch the attachments.
    Please help!
    Thank you

    We only support internal and http links in the current reader,not including links to attachments. However, PDF attachments should be open-able using the attachments button (bottom right). It should also work for password protected documents. If it does not, please share a sample file with us at [email protected] so we can investigate.
    Thanks!

  • Embedded image file?

    I was too optimistic... but still no sign of being able to email an image file as attachment! This is what receivers see!!!

    Because for the most part, the user can configure the email client to do what they want. No way to guess at what that particular recipient has decided.
    I’m not sure why I’d care how someone decides to view their email. I don’t want anybody forcing me to view their emails the way they want me to see them.
    I just want plain text. I just want to read the message, not see 29 different fonts and colors with bold and italic and all the other crap.

  • Disable link in embedded .swf file?

    Hi, all,
    I have embedded a flash .swf file in a topic, and it plays
    just fine in WebHelp output.
    The .swf was made as a banner in another application, where
    the user clicks on the image to bring up a new window with its own
    content. That link must be embedded in the .swf, because the html
    code in RH just puts it there and lets it run.
    I'm planning to insert a note to explain the dead link,
    saying my presentation is only to show the swf. As it stands, it
    displays a hand pointer, but a click generates a js error.
    Is there a way to disable the link from the swf without going
    back to the original developer?
    Thanks.
    Harvey

    Hi Harvey
    You said you omitted the JavaScript? Why? Was it causing
    issues? Or is it the fact the link points somewhere you really
    don't want it to?
    If so, I'm thinking you could amend the JavaScript
    to point it where you want.
    Just thinking out loud... Rick

  • In Design CS 5.5, Can I link to large image files ??

    Dear friends,
    We are creating a 111 page file that links to about 120 large picture files.  Each picture file is about 40MB.  Doing this seems like it will slow down my computer's ability to quickly edit the file, because it will be so large.
    QUESTION: What are some ways around this?
    What is recommended?
    Shall I place the files, and then somehow TURN DOWN the "display performance" ?
    Or should I make SMALLER versions of all 120 files, then replace them with the large files when I am about to print to PDF?  (That sounds like a LOT of work)

    I'm not sure you are using the term "embedding" properly here.
    You want to link the images by using File > Place... That includes a pointer to the entire file and a preview inthe ID file, but not the actual image data. In order to embed (which saves a complete copy of the image data inside the ID file and will make it HUGE), you must slect the link in the Links panel and choose Embed from the panel flyout menu.
    It's also possible to copy and paste vector drawings into ID and the will not show in the links panel at all. I recommend against this in favor of Placing them as well. Complex pasted vector objects can cause significant slowdown whenver the screen has to be redrawn.

  • Mailto link from embedded image

    Hello, I have to use a graphical signature for outgoing company emails and wish to have the graphic linked to a mailto: tag. I tried inserting the code in Mail's signature preferences, but the HTML tag shows up in the email, not a hyperlink. Can anyone tell me how to do this ? I am using 10.4

    start composing a new message and insert the image there. add a mailto link to it using edit menu->link->add. then copy the whole thing and paste it into the signature creation window.

  • What is the proper method for embedding image files in a documentDB model?

    I'm working on some standard CMS functionality to produce simple service articles for a website. I'm looking at two possible options but I'm not sure which way to go.
    Example 1:
    I really want to create a value object to represent the image such as
    class ImageFile
    public byte[] fileData { get; set;}
    public string contentType { get; set;}
    class WebArticle
    public ImageFile {get; set}
    public string someContent { get; set; }
    Or am I stuck with storing the image seperately w/ Azure Storage and just simply using my documentDB object to reference it's url via something like this:
    class WebArticle
    public string imageUrl { get; set; }
    public string someContent { get; set; }
    I see that there is some way to add "Attachments" but I'm not really clear on what the attachments are for. I don't think that I am reading the correct documentation. Is there a webpage out there that clarifies this. A kindle book on Amazon maybe?
    I'm looking forward to using this new technology. Ryan's Channel 9 presentation on the subject really caught my attention.
    Thank,

    There are tons of informations missing here, for instance (but not limited to) the exact forms version you are using (note: 10g is not a version, but 10.1.2.0.2 is). Without Version informations a correct answer is not possible
    You might want to go through the links from the Announcement entitled "<a href=http://forums.oracle.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=432>Before posting on this forum please read </a>" which contains links to the documentation and instructions on how to post proper questions for example.

  • Mail problem with embedded images and links

    Since Yosemite Apple Mail seems to have a problem with images that are used as a hyperlink to a website.
    While links are clickable with external loaded images work fine, links with embedded images just do not anything. Clicking on them selects them, a double-click opens the image in Preview.
    This works:
    <a href="https://www.google.de"><img src="https://www.google.de/images/srpr/logo11w.png" alt="Google Logo"></a>
    This does not work:
    <a href="https://www.google.de"><img src="cid:logo_google" alt="Google Logo"></a>
    Can you reproduce this problem?
    We tried it with OS X 10.10.1 and 10.10.2

    After a bit of digging around I think I have found the reason for the EO being called prior to the CO. In the parent page CO, there is a transaction commit (oapagecontext.getApplicationModule(oawebbean).getTransaction().commit();).
    Therefore, I assume that as my custom AM is a child of standard AM where the transaction is being commit, the child AM is sharing the same transaction/session and hence the EO being called.
    I am running into issues with moving the validation to the EO as the validation requires visibility of the VO values to calculate a total value. Therefore is there a way to ensure that my custom AM maintains a separate database session/transaction to the parent/standard AM? Is it possible to break the parent/child relationship?
    This way I assume that the commit issued by the parent page CO will not affect my custom AM/EO.
    Cheers.
    Jon.

  • Uploaded image files not displayed correctly

    Hello everyone,
    I used the following article(on o'reilly) as reference for file upload:
    http://www.onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2001/04/05/upload.html?page=1
    While it works fine for most files types, there are problems with image files.(I am using PrintStream, BufferedOutputStream,FileOutputStream to write the files on the server).
    When links to these image files are clicked, the uploaded gif and jpeg image files are not displayed correctly.When directly opening the files on the server, it gives a 'error opening file' message.But other word docs , text files do not give an error.
    If anyone else has come across the same problem and could help out , I would appreciate it.
    Thanks in advance.

    I do not want to enter into the logic which you are following to upload the file. I did the upload process successfully even as a blob datatype.
    For this I followed the logic given in http://www.java.isavvix.com/codeexchange/codeexchange-viewdetail.jsp?id=22.
    Here you can download the complete sourse code, which is working fine for gif and jpeg, I tested.
    Please go with this. Also let me know, if you still have problem.
    Regards.

  • Help (LR3)! Catalog missing all image files

    In LR3 (using Windows 7):
    Suddenly, none of my image files are linked to the catalog; 14,000+ of them. The catalog is on an external hard drive, backed up on my internal hard drive. The catalog seems intact. The most recent image files are on my internal hard drive, but most are on an external hard drive. All drives are connected and I can navigate to any file that I want. But the catalog can't find the files, even though nothing has moved. When I click 'find missing files,' 14,000+ question-marked previews appear. None are linked to the image files.
    Additionally, when I 'locate' a group of missing files on the proper drive, through the Library module, then suddenly those images vanish from the previews and the number of images in the catalog (the number in parentheses) is diminished by that number. I'm at a complete loss.
    Background: I hadn't used LR for a few days. I recently installed Google Earth and apparently along with it a number of other applications that I didn't want. So I went to my Administrator tools and 'restored' my system to a previous state, from just three days ago. I've 'restored' before with no ill effects. It was after that, when I opened LR, the catalog/image disconnect was apparent. I don't know if that disconnect existed prior to my 'Restore' or if it might have been triggered by it.
    Any ideas?

    It turns out that -- somehow -- the letter assigned to the external hard drive got changed. Once I changed it back (as Administrator), all was well with the world again. (Just needed to do a little extra housekeeping.)
    Aside: How the heck does something like that happen, that a drive changes letters?

  • Maintain Linked Graphics in document files

    I would like to use SharePoint to maintain version control on documents that retain linked graphics.  Does SharePoint have a means to maintain the linking of image files in these type of publications?  Is there a workflow that we can use for
    this purpose?  I'd like to use SharePoint as our main version control application if it has the linking capability.

    Hi,
    According to your description, my understanding is that you want to maintain the linking to the image files after you update the documents with graphics linking to SharePoint library.
    Per my knowledge, when you add graphic linking in Word, it causes Word to create an active link between the graphic in your document and the original graphic file. After you upload the document to SharePoint library, if other users view the document in other
    machine, it may not find the path, which fails to display the image.
    As a workaround, you could insert the graphic file to your document, which displays fine in SharePoint library.
