Links Absolute to Disk Error

Hi:
I'm doing a site redesign and am moving content from old pages to new pages. All the pages are based on a template. I'm having to remove some formatting from the content, such as classes that have now changed, and then I paste the content into a new page. No problems, except that periodically I'll finish a new page, do a "save as", close it and it will generate an icon and message in the errors tab: Links Absolute to Disk. I go through and try to locate any funky links or anything else but don't find anything. A couple of times I've simply re-done the page - opened the template, moved all the content from the page I've just built to the template again, saved, and it's fine. But I've got almost 200 pages to do so I don't want to have to keep doing this. My Help doesn't address this error either.
Anyone know what this message means? And what to do about it?
I'm using  GoLive CS2 on Mac Tiger 10.4.11
Thanks!

In case anyone runs into this problem in the future - what was happening was that, at least when I do this, when I build a template, the template's links are all "absolute" - they'll be long addresses that link all the way down to my desktop folder. But as soon as I "save" the page, the links change to relative links. I'd never noticed before, but I saw this happen by having a template page open in sourceview when I saved it and saw all the links change. But for whatever reason, this change wasn't occurring. They were remaining absolute after saving.
I found, in a GoLive Tips & Tricks, to use the Outline Editor to locate link problems. Very helpful and something I'd just not used previously. I would open a page in Outline and click the "link help tool"  and  every link - to other pages, to graphics, anchors, etc. were shown as being broken.
I tried going through and redoing all the links but they wouldn't change from absolute to relative. So next I tried going into the source code and deleting all the extra code (say, the link was: <img src="../../web-content/graphics/swish.gif"> I'd turn it into: <img src="graphics/swish.gif"> and I would do that to all the links on the page, but the error would still show up in the errors tab.
In the end, what I did was, I started to open a template page to "create a new page" and I would Name it and add the "h1" headline and a graphic and then I would save it. I would close it, reopen and finish the page and everything was fine. I had been completing the entire page before saving.
That did the trick.

  • Links absolute to disk?

What does this error message mean? It shows a symbol of a golden broken link.

It is something else. I still don't know why it happens. But when it does I can get rid of it by opening the in and out links palette at the top of the page and then linking the broken golden link to the CSSriptLib.js file in the generateditems folder.
Do you know why this happens intermittently?
Also, do you know how to get a print page button and a send page button going?
    Best,
    Allan

  • No Disk Error for Adobe Premiere Elements 12

I installed Adobe Premiere Elements 12 to my PC. Everytime I load the software, I get this annoying alert saying that there is no disk located error. I can get it to go away if I click on try again a bunch of times, but I want to get rid of this problem. It should NOT be happening. SOME BODY TELL ME WHAT TO DO PLEEAASE!

Please check out recent thread which sought to solve the disc error message that appears to be similar to what you are reporting
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/6246049#6246049
There was no definitive answer. Still waiting for follow up to the latest line of questions in that thread.
Suggestions about this being a long time issue are a bit misleading. In versions of Premiere Elements earlier than 12, there was a SmartSound/Sonicfire Pro 5  feature which appeared to be linked to the disc error message. And, updating SmartSound/Sonicfire Pro 5 was claimed to be the cause and remedy for the disc error message.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1300410
However, SmartSound/Sonicfire Pro 5 is no longer a feature in Premiere Elements 12. Premiere Elements 12 does have a Music Score feature, similar in principle to SmartSound soundtracks, but the SmartSound feature is gone in version 12.
Please review that information in the link above and let us know if any of it works for you.
    Thank you.

  • "No Disk" Error (premiere elements 11)

I have successfully installed Adobe Premiere Elements 11 on my PC:
         Dell XPS 8300
Intel Core i7-2600 Quad Core (3.4 GHz, 8MB Cache)
         • 1GB Radeon HD 6450 Graphics
         • 16GB DDR3 1333 RAM
         • 1TB 7,200RPM Hard Drive (2 x 500GB RAID 0)
         • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
When I open the application and click "New Project" I get the following error message:
    AdobePremiereElements.exe - No Disk
There is no disk in the drive.  Please insert a disk into drive
         \Devices\harddisk2\DR3
I can "cancel", "try again", or "continue".  The only thing that works is to hit "cancel"  (several times).  Premiere Elements will then open, but the error message will keep recurring.   Adobe Support (Chat) has not been much help.
Anyone else come across this?  This seems to be a common error in earlier versions (version 9), but I can't seem to find any good solution to it.   HELP!!!!
UPDATE:   Just as an FYI..while it's possible (but doubtful) there is preloaded software interfering, there is no other software (or viruses) installed on this computer.

  • In Flash Builder: "No Disk" Error when trying to switch to Design View

Just had Flash Builder Beta 1 uninstalled and Beta 2 installed instead.
When I try to switch to Design View or open a link from Start Page in Flash Builder Beta 2, the application  freezes and "No Disk" error message pops up.

You have some other problem with your boot drive that has corrupted data backed up to the TimeMacine drive.
My advice is to boot into each operating system and manually backup just your Users files each to separate regular external drives (no Timemachine or backup software) and disconnect.
Make a note of any serial numbers, emails, address book contacts, export bookmarks etc. that isn't typically in your users folders data.
You might be able to Winclone 3 the Windows as a whole thing as it's appearing not to have issues but it's your MacintoshHD partition that is so that will have to be rebuilt from scratch.
    Most commonly used backup methods
If your OS X parititon doesn't boot, you can use this to recover files.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Without any further detail about your machine I can't advise specifically what to do, but it involves using Disk Utility to Zero Erase (move slider one spot to the right or in 10.6 using Security Option) the ENTIRE boot drive and reformatting, then installing OSX fresh and then setting up BootCamp again.
If you wish to switch your boot drive for something better, this is a good time to do this.
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
If your machine is capable of Internet Recovery, then use that, then upgrade.
If your machine came with 10.6 or earlier, then use the 10.6 install disks and work up from there.
Erase, formatting, OS X installs on Mac's

  • Disk error?

Ok. So I had a high end Macbook Pro 15" Early 2011 that came with Lion and I had upgraded to Mountain Lion. I started having 5 min boot ups a(and still do)

Today I decided to boot in Verbose. It got just past where it checks your usb itouch and then i saw so many "failed" and "error"
Heres the code. I wasn't really sure where the boot up ended, so sorrry.
Sorry its such a long code! Sorry. A lot of errors start at 8:00 PM.
Please tell me 1. what is wrong with the disk (or whatever) and 2. what can i do for it?

  • Disk Error Problem on Imac

    Please can anyone help.
I decided to partition my disk so that I could use both windows XP and mac as Apple says you can, however I have incurred a problem part way through the process.
I created a partition for windows and then inserted my Windows XP disk with SP2(Student Version). I selected the right partition for Windows XP ("C:Partition3<Bootcamp>etc) and it completed two processing screens but now my computer is showing the following message...
Press any key to boot from CD.....
    Disk Error
    Press any key to restart
Sounds simple enough but I have pressed a key...several keys...all keys and nothing happens (I have a wireless keyboard and mouse - is this the problem?). I cannot eject the disk and when I switch the whole computer off and then back on I just get to the same screen and nothing happens. I have tried pressing the mouse key to eject the disk and pressing the C key as someone suggested in a previous reply but nothing changes.
This is a new switch over to mac for me - the computer is only 2 weeks old and so far I have been really happy with my mac. This is my first problem (which says something I suppose). I rang the mac suport number however there is no support available today! (not very supportative!) Is there anyone on this board who may be able to shed some light on this problem. I am happy not to partition my disk any more if it is just going to cause me problems and just stick with mac.

I just spent the weekend dealing with this.
First, the previous poster is correct as to why this is happening. The reason you are having the problem is because Boot Camp Assistant formatted the XP partition as FAT32. It needs to be NTFS. Windows Setup is supposed to ask you how to format the new partition (see page 13 of the Boot Camp manual). If your experience is like mine, Windows Setup never asks that question. It simply goes from you selecting the C: drive (Boot Camp manual page 11) to the installation process (a blue screen yellow bar marking progress as things are copied to the partition).
Here is a link to the manual that I'm referring to if you don't have it already: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/BootCampInstall-Setup.pdf
I do not know why the format step is being skipped in some installs but not in all. Call it an "undocumented feature" (e.g., bug).
Here is how to fix it:
If you are still at the black screen, simply use the power switch to turn off your computer (on the back, round button, bottom left when facing screen, bottom right when facing the back). Hold that switch in for about 5 seconds and the iMac will shut down. Release the switch, wait 10 seconds or so then press it again to start back up.
You should still have the XP CD in the drive. This is what you want. You will get a blue screen with white text in the upper left hand corner that says "Windows Setup." On the bottom of the screen there will be some words telling you this and that is loading. Keep an eye on this. It will slowly list a bunch of things that it is loading. Toward the end, it will say something like "Starting Windows Setup." At this point, press and hold the F10 button. Keep holding it until you get a black screen with white text.
You are now in the Recovery Manager. You will be asked what volume you want. The only choice you should have is 1. This is your new Windows partition, it is not your Mac OS partition. YYou may safely type "1" (without quotes) and press return. Then, the prompt will look like this:
    C:\Windows\
At the prompt, you type "cd.." (without quotes) and press return, the prompt will now look like this:
    C:\
Now, we are going to reformat your windows partition as NTFS. To do so, at the prompt type the following without quotation marks "format c: /fs:ntfs" When typed into the prompt, it will look like this (pay close attention to spacing)
    C:\format c: /fs:ntfs
It will give you a warning and ask if you are sure. Type "y" and press return. It will take some time to format and you will see a percentage counter counting up from 1% to 100%. When it is done, you will be back at the C:\ prompt where you will just type "exit" and press return.
Now, Windows Setup should proceed normally.
I think this is correct from memory. Credit to this Austrian guy over at this link about half way down (named diagonalinho http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6061718) that summarizes the steps as well. Looks like English is not his first language so I didn't understand initially but it worked for me.

  • HP dv4-1225dx "Hard Disk Error" 3F1 on startup with eSATA HDD attached

The whole internet is void of information on this specific error code, so here it is, lo and behold, the ONLY English-language Google result for this error message:
    Hard Disk Error
Please run the Hard Disk Test in System Diagnostics.
    Error code:
    Hard Disk 1 (3F1)
    F2 System Diagnostics
For more information, please visit: (illegible due to colored text)
Specifically, the "Hard Disk 1 (3F1)" part, that's nowhere to be found online. Tons of pages about 3F0, apparently the primary hard disk. No, this is an error regarding the secondary hard disk, attached via eSATA.
Problem is, there's NOTHING wrong with the attached drive, other than this error on startup. No SMART failures. Comes up and works fine in Windows. Scanned 100% OK. It'd be nice if there were a way to bypass this error automatically, but I always have to hit F2, then Esc to abort its forced diagnostic routine.
It's a WD My Book Studio, 750gb, attached via eSATA. Doesn't happen if I leave it unplugged during startup... but SATA is a connection that likes to be present on startup. The system, as in the title, is a dv4-1225dx laptop, running Windows Home Server (Server 2003), but previously running Windows 7 Home Premium. Vista is evil.
It's also my home server, as of about yesterday (when I set it up and started getting this message). The system seems to crash pretty routinely over the past few days and every time it reboots, it hangs at that stupid "Hard Disk Error" message. Not a pretty sight when I'm away from home and want to access something, like my email. Is there a way around this message hanging the system?
edit: Not to mention the world's most buggy fan-control algorithm, worst heatpipe design on the planet, no AHCI mode control, and terrible system management (battery went dead on you at 40%? tough... remove battery to continue using your computer). LOOOOTS of bugs in this terrible BIOS.

Thanks for the link, it helps clarify that there's a difference between "3F1" and "301" - hard disk error and SMART error. In other words, it's reporting a generic "Error", not even that the drive may be/is failing.
In this case, the drive isn't failing, at all. It's a BIOS bug.
I put the drive on an ExpressCard eSATA controller, and it works fine. Unfortunately, since I'm the only one using this sort of configuration and getting this error, I imagine there won't be any work done to fix the bug

  • Photoshop CS3 Disk Error?

Suddenly I can't open Photoshop CS3 or work associated with it - Window message: An unexpected and recoverable problem has occurred because of a disk error. Photoshop will now exit.
    Help!
I'm running Tiger, never had this problem before.
    Linda

I'm on a Mac G5 - I have all my important files on a separate external (Seagate) hard drive. I ran the Disk Utility (clicked Verify Disk) on the Main HD and got this message:
    First Aid Failed
Disk Utility stopped verifying “Main HD” because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    The details section says:
    Verifying volume “Main HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid sibling link
The volume Main HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
        Volume needs repair
I can't click Repair Disk because it isn't highlighted to click. It's only available to click when I select my external (Seagate) drive. Do I have my Main HD locked somewhere?

  • Work stoppage because of scratch disk error.  The torture continues!  Please help!

    Hi, everyone:
    I would greatly appreciate help.
In December, I began receiving the error message Could not initialize Photoshop because the scratch disks are full. I deleted all the large files from my hard drive, and the problem went away.
Now, I am working on a large Photoshop file (i.e., 585,155kb). I am working at 300 ppi for print reproduction, using multiple layers. I am opening each new image to be added to the master document in a separate Photoshop window. I set the resolution of each at 300 ppi, then crop and transfer to its new layer in the master file (using drag and drop). After I crop and transfer, I close the open window of the file I just cropped and transferred. No other programs are running. This seems to be fairly standard stuff.
All was fine (although very slow) until two nights ago. When cropping, I received the error Could not complete your request because the scratch disks are full.
Once again, I researched scratch disk error messages, and I came to the conclusion I had no choice but to increase my RAM. So, I upgraded from 512MB to 2 GIG. (I successfully opened my PC and installed the RAM myself, confirming it on the Properties window. A major success, as the RAM was costly, and difficult to find, so I saved some money and time by installing it myself!)
With great enthusiasm and excitement, I opened the master Photoshop file again and the next image to be set to 300 ppi, cropped, and transferred over to a layer. But, when I tried to crop, I received the SAME sickening message, Could not complete your request because the scratch disks are full.
How can this be? I have four times the RAM I had before, which was costly, and I expected Photoshop to work swift and smooth with this new, more efficient increase in RAM. I am simply bewildered.
I tried changing my Scratch Disks to C: rather than Startup, but then I received the error message You currently have Adobe Photoshops primary Scratch and Windows primary paging file on the same volume, which can result in reduced performance. It is recommended that you set Adobe Photoshops primary Scratch volume to be on a different volume, preferably on a different physical drive.
    More scratch disk torture.
None of this makes any sense, and, while Photoshop error messages are upsetting, they dont explain what you should do. I am not a programmer, and I am totally stumped.
I know that someone somewhere upgraded their RAM and still received a Scratch disk error too, so I hope someone can advise me on what I need to do next. I cannot continue my work and just spent a lot of money on RAM.
    Thank you!

Hi, everyone: Thank you for your help with my problem. I appreciate everyones time and feedback, as well as the openness to help and explain (and further explain) what I do not fully understand. I learned a lot more, as Photoshop always introduces new things to learn and figure out. (One has to be part programmer to make PS work!) I appreciated the clear instructions and simple analogies too (for example, the head vs. suitcase was great).
Good news: The Scratch disk error has subsided for now!
I believe (although I am not certain) that the problem was something very simple after all, and I am embarassed. Only time will tell if this was really the culprit, for, if the Scratch disk error reappears later, it may be something else all together that is lurking in the background.
For now, it seems to have been a problem that Peter K.s advice helped me discover...
Peter's advice was to check the crop settings in the option bar for the common mistake of specifying pixels/cm rather than pixels/inch. My setting was correct (pixels/inch). However, I inadvertently used my pixel width number as inches in the Width setting, causing a MUCH bigger file than intended. When I changed the number, the Scratch disk error disappeared, putting me back in business! Thanks, Peter, for pointing me the direction that eventually revealed the problem.
    Could it be this simple?
I kept working most of the night to test drive, free of the Scratch disk error for now! I hope the good fortune continues.
The lesson for others may be to check simple settings carefully first, before diving into the deep end of Photoshop.
Meanwhile, the new RAM is speeding up Photoshop considerably, so I feel like it was a good investment and will probably help safeguard against further Scratch disk errors, which I have had in the past. Also, Ive taken everyones advice to consider a dedicated, separate HD for Photoshop Scratch disk use. Ill plan that as a future/next investment. However, technical notes say an external HD isnt a good idea, but I dont have capacity for an internal HD, so it will have to be an external one. I would appreciate any words of wisdom here. Also, I still have to research SATA-II drives too (which are new to me) and ascertain if I can utilize one on my system. It may simply be too old for this technology, if it is new?
If interested, I also tried several things:
    (1) Checking the space available on my HD again The pie chart indicated it was approximately half full (there was 46% free space, or 34.38 GB free space). I'll look for more to remove, but it seems reasonable to have 46 percent available, I think.
    (2) Checking the need to DEFRAG The Analyzer said a DEFRAG was not needed, and, indeed, the color chart that plotted the files showed only a thin red line or two (red indicates fragmentation).
    (3) Searching for more TEMP files to delete. I found 750 MB in TEMP files to delete, so, while not a lot, there were some still there. Previously I followed these directions to safely delete temporary Internet files: Ctrl Panel > Internet Options > General > Delete Files > Delete all offline content. But, when I navigated to C:\Windows\Temp, sure enough, I found more. Directly opening C:\Windows\Temp seems to be more effective. (I have done it that way in the past too, but lately I was trying to follow the "safe" way I had stumbled across recently.)
    (4) Checking my Photoshop Memory Allocation, which was already set at 85% (which may be too high, so I may back it down later, but I did not change it for now). I remembered adjusting it some time ago, but I had forgotten by how much!
I also read the links that everyone recommended, as well as numerous other documents I found across the Web. Some introduced still more to learn/understand, of course.
Thank you once again. Ill resurrect or repost if the Scratch disk error haunts me again later, but, for now, a happy ending.

    Hello ValeryWildflowr,
If the computer was working fine before you might just want to try a system restore. This should correct the problem without affecting any of your files.
Here is a link for a system restore.
Let me know if this helps.

Perhaps, since you are under warranty, they may have a boot disk to attempt to run disk utility and see if the problem can be repaired before resorting to reformatting. Disk error may occur because of a number of issues (installed software, crashes, shutdowns, physical movement of the drive while disks spinning, etc.)
In addition you may want to boot in the single user mode to access the FSCK command as follows: The following is from the Apple support site
Mac OS X: How to Start up in Single-User or Verbose Mode
You may use a key combination when starting up the computer to enter single-user mode or verbose mode, either of which can be used for troubleshooting and in software development. This document applies to Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server versions 10.0 and later.
Steps to Enter Single-User or Verbose Mode
    1. Shut down the computer if it is on.
    2. Press the power button to start the computer.
    3. Immediately press and hold the Command (Apple) key and one of the following:
the "s" key for single-user mode.
the "v" key for verbose mode.
    4. To exit single-user mode type: reboot
    5. Press Return.
You have successfully entered single-user or verbose mode when you see white text appear on the screen.
Then you may try to repair as follows using the FSCK
fsck is a command-line utility that may be able to verify and repair a disk. If you can successfully start up in Safe Mode or use Disk Utility while started up from a disc, you don't need to use fsck. However, here are some situations in which fsck may be necessary.
Your Mac OS X disc isn't available.
    Your optical drive isn't available.
You can't start with a Safe Boot.
Tip: If you use a Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) formatted volume, such as with Mac OS X 10.3 or later, you probably won't need to use fsck. If you do use it for any reason, please be aware that benign error messages can appear.
If you're not sure how your volume is formatted and you can't start up from your Mac OS X volume to find out, type the following command in a command-line interface and then press Return: diskutil info /
If you see "File System: Journaled HFS+" returned, you have a Journaled volume.
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
Your computer should start up normally and allow you to log in.
About live verification in Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later
In Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later, you can verify your Mac OS X volume while started from it. This is known as live verification, and can be used in three different ways.
Option 1: Verify your disk using Disk Utility while started from the startup disk. To find out how to do this, see this article. Please note that live verification does not involve any disk repair, so if verification finds something that should be repaired, start up from your Mac OS X Install disc and use Disk Utility as described above in "Try Disk Utility."
Option 2 (advanced): Use the command line and the command-line utility, diskutil.
Start up your computer and log in as an administrator.
    Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities).
At the prompt, type the following command and then press Return:
    diskutil verify /
Note: Don't use this method to check non-startup volumes.
You should see messages such as the following during the disk check:
Could not unmount disk for verification, attempting live verify
Started verify/repair on volume disk0s3 Macintosh HD
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK.
    Mounting Disk
Verify/repair finished on volume disk0s3 Macintosh HD
Option 3 (advanced): Use the command line and the fsck_hfs -l command.
Start up your computer and log in as an administrator.
    Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities).
At the prompt, type the following command and then press Return to determine your filesytem ID:
    df -hl
Look for some lines of text that look like this:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
    /dev/disk0s3 37G 20G 17G 55% /
    /dev/disk0s5 37G 37G 641M 98% /Volumes/Storage
Make a note of the first "disk" name that appears after /dev/, such as "disk0s3." This is your filesystem ID for your startup volume.
At the prompt, type the following command and then press Return:
    df -hl
Then type the following command, where "disk0s3" is your filesystem ID you noted in step 4, then press Return:
    sudo fsck_hfs -l /dev/disk0s3
When prompted, enter your admin password, then press Return to begin the verification.
You should see messages like these during the disk check:
    ** /dev/rdisk0s3 (NO WRITE)
    ** Root file system
    ** Checking HFS Plus volume.
    ** Checking Extents Overflow file.
    ** Checking Catalog file.
    ** Checking multi-linked files.
    ** Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    ** Checking Extended Attributes file.
    ** Checking volume bitmap.
    ** Checking volume information.
** The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK.
    Additional Information
If you're interested in UNIX-style command-line syntax, here's a look at how a couple of flags used in our instruction can influence fsck:
The -y flag: Tells fsck that you want to answer "yes" to all questions about fixing, repairing, or salvaging information. This is the optimal approach, as answering "no" to any question causes fsck to stop. You cannot determine that all necessary repairs have been made until fsck completes and gives its final report.
The -f flag: Forces fsck to check "clean" filesystems when preening.

  • Hard Disk Error Code 301

Can I replace/recover my hard drive after receiving error message "smart disk error 301"?  I have a HP G72-253NR Notebook PC, product # LG583UA. I've received the error message and now when I turn on my system it will not boot up and will automatically go to startup repair. I then get the message that "A hard disk problem is preventing Windows from starting".  This leads me to believe that my hard drive has completely failed.  My notebook is no longer under warranty and I need a quick inexpensive fix. Please help.
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
The 301 Smart error would indicate the drive is failing and needs to be replaced - this is also consistent with the start-up error.
Your notebook is listed as coming with a 640Gb Hard Drive, but considering there's little or no difference in cost, you can just as easily install a 750Gb HDD if you want a bit more space - the drive on the following link is an example that would be fine for your notebook.
    750Gb Hard Drive.
The procedure to replace the Hard Drive starts on Page 50 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.
Once done, simply use your Recovery DVDs to reinstall the Operating System on the new drive - this procedure is described in the HP document Here.
If you don't have your Recovery Discs, you can order a replacement set using the link below.
    Order HP Recovery Discs.
If you have any problem with this link, order them directly from HP.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.

Plug the usb flashdrive into one of the notebooks's usb ports  Press the power button and then immediately tap the Esc key to invoke the startup menu. Choose F9 (boot opions) instead of F10 (BIOS setup) in the startup menu and then select the usb flashdrive.
