Links broken in 10.4/CS2 to CS4 document conversion

We have a bunch of InDesign CS2 documents that are missing links when we open them in CS4.
When we open in CS2, the links work and are up to date.
If we launch CS4 on the same machine, some links are broken.
Using the link panel in CS4 the link looks like this: /Volumes/Server3-3/Path/To/File.jpg (Sometimes it's Server-1, Server-2, Server-3 - think it's a Mac OS X 10.4 bug where volume mount points are renamed?)
Anyone have any ideas on how to update without moving the links to the same folder, or updating manually? We are looking into moving all machines to ID CS4, but this needs to be resolved before we can move forward on this.

About a week ago I discovered that all of the URLs in the help menus and F1 in CS4 apps -- Photshop, Illustrator, Soundbooth -- all lead to dead links at the Adobe website. Is this an artifact of the release of CS5 and will Adobe issue a patch or restore the original help pages?

Dictionary transfer from CS2 to CS4

Hi, all.
I've built up quite a specialized dictionary in CS2. Now, our company is going to CS4. Will my CS2 dictionary transfer over, and if so, how?

Honestly I don't know if the custom dictionary files changed format or anything from CS2 to CS4. When you get CS4, try linking to it from Preferences > Dictionary.
If you're saying though that you're not working with an auxiliary custom dictionary, and instead have added/removed words from your User Dictionary (the default one), then my best guess is you're going to lose those. So, don't uninstall CS2 yet ... boot the program, go to Edit > Spelling > Dictionary, and export the words you see in Added Words. (Maybe also in Removed and Ignored Words). There's an Export button there.
Then when you install CS4, if the dictionary was overwritten, you could always go back to that Dictionary dialog box and click the Import button to bring the added words back in.

New hard drive, reinstall upgrade from CS2 to CS4 Question

Hi,
I upgraded my CS2 to CS4 Extended early this year, my hard drive just bit the dust and I have to re-install the CS4, will I have to call customer service again to get my copy of CS4 Extended activated, again?

Like you, I've completely recovered from a hard drive failure - one of two in a RAID 0 arrangement in my case. Windows Backup restored it completely, likewise without re-registration, etc. A key difference is Windows Backup runs for me late at night, in a set-it-and-forget-it fashion (my computers stay on 24/7). I don't have to boot up a separate system to run it.
But I don't doubt Image is a good product.
It's good to have good alternatives to choose from.

I was able to get part way through cs4, it showed up in my downloads but never got as far in the process as to ask for serial numbers. I tried with cs2 and I got an error message that some bit of information was incorrect. I currently have both downloaded on two other lap tops I own. One is operational and one is dead. I cannot access the dead one to remove the program. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

CS2/CS3/CS4: Cannot get file path in Unicode of the current document on Windows

In my automation plugin I need to have full absolute path of the opened document with any possible non-English letters. Using SDK examples Listener and Getter that come with Photoshop SDK the full absolute path which I obtain is in the default ANSI code page (CP_ACP) and I can convert it to Unicode using MultiByteToWideChar() API. However this works well when I have corresponding to document name language set in the "Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Advanced -> Select a language to match the language version of the non-Unicode programs you want to use." For example if name of the document has Russian letters and chosen language in "Regional and Language Options" is also Russian the described conversion works well. If I change "Regional and Language Options" to English for example, full path returned by Photoshop SDK API (AliasToFullPath in PIUFile.cpp) for the document with Russian letters will contain "????????.psd" symbols.
So I need to have an ability to get absolute file path in Unicode. Is it possible in Photoshop CS2/CS3/CS4 for Windows? I have searched forum and SDK but could not find info on it.
Is it possible to have native HANDLE of the opened file to get file info using Windows API?
Please advice.

CS2 to CS4

Can I upgrade my CS2 direcly to CS4 by downloadin the upgrade through the internet or by buying the upgrade CD package?

Make sure you buy the correct upgrade. There's a CS3 to CS4 and a CS/CS2 to CS4.

Upgrade CS2 to CS4 or CS5?

I have CS2 and with my new Win7 laptop its time to upgrade.
I'm not a power user but like to dabble in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Firefox and Acrobat.
Is there any reason (possibly other than cost) not to go to CS5? Will I get good deals on CS4 and is that the right path for my needs and environment?

You will not find any great savings on a legit copy of CS2 to CS4 upgrade. The price is the same for a CS2 to CS5 so you might just as well go that route.

CS2 and CS4 please Help!

I recently upgraded from CS2 to CS4, and I'm very happy with it! i have it on my desktop computer, but what I was wondering is if it would be possible (since i no longer have CS2 installed on this machine) to install CS2 on my laptop? or would the registration of it conflict with CS4 on this machine?
Any and all help would be greatly apreciated! this is my first time posting to the Adobe forums so I hope that this is in the right section =)

I crashes every time i open it. it suddenly started happening. i could get just past the opening pane at first allowing me to choose what kind of document to open print rgb etc, the it stopped doing that. i get the opening pane the it crashes, it aslo happens in past copies cs2 cs3 cs4 non of my illustrator copies will open

It could be an issue with your font caches. Go get fontnuke and try deleting all your system and application font caches.
It doesn't sound like a preference issue if it's affecting all the other versions. Do you have the suite installed? Is Photoshop working properly?

CS2 and CS4 on same computer?

Hello! I hope this has not already been asked and answered but I did honestly try to find an answer and failed. Anyway:
Mac with CS2 currently installed.
QUESTION: If I buy the CS4 upgrade, can I install it and have both CS2 AND CS4 running on the same computer? Not necessarily simultaneously...just be able to launch one or the other.
If yes, where might instructions for such an installation be?

PS. I tried downloading a trial version of CS4 from Adobe website and could not get their "special" downloader to work. Tried Safari and Firefox. Is there some special trick?

I recently upgraded from Photoshop CS2 to CS4. Can anyone tell me how to transfer the actions I created in CS2 to CS4? I use a mac.

Save them from the flyout menu in the top right corner of the Actions palette in CS2, then load them into CS4.

PM 6.5 to Indesign CS to CS2 to CS4

It was a nightmare going from PM 6.5 to Indesign CS in terms of line endings and general spacing so I let a third party do the conversions in her CS2 for these 200 plus page documents. I now want to buy CS4 so I can take back some document control from the third party. Will the conversion from CS2 to CS4 be as painfull as going from PM6.5 to CS/CS2 in terms of spacing? TIA for any feedback.

Pagemaker and ID used completely different text engines. In particular, by default ID uses a paragraph composer that balances lines in an entire paragraph, rather than the single line composer in PM. It's not surprising that line endings would shift, particularly if you used PM tracking which is also significantly different from ID. Most people think the typography is ID is superior.
I'm not sure if you mean will line endings shift again between ID CS2 and CS4, or from Pagemaker to CS4. The answer to both is probably yes, but not as much from ID to ID version as from Pagemaker. There have been changes in the text engine with each new version which affect line balancing, particularly in justified text. You won't see these changes happen, though, until you start to edit a story and force a recomposition, or you force all stories to recompose in the new version by hitting Ctrl (Cmd) + Alt (Opt) + / (and why this doesn't seem to be shown on the default menus is a mystery) or by exporting to .inx or .idml and opening that.

Upgrading from CS2 to CS4

I've upgraded from CS2 to CS4 on my WindowsXP, and my question is, can i now safely remove CS2 from my program roster without impacting any of my CS4 applications?

If you're low on disk space, uninstalling CS2 will accomplish NOTHING. If you've reached this point, you need a new harrdrive.
Working with a system drive with under 20% free space is a disaster waiting to happen.
