Links from other programs won't open in Firefox

This has been asked a number of times before, but none of the answers worked for me. I have Firefox 26.0 (the most stable for me) and Thunderbird 24.6.0. After a computer crash and reloading both programs, I first noticed the problem with links from Thunderbird, both clicking and right clicking with "open in browser". But then I remembered trying to open help in MS word and Frontpage which are supposed to open from the internet.
I have checked that Firefox is the default browser, changed the file (none) file transfer protocol, then deleted it, etc. Nothing helps.

I now have FireFox 32.0.2 no joy. I have loaded ThunderBrowse which took care of Thunderbird but still can't load links from other programs. I fixed this before (other backups, I crashed my windows C drive and have been trying to restore), but can't remember how. I think it required reloading IE (I had deleted IE on my latest restore), but I have now done that with no joy.
When I click on a link from another program, nothing happens, and when I right click and am offered "open in browser" nothing happens, and when offered " copy browser link" it doesn't copy.
I tried resetting FireFox, no joy.
Noticed control panel "set program access" doesn't hold, always goes back to custom, and defaults to "uses default browser"!
Please help!

  • URLs clicked in other programs won't load in Firefox

    Just within the last 1-3 weeks (?) or so, I find that I can't click on links in other programs and have the URL load in Firefox, which is my default browser. They always used to load perfectly and switch me to the new tab in FF, but now they don't.
    At first I tried disabling a couple of recent FF add-ons one at a time to see if one of them might have been the problem, but that didn't seem to solve it, though I may have missed one. Still, I can't imagine how an unrelated add-on could cause URLs not to load from other programs. I have tried loading URLs by clicking on them in Thunderbird, WordPad, MailWasher Pro, and even Libre Office, but all of them either just twitched the screen for an instant and then stopped, or else gave me a message such as "WordPad was unable to open the URL" or "There was a problem sending the command to the program" (Libre Office). However, when I copy and paste those same URLs into FF and hit Enter, those sites load perfectly.
    I may be wrong in this, but it appears that something has changed within FF that now prevents links clicked in other programs from loading. My only other thought at the moment is that this '''may''' possibly have started about the time I upgraded from FF 10.0.2 to FF 11.0.1, but I have no firm evidence to support that theory.
    This is really an annoying and inconvenient problem, so any help in resolving it will be hugely appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Al

    The problem is fixed now as a result of some help I got on the WindowsSecrets forum. Once I realized that the problem was occurring not just with MWP and Thunderbird, but with other programs as well (I tried WordPad and Libre Office, both of which likewise failed to load the URL into Firefox), I posted the question on other forums, trying to see if others knew anything about this issue. I got the answer from a forum member on this page:
    http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread.php/145441-URLs-clicked-in-other-programs-won-t-load-in-Firefox?p=847784#post847784
    In case you're not a member there or can't load that page, here was his suggestion:
    With FF closed type %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ in the start menu search box, click the item that appears and delete localstore.rdf FF will replace it on starting.
    I did that and all four programs that had previous problems loading URLs, including MWP, now load them perfectly. The only (minor) problem with this solution was that localstore.rdf apparently stores all the info about such things as the Firefox toolbars and their customisation, so all that was lost when I deleted the file, but I got them re-customised fairly quickly and all is well. Any thoughts regarding what localstore.rdf does, why this problem happened, or how to prevent it from happening again will be appreciated.
    I hope this info helps. Thanks again for all your help.
    Regards,
    Al

  • Firefox won't open external links (from other programs), says its already running but not responding.

    I'm having this problem, everytime i click a link on other program, like the program's link on the about tab, or a youtube link on Live Messenger, it won't open, a dialog pops up saying firefox is already running and not responding, but it is there, and working.
    If it matters, i have the "beta" tab preview enabled on the windows 7 toolbar.

    You're welcome

  • Firefox 6.0.2 is no longer opening links from other programs even with all extensions disabled

    Firefox updated to 6.0.2 last night and now it will not open any links from outside programs. When you click the hyperlink, the window flashes but Firefox does not respond. I have disabled all extensions, it did not affect the issues.
    Also with this update, I am unable to use Synergy, Firefox locks the cursor to one computer and will not let it move to another.

    I am having the same problem with Firefox version 8.0.1. I checked addons and they are up to date. When I make Chrome my default browser hyperlinks work fine to Chrome.

  • Netscape.cfg error on startup and no linking from other programs...

    When I start up Firefox 4.0.1, it gives an error message regarding a netscape.cfg file. If I happened to use a link embedded in an email to open Firefox, it does not appropriately link -- instead it still goes to my homepage. If Firefox is already open, it will link from another program.
    I am not the only person having this problem.

    Menchar,
    Where did you get this application, and has it ever worked before? What version of Measurement Studio, Visual Studio, and NI-Daq was it built on ? If it has worked before, what changed, and is it possible to strip down any parts, so you can test the pieces individually rather than the program as a whole? Also are you getting NTDLL errors while doing anything else on this computer? It may be a corrupt NTDLL.dll file http://www.downloadatoz.com/howto/How-to-resolve-ntdll-dll-error.html.
    You can view the OCX file path if you  go to Project » Add to Project » Components and Controls and select a specific CW control under the Registered ActiveX Controls. I have attached a screenshot showing an OCX file pat.

  • Firefox won't open links from other programs if already running

    I've seen this reported many other places, but none of the solutions have worked. I am running Firefox v33.0.2 (current as of this message) on Windows 7 64-bit (fully updated). I did the following:
    1. Completely deleted my profile;
    2. Uninstalled Firefox, then manually deleted all remaining files on the system pertaining to Firefox and rebooted;
    3. Gone into the Windows "Default Programs" control panel (DPCP) and told it to make Internet Explorer the default (giving it all of its defaults);
    4. Downloaded a fresh copy of the installer and installed Firefox 33.0.2;
    5. Let the installer set my default browser to Firefox;
    6. Tested link opening behaviour (see below);
    7. Let Firefox set itself as the default browser when it asked me;
    8. Tested link opening behaviour again (see below);
    9. With Firefox not running, gone back into the DPCP, and had it set all of Firefox's defaults;
    10. Tested link opening behaviour again (see below);
    11. With Firefox not running, set Internet Explorer to the default via the DPCP, then back to Firefox;
    12. Tested link opening behaviour again (see below);
    13. Repeated steps 11 and 12 with Firefox in safe-mode;
    14. Repeated steps 11 and 12 with Firefox in normal-mode with a new profile;
    The observed link-opening behaviour:
    - Internet shortcuts (i.e., actual shortcut files on, say, the Desktop) open in Firefox without issue whether or not Firefox is already running. When this approach is taken, no additional firefox.exe processes are created. The process does not have any command-line parameters per Task Manager;
    - Links clicked in Thunderbird open correctly if Firefox is not running: one new firefox.exe process is created, I get a new Firefox window and the link loads correctly. The firefox.exe process does not have any command-line parameters per Task Manager;
    - Links clicked in Thunderbird yield the "Firefox is already running, but is not responding" message if Firefox is already running. In this case, I see a second firefox.exe process created. Per Task Manager, the new process has the command-line arguments '-osint -url "FOO"' where FOO is the URL I clicked.
    From these observations I believe that the link hand-off behaviour is broken. I use a single profile using the as-installed shortcuts.
    Intitial version: 33.0.2
    Update: Updated to 33.1, still broken.

    Under Tools > Options > Advanced look to see if the "check if Firefox is default browser on startup" Check this and then restart FF. If it isn't the default it should ask if you want to make it the default. Choose yes and it should open when clicking links again.

  • Numerous websites linked to desktop icons won't open with Firefox as my default browser, but will when I subsequently designate Internet Explorer as the default browser. However, when I select IE, I cannot open Firefox. How do I fix this? CharlieA

    When I designate Firefox as my default browser, I cannot open any destop link to any website, except Mozilla. When I change that designation to Internet Explorer, I can open all destop linked websites, except for Firefox. What do I do?

    Sometimes Windows gives you weird error messages when you click a link in another program or double-click a desktop shortcut. These messages usually occur only when Firefox was closed and has to be launched before the link can be loaded. Is that what you're getting? This occurs when Firefox's registry settings get crossed up, as described in this article: [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Windows_error_opening_Internet_shortcut_or_local_HTML_file_-_Firefox Windows error opening Internet shortcut or local HTML file - Firefox - MozillaZine Knowledge Base].
    If that isn't it, what happens exactly?

  • Firefox wont open webpage when linked from another program

    When linking from other programs, a new firefox window will open, but displaying a blank page instead of loading the page. I checked for firefox being the default web browser, but I cant figure out what other options may be important. It actually started happening when upgrading to Ubuntu Natty, did not happen when using ff 4.0.1 on maverick. Any Ideas? Thanks for the help.

    First and foremost, please update Firefox to '''3.6.17''' by clicking '''Help'''| '''Check For Updates'''.
    The reason for this is because there was a security breach at Comodo which is an SSL certificate provider recently whereby a number of fraudulent certificates were inadvertently issued. These allow a hacker to impersonate any site including online banking and the Firefox version you're running at the moment will not warn you that the site is a fake. The fraudulent certificates were blacklisted in v3.6.17 and beyond.<br><br>

  • CDs from my MAC won't open on other computers

    CDs from my MAC won't open on other computers

    Any computer, Mac or Windows?
    If so, it's likely your drive. You have no problem reading them back because your drive wrote it, so the heads are in the same place to read as write.
    The problem is the same as way back to the days of floppy disks. If a drive's heads are out of alignment, disks you create will only work well for you. On any other computer, the tracks are not in the standard position.
    To check, try using an external drive (or a different one if that's what you're already using). If the problem goes away using a different drive, then your current one is no good.

  • Capturing keystrokes from other programs

    Hi,
    I'm looking for away to to capture mouse and keyboard events from programs other than my java program. I want my program to log and analyse mouse and keyboard events from any program that is open in windows. I'm designing a user interface analyser. Can anyone help?
    Cheers!
    Jacques

    Thanks for all your input, but I am sadly no closer to
    an answer :-( It looks like its going to have to be VB
    unless someone can save my life and help me out in
    Java. Please keep posting and hopefully someone might
    give me that elusive solution.VB won't do this either. What you are asking about is injecting a system wide hook into the operating system. I can pretty much guarantee that this will not be possible without resorting to native code.
    If you are on a Win32 box, the system hook you are looking for is (duh) the keyboard hook. To get it to work across processes, you have to prepare a DLL that contains the hook procedure, then register the hook procedure (and the DLL hmodule) with the Windows hooking system. After that, every time an application is loaded, Windows will also load your DLL, and will forward key press events through your hook procedure.
    Setting global hooks like this is a tricky business, and I wouldn't recommend it as a first program.
    You can do a Google search on "Windows Global Keyboard Hook" and find info on how to do this. If you want to do it using only Java, then you are out of luck.

  • HT5958 This new closed Library system stinks. Now you can't access media from other programs. Any work around?

    Let me start by saying I have been using FCP X for a year now and really love it.  We produce a half hour weekly TV series so I put it through its paces on a weekly bases.
    I was horrified to return from the holidays to find out that an automatic update yielded a whole new file system.  By packaging all of the Final Cut Event and Project folders into a single library file you can no longer access the original media from other programs such as Photoshop and After Effects without making two copies of all of the media.  This really cuts into the pipeline.  In the past we were able to recreate new show opens and transitions quickly from within After Effects by linking to the original media in the event folders to use them as source files in compositions.  The same was true of grabbing frames from Original movies for use in Photoshop for promotional materials.  With the use of the Libraries, ALL OF THE LINKS ARE BROKEN.  Yes I know you can right click on a library and still view the files, yes they are still there, but you can't do that from within another program.
    This Library system doesn't make any sense.  Its a step back from the old system.  It was much easier, quicker, and efficient to move large event libraries and projects off and on the system and backup using Finder.  Now you have to open up Final Cut to do everything and its a lot slower.
    I want to appeal to any Apple developers who monitor this to return to the old system of file management.

    Media does not have to be stored inside the library. Use the Consolidate library or event to move it to an external location.

  • My iweb program won't open.

    My iweb program won't open. I tried to open a previous html page created by it, now when I start the program it reverts to the last attempted function, informs me it can't open the html file and then shuts down when I click on "OK". Any suggestions?

    iWeb cannot open previously published html files.  It works with the domain.sites2 file that is located by default in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.
    If you don't have a domain file that contains the site/page that you want to edit you'll have to rebuild it from scratch.  However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the recreation of the site.
