Links in Hotmail emails don't open in new tab

Someone apparently made changes in about:config settings. I opened my home page MSN and when I clicked on Hotmail link, the Hotmail sign in page opened in a new tab. Previously when I clicked on teh Hotmail link on MSN home page, the sign in page would open in a new window in the same tab. I made a change in about:config and fixed that, though I cannot remember exactly what I did. Sorry for that! Now when I read one of my Hotmail messages, and I click on a link in one of them, the link opens in a window in the same tab. Until last night (after I returned from being out shopping) the link in a Hotmail message would open in a new tab. That's how I'd like it. I'd also like the Hotmail sign in page to open in a new window in the same tab when I click on the Hotmail link on the MSN homepage.
Can anyone tell me what I need to change in about:config to do this?

Hi Morbus,
Please forgive the very delayed response. It is due to illness. I have copied and pasted the information as you instructed, and maybe you might have some insight as to what is going on. Any input is much appreciated.

  • Links in an email don't open FF29.x properly (OS X)

I'm using FF29.0.1 under OS X Mavericks, with OS X "Mail" as my default email program. FF is also set as my default browser. With FF not running, if I click on a link in an email message, FF opens, but only to a blank page. If I leave FF open, and click on that email link again, that link will open in a new tab in FF, leaving the original tab blank. Or, if I have FF already open, and click on a link in an email, that link will open in a new FF tab.
Previously, with FF not running (all previous versions of FF), clicking on a link in an email would open FF and that link would open a FF tab properly. The second click on the email link has never been required.
Any explanation, or fix for this issue? BTW, this also happens with FF 29.0.1 running under OS X 10.7.5 Lion. If I uninstall FF29 and reinstall FF28, the issue is absent, reinstalling FF29 causes the issue to return.

Your reading comprehension skills are just atrocious:
"if I click on a link in an email message, FF opens, but only to a blank page."
"if I have FF already open, and click on a link in an email, that link will open in a new FF tab."
" If I uninstall FF29 and reinstall FF28, the issue is absent, reinstalling FF29 causes the issue to return. "
This is simply not an issue with the OS X Mail program, made obvious by the above statements.
Do you have any experience in this area? Have you used FF for OS X? If so, does it work properly for you? Again, as stated, I can duplicate this issue on more than one system, and it's been isolated to FF29.x.

  • In Firefox 5 links with target="_blank" don't open in new window or tab. Is there a way to make them do that?

I've search some info about this and it seems like there's a lot of people that are annoyed by links opening in new window/tab and that the 'target="_blank"' is not valid in strict XHTML. I'm guessing this could be reasons why Firefox 5 ignores the 'target="_blank"'. But in some cases you really want to open a new widow, in my case I'm using a flash application and want to open links in new windows from there and then the ctrl-click doesn't work. When opening the link in the same page and then go back the application is reloaded and it's state is lost. Probably should try to find out if there's some other way to open links from a flash application, but I'm wondering if there's a way to make Firefox 5 open 'target="_blank"' links in new tabs.

I don't know how to delete my question, anyway I'm not having this problem anymore. In our organisation the IT department deploy Firefox updates with certain settings and limitations, in the tap-options the checkbox for opening new windows in new tabs where checked but disabled. They made some changes to make this checkbox enabled and now it works as expected if it's check new windows open i new tabs and if it's not in new windows. They never opens in the same tab as they did before.

  • Websites don't open in new tab on SharePoint 2013 pages

    Hello,
I have Open in new tab checked in the page editor for a link on SharePoint 2013 page.  When the page is published, the link does not open up at all.  I have to do a right mouse click and select "Open in a new tab" manually.  I am
    using IE 11.
Anyway there could be something to get this to work with IE?  When use the page in Google Chrome, the website opens up in a new tab.  Not with IE.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Paul

I am editing links on a webpage on a SharePoint page. I am in the content management system on SharePoint 2014. I have check out the page and in the editing mode. I have highlighted a link on a page and can edit the link. There is an option to select
"Open in a new tab".   This is an internal SharePoint site, our intranet.  Client OS are Windows 8.1.
I have read that it could be the Pop-Up blocker or the  Protect mode for intranet. I will check those out.

  • Bookmarks don't open in new tabs?

    Hi there!
I often check a lot of websites at the same time, so I always selected the websites I wanted to check in the bookmarks menu, and double clicked them. They always opened in new tabs, and that was so good!
Now I select bookmarks and for one or another reason, Safari keeps opening them in a window per bookmark. Opening 10 bookmarks = opening 10 windows.
I tried the "open bookmarks in new tab: always" setting in the preferences menu, but without success!
    Who can help me?
It seems as if Mountain Lion has gained some good things, improved some bad OS X Lion things, but it forgot about the good OS X Lion things
    Bob

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • External links don't open as new tab

Hi folks.  I've asked about this, and given a suggestion about this in the past, and it still continues to this day.
In an email someone provides a link.  I click it and it opens up in a new window.  It should open up in a new tab, as I have my preferences set that way.  It is set to "Always".
Is Apple reading these forums?  How can we get that fixed?  Always open in a new tab means always.  Emails with links should open up in a current window, if it's not minimized in the dock.
Can I change this via some Terminal setting?
    Cheers

    Just making sure...
Try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file.
    Quit Safari.
Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop. Launch Safari to test.
If you can open a link in a new tab, move the .plist file to the Trash.

  • When I open a new tab firefox doesnt redirect me to it. Im not asking about links just when I click(+) to open a new tab it doesnt go to it

This problem started when I updated firefox to the current realease

As far as I know, this has never been a feature of Firefox's core. Do you have an addon such as New Tab JumpStart or New Tab King that gave you this feature in Firefox 4? It's possible that whatever addon gave you this feature before hasn't been updated to work with Firefox 5. If you don't want to wait for that addon to update, you could try either of the addons I mentioned above.
    Here's NTJS: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-jumpstart/
    And NTK: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-king/

  • When I click on any link in different site "example: facebook n emails etc" nothing opens in new tab its just blank page?

when i am on anysite and they have links to different pages so when i click on link to open it just opens blank page nothing comes so recently i been copying link locations and the paste it on url and press go but i cant keep on doing it.

    Go to Tools->Options->Apps
Here you should see two columns: Content Type on the left, Actions on the right.
Find and select excel spreadsheet or any other content type in the left column. There should be a corresponding action in the right column. What is it? You can use the drop-down list to select the option you want:
Always Ask - Firefox will ask each time: What do you want to do with this file?
Save file - Firefox will save this file to your computer
Use - Firefox will give this file to the program to open it
In case of saving, Firefox will either prompt you every time where you want the file to be saved, or save it to the default location. It depends on the preference in
    Tools->Options->General->Download

  • Recently when I click on a link from an email, Firefox started opening a new Firefox instead of a tab. I have checked and my option is set to open a new tab

This happens in e-mail and also from other browser windows

Firefox includes options of how to handle different content types, in your case the mailto links are probably set to "Use Firefox". For details of how to fix this see [[Firefox keeps opening many tabs or windows]], in particular the section "Change the action for a content type".

  • Since yesterday clicking on a link in an email message firefox doesn't open a new tab with that particular website.

I am using Firefox 3.6.13 on a 2009 Mac Pro computer (OSX 10.6.6). Up until yesterday when I clicked on a link in an email message Firefox opened a new tab and switched to that particular website. Since yesterday Firefox doesn't do that. I have Firefox set up as my default browser. I tried to change my default browser to Safari, then everything worked fine. Clicking on a link in a message a new tab has opened in Safari with that particular website. My problem is, that I like Firefox a bit more than Safari and I'd like to know what to do to restore that functionality to Firefox.

It's a good idea to try disabling Flash completely and see whether the problem continues. If it does, then my guess is incorrect. To test that, open this tab:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Plugins category
Here you can locate Shockwave Flash and use the Disable button. Keep this tab open for easy access when doing your test.
''If your test confirms that Flash is causing the problem,'' then the other thread has two suggested workarounds. The first is simple to understand (keep some Flash running at all times) but may be inconvenient to do all the time. The second is trickier because it requires editing a file in (or creating and then dragging a file into) a system folder. Fortunately you only need to do it once.

  • Firefox immediately switching to new tab even when that feature is disabled on right-click open in new tab or on ctrl+click a link. Please help.

Firefox switches immediately to new tab or the immediate next tab if multiple tabs are open, even when the respective feature is disabled, whenever I open a link by -
    1. Right-click > open in new tab
    2. Ctrl + click a link
Earlier it did not happen like this. It is really very annoying. Re-installation and clean installation of the latest version did not helped.
And this is happening mainly when I am using Facebook. Earlier it never happened so with Facebook.

I don't have the divX plug-in and I still have this problem. Why should plug-ins that are not even triggered by the affected pages alter Firefox's behavior. Feels like bad architecture.

  • Cannot open a new tab have to get a link and open in new tab.

I cannot open a new tab either by clicking on the button on the tool bar, going to File/Open New Tab or CTRL T. I think this happened after I upgraded to the newest version of Firefox. The only way I can get a new tab is to click on a bookmark or link and right click and select Open in New Tab. Very frustrating.

  • How do I stop links from opening in new tabs

Any link I click on opens a new tab. I want them to open in the same tab

    Hello,
You need to check your mouse or mouse settings because if you click on a link with middle mouse it would open a new tab, if you checked your hardware and settings but the problem still the same, go to:
'''Tools '''>''' Options '''> '''Tabs''' > Open links that open in a new window and change the option to new window.
If you have the Tab Mix Plus addon installed then '''Tools''' > '''Tab Mix Plus options''' >''' Links'''.

  • How do I get FF to focus on a new tab? I right-click and choose "Open in New Tab" and the Tab appears in the Tab bar but I cannot access or see the new page.

I open FF ver.10. My Home page is Google Search. I use a Bookmark and open, say, Hulu.com. I select a link by right-clicking and choose "Open in New Tab" The little tab in the tab bar opens but I am still viewing the Hulu.com main page and cannot view the new tab.
This happens even if I use middle-click to open a new tab. It happens with all links on any website I visit.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
