???   Links:   PDF File Links to Files On CD

Ok I have a CD that automatically opens a PDF page
On the PDF page I want 3 links and or buttons to will open files located on a CD
How do I create the links/buttons to open the files located on the CD?
(I can create a button and link it to a file on the computer but I can not edit or pre-define the files on the same cd)
Anyone know how? Can you list the step by step directions please?
Thank you

If you are opening a file on the CD itself, then you can link to other
files on the same CD readily. The trick is to keep all the files
together on your hard disk and make the links between them, then move
everything to CD.
If you want to link to the CD from the hard disk, that doesn't seem
possible as the drive letter won't be known.

  • PDF export with link to document defaulting to "Open a web link" instead of "Open a file"

I have a MS Access database and I'm trying to export reports to PDF (I have Acrobat XI Pro) that include a hyperlink to another document on the same drive on my computer.  I have tested this with hyperlinked email addresses, and emails export fine to PDF and are still functional, opening a new email in Outlook.  The hyperlinks to documents work fine in MS Access, opening a Word, PDF, or other document when clicked.
When I export to PDF, the links to documents say, "This document is trying to connect to: file:" and my filepath.  If I say "Allow," the link tries to open in my default web browser, which comes up blank.  I've tested this on other computers in our office too.  When I right-click the link, I have the option to "Open weblink as a new document" -- this opens the document successfully, but won't be very helpful or fast for our staff.  When I examine the link with Tools - Add or Edit Link, I see that the link's action defaulted to "Open a web link" when the PDF was created.  This seems like it should be "Open a file."  To see if "Open a file" would work in theory, I tried creating a test button in a blank PDF and made the "mouse up" action "Open a file" and linked to various documents on my computer.  Each time, the button does not react to being clicked at all, like nothing happened.
I also tried making a basic Word doc with just the hyperlink to another document.  It works fine in Word, but, when saved as a PDF, the hyperlink does the same behavior-- tries to connect to the web instead of opening the file on the computer.
I have a lot of experience building Acrobat PDF forms and working in Acrobat, and I'm almost certain I've created links that open another file on the computer in Acrobat before, but I'm out of ideas and an internet search isn't turning up much.  I welcome any suggestions for things to try.  Thank you!

This is what I currently have, and it attempts to open in a web browser.  Do you know of a setting in Acrobat I might need to change, or any other solution to tell Acrobat to open the "file:" URL as a document, not try to start the web browser?

  • Can anyone tell me how to change a .pmd file that is one of 28 or so files linked to a .pdf?

Here is the issue. Someone in our organization who has since retired did our catalog in pagemaker. There are about 28 .pmd files. These files are then linked (I am assuming) to one .pdf that we put on the server as the total catalog.
I need to change one .pmd. How can I do this so that it links correctly to the .pdf? Do I need to recreate the .pdf with all the .pmd files? If so, how?
    Help???

The easiest way would probably be to PDF the one document you need to change, and replace the appropriate pages of the existing PDF with those of the new PDF. This can be done in Acrobat, but not in Reader.

  • Can't open pdf file linked through a ASPX link in Safari

I'm a new Mac user so sorry if this is basic. It appears when I click on a link in Safari that should open a PDF file (link uses a ASP link) I get the download box instead. I can download the file to my desktop and open it with adobe from there. I just downloaded the latest adobe reader. This is a new intel iMac (10.4.8). If I click directly on a link to a PDF file it opens in Safari with no problem. The specific link I'm having trouble with is :
    http://www.rochester.k12.mi.us/download.aspx?ft=MzAwMTV8fHwyNC4xOTIuMTM5LjE4NXx8 MS8yLzIwMDcgODo0OTozNyBQTQ%3D%3D
It seems to see the file as having a ".pdf.exe" extension so doesn't open it with adobe but sees it as an application so offers to download or cancel.
Really clicking on any PDF link from this page causes the same problem : http://www.rochester.k12.mi.us/index.asp?folder=15700&name=Physical%20Science
These links act OK using IE. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks...Jim

    Sorry for the insufficient info.
My environment is Windows 7 64bit.
The PDF was converted from Word file and for example the link which should open a local file was working on version 10.1.1.33 (like first picture below) but not anymore after updating to 10.1.4(second one).
Can you help me with this?

  • Why do I have to remove Adobe Acrobat in order to link pdf files using Preview?

Whenever I try to link pdfs to make a single file, Adobe Acrobat opens automatically and prevents me from linking them, instead demanding that I pay money for a subscription. Instead, I have to remove Adobe, at which point I can open Preview, and then I can link the files.
Is there any way to link documents without having to remove and then reinstall Adobe?
I have an iMac 10.6.8 and the latest Adobe that will install.

  • Issue with opening PDF file link from Safari

    Hi Everyone,
I got a problem with opening PDF file link from Safari 4.04. Instead of getting a normal pdf content, it shows some weird characters. Not sure it is something wrong with Adobe Reader Plugin or Safari?
I have uploaded a screenshot of the issue in the adobe forum (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/531870). Please help!
    Many Thanks,
    John

There's nothing wrong, except the fact that you have Adobe Reader installed. You don't need it, so get rid of it; it will only cause problems with Safari. What you're seeing is the contents of the PDF file, rather than having it displayed.
If you want to download a PDF file, you can either Control-click on the link and choose "Download Linked File As…", or you can Option-click on the link for the file and it will be downloaded to your Download folder (usually your Desktop).
If you want to view a PDF file in Safari, you don't need Adobe Reader; Safari is perfectly capable of doing this by itself and has been for years. Adobe Reader will only get in the way and slow everything down.

  • Linking PDF and Excel File

Is there a way to link a PDF to an excel file so when the end user types in information it will auto populate what they are looking for? I would like for the end users to be able to search for their contact information by inputting their zip code and it populate in the PDF.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am not even sure where to start.

Yes, but it's very complicated and requires a set of custom-made scripts.
The easiest way of doing it is by converting the Excel file to a plain-text
file (like a CSV file) and then attach that file to the PDF and use it as
the data source for the script that populates the fields.

  • Linked PDF files won't open in Preview

I have a a few Table of Content PDF files linked to a large number of PDF files in subdirectories (the old AGES library system).  When I try to open the linked file in Preview i get an error saying that I don't have permission to open this file.  Adobe Reader works fine and I can open the individual files in preview but trying to open them from the TOC PDF file doesn't work.  Repair permissions says everything is fine. I'd rather not install Adobe Reader so is there something I'm missing in trying to get Preview to work?
                                                                                                                                                                             Thanks

I can suggest a workaround, though I don't know what the cause of the problem is. It just showed up recently in my installation of MacOSX 10.8.5.
I opened all the files that had difficulty with permissions. Then I closed them and opened the file with the links (the Table of Contents file). At that point the links worked. Go figure.
Opening the Table of Contents file first and then opening and closing the problem files resulted in the links taking me to the first page of the linked document, rather than the correct page within it.
I had checked file permisssions previously. That was not the probelm. I even used the Terminal to reset them to universal read/write, but that made no difference.
    HTH.

  • File Links in PDF getting messed up when viewed in browser

When we put a file link in a PDF (\\servername\sharename\directory\file.doc) and display that PDF in a browser, when we click on that link, it becomes http://webname/servername/sharename/directory/file.doc which does not work at all.
I have tried the current versions of Reader 8 and 9, as well as an old copy of 6.1 in browsers ID6/7/8 and Firefox 3.5.
Our web unit insists that it didn't used to do this.
If I change the Reader option to not open inside the web browser, then clicking on the file link works fine. It's just when Reader opens up in the browser that we have this problem.
Anyone else run into this? Our folks really like Reader inside of the browser.
    Thanks.

This is a post for Adobe Acrobat, not Adobe Reader as it is a functionality issue with Acrobat.  It is peculiar, I am having the same problem when I save the file to a local Windows Home Server.
I have a link called file://whsservername/foldername and it becomes file://whsservername/foldernamewherepdfislocated////whsservername/foldername which is totally convoluted.  I am trying to research a solution for this but if anyone else knows what settings to change in Acrobat that would be a great help to post.

  • "Placing" linked PDF File in Illustrator for Markup Edits?

When I highlight text in a PDF file that is linked to an Illustrator file (PDF is "Placed" in the Illustrator file as a linked object), text highlights in the PDF file do not show up in Illustrator when I update the link.  Does anybody know why, or is there some setting or workaround to force the PDF markups to show up in Illustrator?
    Reason for Question
I often use Illustrator as a PDF editor because it is much more flexible than Acrobat's clunky editing tools.  There are some significant problems however.  If you open a PDF page in Illustrator, you lose some stuff like paragraph formatting, which Illustrator wants to left justify (same problem when opening an AutoCAD file in Illustrator).  You can also have trouble with missing fonts like Helvetica, which isn't a default system font because it is licensed and expensive.  Illustrator will swap the missing font out with a substitute so it can edit the text.  (Acrobat will do the same thing if you try to edit a font that isn't loaded in your system).
A workaround to maintain exact registration if I just want to mark up a PDF file (rather than changing the text) is to "Place" the PDF file in Illustrator.  When Placed, the file behaves like an object the isn't editable in Illustrator (you can edit a Placed object from Illustrator, but Illustrator will use the authoring application to do the edits, in this case, Acrobat).  I you are interested doing the same thing,... when I use Illustrator to mark up another file like PSD, JPG or PDF, I initially open the file in Illustrator to capture the dimensions, and then delete everything, and then "Place" the file back into Illustrator.  You can optionally link or embed the Placed object.  After Placing, I use the transform tool to move the Placed Object's upper left corner to 0,0 (XY Coordinates) to acquire registration, lock the layer, and do my markups on separate layers.
This procedure is a bit clunky and requires multiple construction files but Illustrator's vector tools are much better than the most of the markup tools (but not all) in Photoshop or Acrobat.  A Photoshop file will link to Illustrator, and you can export it back to Photoshop, but the Illustrator construction file will not be "linked" into Photoshop, so if you need to make changes with Illustrator you have a couple of options.  You can open the Illustrator smart object from Photoshop (Photoshop will launch Illustrator to do the edits), or you can delete the smart object and work on the Illustrator construction file directly and re-import.
Since you can't select the text of a Placed PDF file object in Illustrator to highlight text, I'd like to do some of the text highlighting in the linked Acrobat file upstream of Illustrator.  I should be able to bounce back and forth with both files open, the Illustrator construction file and the linked PDF file.  Problem is that when I add a highlight to the PDF file, it does not show up in the Illustrator placed object that is linked to the PDF file.
So back to my original question.  Does anybody know why PDF text highlights do not show up in Illustrator when the PDF file is placed as an object in Illustrator?  Is there a workaround to force the PDF text highlights to display in Illustrator?
FYI, I working on a business presentation and need to mark up a few pages of IRS publication 463, which is a 58 page PDF document with a bunch of "destination" links (10 to 20 links per page).  I can extract a page, do my markup edits, and then "replace" the page back into the original Acrobat file and all the links and bookmarks will still work, but registration is critical.
    I'm using CS6
Thanks in advance for your insight.

Mylenium, Thank you for your on-point explanation of why the markups don't import into Illustrator.  Based on your input, I did some digging and discovered:
I can export the Acrobat "Comments" (text highlights, but not markups?) to a FDF file
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/acrobat/pro/using/WS40A4853E-0D48-46a6-8AB6-6B9A27A22D83.html
and then optionally re-import them to another PDF, including a blank document (with the same dimensions to maintain registration) or the final output file.  I can then open the PDF (that contains the comments only) using Photoshop and save as a PSD file.  Photoshop captures the text highlight color graphic without the white background or text so I am able to achieve transparency.  I can then "Place" the Photoshop file as an object on its own layer in the Illustrator construction file as either an embed object or a linked object, but I tend to link for a number of workflow reasons.
Quite clunky, but it seems to maintain exact registration (although for some reason, whenever I place an object in either Illustrator or Photoshop I need to move (transform) the object corner to 0,0 because it is typically off by a pixel or 2).  Not sure if there is a way to also export PDF "Markups", but my objective was to use Acrobat's highlighting tools combined with Illustrator's vector graphic tools for markups, so even if I can only export the Acrobat text highlights and not the "Markups", I can still achieve my objective.
From a work flow perspective, I may optionally choose to use the text highlights only as a reference in the Illustrator construction file and turn them off when saving back to PDF.  I would then import the text highlights (FDF file) into the final PDF so they are actual Acrobat highlights rather than raster objects, but I do have the option.
I have also noted that I can print an Acrobat file to PDF to capture the text highlights, but that method introduces problems with registration and transparency (the white paper background).  I'll often print my final output to PDF rather than saving to achieve a small flat file that will render consistently on different computers, but in this case registration is important so it is better to save to PDF and live with the larger files size.
Why all the fuss?  Acrobat is good at highlighting text and Illustrator is good at drawing stuff like curvy paths with variable strokes.  Illustrator also has layers and stacking order control.  (Acrobat has clunky wannabe layers that are good for limited stuff like multiple versions, but not much help with graphic composition or stacking order).  I need workflows that can merge tools from multiple programs (Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, Autocad, and Solidworks).  I could do my vector markups in Illustrator, then save to PDF and do the highlights in the final Acrobat file, but if I need to change the vector graphics later I would lose the highlights.  Doing the highlights in a separate PDF file and then exporting to a FDF file lets me make changes in Illustrator without having to recreate the highlights from scratch.
Thank you for your assistance.  If you have any additional suggestions I am always striving to improve my workflows.  btw, I've experimented with some of the 3rd party PDF editor's, but not the expensive ones (less than a few hundred dollars).  Most of them do a few things better than Acrobat, but they all have their shortcomings and I'm leery of investing my time in applications that might be obsolete in few years.  Perhaps this discussion is better suited to the Acrobat Forum, but I do a lot of PDF editing with Illustrator despite its limitations.

  • Embedded mms-links change to open file-links when converting .doc to pdf

When converting word documents to pdf, all of my embedded video mms-links change to local open-file type links while my http-links keep their address. Why is this?
Since I've got about 600 of them I'm not too keen on changing them all back in Acrobat.
The links look like this in word:
    mms://something.com/videos/file.wmv
But turns out like this after conversion:
    Z:\catalog\mms:\something.com\videos\file.wmv
Notice the switch of slashes from / to \ after conversion.
    Anyone got a clue?
    Thanks!

    Hi!
    My versions are:
    Word 2007 and/or Word 2003 and Adobe 9.1.0.163
I think I solved it using this add-in:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=4d951911-3e7e-4ae6 -b059-a2e79ed87041

    Thanks anyway!
