Links to Folders on a external drive changed after reboot

I've got the following problem:
I've created some links to folders on a external (Firewire 800, Lacie 2big Quadra) drive in my Finder.
At first glance they are working fine and looking good, listened under places.
But after Reboot the links are changed to random files or folders on my usual Mac HD. The links pointing to folders on the internal HD are working fine!
For example:
before: "Work, Projects, Invoices" – after: "proloj.msd;italianWS;logqhrscv.ll"
This happened (almost) everytime, so i can't really work with my places
I tried to start the external drive up, before the Macbook starts, but no change.
Is this a Finder bug or a problem with the external HD? Otherwise it's working very well. I heard some Rumours about the latest 10.5.6 Update and Problem with the finder?
BTW - i got all updates from Apple

It happened again – but now i got pictures
After freshly adding the links:
http://dort.entlang.com/before.png
And after reboot:
http://dort.entlang.com/after.png
And the new links are not so random as it seems! "lpoptions.1.gz" is always the first entry.

  • How to move Downloads, Movies, Music& Pictures folders to an external drive

I have a 2008 iMac which hard disk (as you probably know) is not upgradable. After 16 months of use the disk became full so I bought an external firewire drive (1T LaCie d2). My plan is to move most folders located under /Users/username/ (the Documents, Downloads, Movies, Music and Pictures folders) to the external drive and replace them with aliases.
Searching on the net, I found instructions on how to move the iTunes Music folder and how to change iPhoto default photos folder. I then moved the said folders and their contents to the external drive and created the aliases. Now when I try to delete the folders for their original location I get a message stating that "folders cannot be modified or deleted because they are required by Mac OS X". I know that I can delete these folders using terminal Unix commands but is this the correct approach?
Or should I go and create a new user account using as Home directory a folder located on the external drive? Or, alternatively, just change the existing user Home to one in the external drive?
I think my question is important and of general interest and I was really disappointed to find out that Apple has no documentation on this subject (or at least, I couldn't find any).

this happens because they are protected by "deny delete" ACLs.

that's one way to do it. then you can move the folders to teh external and put symbolic links, *NOT aliases* in their original locations.

Or, alternatively, just change the existing user Home to one in the external drive?
that might be the easiest option. just copy the whole home folder to the external. then go to system preferences->accounts. unlock the lock at the bottom, control-click on your user and choose 'advanced options". in the popup change the location of the home directory to the external. then reboot and when you log in your home directory should be on the external. then you can trash the old home directory on the internal.

  • How do I prevent itunes from moving my music from its original place ie folders in an external drive when I play music from itunes. I have all my music in artist folders and separated by MPG3/MPG4 and FLAC folder within the artist folder.

How do I prevent itunes from moving my music from its original place ie folders in an external drive when I play music from itunes. I have all my music in artist folders and separated by MPG3/MPG4 and FLAC folders within the artist folder and itunes moves the track/s whenever i try and load selected music to my ipod/iphone. I've tried to find some sort of preference to prevent this, but no joy? What am I missing?

Try opening iTunes preferences. Then click on advanced tab. Then uncheck "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library." By default, iTunes copies music to its own media folder when you use iTunes to play the music.

  • Portcost value changes after reboot on Cat OS

here is the command on my switch
    set spantree portcost 3/1-48 3019
after reboot have noticed many times.. the value changes to someother random value..
Can any one explain whats the reason behind this..
    Thanks.
    Mahesh.

    Hi Mahesh,
    Howdy!!
Can you please confirm that after reboot there is a change in path cost of port cost. As you have manually configured the port cost is should not change for that switchport but yes path cost may change after reboot as switch may found some other best path to reach the root bridge. All depends on topology and your network design.
Just want to confirm when the switch is rebooted does the value you have configured in the command changes in your config or you are checking this with a "sh spantree" command?

  • Linking I-tunes library to external drive

I have managed to successfully relocate my i-tunes library onto an external drive, having followed instructions in the i-tunes for Dummies book. (my laptop internal hard drive was full). However, i-tunes has not linked itself to the external i-tunes library file. I understood that this should happen automatically. How do I link them together?

    Hey there,
One thing you should check is where your iTunes searches for your iTunes folder. Head to iTunes and then Preferences. When the window pops up, head over to the Advanced tab. Near the top of the tab, you will see where iTunes currently locates your Music folder. Click the Change button and then direct it to where the folder is located on your External drive. See if that helps.

  • How do I copy mail mailbox folders from an external drive

My old Macbook Air (2009) has died - logic board failed - so I have removed the ssd drive and mounted it in a Runcore usb enclosure from C Memory - worked a treat.  I would like to copy a number of Mail mailboxes I used for archiving old email messages from this drive on to my new Macbook Air but cannot see them or the user library folders on the now external drive.  Any ideas welcome.   Tim

Copy the contents of the folder on the external drive to your user folder on the new hard drive. Example - replace the Music folder with the old one. If you have folders that are the same name it should ask you if it is okay to replace the new ones. Be sure you don't have anything in the folders you replace, as you would lose any contents.

  • External drive changed to read-only

I have a Western Digital external drive that I use for Time Capsule and Super Duper! This morning, when I wanted to start work, Time Capsule said that my drive "appears to be a read-only drive," and Super Duper had failed its overnight backup.
I used BatChMod, and changed the permissions.
When I opened a finder window for the external, it still showed the read-only icon in the lower left hand corner of the window.
The Get Info window shows System as the owner, Admin as the group, with all permissions. EVERYONE has read-only permission.
When I look at the disk in Disk Utility, Repair Disk Permissions is greyed out.
What would change the disk's status, and how can I fix this?
    Thanks,
    Nicky

Most likely, your backups were corrupted, beyond Disk Utility's ability to repair them. It's possible a 3rd party disk repair app, such as +Disk Warrior,+ could have fixed them, but it's too late now.
Does the drive have two partitions, one for Time Machine backups, and a second for SuperDuper? If so, erase the Time Machine partition and let TM start over.
If not, that's a problem (see #3 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum). Your best bet is to reformat the disk with two partitions. See #5 in the FAQ for detailed instructions. Then start both Time Machine and SuperDuper over fresh.
Longer-term, having both backups on the same physical drive is not good; if the drive fails, you risk losing both of them.

  • Time machine is making two backup folders for my external drive

I have two external drives connected to my iMac, running 10.6.8.  One is the Time Machine drive; the other is PhotosMovies.  I've been having trouble for the last several months where about once a week my Time Machine backups won't finish, no matter how long I wait.  I may have figured out that it gets hung when I have left a Sparsebundle open and the computer has gone asleep.
But to my question: while trying to troublesheet this problem I also noticed that for the past several months of my backups, within each backup set there are three folders:  iMacHD, PhotosMovies, and PhotosMovies 1.  I believe at some point that disk was named PhotosMovies 1 because I replaced an older drive with a newer one and I renamed it after I copied everything over and verified the contents.
If I exclude PhotosMovies from the backup in Time Machine preferences, that folder disappears from the backup set but the PhotosMovies 1 is still there.  It is the correct size.
How do I get TM to understand that PhotosMovies 1 is no longer on the system?

Does the drive have its own external power supply brick or is it bus-powered? Firewire or USB?
Try resetting the buses per the five steps listed in this document: What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device

  • Pleas help with my music files and folders on an external drive

A while back, I thought I had a virus on my C drive and was advised to by an external hard drive to move all my important files and folders to. As an inexperienced computer guy, this eventually led to a problem. I have many folders that shouldn't have been moved, main folders that were broken up, duplicates of songs, some song files that are empty, etc. This doesn't just apply to iTunes folders, it includes all the computer's music folders.
Can you please help me reorganize and delete duplicates (C and external drives)? Is there a quick way to search for song files that will not work? Is there a way to wipe out all iTunes files and start over without losing the songs bought via itunes?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I think you're in the wrong forum. This is the iDVD forum. If I read your question correctly you probably want the iTunes for Windows forum.

  • Can I move my Application Support & Audio folders to an external drive?

Having installed Final Cut Studio 2 on my 15" MacBook Pro (120GB HD) I find two monstrous folders when running Omni Disk Sweeper - in Library/Application Support/ the top 2 folders are: 16.2GB for Final Cut Studio and 10.9GB for LiveType and in Library/Audio I have a 30.9GB folder Apple Loops.
Can I move these assets to an external drive and free up space on my laptop without compromising Final Cut or other programmes?
With these massive archives, I find I'm always struggling to keep 10GB free on my machine.
Be most grateful for any suggestions?

You should be able to move things like the livetype templates and the apple loops to another drive. Do some searching here (and perhaps in the manuals) to find out the details. I know this has been the subject of previous threads. As far as the apple loops go, if you're not using them in either soundtrack pro or garage band, you can definitely just delete them.

  • How to retrieve bookmarks either from folders/Files or external drive

    Hello Mozilla,
I have looked up your FAQ and Hidden Folder and File Mozilla Support Forum and Community areas to try and search for my past Bookmarks that were on a previous laptop. I had the data backed up to my Passport external drive and transferred to another laptop, since then, that too went down and so I am looking to see if Mozilla may have a way of getting back these files either from the Passport or 'other' means.
I did not Sync my bookmarks at that time, I have now and have looked into the Windows Hidden Folders and Files with no luck in finding these Bookmarks which are substantial.
Any other areas and or steps that I may have missed/have not taken as I am on Windows 8 (HELP-anyway)
    Resources searched:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/952646?esab=a&as=aaq
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders
    http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
I have even searched the hidden folders and files in My Computer and see information going back to September 2011, June 2012 and June 2013. if I am able to pull this data up, what steps am I missing in retrieving the old Bookmarks or have I lost them forever?
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Ronald

One way could be the following two-step approach:
    # create an HTML copy of the backed-up bookmarks - or from some other browser you may have been using in the mean time
    # import the HTML file as suggested here: [[Import Bookmarks from a HTML file]]
Let us know, if it helped

  • Linking music files on an external drive to a new mac

    Hi,
I have recently bought a new macbook, replacing my old ibook, all my music tracks are on an external hard drive, I want to keep them there, but I want to be able to play them on my new macbook, how do I do this?
I have changed the folder so itunes is looking at the right one, but my new itunes is empty. do I need to copy the track listings somehow into the new library?
I can only find instructions for physically moving the media, which I don't want to do.
I had wanted to be able to hook up the hard drive to both computers, is that possible?
    thanks very much
    vbw

You should be able to do a File -> Add and then point to the iTunes music folder on your external drive and it should fill in the iTunes library for you. Since you are already telling iTunes to use that location, there shouldn't be any copying or moving of files about.
As to hooking it to two different computers, while you can probably get away with it, each iTunes treats the library as its own, so you could end up in trouble when one library alters the library somehow that the other one might not be happy about.

  • I can read but I can't write to an external drive - changing permissions

I can read but I can't write to an external drive.
How do I change permissions? None of the helps here on the discussions have helped.
Why would a computer company let me read files but not write? Hahaha. This is insane.
I have to write computer files for work. It's a project due this morning.
Man, I'm going to have to go back to PC.
Just need the compter to write files.

If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

  • Copying files to other folders and to external drive takes forever

I am assuming at  this point that it is a hard drive issue. Here are the details.
I am using a Macbook Pro 2.4 ghz, 4 gb RAM, 250mb HD that is 3 years old. This is a recent problem. I can move large files (1gb) from my external drives to another external drive AND from an external drive to my HD. But if I move a file from my HD to an external drive OR try to copy the file to another folder on my HD then it goes very very very slow and usually freezes up the computer.
To solve the problem I re-installed Snow Leopard from scratch and then upgraded to Mountain Lion. So clean install... Disk Utility reports no errors. No permission problems.
I was able to just backup 22gb using Time Machine to external drive.. took forever but it did work.. but then when i try to copy a 1gb file using Finder it hangs. It also seems to hang just randomly, especially when two programs try to run at the same time.. such as Time Machine and Safari. it does not like multiple things hitting the HD.
I am assuming I need to replace the HD but wanted to check here for any advice first.
    Thanks,
    Clint

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
