Links to iTunes Content

At least once per week, I get an email about new or interesting iTunes Store content. When I click on a specific PodCast, movie, or music icon in the email, my web browser tries unsuccessfully to open it, when in fact, the link should open iTunes. This is also true when I am already in my browser and see a link to an interesting Podcast, or similar.
How can I fix this, so that the links that begin, "http://newmusic.itunes.com/redir/blahblahblah" actually open the iTunes app?
Firefox browser
Thunderbird email client

I'm trying to solve this problem, and can offer some info that might help.
The link to an actual album on itunes is very long and scripty. I was just trying to use this link on my artist page on myspace, and it keeps truncating it, cutting off the ListId at the end. Perhaps your content is being truncated for similar reasons. hmm

Does home sharing allow my husband and I to share our iTunes content?  If so, how does this work?  From what I've read to use home sharing the devices/computers all require the same Apple ID and password.  My husbands iTunes is linked to his email/password and mine is my email/password.  So if that's the case how to we go about sharing?  God I hope that makes sense.

All apps are forever tied to the Apple ID that bought them. To stop your id from popping up, you need to delete the apps on his phone, and then repurchase them under his account.

  • Home sharing working fine - but not for paid itunes content on some devices

My setup is a simple apple home sharing network.
I have a mac mini running OS X 10.6.8 and itunes 11.0.3(42) it hosts a lot of music, DVD's that have been re-encoded and paid for content from itunes.
The mac mini is conntected to the network over a very good gigbit lan and has 4 apple TV3 (latest gen) hanging off the network, and multiple PC/Mac/ipod/ipad devices hanging off the network.
All these devices connect using home sharing and work very well (I can use all 4 apple TV devices at once streaming 1080p media with no lag / delay problems)
There is one exception to this, my PC and Mac.
I have a Macbook pro running OX 10.6.8 and itunes 11.0.3(42) and a PC running Windows 7 64bit with Itunes 11.0.3(42). Both are also connected via gigabit lan, both run of SSD's so have excellent local disk performance, both have over 6 GB of ram at least.
If I open itunes and connect to the itunes home media server and play music, tv shows films all is well, ranging anything from a DVD rip to a HD bluray rip. as soon as I try to play a HD movie or TV show downloaded from itunes there is a problem. I get approx 30 seconds into the content and then it just stops as if I'd hit pause and never actually starts playing.
At first I thought this was buffering problems/flooding on my lan, so I isolated this, even though my network monitor shows lots of capacity on the lan, I removed all devices apart from the mac mini serving the home media and either the PC or the Mac, I hit the same problem.
To diagnose this further I opened a network monitor application on the PC, the playback mac and the media server mac mini and tried to open a file in itunes.
on the client and the server the network spikes straight away, and uses 100 network for around 5 seconds (if I do this with other devices such as apple TV's plugged into the network too the overall usage is lower, it basically uses as much as is availble, so %100 utilization isn't a problem) and then the network traffic just stops on both devices. The same is true of the disk activity, I see a raise is disk I/O on the home media mac mini for 4 - 5 seconds and then a lesser spike on the local playback machine both stop after 4 - 5 seconds in sync with the network stopping.
Both machines remain on the network fine, but the transmission of the media between itunes server and client just stops. I then open another file, a bluray rip, some music etc, and it plays works fine, return back to the paid for itunes content, it fails at exactly the same spot.
This happens on any itunes paid for HD movie or TV shows, so it's not just one file, it's approx any of the 200 itunes downloaded HD files I have on this machine.
I can play the files fine with apple TV's, I've tried watching 4 different apple downloaded itunes HD films at once on 4 apple TV's it works fine, it's only if I open the file via itunes with the PC or Mac.
All are linked with the same home sharing account so it's not / shouldn't be a DRM style issue.
Why is this happening on the more powerful PC/Mac computers, but not on the lesser apple TV, ipad, iphone devices ?

going to try to bump this to get some traction / suggestions on it

  • How to properly update iTunes content while traveling abroad?

Spent some time searching and found a number of threads covering T&Cs and whys and wherefores of US Citizens on extended overseas travel trying to update or purchase iTunes content. There's a lot of 'why not' but not much 'how to'.
I'm seeking the Apple-approved solution for those of us with US based iTunes accounts who are traveling or deployed overseas or take extended temporary jobs abroad. How can we legally, properly, update our podcast subscriptions, apps for iPhones, or purchase content?
Do we have to simply change the country setting at the bottom of the iTunes Store window, so we are interacting with whatever the local Store is and the content will live happily in iTunes no matter which Store it was purchased from?
Do we have to set up a new account with local credit card in every land we are assigned?
There has to be a way, it seems illogical that you can't update podcasts or apps while traveling. There's got to be an Apple-approved method for this!
If anyone knows the answer or a link to the answer or something near to it, please provide the info. The T&C are clear enough in regards to "purchases" and using the US store only from in the US, but doesn't answer the 'how-to' for customers traveling abroad who are not spending any money by getting new podcast episodes or free app updates.
So again, no need to rehash the T&C, just seeking the 'proper' way to update things if away for a while. I'll be stupefied if I hear that the official Apple answer is the iPhone content is frozen in place until I get back in US territory.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the reply, Chris.
After posting the message, I changed my iTunes Store to India (where there may be work opportunities) and there were only Apps and iTunes U content tabs, and the T&C were similar-can only shop at the store where you are connecting from. So unless the store looks different when logging in while physically in India, there wouldn't be a way to update podcasts.
I am concerned about an important distinction, though, which is 'what will work' vs. 'what is T&C compliant'...

  • Link to iTunes  on iWeb

Is there a way/widget to install so I can add to my iwebsite a link to puchase a song directly from iTunes? It's my own recordings that are for sale on iTunes and i'd like people to be able to immediately go to iTunes and get the songs.

Go to your album in iTunes and do Right-click to *copy link*.
In iWeb create a hyperlink with what you just copied.
The skip the copy part, drag the album directly on the iWeb page.
You'll now have a link you can edit with a descriptive text.
    Edit :
If you are a contentprovider then visit this page. It tells you all you need to know :

  • Link between iTunes and Library lost. Hard drive failure

    Hi!
I need help with the following problem. (i7 27" iMac/256GB SSD + 1TB of internal disk hard drive. (SATA/7200rpm/3.5"))
The 1TB internal hard drive on my iMac failed the S.M.A.R.T. Utilities test so Apple called in the computer and I had to have the hard drive replaced. The technicians reloaded the system from a 1TB external Western Digital hard drive; I had backed up the everything on it using Time Machine.
Unfortunately, the iTunes application cannot now locate my iTunes library. I create a lot of slideshows on Aperture and use music from iTunes on the audio tracks. The titles on the audio tracks are now inaudible and are preceded by a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark inside. Can anyone help me on how I should re-establish the original link between iTunes and its library. The music files are located in folders (name of artists), within a folder (iTunes Music), within a folder (iTunes), within a folder (Music), within a folder (declangreaney) on the 1TB of internal disk drive.
In trying to solve the problem, I went through the folders and double clicked on one song. This opened iTunes so I highlighted and dragged all the other 'artist-named' folders on the iTunes interface and in doing so, I succeeded in accessing all the files. This is not wholly satisfactory, however, as I do not have my own playlists and more seriously, there is still no link between the Aperture audio tracks.
      Sincerely,
         DG.

        Hi again!
I saved the last message by accident which caused the reply to be sent off and so I had not finished what I wanted to write. Aploogies.
I didn't find the new iMac hybrid SSD/Disk system easy to understand when it arrived over a year ago. I eventually decided that the 256 SSD section would be best suited to having the Operatin System for greater speed and I must have decided to put the music files on the 1TB internal hard drive along with photos and raw video clips. I can't honestly remember. There was a lot to take in. I wasn't even aware until this failure that iTunes had a default location.
In addition to having the iTunes folder on the internal 1TB hard drive, I used Time Machine to store the entire computer contents on a 1TB Western Digital external hard drive. I had done my last Time Machine back-up on the 13 February and so I was hoping that by opening one or two songs on the back-up, they might reactivate the 'old' interface with the original playlists on it. That didn't happen but I then realised, while I was still in the Tme Machine back-ups on the WD external hard drive, that in the iTunes Media folder contained within the iTunes folder on the default Users/Username/Music location there was only an Add automatically to iTunes folder which was empty. While still still looking through the Time Machine back-upsI saw that the music instead was stored on the 1TB of internal hard drive as outlined on the first post:
'The music files are located in folders (name of artists), within a folder (iTunes Music), within a folder (iTunes), within a folder (Music), within a folder (username) on the 1TB of internal disk drive.'

  • HT1751 Question: Is it possible to move just part of my iTunes content (i.e. TV shows) to an external harddrive, keeping the rest of the content in place?  Several seasons of TV shows are taking up 102 GB of space, and I'm completely out of space on my HD

Is it possible to move just part of my iTunes content (i.e., only TV shows), keeping the rest of the Library in place?  I have purchased several seasons of some TV shows, which take up 102 GB on my harddrive, inside my iTunes Media Folder.  I don't want to move my entire Library of music and apps etc to the external harddrive (HD), but I rarely watch the TV shows, so wouldn't mind them being located on an external HD, which I would plug in before trying to watch the shows through iTunes?
    Any advice?
    Thanks!

I don't think you can simultaneously have two libraries open. But you can have your media spread across multiple disk drives. Just change your iTunes preferences such that the option "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" is not selected. That way, new items can remain on your external drive if that's where you add them from.
The only caution is if you ever add items to your library from some "temporary" location, such as a USB drive. With these preference changes, iTunes would keep the native file on the USB drive, which would possibly lead to you deleting the file and losing the link. So, when you have your preferences to allow you to add new items to iTunes without copying them to the iTunes Music folder, you would want to put the native files in the desired location first, then add to iTunes.
To move existing videos and podcasts to the external drive, you can either do that as you have been (moving the native files and correcting the ! warning), or simply delete them from the library (but keep the native files) then re-add them from their new location on the external drive (you'd lose play history and ratings though, but may not be an issue for videos and podcasts).

  • How to ensure the link between iTunes Library itl file and Music Folder residing on a different drive?

I'm planning to move my Music Library from a PC to Mac.  Both running iTunes 10.
On the PC (Win XP) the iTues folder did not move from My Music folder when music (and videos, books, etc) were moved to a different drive on the PC.  iTunes runs ok, but the itl, xml and itdb files remain in the My Music Folder.
When I transfer the music (folder and all other contents) to the Mac, and then the itl, xml, itdb files into the new Music>iTunes folder will they still be "linked" or will I need to rebuild the itl from scratch?
Is there a way to ensure that the itl and music files themselves transfer to the Mac and remain linked once iTunes is launched?
    thanks

    Making a split library portable
Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
If the iTunes folder contains the iTunes Media folder as above then the iTunes folder can be moved to a new location/drive/computer without breaking the file references. Although it is possible to migrate a split library from one system to another, the media folder must end up at precisely the same drive letter & path on the target system. This is feasible when moving between Windows systems, possibly feasible moving between Macs, but definitely impossible when moving PC to Mac or vice versa.
Assume the media folder on the external drive is called ..\<Parent>\<Media> and the library files are in the usual place of <Profile's Music>\iTunes.
You need to copy the library files and Album Artwork folder into the <Parent> folder, then use the hold-down-shift-when-starting-iTunes method (hold down option for Macs) to open the copy of the database that you've made in the <Parent> folder.
Once this library has been opened and tested there are a few changes you can make so that it conforms to the standard layout. When iTunes opens it uses the folder name where the database is located as the window name so if the <Parent> folder isn't called iTunes then neither will be the main iTunes window. Close iTunes, rename <Parent> as iTunes and use the hold-down-shift-when-starting-iTunes method to open iTunes again. If <Parent> is the root of the drive, make a new folder called iTunes and move the library files, Album Artwork & <Media> folders into the new iTunes folder instead. Start iTunes, then check under Edit > Preferences > Advanced that the media folder location has been correctly updated and edit if necessary.
You may also want to correct the media folder name. Having applied the fix above, if it was necessary, close iTunes then rename the <Media> folder as iTunes Media. Start iTunes and again check under Edit > Preferences > Advanced that the media folder location has been correctly updated and edit if necessary.
Congratulations, your library is now fully portable and you can connect your external drive to any computer running the same build of iTunes, Mac or PC, in order to work with it. Don't forget to deauthorise the old computer if you won't need to access protected content on it again.

  • Problems with linking to private content?

Soon after we moved our publically-accessible content into the Public Site Manager, the links to our private content stopped working. Even repeating the "Copy Link" in iTunes does not result in a link that works. I've already posted about our as of yet unsolved problem in this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15613873
I was wondering if anyone else in the community has had a similar problem? We have an old-style Apple-host iTunes U store, I don't know if that has been a factor or not.

The problem got fixed with no action on our part, and no explanation from Apple as to what had gone wrong or what fix was performed. The discussion has taken a few hops, ending up here:

Hopefully your problem with be resolved quickly, and with more transparency.

  • Purchased iTunes Content Getting Sorted Wrong

I'm having a bit of a problem recently with my purchased iTunes content. I recently got a MacMini, and when I was trying to load my iTunes content from a external hard drive I noticed around 20 random television episodes I purchased through the iTunes store were loaded under the Movies tab in iTunes and they lost all their meta sorting details. I tried adding the correct meta data to the affected episodes, and tried reloading them, but they keep moving back to the Movies tab with no meta data.
I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 (was running 10.6.7 at the time of the move) and iTunes 10.3.1.

The policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage."
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on any of the links on this page you'll find a space at the bottom to email your query: iTMS Customer Service

  • Using 1 External HDD to store iTunes content AND Time Machine Backup

Ok, I don't know a great deal about external hard drives but from what I've read, I'm hoping there's an option to use a 2TB hard drive to store my iTunes content, and as a Time Machine hard drive for backing up. Is this at all possible?
I have an iMac and a MacBook (therefore this would be quite beneficial). If I attach a 2TB hard drive to an AirPort Extreme Base station can I use Time Machine on BOTH computers, linked wirelessly to the one hard drive?
Is it just a matter of partitioning, say, 500GB for storage and the rest (1.5TB) for Time Machine?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ry

The best way is to partition the drive - one for your iTunes and one for TM backups.
Using a drive connected to an AEBS for TM backups is not supported, but it can be done. Use Airport Utility to set up the TM drive and turn on File Sharing. You will have to "mount" the shared drive before you can use it with TM. Same with the partition you would use for iTunes.

  • ITunes software won't open with link to iTunes U

Our campus uses Blackboard to authenticate users into iTunes U. Until now, we haven't had any trouble with users being able to access their content in iTunes U.
We have one user who clicks the link to iTunes U, and the iTunes software does not open, and our school's iTunes U is not loaded. As this is the only way for our users to access iTunes U, that's a problem.
I don't think it's the Blackboard Building Block we're using that is causing the problem -- nobody else seems to be having any trouble. I've asked the user to try some other iTunes links that would pop open iTunes, to see if the same problem happens.
    The user is using Firefox.
    Any suggestions?

    blepharisma,
Have you found a solution to this issue?

  • ITunes content on my NAS syncs very slowly

I have my itunes content on a link station duo. I can pay music and movies just fine but syncing takes forever. Any ideas?

When you removed and reinstalled iTunes, did you follow the steps in the support document? Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8  If not, that can create its own set of problems. What kind of anti-virus software are you using on the computer? Have you tried to disable the firewall and anti-virus software? Do you have a passcode on the device? If so, do you unlock the phone before you attempt to sync? Others have reported this helps. You say the iPad has started to display this behavior. Have you done anything different to it or the laptop just prior to this starting? Are you logged into the computer as an administrator?
