Links within Mail messages

Any inbox message which contains a link displays a ghost over the top of the link address .  It's a tiny, shimmering picture of the web page that it links to.  It's just big enough to cover the link, but not big enough to be able to read anything on the little web page that is displayed.

Mail 6.0 has been acting weird on me as well.  Whenever I have a message from something with a link involved, it gets somewhat distorted. I posted a similar discussion as well.  The Apple genius told me it has to do something with the software.  When I had Lion, I never had any problems.  He sent my photo to the engineers so I'm waiting on them.

  • Suddenly blue links in Mail message no longer open

Assisting an elderly relative. He has a six year old iMac running Tiger. Uses Apple Mail
He has two mail accounts. One from his ISP (POP) and an IMAP account for his AOL mail. The latter is the account into which most of his messages come.
Suddenly last week he finds that hyperlinks in any mail message no longer open. Formerly he clicked on the blue link and the link opened in Safari.
Now nothing happens when he clicks on a blue link which has been included in a mail message. Control clicking on the link also does not work.
What might have gone wrong and how do we fix this?
(His browser is working perfectly ; links on a web page open)

    Hi Barbara,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Also, Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.

  • I use AOL mail and often the links within the messages do not work. How can I enable them globally or within a specific message?

    above should explain the issue

Just above the textarea that you use to enter the message text there is usually a button bar with buttons to add text formatting like Bold and Italic.<br />
That toolbar may also have a button to turn a text link into a clickable hyperlink (look for a chain like button).<br />
You can select the text and click that button to turn the link into a clickable hyperlink.<br />
If you can't find the button then hover them all to check the tooltip of each.

  • Links from Mail and other apps don't go to open copy of Firefox but attempt to open a second copy, so I get "A copy of Firefox is already open," FF 22, OS10.8.4

Links from within Firefox windows open new tab, but links within Mail, MSWord, and other apps attempt to open another copy of Firefox, and I get the "Close Firefox: A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time." This just started happening less than a week ago. I don't know when FF updated to version 22.0.

My problem seems to be fixed--I cannot reproduce it now, though it had been consistently happening for the past 3-4 days. The suggestions above do not seem to apply in any case: I do not want to open another instance of Firefox but simply to connect with the one that is already running; and I do not seem to have a .parentlock file.
If the problem returns, I'll be back. Meanwhile, thanks for the suggestions.

  • Links in Mail not opening

Links in Mail messages are not opening. I switched to Firefox and they open but not in Safari, which I prefer. What could the problem be?

It is as you said, firefox incompatibility with its latest update.
    Does reinstalling firefox help?
I do recommend launching the links using safari so we can isolate it to just firefox alone

  • Clicking links in a message

when i got my phone, it would automatically highlight a link within a message, now it won't!  Please help. Is there any way for me to reset this function or change it?   HEELLLPPP!!!

Have you upgraded the OS on the device?
First, with the BlackBerry device powered ON, remove the battery a few seconds and then reinsert the battery to reboot.
If still no links look at Blackberry Messenger > Options >“Group Messages in Conversation = Yes” rather than No.

  • In FF 34.0.5 I use to be able to click on a link within an e-mail and the link would open in a new tab; it now opens in the same tab; how can i change it back?

I'm using FF 34.0.5 (I like it). I use to be able to right click on a link, within an e-mail, and the link would open in a new tab. Now when I click on the link it opens in the same tab replacing my e-mail.
Example - a friend sends me an e-mail containing a link to a web site he thinks I'd like. I click on the link and go to the web site and then go back to the e-mail tab and reply to him. Now, when clicking that link, my e-mail disappears and is replaced by the new site.
How can I fix this? When this happened once before I was told to change the 'value' for a specific 'preference name' through the about:config page.
Can anyone help jog my memory?
    Thanks!

Is this about clicking a link in an external program?
You can check this pref on the about:config page for external links.
    * browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external (-1)
If this pref has the default value -1 then browser.link.open_newwindow is used.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.link.open_newwindow
    *1: current tab; 2:new window; 3:new tab;
You can open the <b>about:config</b> page via the location/address bar.
You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

    HI Ana ...
I had FB working again two days ago, and yesterday in mid-serve Safari just "couldn't find the server" once more...
    That's a different issue...
First, if you can just use English, open System Preferences > Language & Text then select the Language tab. Drag English to the top of the list then restart your Mac.
Now for the server issue. Try using Open DNS. That shold help the "couldn't find the server" issue...
Open System Preferences / Preferences then select the Network tab. Click the Advanced tab then click the DNS tab.
    Click +
Enter these numbers exactly as you see them here.
    208.67.222.222
    Click +
    208.67.220.220
    Then click OK.
Try accessing Facebook on Safari now.

  • Accessing URL of links in HTML e-mail message via Services

I'm trying to write a simple service (in Automator) so that when I right-click on a URL, I can send that URL directly to my Instapaper account (rather than opening the link in a browser, and then clicking my bookmarklet to save to Instapaper.)  I have it working for bare URLs included in the text, but I'd like to also be able to do it for hyperlinks in HTML-formatted Mail messages.  Is there a way in Automator to access the underlying URL for a link, rather than the displayed link text?  Clearly some of the built-in items in Mail's context menu (e.g. Open Link, Copy Link) do that, but I can't see how to get access to the URL in Automator.
Thanks in advance for your help with this,
    Eric

    Hi Scott,
"Unapealing" it is, but that doesn't get it very high on the long requirements list.
To make it more appealing to reward points is higher up there and I think everyone would love to see that.
Nevertheless I added it to the list.
    Best, Mark.
P.S. On one hand I don't care about points, on the other I get teased in the office when I am not in the top ten, although with all this great contributions from you guys and girls, I am letting go of that goal. So don't bother.

How can I attach a pdf file to outgoing mail without in opening up within the message?

You can use the Share button on Preview's toolbar. Choosing Email pops open Mail with the PDF already iconified as an attachment. If it doesn't behave this nicely for you, select the PDF in Mail and choose the right contextual menu, where you will find View as Icon. I also have Send Windows-Friendly attachments enabled.

Open Safari. From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the General tab.
Select Safari from the pop up menu next to:  Default web browser
If that doesn't help, launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
    Click:  Verify Disk Permissions
Restart your Mac when it's finished.
    Try Mail.

  • Why does Mail seize when I try to open a link in a message?

New iPhone 5.  Mail receives and sends messages without problem.  BUT when I click on a link in a message, the app seizes.  No problem closing down and restarting the app, but no progress with opening links.

No answers to this question.  Cleared the problem by removing the mail account and resetting the network settings.  When the phone booted again, set up the mail account and now all is well.
