Links within PDF document open linked PDF documents, but seem to replace original document rather than as additional documents.

Hello good people of the Adobe Community!  I have a user of Adobe Reader XI that is having the following problem:
She is viewing, what we will call, the "main document," and this document has many links to other PDF documents.  When she clicks on one of the links, the main document gets replaced by the new document.  She then needs to re-open the main document to view it again.  This happens with every link she clicks.  I worked with the document in Reader XI and am able to open every link as an additional document, thus allowing me to immediately view both the main document and the new document.
My questions are:
Is there some setting in her Reader that I do not have turned on/off, which is why she is having this issue and I am not?
If not, then why is the user experiencing this "replacement" of the main document?
How do I help her resolve this issue?
Thank you for your time and attention.
Ben

I don't know if there is any way to configure this in the Reader preferences.
However, it can be decided in the document itself.  I just created a test document (using Acrobat DC) with two links:
one to open in the same window
on the open in a new window
Both links do what I selected:
one opened in the same Reader window (replacing the original document)
the other one opened a new Reader window
When creating the links there was actually a third option: Window set by user preferences.  However, I cannot seem to find such a user preference in Adobe Acrobat Reader.  The default (in my case) seems to be to open in the same Reader window.

  • New tabs open Google homepage correctly but with cursor in text box rather than search box.

    I have Google as my home page. When I open Firefox 7.0.1 the Google home page opens correctly with the cursor in the search box. I have set new tabs to also open in the home page. New tabs do open in Google but with the cursor in the text box rather than the search box. As I recall, this didn't happen before upgrading to 7.0.1 (actually, I think that I was using a tab configuration plug-in that may have been nuked in the Firefox update). This is driving me crazy, is there a solution for 7.0.1?

    Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

    In Firefox Options / Privacy be sure "Remember download history" is checked. To see all of the options on that panel, "Firefox will" must be set to "Use custom settings for history".
    To find your OS information, on your Windows desktop, right-click the My Computer icon, choose Properties, under System on that small window is info about your OS.

    I want to place an image in my InDesign document that can work with an address like this (\Resources\Thumb) rather than this (C:\Users\JSmith\Desktop\InDesign thumbnail Test\001\Resources\Thumb) is this possible? In a nutshell I want to point the link to an image in a directory that uses just part of the address.

    I know this is something you can do in Maya with linked files. I guess InDesign just isn't there yet.
    MW Design -  Yeah I think "Relative paths" is the right term! I want to create a Layout with an image in the center of the page - and then duplicate my folder structure with that file. With that, I want to replace the Linked image file with a diferent image file of the same name. In effect having multiple files of the same layout with different images.  I hope that made sense.

  • How to hide prompts panel for WebI documents opened in PDF via openDocument

    I am linking to a WebI document via openDocument call with sOutputFormat=P. The report opens in PDF format but within another browser window with top panel and left prompts panel.  I tried to set different Web Intelligence Interactive settings in CMC to hide the left prompts panel but to no avail.  We are linking to this WebI report from an Xcelsius dashboard via openDocument and are passing parameters so that the user doesn't have to interact with the report.  Once the results are displayed, user should not be allowed to either Refresh the report or see the parameter panel in the left pane.  Is this possible either via CMC security settings or viewer customization?

    Thanks, posted. The forum was a bit hard to find

  • Suddenly double-clicking on a PDF document opens the Acrobat application but the document does not load.

         Up until today I had no problem opening a PDF document that I have already saved by double-clicking on it.  Now when I do that, my Acrobat application opens, but the PDF document does not.  I need to use File/ Open to select the document I want to see, or I need to right mouse click on the PDF document and choose “Open with”.  I had this once before and I had help to resolve this, but I am using Acrobat 7 Professional and since it is not supported, I can’t get help when I call Support.

    Sounds like a Windows problem. Try the right click and then select the ALWAYS open with feature. That is supposed to fix the link. If that does not work, open the file type menu under the TOOLS>Folder Options (XP view, may be other in VISTA). If you select advanced under PDF, you should get a link under the open>edit something like "c:\adobeapp\acrobat 5.0\Acrobat\Acrobat.exe" "%1". The comment you make sounds like the %1 or the quotes are missing. Bill

  • When exporting Captivate 5 project as pdf, cannot open linked files (which are also pdfs)

    I am a Captivate novice, using version 5 on Mac. I am thrilled that my project can be published as a pdf. Everything works great except the interactive buttons, which are supposed to open various small pdfs. I placed the linked documents in the same folder with captivate project. I used just the filename of the document as the link. I can open the links with no problem when I open the SWF from firefox, but when I try to open them from my exported PDF (with Acrobat 9 pro), no luck. This is really bumming me out, because being able to hand the customer an interactive PDF is cool. I could just duplicate the same effect in Acrobat Pro Extended, but I find the Captivate workspace much faster and easier than creating interactivity with Acrobat. Plus, it is so cool to add the audio and animated effects in Captivate. Not so easy in Acrobat. Help??!?! Thank you.

    Thanks for the update! No pressure, but I'm using the trial version while I decide if Captivate will be the solution I need to create these multimedia pdfs. Is there any sort of timeframe on the resolution of the issue I posted? Should I expect to wait until Captivate 6, or should I expect an update to 5 to solve the problem? Just need to know how to move forward. I apologize in advance if I am out of line for asking timeframe questions. I'm new to support forums. I  never posted before because I was always able to get answers by researching discussions. Your reply is so helpful to me because I can barely afford the $800 for Cap 5. If it can't do what I need it to do, I will save the money and stick with creating interactivity in PDFs through Acrobat's brute force (but reliable) methods...but Captivate is SO COOL...oh woe.

  • Forcing link in one web based PDF to open link to another PDF in new browser window

    We have created a form using LiveCycle Designer ES2.  The form is found on our website and is used by faculty to submit proposal information to our office.  Depending upon the answers to questions in the form if they say yes we had a link to another form that we would like them to complete and submit with the original PDF that they are working on.  The problem that we are having is that when they click on the form it opens the new PDF and all the data that they had entered in the original PDF is gone once the new form opens up.  Is there a way to force the new PDF via the use of some scripting that can go along with the link, or via the use of a button that can force the new form to open in a new browser window?  It is impractical for us to expect 1500 faculty members to change their browser settings to open new PDF's in a new window.  We have removed the links for now and have just put in text that says if they select yes they need to go out and complete the additional form.
    The form we are using can be found here: http://spo.usu.edu/files/uploads/SP-01.pdf
    The first three questions on page two where we reference the other forms is where we would like to be able to add the links to the new forms and have them open in a new browser window.  When the form is downloaded and opened in Adobe Acrobat/Reader the links functioned correctly, it just did not function properly when it opens in a browser.
    Thank you in advance for any assistance you can offer in regards to this issue.

    I used a button, removed the border/fill properties and underlined the caption to look like a URL.
    The click event is...
    // form1.page1.subform1.urlBtn::click - (JavaScript, client)
    app.launchURL("http://spo.usu.edu/files/uploads/SP-01.pdf",true);
    The PDF will open in a new window or tab, depending upon the browser configuration.

  • Link Item Style to open a PDF hangs if opened in IE in 30 seconds

    Hi,
    I am using Jdeveloper version 9.0.3.
    I have a page in which, I have an advanced table, in which there is a column, with item style - link.
    On the link item there is a PPR event and it should open a PDF file, residing on the server.
    I am using java code to open the PDF file.
    In Internet Explorer, the link doesnt work, infact the Explorer hangs and the user has to exit the window.
    This doesnt happen in Firefox. However, this is critical as , use of firefox is not allowed, and the users have to ultimately use IE.
    Below is the java code for opening the PDF file from the server:
    public void downloadFileFromServer(OAPageContext pageContext, String file_name_with_path, String file_name_with_ext)
    HttpServletResponse response = (HttpServletResponse) pageContext.getRenderingContext().getServletResponse();

    if (!fileToDownload.exists()){
    throw new OAException("File does not exist.");
    if (!fileToDownload.canRead()){
    throw new OAException("Not Able to read the file.");
    String fileType = getMimeType(file_name_with_ext);
    response.setContentType(fileType);
    response.setContentLength((int)fileToDownload.length());
    response.setHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=\"" + file_name_with_ext + "\"");
    InputStream in = null;
    ServletOutputStream outs = null;
    try{
    outs = response.getOutputStream();
    in = new BufferedInputStream(new FileInputStream(fileToDownload));
    int ch;
    while ((ch = in.read()) != -1){
    outs.write(ch);
    }catch (IOException e){
    e.printStackTrace();
    }finally{

    public String getMimeType(String s)
    int i = s.lastIndexOf(".");

    Hi Kristofer,
    We did look at the possibility for using messageDownload bean instead of a link, but we do not want to store the file as a LOB.
    The file needs to be stored in the server location.
    Any clue as to why the file opened in the browser ( on clicking on the link) hangs and this is happening only in IE.
    Thanks,

  • VideoPlayer.aspx page--how to add an element on page that allows to "Link to a Document" rather than "Add New Document"

    Hi All,
    We have SharePoint 2013 and are setting up a Video Library. The Video Player page is great, but rather than adding documents to this page, and have them go into a folder called "Additional Content" we would like to add an element to the page that
    would allow us to link to documents already on SharePoint so if something gets updated, then we don't have to worry about uploading documents in both places. However, because this is a Document Set, if I add a web part to the page (Content Query in this case)
    and then filter documents to the content query--it applies the content query and its filter to every single video's video player page.
    Anyone know of a way around this?

    Hi,
    According to your description, you might want to enable users add the links to documents in SharePoint Libraries in the “videoplayerpage.aspx”.
    The available OOTB features won’t be capable of your requirement, a possible workaround is that we can use JavaScript with JavaScript Client Object Model to achieve it programmatically.
    With JavaScript, we will be able to generate the controls needed in the “videoplayerpage.aspx” to provide users the abilities to get a link to a file in a SharePoint Library and
    display all the selected links in the current page;
    With JavaScript Client Object Model, we can save/read/update the related links of different video files in an extra list based on the ID of a video file. Also, it will enable us
    to query all the documents in all libraries in the current site.
    More information about JavaScript Client Object Model:

    modify the HTML source of a page using JavaScript:

    It won't be an easy job to make all these things working together, therefore, a fact you might want to take into consideration is that more time and effort would be required to
    make it works.
    Feel free to reply if there any question about my suggestion.

  • Hyperlink a word in one pdf to open another pdf on a mac?

    Hi, I have been trying to find a program or app on my mac that will enable me to click on a word in one pdf file from my documents which would then open another pdf file in my documents.  I can't seem to be able to do it on preview via the hyperlink or adobe reader, can anyone help? With Adobe Acrobat you can add links.

    You can insert hyper-links in PDFs in Preview by clicking on Tools > Annotate > Add Link. The key is to point the link at the local file. The link should start with "file://" followed by the complete path to the file you want to open (e.g.: /Users/Your_Account/Documents/whatsitsname.pdf). In other words, the complete link will be: "file:///Users/Your_Account/Documents/whatsitsname.pdf".

  • Links in email won't open. When I click on a link, it goes to open tabs in FF, but the new link doesn't open.

    When I get a link sent in an email, the link no longer opens when I click on it. When I click on the link, Firefox and the open internet tabs appear on my screen, but the new link does not open. I must manually copy the link, then paste it in the address bar to get it to open.

    I have the same problem with FF 3.6.13, and Mac OS 10.6.5.
    Clicking links in Mail opens FF, but does not open the URL. Safari has no problems when I reset it as my default browser. The problem seems to develop over time. At first, links open fine, but then all of a sudden they won't.
    My remedy has been to reinstall FF, but I've had to do it twice in the last couple of weeks, which is getting a bit annoying.
    I have not experienced the problem on either of my two older Macs (running 10.4, and 10.5).
