Linksys e900 and comcast xfinity internet speed

I just recently purchased comcast internet today and self installation kit that came with the modem and all..... got it all set up no problems activated did speedtest directly from cable modem to laptop computer wired and was getting 10mbps down and 3mbps up well went out and bought a linksys e900 wireless router.... connected it no problems... however my laptop wirelessly and phones connected to the router with speedtest is only getting 300kbps down average!!! but the upload is still 3mbps.... is there something im doing wrong? any help is appreciated!

The above is not an entirely accurate statement.  What I can says is... 'it depends'.  Depends on your brand of router and brand of WiFi adapter.  I now use a Netgear WNDR3400v2 router with a Linksys AE1000 USB adapter on my Toshiba Satellite laptop.  With WMM disabled in the router, I can connect at 300 Mbps and transfer wirelessly to my downstairs computer at a max rate of 82.5Mbps.  Why only 82.5Mbps?  Well the router and computer downstairs only have 100Mbps LAN connections.  With WMM enabled my connection link is still 300Mbps but my speed is reduced, but not by much. Go figure.  Comcast speed is perfect at about 24Mbps with WMM disabled, only 12-14Mbps with WMM enabled.  And yes it is an N connection all the time.
Using the internal WiFi adapter, Intel 5100 b/g/n I can only get a connection of 9-14Mpbs.  That's right only 14Mbps with all the latest drivers installed.  Comcast speed is only about 7Mbps using the internal WlFi adapter.  WMM enabled or disabled, no difference.
So, it depends.  I suggest trying a cheap external USB adapter like the above.  Only $14 on eBay.

  • I have 3 computers and 1 has internet speed around 10 mps, the other 2 have 20mps, why?

When I run a Speed Test with all my devices I get 20+mpbs down and 2+mpbs up on all devices except my MacPro desktop computer which reads less tha 10mpbs down but 22+mpbs up. Does anyone have any Ideas?

Access to Internet is Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem and Airport Router. I only have minimum speed with my MacPro. It has Processor  2 x 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 10 GB RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB. The Spped Test with this computer is better today @ 14.08Mbps download and 2.27Mbps upload. My two other computers are only Dual-Core and less RAM and my iPhone 4s all get speeds above 20Mbps download and the same 2.2Mbps upload. This is consistent through out my house.

  • WRT54g2 and comcast modem, internet dropouts, losing my mind.

Title of the post sums it up. I've literally spent hours and hours on the phone with linksys tech support. I've replaced the modem once and the problem is identical.
Basically, I get everything setup and it works fine for a period of time, usually a few days. Then, internet gets really slow before it stops working altogether.
When I lose internet connection however my home network is still functioning. My computers still talk to each other and I can usually still stream content to my PS3. Even my utorrent downloads will continue seeding and downloading.
When it internet stops working I power cycle the router and it works again. But every time I do that the period of time that it functions properly gets shorter and shorter, to the point where I will power cycle it and within 5 minutes I lose internet.
Firmware is up to date, 1.5.01. Wireless network is secured. I do not experience any dropouts when the either computer is wired directly to the modem.
I have a W7 laptop on wireless, wired W7 desktop, and a wireless PS3 on the network. And recently I began sharing my wireless with my neighbor. But I've had issues long before that.
After some research, I came across this thread.
    http://homecommunity.cisco.com/t5/Wireless-Routers/I-need-to-reconfigure-my-WRT54G2-to-work-with-Com...
Basically setting the the router ip to 192.168.2.1 instead of 1.1 and enabling mac address clone.
This actually helped and I thought my internet woes were over. But at the time I was in between desktop PCs (building one to replace my old Dell).
After a couple days of my new desktop on the network my old problems began again. Could utorrent be causing any issue because I notice it seems to get worse when my desktop is downloading, or maybe not it just seems that way.
There have been times where the computer gave an ip address conflict message. I've tried static ip but have not been able to get that to work probably due to something I've been missing in the process. I'd prefer not to have to resort to static ip because I take my laptop to work and for travel and would prefer not to have be going back and forth on my settings. And I would like guests to be able to come over with their laptop and just quickly log on and not have to change their ip.
So I'm at a loss, not sure what else to try. This is also the 2nd brand of modem I tried, the first was a dlink that I just returned right away because I thought it was faulty.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks.

MTU is the Maximum Transmission Unit. It specifies the largest packet size permitted for Internet transmission. Keep the default setting, Auto, to have the Router select the best MTU for your Internet connection. To specify a MTU size, select Manual, and enter the value desired (default is 1400).  You should leave this value in the 1200 to 1500 range.
The default value is 100. Enter a value between 1 and 65,535 milliseconds. The Beacon Interval value indicates the frequency interval of the beacon. A beacon is a packet broadcast by the Router to synchronize the wireless network.
This value should remain at its default setting of 2347. The range is 0-2347 bytes.
<script type="text/javascript">// Capture(hwireless.phase11) // </script> Should you encounter inconsistent data flow, only minor modifications are recommended. If a network packet is smaller than the preset RTS threshold size, the RTS/CTS mechanism will not be enabled. The Router sends Request to Send (RTS) frames to a particular receiving station and negotiates the sending of a data frame. After receiving an RTS, the wireless station responds with a Clear to Send (CTS) frame to acknowledge the right to begin transmission.
This value should remain at its default setting of 2346. The range is 256-2346 bytes. It specifies the maximum size for a packet before data is fragmented into multiple packets. If you experience a high packet error rate, you may slightly increase the Fragmentation Threshold. Setting the Fragmentation Threshold too low may result in poor network performance. Only minor modifications of this value are recommended.

  • Linksys WRVS4400N V1.1.13 slows down Internet speed by 50%

    Hi,
Recently I upgraded my Internet speed at the ISP from 10Mbps to 25Mbps and the problem is that I am measuring only 15Mbps using speedtest.net.
On the day when the tech came out to install the new DSL modem, he noticed the difference and as part of troubleshooting, he bypassed the Linksys router and voila the net speed measured 25Mbps using speedtest.net.
So, why my Linksys WRVS4400N V1.1.13 acts like a bottleneck in this case? I didn't have this problem at the speed of 10Mbps. The upload speed is OK, it is 5Mbs with or without the DSL modem.
Does someone have any idea how to troubleshoot this problem?

    Hi Tom,
Thanks for the tipp on disabling the IPS, I did it and the speedtest.net test resulted in 21Mbps.
So, it is already a great improvement.
It is interesting though, that on the IPS page of the router, all four protocols were disabled (http, ftp, telnet and rpc), so I am not sure if it was doing anything useful anyway. Am I right?
Since the tech from my ISP was using speedtest.net for testing and did get 25Mbps, I figured that it should work for me too. I am not sure if our ISP has a website for the same purpose.
In order to eliminate any bugs I was considering upgrading the firmware on my router, but I am not sure which firmware I should use, it seems to me that there are two sets of firmwares available for my router one with VPN version 1.xx the other one is VPN ver. 2.xxx
The model# of my router is WRVS4400N v1.1  but I am not sure whether to upgrade to one or the other VPN version is up to me or the VPN version range is already set in my router and I cannot upgrade to 2 from 1 in case I have VPN v1. (How can I tell which version of VPN I have on my router?)
8 hours later I added this text:
I did another test on speedtest.net and at this time I got 24.35Mbps, so you were right, speedtest.net won't give you a reliable speed value if you just run it once and you want to make a decision based on that. (Btw., I contacted our ISP, they don't have a net speed measuring website within their own network.)
So, I am done with the speed problem thanks to your right on target suggestion, but could you please, answer my other two questions:
    - Was the IPS in my router doing anything usefull to me since all 4 protocolls were disabled - until now?
    - About the firmware dilemma.
    Thanks.

  • Absurdly slow internet speeds and often unable to ...

I'm used to getting around 13 Mbps Internet speeds from BT.
In the last few days, although the speed tests show similar results (assuming I can actually get online to test them), Internet browsing has become painfully slow, with many pages simply not loading at all.
I've called BT, and been through some tests with them, and they assure me that everything is fine, and that my Internet speeds are as high as ever.
I've also done some hunting around on google, and tried using open DNS settings, but to no avail. It's especially hard to upload data, and it's almost impossible to send email.
Occasionally, if I turn on my Mac after a longish break, I can get online easily, and send e-mail for a few minutes, then the problem returns.
BT insist that there's nothing wrong with the line, but the fact that the problem affects both my Mac and my iPad suggests that the problem is not with my computer.
Indeed, I'm now in the local pub, and everything is working just fine.
I've been through all the usual things - checking location of Homehub (even though it was absolutely fine for 18 months in its current location), changed the ADSL micro-filter, changed the wireless channel, etc, and to no avail.
    What else can anyone suggest?
    Thank you.

So, the first time I did this speed-test was on my return home, when everything was working fine again.

  • IPhone 3gs not Connecting to Linksys E900

    Hi,
We have 3 iphones in our house and all of them are iPhone 3gs. We also have a Macbook and an iPad-2. I got a new router installed yesterday - Cisco Linksys E900. After the internet connection service provider has configured the router, we are able to access internet on Macbook and also iPad-2. But we are unable to access internet/wifi through our phones.
    We have tried:
    1. Resetting Network Settings.
    2. Changing the Wifi settings to manual and choosing a different channel (tried Channel# 1, Channel# 6 and Channel# 11).
It is very surprising and frustrating that iPad is able to access Wifi but iPhones are not able to.
It is detecting Wifi but when I tap on it, it says "unable to connect to the network". When I tried to check IP address etc on iPhone, it is all blank.
I am sure this has got something to do with iPhone and Router configuration only. I tried reaching out to Apple and also to our service provider but they all threw their hands up, puzzled.
Can anyone please share how do I resolve this.

  • Verizon is Capping Internet Speed/Service for "Unlimited" Customers

Some recent news has been brought to my attention by Verizon Wireless' customer service department, and I think that given the severity of Verizon Wireless’ continued breach of contract to Internet customers, this matter should be brought to everyone else's attention as well.
I originally purchased a Verizon Wireless USB Internet Card in 2007. I was offered a plan that entitled me to an “Unlimited Internet Usage Allowance”. I kept the same wireless Internet device for two years and never acquired any issues or concerns. On January 20th, 2010, I went into a Verizon store and was offered a free upgrade to the new MiFi Mobile HotSpot. I was told that I could test the product for 30 days to make sure that it worked to my standards and my Internet needs. It worked perfectly. I used it for multiple computers in my home, as well as work and travel.
My problem with the Verizon MiFi began on October 21st, 2010 when my Internet suddenly became extremely slow and unable to access any web pages without minutes of waiting. I continued to call customer service and go into the Verizon stores throughout the month in hopes that someone could find a ‘glitch’ and solve my issue of what soon became No Internet access. I did all this with patience and good faith, as I have continued to pay $60 a month for “High speed 3G” service. Two weeks ago, I took the MiFi device into the store and requested a new device since it became entirely defective. My new device arrived in the mail and I have still spent the last week going through the ring-around circus of Tech support and the only logic they can come up with is, "Either the device is defective or my computer is too old."  This is not the case, as I recently purchased a new laptop.
What I discovered was that Verizon neglected to inform me for the past two months that I had gone over my "undisclosed usage threshold" (Even though I pay for Unlimited Allowance) and now my internet speed has been capped and I am unable to access the Internet. I spent 4 hours on the phone yesterday and weaved my way into a small department called "AIT" which is supposedly a new sub-contracted company that is suppose to help negotiate my "situation". They of course are closed, and my numerous voice mails will most likely never be returned.
At this point, I am still paying for something that does not work, and Verizon has taken it upon themselves to decide "how often" I can use the internet. This was not disclosed to me in my contract that I signed in Jan 2010, when I continued my Wireless plan for "unlimited usage allowance."
I want everyone to be aware of this, before they head out this holiday season and spend hundreds of dollars on a Verizon Wireless Internet Device, and eventually will have to deal with the same nonsense I'm currently going through right now!

I started with one of the few unlimited plans back in 2008- They kept telling me to "hang on to it- cause it won't be around for long!" So I did and when I upgraded my device- everything worked great for 7 months. I started using it more frequently as a hot spot for more than one computer, we're talking email, web browsing and paying bills- Not Xbox360 for 24 hours a day or fownloading 10 videos a day!? I don't even know how to do that!?!
And the first month we went over- we got capped! Now it runs at about a quarter of the speed. Which was never disclosed to me. And to think- they market this MiFi 2200 as a hotspot for up to 5 computers??? I can only imagine how quickly people are being capped.

  • Internet speed measurement

    Hallo All
I need a software or website that i can use to monitor and determine
    [1] internet speed
[2] bandwidth form one point to another.
    I will appreciate your reply.
    Thanks

    If your just wanting to test your connection speed one of the listed sites will work fine. But if you want to set your router up to use IP/SLA to keep track of the connection between yourself and your service provider, consider using the built in IP/SLA feature in IOS. Below is an example;
    RouterB(config)# rtr 3
RouterB(config-rtr)# type pathEcho protocol ipIcmpEcho ISP
    RouterB(config-rtr)# frequency 10
    RouterB(config-rtr)# lives-of-history-kept 5
    RouterB(config-rtr)# buckets-of-history-kept 3
    RouterB(config-rtr)# filter-for-history all
    RouterB(config-rtr)# exit
    RouterB(config)# rtr schedule 3 life 25
    RouterB(config)# exit

  • Internet Speed Widget?

I find my internet slows on occasion and I would like a way of telling, preferably a Widget, but I cannot find one on the Apple website. Is there a simple widget that tells you your download/upload speeds, and preferably in MBs??
    Thanks.

As stated the widget you offered will not show internet speeds but I emailed them to ask about what I was looking for and if they might create one anyway? I'll post their reply if useful.
I am using iStat Pro and it shows internet speeds in its Network section. Check the settings ('i" in upper-left corner). (I use the vertical display.)

  • DSL internet speed

I am starting to think that Verizon is Throttling down our Internet speed. I have checked with friends around our area about  slow Internet speeds ( dial up or slower ) Every time we contact Verizon our speed goes back up only to slow back down again in a day or two. We only have DSL available and we pay for the fastest speed available to us.
A am collecting information on this before I go to my state representatives and public utility commission.

YES we have been around and around with people that we can hardly understand. We unplugged and turned off , reset and all the other things from the verizon script on many occasions   We have been told that our modem/router was outdated and received a updated one. The speed picks up and then back down to a craw in a few days. I have ask around and it IS a common problem but not all at the same time. We are starting that Verizon is charging us for the higher speeds and throttling the Internet speed down. We have contacted our State Representative at a function  last week and her staff will contact the PUC to find out some awnsers for us. We live in a rural area and customer service from many businesses is nonexsistance

  • EA6500 and Comcast Speed (Wired)

I have been reading all the different messages about this router and speed issues.  I have tried numerous things to fix this but the only one that really works is putting back my old Linksys E4200.
It really does look like there is a firmware issue that causes the speed to max out at 4 to 5 Mbps with a Comcast/Xfinity modem.  With the E4200 I am seeing the speeds I expect of 25 to 29 Mbps download.
I updated the router to the latest firmware from March and just tried it and it still is not working correctly.  I don't know whether to return the router to BestBuy and get my 200 back or wait and hope that it gets fixed.
If someone from Linksys monitors these forums would it be possible to indicate that you know of the problem and are working on a solution or that it is a ways off and won't be touched until the next round of routers come out.
    Thank you,
    Bob

Are you experiencing the issue when wired to the router? You’ve mentioned that using the E4200 router you are getting the expected speed as well as you’ve already updated the firmware to the latest, the router itself might be faulty. How about try adjusting the MTU setting in the router and see if it will make a difference with the speed. For instructions, you may refer to the following links: What is MTU and How to Change the MTU Size & Determining and setting up the correct MTU size. MTU setting can be found under Connectivity -> Internet Settings in the linksys smart wifi page. If there’s still no changes with the speed after changing the MTU size, the router may be faulty.

  • About download speed cut on Linksys E900

    Hello.
    I got a Linksys E900 router and i think i have a problem.
I am on a PPoE connection and when i connect directly to the internet i get this results:
    http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/2925884998
    http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/2925894328
But, if i connect through the router, the speed is automaticly cut in half:
    http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/2925963812
    http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/2925925074
There seems to be a problem to me, but i wanna hear an opinion of a more experienced community.
I mention that all tests are made on a wired PC.
    Thanks in advance guys.

Hi, you can try the following:
    • Upgrade the router’s firmware for better router performance.
    • Reset and then reconfigure the router’s settings
    • Check the link/card speed that the computer gets when connected from both the modem and the router
    • Adjust the router’s mtu size:

  • WRT300N and Comcast : Speed cut by 3

    Hello,
I am currently a Comcast cable internet customer. I have my modem linked to a WRT300N which is working fine... except when I look into the bandwidth speed.
When I am connected via the WRT300N (wired) I get 5 mbps download, 2mbps upload.. which is FAR off what I am supposed to get.
I then decided to skip the router and link directly the modem to my computer, and I then got an average of 31 mbps download and 3.7 upload.
There is definitely something going on there, if anyone has an idea.
Both my router and computer are in DHCP, I even cloned my PC's MAC adress just in case.
    Thanks

Try to change some settings on your Router .Login to the Router setup page, and below set change the MTU size on  your Router to 1365  and under the 'Security" tab uncheck "Block Anonymous Internet Requests"... Once all this settings are save on your router... Unplug the power from the router and modem. Wait for 30seconds and replug the power to the modem first and wait till all the lights are solid, then plug the power to the linksys router.
Now you can check whats the speed you are getting it on your Computer.
