Linksys Router WRT54G v.4 Problems

Slow sluggish connection just like everyone else. Previously I fixed this problem by adding DNS Servers: 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.1 to the list and this fixed the problem. This worked great for a few months then all of a sudden that stopped working and the DNS settings are preventing my connection. If I take the dns servers out of the list the connection works again but its slow and sluggish again. Anyone have any ideas? Linksys blames apple as usual.
Any help or ideas is greatly appreciated.

When you allow your Linksys to provide the DNS server information, are the DNS servers being provided the ones your ISP recommends?

  • Airport Extreme, Linksys Router WRT54G: Internet is Impossibly Slow

I have a problem regarding wireless internet activity on my Powerbook G4. In my house, I have a Linksys Router (WRT54G) that has worked fine for other laptops (including an iBook running Airport Extreme, a Powerbook G4 running Airport, and an iMac running Airport) for many years. When I got a refurbished Powerbook G4 1.67 GHz with Airport Extreme, I found that while Airport could be configured to recognize the wireless network (with a WEP 40/128-bit encrypted key), it barely works on the computer. The signal strength is strong (the laptop is hooked up right above the Linksys router), but the Internet barely works at all. Surfing to webpages takes 10-20-30 sec to work, and often the connection seems to drop off all together. Something is clearly wrong because despite the fact that this is my fastest computer with the fastest wireless capability, it runs at a slower pace than any computer I have ever used on the web.
I was wondering if anyone has had similar problems with getting Wireless Extreme on Powerbook G4s to work with this particular (and older) model of Linksys wireless browser (WRT54G). Some Internet sleuthing led me to believe that perhaps the router firmware needs to be updated or something like that, but I haven't really found any definitive answers. If there is anything wrong on the laptop-OS-side, I have no idea. I would appreciate any pointers that you can provide!
    Thank you to all,
    Matthew

    Hi all,
Thank you for your help. Unfortunately, my problems persist.
I was able to reset my router and to configure it again on the web-based router configuration.
As per your suggestion, I tried switching the Wireless Network Mode to "G-only." Not only did this kick off my older computers on the network (an old iMac and an older Powerbook G4, both with normal airport), but it did not fix the speed problems on the new Powerbook G4/with Airport Extreme. I am back on the mixed setting now in order to get most of the computers on the network back to their old working states...
I also tried disabling my WEP encrypted key but found that this did not speed anything up at all.
I have upgraded my firmware from its previous version, v 1.41.2 (very old!), to the latest from the Linksys website: v 4.30.5. This has not helped at all either.
Is it possible that there is any setting on the Powerbook/Airport Extreme itself that is causing these problems?
Thank you all again for your help,

  • HELP I have a wireless Linksys router WRT54G connected th...

HELP I have a wireless Linksys router WRT54G connected through my cable company broadband modem on a Mac. I have another computer to which I installed wireless capability because it didn't come with it. This required attching some piece of equipment to the back of the PC which enabled it to get on the internet without another cable modem. My question is this. If I get an iphone or a laptop(with built in wireless ability) will I automatically be able to go on the web because of the router on the Mac.

yes certainly... if you get any wireless device in network that would certainly connects to a wireless n/w of router...

  • Linksys router and IP address problem

My linksys router is sending out a fake IP address of 24.124... Is there any way to set it so it sends out something else? I'm trying to access a chat server which banned ALL 24.124 addresses because of some hacker doing a number on their server. I really want to get in without having to buy another router. I have a WRT54G V5

If the router is not giving the 192.168.1.x ip, the router might be acting as a pass through already and needs a firmware upgrade. If the firmware upgrade will not save the router, it might be defective.

Unfortunately the WRT54GS is from 2005 and there are not longer Firmware updates available for that model.
    http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/WRT54GS
On Mac's there is problem with wireless access points using a 2.4GHz/5GHz mixed mode if both parts of the wireless network have the same name (SSID) but due to technical rules two different addresses (BSSID) for the different wireless modes.
On that the Mac switches between the radio bands to provide allways "the best" connection.
That causes disassociation from the wireless what shows you then the well known effects in your wireless.
Also a band hopping "Guest Network" may disturb the connection if there is no dedicated name (SSID) is set for the Guest Network.
    On the WRT54GS
Check that the "Guest Network" is disabled.
Check that WPA2 Personal AES (not TKIP) is the security mode. See -> http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=80&vw=1&articleid=22050
Eventually change network mode from mixed (default) to "wireless-N Only" or "wireless-G Only" if the 2nd BSSID cause trouble with the Mac. -> http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=80&vw=1&articleid=22555
    On the Mac
Generally follow the instructions here -> http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=80&vw=1&articleid=15805
On System Setup - Airport (WiFi) main page uncheck (disable) "Ask to join new networks"
Eventually set up a new location for your home network.
Eventually delete all obsolete wireless networks from the "known networks" list including your WRT54GS
Delete also the corresponding key's from Kechain Acceess
    Reboot the Mac
Configure your home wireless on the Mac from scratch.
Eventually try the Linksys Forum to find more information.

  • I just got a Linksys router (WRT54GS), and when I get to step 8, it keeps asking me for a password?

I recently got a Wireless-G Broadband Router modele WRT54GS. When I get to step 8 on the setup disk, I press "Next", and it starts to check my computer's settings. It then asks for a password, so I enter "admin" like I've been told. It starts to check my computer's settings again, and then asks for the password. It keeps happening. Am I doing something wrong?
I have Windows 7. I'm getting signal, but it's not letting me connect to the internet at all (except for Google, for some reason). Oh, and it's brand new, straight out of the box. Thanks.

Perhaps you need to do the manual way of setting up the router.
For Cable connection, here's the procedure.
For DSL connection, here's the procedure.

  • Linksys Router and Screen Sharing Problems

    Hello,
I know that problems with Linksys routers and ichat video/screen sharing have been covered here and there in this forum, but I couldn't find a definitive answer.
If I can connect find on a LAN between two Macs, but then get a connection error when attempting screen sharing/video over the internet, what settings should I change on the Linksys?
    Thanks in advance.

The Linksys Firewall is normally Off by default.
There are those that try Pinging IP addresses for various reasons.
A Malformed Ping (Ping of Death) can bring down your connection.
To a certain extent this does then become a question of whether you are a big enough target or if someone discovers your IP and tries to do anything about it.
Most will be looking for access to Windows computers so your Mac it that sense will protect itself.
In about 6 years on Broadband with a Constant On Connection none of the modems I have had have reported a a Ping attack and I have had thousands of contacts with people via iChat some of which will have my IP in their Logs.
    Significant Decrease ? No

  • Linksys Router WRT54G

I reset my router today and when I go through the setup it asks for a password when it checks my computer settings I have no idea what password it wants so I try everyone I know, No dice. Is it asking for the password that came in th box or something? cause I lost the book. Can anyone help?

As you reset the router, it went to the factory default settings...and as the router's default password is admin, you have to type the password as admin in lower case...do not type anything in the username.

  • Wireless Router (WRT54G) reinstalled ,password problem

Hi. Welcome to the Cisco Home Community forums.
Also, make sure that you're resetting the router properly. You need to press and hold the reset button for about 10 seconds.
    Hope this helps.

  • Password protect Linksys router?

I have a Linksys router -WRT54G- for my iBook G4. I need to know how to configure password protection/block signal.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.3)

    Hi Weskandel,
Open Safari and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar. Press return. A small box prompting you for a username and password will appear.
The default username and password for Linksys routers is "admin" On older Linksys routers leave the username blank and type "admin" for the password.
Once inside, it's very easy to change the password for the router. Best of luck!

  • Linksys router not seen by Airport Setup Assistant

I recently started using a linksys router instead of and airport extreme, it's working, I am able to access the internet. But, my problem is I cannot see it in the Airport set up Assistant. I have not been able to setup my Airport Express because I can't see my wireless router.
    Any one have any ideas?

Bronco46, Welcome to the discussion area!
I recently started using a linksys router ... my problem is I cannot see it in the Airport set up Assistant.
The AirPort Setup Assistant and AirPort Admin Utility are ONLY for Apple's base stations and therefore won't give you access to the Linksys router.
You need to access the Linksys user's guide and follow the directions for using your browser to configure the Linksys router.
I have not been able to setup my Airport Express because I can't see my wireless router.
Configuring the AirPort Express (AX) has nothing to do with configuring the Linksys router. Configure the AX following the directions in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.
