Linksys vs. powerbook

I just set up a linksys wrt54G router to my earthlink dsl modem. After some wrangling with the linksys people, I got my eMac to work through the ethernet wired connection to the router. However, I can't get my Powerbook (1.5 GHz PowerPC G4) to work on the wireless network just created. The weird thing is, I can log in to my wireless network, and my airport shows that it is getting excellent signal strength. I can also connect to the router or ping it (following someone else's instructions because I wouldn't otherwise know how to do it). It's just when I open a browser, the pages won't load. So I'm getting signal strength, and on the network, but it's like I don't have permission or something to actually use it.
Any thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

When you say web pages won't load, does the status bar report something along the lines of "www.apple.com not found"? Try entering http://17.112.152.32 into your browser's URL field and pressing return. If that loads the apple.com website, you've identified the problem as being with the DNS (domain name system) setup with the WiFi connection. Check the DNS server info in the appropriate box in the System Preferences -> Network TCP/IP tab settings for Built-in Ethernet on your eMac against the equivalent settings under Airport on the Powerbook and make sure the DNS server entires are the same.
If the computers have the same DNS server settings, check that the router has the same DNS setting under both WiFi and Ethernet connection options. I thought those were by default the same, but it should be straightforward to check by tyoing the router's IP number into your browser's URL bar. If you don't already have the router's IP number at hand, try http://192.168.1.1 and/or http://192.168.1.254 (you can also check the Linksys manual and/or the website).
Note that after changing the router settings you'll likely need to restart the computers for the changes to be picked up.

  • Powerbook won't print to LaserWriter 16/600 via Airport w/linksys

Powerbook is running Tiger, AppleTalk is turned on and cannot print over Airport network using regular base station. LaserWriter is plugged into Linksys router that also has Base Station connected to it.
When I log into the Admin utility is shows the printer tab for a split second then it disappears..does that have anything to do with it?

I don't knwo which one is set for what or which is
doign the DHCP. anything connected to the linksys is
    pulling a 192.168 IP, the laptop a 10.1 IP.
Here's at least one reason why you can't print. Both devices have to be on the same network unless you want to have problems with them communicating. One is on a Class C 192.168.something.x net, and one is on a Class A 10.x.x,x net. Put both on the same net. Simple ways to do this:
1 turn off DHCP on the Linksys. If you have the Airport hooked to the Linksys using the Linksys' WAN port, then everything on the Linksys should be part of the Airport's Class A net. The Linksys is now an expensive switch.
2 sell the Linksys and replace it with a real, cheap, switch.
3 turn off the DHCP on the Airport. If you set things correctly with the Linksys and the Airport software, and you have the Airport connected to one of the Linksys' LAN ports, then the Airport is now a wireless access point. Everything will be on the Linksys' Class C net.
4 sell the Airport and replace it with a dedicated wireless access point.
5 sell both the Airport and the Linksys and replace them both with a single device which combines a router, a wireless access point, and a four-port LAN switch in one. Linksys, Belkin, and Netgear, to name but three vendors, make such units.
    I have
the linksys router for my G4 tower and laserwriter. I
have the airport router to create a wireless network
    for my laptop.
what should I do? please be specific. thanks
You've got two nets. You need to have only one. Once you have only one, if you still have problems we can fix those fairly easily.

  • Powerbook loses linksys router connection

I have a Powerbook G4 and am using a Linksys wireless router to connect to the internet (along with my roomates windows laptop.) It usually works very well, but when I put my computer to sleep it frequently can't find the router when I turn it back on. The only way to reconnect is to resart the router itself.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

I would contact Linksys, or post your question to either the Powerbook or OS X networking discussions, as it really itsn't related to "Windows Compatibility."

  • PowerBook G4 17" 1.5GHz & Linksys WCG200 Gateway

    Summary
My Mac won't get the full downstream bandwidth (9 Mbits) with either wireless or wired ethernet, but my roommate's Windows computer gets the full amount (and then some) with his wired ethernet connection. My ISP and Linksys both report that everything is working fine. What's going on with my Mac?
    Full Description
I recently got a Linksys WCG200 v.2 Gateway (cable modem/router in one device) and set it up with my ISP (Cox Communications). Our service is supposed to be 9 megabits downstream, and 1 megabit upstream. I connected to the router via wireless and wired, and have been to four different speed test sites only to discover that my downstream speed is never faster than 3.5 megabits. The upstream is still getting up to as fast as 1.3 megabits.
I called Cox to ask them if perhaps they had not provisioned the proper amount for our account, and he verified that he had in fact dedicated 10 megabits to our account and that it was in fact being delivered to the modem at 10 megabits downstream and 1 megabit upstream.
Next, I called Linksys to ask if there was something wrong with the WCG200 gateway and they suggested the standard reboot and reset options which didn't do anything to solve the problem. They suggested that the device may be defective and I should return it to the store where I purchased it. Before I did that, though, I tried two more things.
My roommate has a Dell with WinXP on it, so he fired it up and tested the speed at a few different speed sites to notice that he was receiving between 9 and 12 megabits downstream and 1 megabits upstream. He was hard wired to the gateway, so I tried it again on my PowerBook, but still I was getting no faster than 3.5 megabits downstream.
I tried calling Apple, but they just said that it was probably the gateway or Cox, but I know that's not true because if either of those weren't working/configured properly, then my roommates Dell wouldn't have been able to get the full (and then some) downstream speed. The agent simply had me remove my SystemConfiguration folder and then reinstall Tiger, which neither did anything to fix the problem. What a waste of the AppleCare Protection Plan!
I'm pretty convinced that my last test has narrowed down the possible cause of the problem. I inserted my Cisco 350 Aironet PCMCIA wireless card to test to see if there might be a problem with either my AirPort Extreme card or the ethernet controller on the PowerBook, and to my surprise, I was able to get 5.5 megabits downstream consistently. The Cisco card is 802.11b.
I ran one other test by jumping on my neighbor's wireless network which is rated at 4 megabits downstream, and I was able to get the full 4 megabits downstream with my AirPort Extreme card as well as with my Cisco card.
Due to the improved functionality of the Cisco card and the fact that my roommate's Windows computer was able to get the full amount, I'm pretty convinced that there must be a problem with the way my Mac is communicating with this particular Linksys gateway device which is causing it to not receive the full downstream amount. However, I have no clue where to go from here as far as more troubleshooting techniques or possible fixes for this problem.

I don't know the answer but am curious--do you need to make the upgrade because your 1.5G board is dead, or because you'd like a little more speed?
If the latter, I think you'd be disappointed. In doing a number of upgrades on desktop machines, I've found that, although calculated benchmarks may look better with any upgrade, you need a 20-30% boost in processor speed for the increase to be noticeable in normal use. When I upgraded an old G3 from 300 to 500 mhz --a 40 percent increase--that benefit was crystal-clear. When I compare my 1.0G PowerBook G4 to my 1.25G PowerMac G4 tower (same OS, bus speed, RAM, and VRAM), I see little if any difference in day-to-day computer use from the 25 percent advantage in speed in the desktop model
If the need is for speed, you could end up with a costly upgrade that doesn't "feel" any faster.
As to you real question, it might be better to contact a company selling PowerBook parts to see if they can shed light on the logic board interchangeability. I've bought parts from this firm:
    http://www.powerbookguy.com/xcart/catalog/index.html
and found him to be an excellent vendor. Call and ask--the toll-free number is on the main page.

  • Powerbook and Linksys print server

    Hello All,
I have a question which I believe I know what he answer is. I have a new Powerbook. right now, I am using a Linksys Print Server connected to a Epson inkjet printer. This is networked in my home windows environment. When you add a new pc etc, the Epson drivers are installed first than the Print server drivers. However, it seems there are no Mac driver etc for the Print server per Linksys. So basically, am I stuck with adding a dedicated printer to the powerbook or taking the print server out of the equasion here and letting one of my windows pc be the print server. No an option that I really wanted.
    Thanks,
    AlRoz

    Al,
Before you do all that, try some of the options Tiger gives you. In the Applications folder there is a Utilities Folder. In there there is a Printer Setup Utility. Open it, and click Add. At the top there is a Default Browser and IP Printer. Click IP Printer. In this window you should be able to set up the connections so your powerbook can talk to your printer thru the ethernet printer server.
    Hope this helps

  • Linksys Wireless to Powerbook internet issues!

Heres the setup: Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless B router with a Windows XP desktop as the only pc hooked up to it. I use my powerbook wirelessly. Every time the Windows PC is rebooted, the wireless internet connection to my PB is gone... Until I restart the router. But it's pretty annoying to have to go down two flights of stairs just so I can use the internet on my powerbook upstairs.
    What can I do?

Ensure that your internet connection is connected to the Linksys' WAN port and the PC connected to a LAN port.

  • Powerbook has range problem with Linksys Router. Don't Understand!

Well, I have a Linksys Wireless Router WRT54G v4 with a secure network. I get my Mac and PC to connect with no problem when they are in the same room as the router. When I go to another room, the PC stays connected but the Mac looses connection. I never had this problem before. If you're wondering I'm using a 17" Powerbook with OSX 10.4.8
I only have these two laptops using the router. I had v1 of the router and it went out on me and Linksys sent me v4. Well with the v1, I was able to get connection anywhere in the house with both laptops. Now, even when I'm right next to the router in the same room, the Mac is not getting a full bar, only 3/4. And when I leave the room, I get 0 on teh bar. It just doesn't make sense.
If you have any ideas, please let me know because I've done everything to get it to work. From reseting the router completely, to setting up a secure network, to trying different channels on the router.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Do you have the lastest V4 firmware, which is available from Linksys's web site. They also have a support forum where people list firmware issues.
Have you considered any of the third party firmwares available? The WRT54G has publicly available firmware that others have modified to give more flexibility, some which include the ability to increase the signal output. There's a listing under third part firmware at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G#Third-partyfirmwareprojects .
Have you tried any of the Linksys suggestions for router placement to maximize the signal? Apparently the V4 box introduced something...so this may be worth a try, too.
You've probably looked over the Linksys support web site already (even though the support staff can't spell mac), perhaps you've also done a Google query, something like 'wrt54g v4 problems'.

Try putting $ (a dollar sign) in front of the password.

  • Where Did Linksys come from on my PowerBook 15" Aluminum

I'm using my Airport (old white one) as a router for my Powerbook and G3.
Usually, once a day I lose my connection between the Airport and the Powerbook. I shut down everything and restart and a window pops up and says "none of your trusted wireless networks can be found. would you like to join Linksys"? If I do nothing the Airport signal shows a weak signal but not able to connect to internet and when I go to Airport to turn it off it shows Linksys as the system I'm connected to. Huh? If I click it again, Linksys vanishes from list.
Oh I know, this makes no sense even to me, but sure need some guidance. Incidently, G3 will connect during this frustrating period.

Thank you for the info. This all has me frustrated similar to the way I feel when I have to use windows:)
I've finally determined that when I put powerbook to sleep it loses connection. Is this the norm? Generally I can reconnect by going to airport in menu bar and clicking on my network. But first thing this a.m. that did not work and Linksys appeared as a choice.
Oh well. Would a Linksys router work with my Airport Exteme card? Do I understand correctly that if I buy a "wired" router it will work with old BW G3 wired and Powerbook wirelessly?

  • PowerBook G4 AirPort connected to Linksys Wireless G

I've started having problems with my PowerBook dropping or not connecting to my primary wireless network. If I put it to sleep or shut it down, it occasionally will come back up connected to my neighbors unsecure network. It doesn't always come back to my network as a default. I run my network in a closed configuration, 128Bit HEX security. In order to get back up, I have to go in on Internet Connect, type in my network name and use the 26 caracter HEX code. Real pain in the butt!
Anyone have any ideas what is going on or how to make Internet Connect save my network as the default?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Skycoach
    powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Skycoach,
Can you not just select the network from the AirPort menu (icon) ?
And when it prompts you for the password, check the box that stores it in your Keychain.
I bet you have chosen to have a closed network (router does not broadcast it's SSID). Such is the price you pay for using a feature that provides no more security than your 128-bit password.
Once you have that sorted, we can look at configuring the Network system pref to automatically join your network.

  • G4 powerbook and G3 desktop with linksys help

In either case, laptop, or g3, I can type in the linsys router address and get to config page, but on either - I cannot access the internet. On my laptop, wirelessly - I have tried the WPA password avenue and all kinds of different scenarios, then I realized it was not just wireless, but also the desktop that has ethernet cable to linksys...
I just don't get it...?? What am I missing?

    Hi dratatat:
What type of connection are you using? Cable or DSL? If it's a cable, DHCP configuration will work in the router, if you have a DSL, you probably have to set it up to use PPPoE.
    I hope this helps!

  • Connecting my 550 Powerbook with Linksys 354G Gateway Kit

    Hello and help!
I've just set up my iMac with the Linksys modem router and ethernet connection and all works OK.
I now want to use the Linksys WPC54G V.5 PMCIA card that came with kit with my 2nd computer, a 550 PB..
I plugged the card into the PB and I get the card icon but I can't wirelessly connect. I've opened System Preferences/Network to try to select airport but the tab is not there. Being a 550 PB, it's never had an Airport Card.
How do I open/configure my airport?
I haven't connected the PB via ethernet through the router. Do I need to do this before trying wireless? I thought the card in the PB would pick up the wireless signal from the modem router connected to the iMac but nothing happens.
I'm obviously doing something wrong but I can't work it out!
Can anyone help set me up (as it were..)?
    Thanks, Russ

    Russ,
The Linksys site says that the WPC54G does not support Mac. I'm not sure of the chipset in that card, but I have a Belkin card with the Broadcom chipset that OS X recognizes as an Airport card.
Have you tried System Preferences/Network/Show Network Port Configurations to make sure the Airport is on? If the card is not recognized by the PB, Airport may not be an option.
Sometimes a second party driver will work with non-Apple cards. I checked the IOXpert site and it says that their driver will not work with the WPC54G.
    http://www.ioxperts.com/devices/devices_80211b.html.
I tried this driver with a PC only D-link card with no success, but maybe it will work with the Linksys:

  • Wireless Printing from my Powerbook G4 to a Linksys Printserver.

I have a small home network using an ATT DSL modem-router. I have several PCs hardwired to the router and 1 older MAC wireless. I have a MAC G4 laptop and a Dell laptop (my wife's) also connected wirelessly and all work well. I have added a Linksys wireless print server today and am able to get my wife's laptop to print easily and reliable as does the hardwired Dell. What I need is to get my MAC laptop to print wirelessly as well. I have tried all the options in the printer set-up but it does not see the print server. Linksys does not support MAC and there are no MAC drivers for the print server to download that I know of. Does anyone know of a fix on how I could configure this equipment so I can print wirelessly from my MAC laptop. I would appreciate it.

  • Powerbook g4 cannot access linksys access point

I have an unencrypted access point that I cannot hit with the powerbook. I can easily connect with my pc notebook. The access point is transmitting on channel 6 rather than on the default of 11.

I am a pc user trying to help my mom. Last time I did this I believe that I changed the channel of my access point. I also had an encrypted access point that her gbook tends to prefer.

  • Powerbook G4 can't connect via ethernet but connects via airport

We have a small office network connected to an Efficient Networks DSL router that's managed by our isp. The router has 4 ports and a linksys 8 port switch is connected to one of those ports. Another D-Link wireless router/switch is connected to another port.
2 i-macs connect without problem via ethernet cable. They are set to DHCP and get 192.xx private addresses. Both run 10.4.5. Another older imac running 9.2.2. also has no problems.
I recently purchased a powerbook G4 and it will not connect via ethernet to the Efficient networks router. At first it was connected to the linksys, so decided to connect it direct to the Efficient Networks router. With DHCP, it acquires a 169. internet address which is self generated (i.e. no real connection). I tried to give it a static private address (talking to the isp provider). They could see the powerbook but saw all zero's (presumable mac address). By the way the Powerbook works perfectly at home connected via ethernet cable to a D-Link router connected to a cable modem so it's not a physical problem. I even checked the ethernet cable I used in the office with another computer - no problem.
When I switch to airport in the office, the powerbook connects to the network and the internet. I get some strange warning messages showing the server's and the router's private ip addresses. I click ok, and the powerbook finds an unassigned private ip address. It's the only way it will work, but it causes problems, because I can't connect to one of the network printers. Speed also isn't great.
Can anyone give me advise how to proceed. I am no expert on this stuff so keep it as simple as possible.
    Tks

    Tim,
Thanks for your help. Here's what I've done before reading your e-mail. The D-Link DI-524 wireless router is connected to the Effiicent Neworks DSL router as you mentioned. One ethernet port of the EFF.Net. router is connected to the WAN port of the DI-514.
Because I have a D-Link router at home which works flawlessly with my powerbook, I decided to connect the ethernet cable of the powerbook to the D-Link which has 4 ethernet ports. Lo and behold, the powerbook acquired a private ip address and connected to the LAN and internet!
When I connected the powerbook direct to the Efficient Networks router, it could not communicate. I believe that there must be some software incompatibility between the powerbook and the Efficient Networks router. By connecting to the D-Link, the D-Link assigned an ip address to the powerbook, and it could connect to the server, lan, etc..
Only problem is that I have a Brother network printer that cannot connect to the powerbook. My powerbook cannot find it on the network. Because there is a linksys switch connected to the efficient networks router's third ethernet port, maybe as you said, going through the D-Link via DHCP (when the Linksys is also acting as a DHCP server, might cause this type of problem. What do you think?
As a final note, other imac G5's connected to the linksys switch (which then connects to the Efficient Network's router) have no problem connecting to the lan or internet and have no problem connecting to any of the printers. When I put the powerbook on that switch, I could not connect to the internet - i.e. whether connecting via the lynksys switch or direct with the efficient networks router - same results: no internet connection whether manually or via DHCP.
So the imac G5 has no problem with the efficient networks router but the powerbook G4 hits a brick wall. The G4 likes the D-Link router. I am concerned (and I will have to check this) that if I turn off the dhcp server feature from the D-Link, that whatever software issue crops up between the powerbook and the Efficient Networks router, will rise up again, because the D-Link will act like a simple switch (just like my linksys switch), and we'll be back to square zero. In any case, no harm in trying. This may be the cause of the Powerbook not seeing that Brother printer (even though it sees another printer and other macs).
Having spent hours reading about network problems, I think it's safe to say that macs have problems with certain routers. Why a G5 works and a powerbook G4 doesn't is beyond me, but clearly software must play a role.
