Linksys WRT54G - Dlink DI-624 Won't Work

For awhile now I've been unable to get any Video chats to work with my parents. Tried all the various suggestions, nothing seemed to work. Finally, I thought to break out my Airport Express and see if that would work, and it did! Further testing eventually revealed that it has to be my router, but even that is kinda in question.
Some details:
Parents have Roadrunner in IN, using a Motorola SB4100, connected to WRT54G going over the wire, not wireless.
I've got Roadrunner in NC, using Motorola SB4100, connected to a D-Link 624.
Now me talking to them, no router on my side, I can vid chat. Me connected to my D-link, wire or wireless: No go. Set my computer to be in DMZ. Still doesn't work. Set their computer in DMZ plus mine. No go.
Switched to Airport Express router, and it worked fine. Plugged Airport Express into Dlink, Dlink to cable modem, and THAT worked. That surprised me big time, but looks like the default configuration I'm using on the AE is keeping all that traffic seperate, and the Dlink is just routing the packets to cable modem without doing any filtering.
I 'borrowed' a Netgear router using wireless in a neighboring apartment, but I that didn't work. 'Borrowed' a WRT54G and had no problem talking to my parents via that. (People so need to learn to secure their routers)
Tried to talk to my parents through the Dlink to their computer with no Linksys, but couldn't do it because of the way we have that physically setup.
Very frustrating as I much prefer the Dlink and how it works, what information it provides, and some of its options. But if I can't make it work with the more prevalent Linksys, especially my parents, then seems like I have to bail on it and get me a Linksys too.
Anybody have any success with the DI-624 talking to Linksys?

Doug,
Desperate to make iChat work after several weeks of trying everything else, and a hint that it may be a router problem, I tried communicating with my Dl-624 router out of the "chain'', I.E. with my Mac connected directly to the ADSL modem.
This worked (My setup uses a ADSL modem and a wireless router). 'Defcom' from this discussion group informed me that he was using a NetGear without any problems, so I elected to try that brand and it has worked flawlessly.
I bought a NetGear WGR614v6 and after two tweaks my internet and iChat work perfectly.
Like you, I really liked the DI-624, how it worked, the information it provided, and some of its options but just could not get it to work.
If you would like to contact me click on 'edharson', the info is in my profile.

  • Linksys WRT54G router--Why doesn't it work with my Macbook?

I have a perfectly functional Apple MacBook (Unibody, late 2008) running Leopard 10.5.6. I have used it to connect to public Wi-Fi but it is unable to connect to my home Linksys WRT54G router. I called Apple Tech Support, and they suggested that I change the wireless channel and/or temporarily remove the WPA encryption. I did both, the computer still could not connect. In System Preferences on the MacBook, it tells me that "AirPort does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the internet." The tech support guy tried to help, but in the end basically told me that the router just plain might not be compatible with Apple products. (My iPod Touch cannot connect either.)
I can buy a new router, but this one works perfectly for the rest of the computers in the house (PCs) and they're expensive--and there's no guarantee that those will work either.
So: Does anyone know any solutions short of buying a new router that would make my Linksys compatible with my Macbook AND our home PCs? Or, failing that, a good, WPA-encrypted router that WILL work with both?
I have a Snow Leopard disk (I just received the computer on Thursday). Would upgrading to Snow Leopard be of any help? I'm planning on doing it anyway one of these days.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Sola Gratia

You are in the wrong forum but I'll try and help anyway. That model of Linksys router has a long history of not getting along with Apple products. That is not to say it will never work, but it does require that you download and install the latest firmware for the exact model of router that you have. There are multiple sub-models of that router so make sure that you get the right one.
Once you have done the firmware update, restart your router and try it again. WPA-psk should work but for troubleshooting purposes, turn off encryption and see if you can get your MacBook and touch working. You might want to use WPA2-psk instead of WPA.
I would hold off on Snow Leopard until you get WiFi working. Nothing like changing to too many things at one time to really mess things up.

  • Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router won't save settings

Hi everyone. I got a stupid little case that's really pissing me off, I'm just trying to port foward with this router, and after I'm done entering all my settings, I click save settings, it tells me settings are succesful.
But the it goes back to the port forwarding page and all the stuff is at default again as if I did'nt make any changes. What the hell is this?
please can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong , I'm sure it's just a little something I don't know about that's making it not save any changes to port fowarding.

Use a wired computer, open the command prompt ping your router just to make sure that the router is responding. If the same happens do a hard reset on the router for 10 seconds.

  • Linksys WRT54GS Problem

I have a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router that has stopped working. All it will do is all 4 of the Ethernet port lights on the front light up solid green along with the Internet light. Is there any hope of fixing this?
It wouldn't make that much of a difference, but I already purchased a new LInksys Cisco EA3500, but I cannot get it to do my port forwarding. I have tried everything and nothing works. Have spent hours on the phone with tech support with no solution. My old WRT54GS just simply worked. The port forwarding worked perfect. I have tried the exact same setup in the new EA3500 and no luck no matter what I try.
So, is there anything I can do to get the old WRT54GS working?

    Hi darkcyber.
What happened to the router by the way? Have you checked the power cord if it is the correct one? I already checked on their website and the PSU for this model is 12V 0.5A. You can try to reset also the device for 30 seconds and unplug it after for 30 seconds also and if it is the same thing then perhaps you can try another power outlet to see if leds will lit up properly.

  • WRT54G v4 won't work in PPPoE mode...

    WRT54G v4 won't work in PPPoE mode...
For the past few years, I've had my WRT54G v4 set up to run in PPPoE mode. My Siemens Speedstream 5200 is set to run in Bridge Mode. It's worked fine for a long time. If I ever ran into a problem, I could always simply reset both, re-do all the settings, and it'd be fine.
Today I come home from work, it's not working at all. I reset the settings, redo everything, still not working. I do this a few times. It repeatedly just won't connect to anything. The DSL modem activity lights are flashing, everything is normal, the Status page in my Linksys setup all reads fine (it's connecting through the modem like it should, acquiring an IP address, etc). So, I decide I'm gonna reset the modem and try bypassing the Linksys.
That turns out to work just fine.
So I reset the Linksys, hook my PC back up to the Linksys, and everything is fine. But here's the rub...
If I try to bridge the modem and put the Linksys in PPPoE mode, it simply stops working. If I put it back into DHCP mode and reset the DSL modem, it still won't work. Once it enters PPPoE mode, the Linksys simply stops working as it should. Nothing besides a reset will make it start working.
Any suggestions/explanations as to what would cause this? I'm completely baffled, personally. I'm running the DSL modem in it's normal state and the Linksys in DHCP but I really prefer it the other way. I just can't figure out why it isn't working.
    So, to sum up:
    1.  Connection is fine when going straight through the DSL modem.
    2.  Connection is fine when routed through the Linksys into the DSL modem with the Linksys in DHCP mode.
    3.  Once DSL modem is set to Bridge Mode and Linksys to PPPoE, I lose internet connectivity.  No DNS, nothing.
    4.  Even if I change the settings back to DHCP, it still will not work.  I must manually reset the router's settings using the reset button, doing the same with the DSL modem.
Any suggestions?  I've tried everything I can possibly think of.

You need to Upgrade the Router's firmware in order to get the connection work again with PPPoE...
Download 2.95 MB...Once the Firmware has been downloaded you need to unzip the firmware file, it will unzip 3 files, you need the .bin file...
Open an Internet Explorer browser page.In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave the username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • Linksys WTRG54 won't work with Motorola Surfboard

I just bought this Linksys WRT54G, and it won't connect to my Motorola Surfboard modem. I can connect to the router wirelessly from my Macbook, I just can't get online. I'm sure it's the router's problem because I can't even log in to the modem when I'm connected to the router. I checked all my connections repeatedly, tried updating the firmware, and many many power cycles. Also did a lot of googling and tried other solutions. Are they just not compatible with each other?
One thing is though, the very first time I hooked it up, it was working. Then I power cycled it and it won't work now.

Have you configured the Linksys to clone the MAC address on record with your ISP? Sometimes this is required by the ISP. I use Comcast, a Moto 6120, and a D-Link router, and had to do this.
If this is not relevant, perhaps you can provide the hardware version of your Linksys WRT54G, model of Moto Surfboard, and your ISP and general geographic location, in hopes someone can help.

I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad, will that work? And one more thing about the setup, the linksys router shich acts as a base is in a different room as the airport express which i wanted to use for airplay. So I'm hoping to hook up the Airport express via wireless signal. If i can set it up, can someone pls help me out by posting detailed instructions. Thanks so much!

The first message that AirPort Utility will display during the auto setup will be that the Express will be confgured to "extend" the network. When AirPort Utility analyzes the network further, and sees that the Express cannot "extend" the 3rd party network, the next message will indicate that the Express is being configured to "join" the wireless network.
Once the Express is configured, if you later go into AirPort Utility to check the settings under the Wireless tab, you will see that the Wireless Mode is indeed "Join a wireless network".

  • Can't use my HP Deskjet F4580 Wireless Printer with the AirPort Extreme Base. The printer is NOT connected at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, and is placed in another room. It worked just fine with my previous router (Linksys WRT54G). Help me!

    Hey Guys!
I just got my AirPort Extreme Base, but I can't use my HP Deskjet F4580 wireless printer with it.
The printer is not connected to the AirPort Extreme's USB port. It is placed in another room, and I'd like to use it (the printer) wirelessly (not connected to the USB port os the AirPort Extreme), as I used to. There is no place for the printer close the AirPort Extreme. It worked just fine with my previous wireless router (Linksys WRT54G). I'm very disappointed with the AirPort Extreme Base Station because of that!...
    Can you help me? Please?!
    Thanks Folks!

This must be a tough one, no suggestions at all.

  • How do I configure my Airport to work well with a Linksys WRT54G?

I have DSL Extreme coming into my house in bridge mode. (Don't know the specifics, but they said that's how it has to work.) I had my Airport Extreme connected to the modem, sending out a nice wireless signal.
I was given a Linksys WRT54G Ver. 6 wireless router, and I thought I'd use it as the main router connected the modem. I also want to use it as a wireless access point for one half the house for b/g devices AND I also want to set up the Airport Extreme as another wired access point for the other half of the house for n devices.
So, I set up the Linksys as the main router sending out a wireless signal on channel 1 for b/g devices. I connected the WAN port of the Airport to one of the open LAN ports on the Linksys, changed the Airport to Bridge mode, and set up a new wirelss network to broadcast on a different channel. Unfortunately, this isn't working. Only the Linksys wireless is working properly, i.e. connected to the internet. The Airport broadcasts the wireless signal, but it isn't connecting to the internet.
I've tried changing the IP address of the Airport to one that falls within the range of the Linksys (192.168.1.x) and making sure that the subnet of the Airport is identical to the Linksys. I've also added the DNS servers, although I'm not sure why the Airport Admin Utility asked for this. Regardless, nothing works. I'll get a green light, but there's no connectivity to the internet.
I've also tried connecting to a LAN port and not the WAN port on the Airport. No joy there.
I've read through numerous threads, and they all seem to indicate that my original set up should work. I've upgraded my Linksys firmware, to no avail. I don't want the Airport to be a repeater as there is a reduction in speed. I want to have two separate wireless access points.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Ok, I got you. Prior to the introduction of the simultaneous dual-band routers, the only way to mimic them was exactly what you are trying to do. Connect two routers by Ethernet and create separate wireless networks to allow clients to connect to either as appropriate.
You are also correct that the upstream router (Linksys) should have both NAT & DHCP enabled and that the downstream router (AirPort) be configured as a bridge. The only recommendation is to set the AirPort's static Private IP address to one just outside of the Linksys' DHCP server range instead of inside it to prevent the same IP address being handed out to multiple clients.
You could do this a number of ways, but the simplest would be to use the Configure IPv4 = Manually option on the TCP/IP tab within the AirPort Utility. Use the LAN-side IP address of the Linksys for the Router Address, and the appropriate DNS server addresses (either your ISP's or a service like OpenDNS). The Domain Name field can be left blank.
Since the AirPort is in bridge mode, it really doesn't matter which Ethernet port (WAN or LAN) you connect the Linksys to, but for consistency, I would recommend the WAN (circle-of-dots) port.

  • Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router Not working

I have a Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router and it has worked good for a couple months and yesterday it stopped. When I plug it in all the lights are lit even though there arent any ethernet cables connected and the power light blinks constantly. I tried holding the reset button on the back and it didnt help. Anyone know whats wrong or anything I can try to fix it?

You need to try again to reset the router to factory defaults.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware. After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

does anybody know why ichat wont work behind linkswireless router (WRT54GS) i tried opening the port 5190 and still doesnt work on G5 running tiger. Pls help????

    Hi Joel,
Many LinkSys set uppages look the same.
This one is for the WRT54g (no S at the end)
    http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Linksys/WRT54G/iChat.htm
In the Adminstration option you should find UPnP which is an On or Off setting.
    Try that.
Also check that the modem and the Linksys are not both doing DHCP as this creates subnets which ichat also doe not like

  • Airport Extreme and Linksys WRT54G v8 set up in WDS mode not working

Hi, I am trying to set up my Linksys WRT54g v8 router with DD-WRT v8.0.0.6 firmware as a WDS remote to my Airport Extreme Base Station set up as the WDS main, with WPA2 personal encryption, and it appears that they are talking to one another, but when I plug in a mac with ethernet to the Linksys, I can hit the linksys router to program it but it won't go out to the internet and gets a self-assigned IP.

    Welcome to the discussions!
Duane posted a list of known WDS compatible devices about 6 weeks ago and the Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS were shown as compatible, but not v5. Your post indicates that you have v8, so this may not be possible.

  • IPhone use to connect to a Linksys WRT54G v5. router but now it won't go to Internet. Updated firmware of Router.

Hello. We have 3 iPhones at my work and for a long time we could connect through WIFI with a wireless Linksys router. Now it won't get us to the Internet. I have updated the router's firmware. The iPhones can see the connection but the Internet won't work. I have played with some of the settings in the router but I don't think I know enough. Please help.

If you think it might need a charge, then use the Wall Charger to charge it up a bit.
Reset, hold at same time Home and Power buttons for about 15 seconds until iPhone restarts itself. See if everything is OK.
If not, you can try to Restore. If the iPhone is OFF, then hold the Home button as you connect the iPhone to computer with iTunes open. Keep holding Home button until iTunes detects iPhone in Recovery Mode. Restore Firmware.
If the iPhone is ON, then connect iPhone to computer with iTunes open, and hold both Home and Power buttons until iTunes detects iPhone in Recovery Mode. Restore Firmware.

  • WEP not working in Vista Home Premium with Linksys WRT54GS version 5

Bought a new computer with Vista and installed the router. Made it so WEP is enabled. When I try to connect with a laptop or my other computer in my home, it will not take the WEP key and says it can't connect. I've reinstalled and redid the network, still won't work. It works if I don't enable WEP, but I need security. Is this problem fixable or do I need to buy a different router? My second computer has the Wireless PCI adapter WMP54G. This adapter worked perfectly in my last computer. Any help?

Make sure your router has the latest firmware and try using WPA security.  WEP is not that secure any more but something is better then nothing at all.  Make sure your laptop has all the Windiws Updates and the firewall is off.
